When this indie title debuted in 2013, it was a remarkable achievement that stood out within its genre, offering a fresh and engaging experience. However, revisiting it in the present day, absent the influence of nostalgia, reveals a work that now feels modest in scope and execution. While I continue to hold a sincere appreciation for what it once represented, the game's mechanics are elementary, its design is restrained, and its overall depth is limited. Upon completion, one is left with the impression that it lacks substantial content or meaningful progression. Nevertheless, its significance should not be understated, as it served as a foundational step in Klei’s creative trajectory, ultimately leading to the development of far more sophisticated and compelling titles such as Oxygen Not Included and Griftlands. Although I still encourage others to experience it, particularly those interested in the evolution of independent game development, it is best approached with tempered expectations, as it falls short of delivering a truly lasting or transformative experience.

This is a great game, but I recommend getting Don't Starve Together instead. If you want to play Hamlet you'll need this; for anything else imo DST is just a better version, even playing alone.

So fun that I literally had to take a lengthy detox from this game because I was taking extended bathroom breaks at work just to play it on my phone. My very first time playing it was a little bit confusing due to the lack of a tutorial, but I actually grew to appreciate that aspect. I really love that I can tweak the availability of resources, day/night length and number of particular kinds of monsters--the FREAKING walking trees, in particular, I'm grateful to be able to cut down on lol.

This is one of those games that stands the test of time. The mechanics are deceptively simple, while still allowing for a very complicated set of interactions between the player, the items in the world, and the mobs and playing environment. As you develop your skill in the game world, you will still find new challenges available. It's easy to get immersed in the game's lore, as well, which adds a greater sense of fascination of the world you're working in. I first played this game twelve years ago, about the time that the Reign of Giants DLC was being released. Since then, I've come to love the other game worlds, as well, with Shipwrecked being my favorite by far. I also find myself frequently coming back to Don't Starve, even though other worlds may be flashier or have more photorealistic detail, the challenge, the complexity, and the immersion I can get with Don't Starve is fantastic. Kudos to Klei for a superb game!

I am really not a fan of games that don't tell you how to play first. I'm ok with minimal direction, but this game is more complicated than it should be, when it gives you no idea of what to do. It's complicated enough to have several button choices and a huge list of things to do, but nothing is highlighted to give any kind of idea of what you can or cannot do. There are monsters around, but no info on how to heal or fight back. You have to move around and collect materials, but for what? The Binding of Isaac and Dark Souls have more "how to play" than this. I understand there are gamers that enjoy this sort of thing and power to them. I'm not one of them.

🎮 A Masterpiece of Survival and Style 🌿 Don’t Starve is one of the most unique and addicting survival games I’ve ever played. The hand-drawn, Tim Burton-esque art style is gorgeous and sets a hauntingly whimsical tone that makes the world feel alive—and dangerous. From the moment you wake up in this mysterious wilderness, the game does a perfect job of pushing you to explore, experiment, and learn through trial and error. The challenge is real. There's no hand-holding, and every failure teaches you something new. Whether it's figuring out how to stay warm during winter or fending off nightmarish hounds, Don’t Starve keeps you on your toes. And yet, despite the difficulty, it never feels unfair—it feels rewarding. Crafting, base-building, and survival all mesh together smoothly. The variety of biomes, creatures, and seasons gives the game incredible replayability. Plus, once you get the hang of it, you start discovering deeper mechanics, secrets, and lore hidden in the world. Bonus points for Don’t Starve Together, which adds a multiplayer twist that’s just as fun (and chaotic) with friends. Pros: Stunning and unique art style Deep survival and crafting systems Tons of replayability and updates Constantly evolving world No two runs feel the same If you're into survival games that respect your intelligence and creativity, Don’t Starve is a must-have. Just remember... stay away from the dark. 🔥

A very fun survival game with a personality. Replayed it recently and it still holds up so long as you use a few convenience mods from workshop. You'll find your own way to survive among many viable options in an interesting world with lots to explore. If you don't like something in the game, you can always generate a custom random world that doesn't have it. A feature more survival games should have. Reign of Giants DLC wasn't my cup of tea as it adds more things I had to keep in check during seasons where I want to venture out and do things, but I can always generate a classic world instead. Absolute banger.

It is a great game with a lot of content and unique art style. The game don't tell you what you need to do, you need to explore everything around you and figure out how things work. The game is really hard (at least in my perspective), it takes too much time to be good at the game, this is the game that I most felt that survival experience by far. If you are a player that likes to learn games slowly by trying I think you will love this game.

I really do enjoy how it's never really the same game during each play through. Some people may not like games where the environment changes on character death, but I enjoy how you have to adapt your strategy for survival because of resource availability changes. It's makes the game fun, frustrating (in a good way), interesting, and exciting.

I wanted to like everything about this game's style, but the permadeath combined with 8bit combat is too much.

You either love this game or hate it. I fall into the unlucky group and don't really like it. Unfortunately the lack of direction this game gives is kinda irksome, I spent a good 30 minutes wandering for gold, not really knowing what I was looking for until I searched it up. And the idea of needing to search something up in a game to progress is really unappealing in my eyes. Buy the game and test it out. Personally, I would only get it when it's on sale as it's a couple of bucks and that's a steal regardless. TLDR: If you dislike Terraria, you're going to dislike Don't Starve.

the game is called don't starve but you never starve and die you only die in search of food and you have to keep watching for your character sanity and YOUR sanity i have so much to complain about but it's the fun part that it's hard to play no lgbtq references so far 10/10 .

Yeah I know only 2.6 hours, PUNY! But from this time (I know I can’t judge it properly) my terraria loving self is already falling in love with this game and I love the fact that every run you can get even further than the last. I don’t know many of the mechanics but I love how you can customise the world by adding more food, resources, or even less enemies and longer days (meaning less torches etc needed) Also there seems to be a lot of lore going on as there are many characters (funny blind scientist man is my favourite) and so many enemies, like the pig people, they so funky, one guy killed a spider for me such a nice guy! Then I preceded to kill him for food. Finally I really like the difficulty of the game as from being funny scientist man with dietary requirements to setting everything on fire with crazy lady, and the other characters I haven’t unlocked, weird strong guy, tin man, ABAGAIL, yes that is a terraria reference. Crazy lady with tho book thing, kid with the balloons and others I can’t be bothered noting. Aight cya play terraria

I love the game but since 2023 I can't play it with my dualshock 5 controller on my M1 macbook pro. I don't think the devs care at alllll because I've heard the same issue from other people as well. It should have an easy solution or a simple bugfix but the last update was in 2023...

W game has less content than the multiplayer game but this game has the surviving charm in switching worlds still being hard and for me was like a more relaxed experiance def if you want to buy get all 3 of the DLC RoG is just the basic game kinda without this the game doesnt feel complete Shipwrecked a troppical "safe heaven" looks really lively and its really nice to look at one fo the best places to megabase, if u want to you can live in the VOLCANO bc bosses wont spawn and moonsoons wont make puddles. (TIP) if you make it compatible with hamlet wich you definetly should you can use the brain of though to get hamlet houses without ever touching hamlet Hamlet: W experiance interesting bosses, harder seasons but still pretty fun Its the best palce to megabase as there no nogrow seasons so plants wont wither except if you dont burn them themselfs then mostlikely they will :) in conclusion 10/10 game, fun, hard, good looking but 1000% get all the DLCS for the best experiance

One of the best games I've ever played! It is recommended to go in without research and trying to experiment and learn from you're mistakes! If you like survival games, this is one of, if not, the best survival game there is! Remember: Don't Starve!
