Don't be sad about the joke that is CIV6 and CIV7, game developers these days don't even know anymore what made their franchise great or care about pleasing their loyal community. Just look at CIV7, instead they copy boring mechanics from a FAILED competitor. Tells you enough about their priorities. Luckily we have CIV5. For the best CIV experience ever play CIV5 + Vox Populi mod which makes improvements on core mechanics of the game, adds new and old mechanics while adding layers of complexity and massively overhauls AI making it the only 4x game with an actually competitive AI. Challenge and countless hours of fun await you. Greetings

Still the best CIV in my opinion. I played a ton of 6 but I started getting tired of the micro-managing that is absolutely required by it. I went back to 5 and it was like a breath of fresh air! Where 5 feels like a fun board game, 6 feels like managing a spreadsheet.

I remember when I got this game and all it's dlc for 12 bucks during a seasonal sale the better part of a decade ago. I don't know what's going on over with T2I but to see this game at full price with only 10% off the DLC right now in the midst of a sale is... disheartening. If you want an honest review it's great, my favorite in the franchise and the benchmark that I compare others to (Even though I played Rev and 4 first). The large armies and hexagonal map give the game a favorable appearance, though the maps have only gotten prettier in the franchise I do think civ 5 had the coolest units by scaling their count. A whole battalion of riflemen unleashing a devastating barrage never gets old. The game flows naturally, and though diplomacy is more shallow than you'd expect the game has the depth you would want from a civ 4x with a variety in possible victorys. Leader personalities are all splendid, fun characters that add life to any civ and how their personalities contribute to gameplay is clearly present (I will never forget the great betrayal of Casimir III). It's also older than most highschool freshmen, so to see the entire game and all it's (unfortunately) crucial dlc still cost 90 dollars combined in the middle of a seasonal sale... Maybe it went on sale when 7 came out, but I can't imagine that meriting not taking part in the seasonal. Take it from someone who loves this game to death; don't spend 90 dollars on this, buy it somewhere else or don't buy it.

Overall nice game, played it for years. Now i cannot. Thank you for destroying it on my laptop HP G3 . Not working on DX9, 10, and 11. HP Elite Book 840 G3 Intel HD Graphics 520 I know it is quite old but still not cool.

Upon first playing this game, I was very new to the turn-based strategy genre and I can assure you I was very confused. I purchased the game with all DLC for $50 on sale because I did not want to have to go through the expensive process of DLC acquisition if I liked the game so I took the risk--and it definitely paid off. Civilization V, especially with DLC is a complex game with many levels of gameplay. You have to manage cities, production, happiness, your military, diplomacy, and so many other aspects. If you're going in blind it can be very difficult to understand at first, and many concepts will seem vague. But overtime, I slowly learned the various components such as production, tourism, culture, science, trade, wonders, and many more. So, I can assure you, you will likely enjoy this game, but you have to be patient and invest time into understanding the crucial mechanics and how they affect your gameplay. Overall, a great game.

A great game, it's only flaw is the unfunctional multiplayer that was never fixed. A great game for solo playing. I highly recommed the dlc's.

I feel a deep repulsion to playing a grand strategy game built for toddlers that discourages expanding your empire.

Was getting sick of Civ VI and its problems, and was waiting on Civ VII to be released, but then was turned off by the reviews of that game. I thought "why not try Civ V?" with years of mods to polish it up, it could be good. It turns out that there are some things I miss from Civ VI, but there are far more things I am glad are gone. I genuinely enjoy Civ V a lot more. The only caveat is you have to manually install the Vox Populi mod.

Best Civ, 4 is good too but holds a special place in my heart for a different time. Would play 6 but it keeps crashing. Heard VII is bad.

I love the realistic diversity. However: when i play at the prince level, the population is excessively unhappy all the time. Observe how well I was able to do in the second game at the warlord level. I am poised to win a cultural victory of prodigious proportion. I can also win every other way possible (diplomatic, world leader, science & so forth). We have night & day betwixt the two. Could there be less extreme variance from one level to the next? Other than that, this is the most well thought out game ever, & the only one I currently play,

It's good. It was cheaper than Civ4 for some reason. IDK why, I haven't played Civ4 yet. It's an old game, so it has memory usage limits. It'll get a little clunky with too much stuff going on, even on high end hardware. Each game can take 8+ hours, so be prepared to play the cards you're dealt or spend 2 hours setting up the map *just right* before the game even starts. The most important mod IMO is "Really Advanced Setup" I haven't played any online multiplayer yet so I can't comment on that. 8.5/10

An turn-based strategy game that everyone should check out. You will need the Gods and Kings, and Brave New World DLCs to fully enjoy this game. tho. It is typical for modern civ games to require DLC to truly be good.

Civ V is the most playable version. Civ 6 is too complex for a relaxed game, and Civ 7 is a dumpster fire.

only 16 hours in, but only 2 games played, not even 1 game won. The first game i started, i went straight to 3 hours of gameplay without even noticing time fly. Just one more turn to save and leave the game. Nope. 6 turns after and maybe i'll remember wanting to leave the game. It just grabs your attention and makes you think about what to do but in an enjoyable way. I'm not the biggest CIV fan but i can say without a doubt that it's a great game and a game i'll always play.

This was my first Civilization game and a great segway into the franchise. I love how many little things you can control and all the different ways to play. There are so many different ways to win and things to find and leaders to play as. I love the diversity of the leaders and that there are so many that wouldn't necessarily be the first to spring to mind. It really allows so many different games to play out.

This I think will probably be my most favourite civ game. Civ 6 and 7 took more of a "board game" approach with basically trying to create a good game with interesting mechanics and *then* smacking history elements on it. Problem with that approach is that you end up with mechanics that feel so detached from history that you could barely call it a history game. Oh, let me spend 3 turns to put this eternal governor into this city that magically makes it immune to disasters or makes pops grow faster. I mean civ 5 also has plenty of that, but at least it makes some mechanics ***feel*** believable. Like you actually are re-creating the great roman empire with millions of people or something. Also civ 5 feels less micro-managey compared to 6. I'm also gonna not even really bother comparing to 7 seeing as how it's kinda a buggy mess. Anyways, I like Paradox Interactive games more since their mechanics feel more "how can we create a mechanic that allows this historic event to take place (in a fun way)" and I find them much more engaging since I can like compare myself to real life entities, which is neat. Back to 5. Uh the multiplayer is a gitchy mess (seems to be a common theme with civ). The mods are good though! I wanna say most of the hours I have in this game are playing modded singleplayer. There are some big ol' packs out there like Vox Populi but there are still some active modders creating new mods for the game 15 years after release which is pretty cool.

I bot Civ 6 when it came out and didn't care for the changes. I didn't even consider buying Civ 7 cause I already own Humankind, and Civ 7 just looks like Humankind with meh characters as leaders where you have to change civs.

I like the strategy aspects at all levels; needing to manage and balance investments in social policy, science, economics, and military. Always engaging as you can change the geography, civilizations you are playing with, and degree of difficulty. The AI is better than previous versions, which makes it tough at the higher settings that give the computer an edge in the speed of development of other civilizations.

This is an exceptional and versatile game. Whether you are looking for a multiple-era-spanning journey or a quick nuclear war, you can find a way to have fun in Civ 5. What makes it truly stand out from many other fun games, however, is its ability to weave bits of real history into whatever craziness you end up in. I will never tire of hearing wise or quippy quotations from some of the great voices of history while enjoying that one...more...turn.

Put more time into Civ VI due to playing with friends more, but Civ VI did make me appreciate the game play of V more. Civ V has a more basic approach to actual game play yet the trade off is that it is easier to deal with players that are snowballing. In Civ VI games can easily snowball with little to no hope of coming back. The district system that was brought into VI was a nice touch, but it basically caused a shift to happen in game play where builders aren't necessary which is a major change of pace from V.

got back to playing civ 5 a few weeks later and wow, the game is unstable and crashes at random, whether it be modded with compatible mods and unmodded by uninstalling and reinstalling the game with a fresh slate, it has the same issues. if you plan on buying this game, beware, it may crash for no reason. yes, i checked on forums and all of them did not work. is the game good? is one of the best games of the civ franchise.

If you’ve ever wanted to spend 10 hours on a Saturday afternoon just one more turning, Civ V is your new best friend. One minute, you’re making peace treaties and establishing trade routes; the next, you’re at war with your best friend because they just had to steal that one city-state you were eyeing. It’s like playing a really long, complicated game of chess with a touch of global domination and a whole lot of “oops, I messed up." But hey, if you enjoy plotting world domination while slowly questioning your life choices, Civ V is your ultimate time sink. Just remember: there’s no such thing as "just one more turn." You’ve been warned!

Classic weak development strategy of using anti-player tactics instead of legitimate difficulty. What's the point of playing if anything will get deleted for any reason? What's the point of playing if it's literally a diceroll as to whether or not the AI will or won't decide your game is over? Can you win? Well, yes...and the odds are directly associated with the difficulty, which means it's not a difficulty setting so much as diceroll odds. I don't deny that if you play enough you can accommodate for said dicerolls, but are you playing a game or memorizing probability tables? That's not difficulty, that's just applied math. Gimme a difficult game, please.

Don't even buy 6 or 7, they don't make em like this here. It's pretty visibly dated at this point... idgaf. What would you prefer, preordering 60 bucks of mid and pray that the company that already fleeced you of your money patches it through paid dlc, or get the game that was already half a decade old by 2015 so the game and all its dlcs are like 30 bucks over the summer? My grandkids are gonna have to endure this same rant except by then I'll probably have a Valium IV bag that they can hook me to to shut me up.

Probably the best Civ game in the entire series. And yes, I am including Civ 7 in there as well. Civ 6 was decent and pretty good, but Civ 5 is probably the last 'real' civ experience before they started changing things in Civ 6 and God only knows what Civ 7 is (total disaster). I would consider Civ 5 to be the end of the Civ series for 'pure' original civ gameplay. You could include Civ 6 if you can tolerate all the weirdness with districts and other stuff. Civ 7 is not really a civ game at all so that wouldn't be in the series at all as far as I am concerned. I would even consider Alpha Centuri and Beyond Earth to be more Civ like than Civ 7. So, after a long journey from Civ 1 to Civ 6 including Alpha C and BE I've reached my conclusion that the last authentic and real civ experience is Civ 5 and that the series was destroyed with the release of Civ 7.

As a newbie gamer AND a newbie to civ, this civ is very entertaining! I bought the complete package and i have no complaints. I was debating whether to get civ7 and settled with civ 5 for practice in hopes of buying civ 7 later but there is so much fun in civ5 itself that I'm not interested in civ7 AT ALL. If you are new to the civ franchise, DEFINITELY buy this civ! It doesn't feel like an outdated game at all and I'm always excited to start where i left off when coming back from work.

A wild ride with how unpredictable the AI can be. Maybe they'll be friends. Maybe they'll nuke you. Oil is life so no matter which country you pick you may as well name it America.
