This game is great, but is pretty much a complete downgrade from the sequel. I won't be mentioning any of the amazing things about the games in this review, just go read my DST review for that, but I will be saying what this version lacks compared to the sequel. What used to be the main reason people got this version over the sequel was the DLC, but both DLCs "unique" in this version of the game have been fully modded into the sequel, with complete approval of the developers (Klei), which while that is amazing, it does mean that the main thing this version had over the new and improved version is gone. The same thing goes for the unique characters, they've been modded into DST. And the old crafting menu, (which is MUCH worse and people only like because of stubbornness and nostalgia) has been modded in. So what does this version offer? The old farming system, which is much more bland, it's lower risk and less reward which is not what this game is about. (Has been modded into the new game but you can't get rid of the new version) The older characters, which are much worse but because of that, a little more fitting, since the game is meant to be difficult. Though, I still prefer the new versions of the characters, as they are all more even in usefulness and more interesting/fun to play. And lastly, the "storymode" which isn't actually a storymode, it's more like a gauntlet with sprinkles of lore, and of course, this has also been modded into the sequel, but of course nothing beats the real deal. TL;DR: Buy the sequel instead.

A great game that best uses the perma-death mechanic. Timeless art style, immersive environment, Don't Starve won't hold your hand and that's what's good about it.

Don’t Starve is a survival game that doesn’t hold your hand—it slaps it away, sets it on fire, and then lets a shadow monster finish the job. And somehow, that’s what makes it brilliant. Set in a hauntingly whimsical, Tim Burton-esque world, you play as Wilson (or one of many unlockable characters), dropped into the wilderness with nothing but your wits and a disturbingly short to-do list: survive. From the get-go, Don’t Starve sets the tone—this is a game where every choice matters, and every mistake is just one bad night away from disaster. What sets Don’t Starve apart is its perfect blend of charm and cruelty. The hand-drawn art style is gorgeous, filled with creepy-cute creatures and weird flora, but beneath that lovely surface is a ruthless ecosystem of hunger, insanity, and the creeping darkness that literally kills you. Managing your health, hunger, and sanity becomes a tense juggling act as the days tick by, each season introducing new threats, from freezing winters to frog rains (yes, really). Crafting is deep and rewarding, encouraging exploration and experimentation. You'll go from eating berries and hiding from spiders to building alchemy engines, taming beefalo, and mapping out your own twisted little empire—if you live that long. While death is permanent, it rarely feels unfair. Every failure teaches you something, and every new run feels like an opportunity to do better. It’s punishing, yes—but also deeply satisfying. Don’t Starve is a masterclass in atmospheric, systems-driven survival design. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you enjoy learning through failure and thrive under pressure, this game will dig its claws into you—in the best possible way. Rating: 9/10

10 hours deep into this game. Some scary nights pass by ...some don’t. 😛 You learn after you die, of course, and there’s a huge learning curve. Sucks that when you start the game, you're left wondering with no clues... but it gets better each time.

It's really hard but extremely addictive. The sandbox survival can be quite challenging yet not comparable to the Adventure Mode, absolute madness. This game is not easy to learn nor master, but it makes the process engaging. The DLC's add fun variety and characters have cool mechanics and lore. Game has tons of replayability. P.S if you don't enjoy permadeath this game might not be for you. It's not a Terraria or a Minecraft, really stressful. If you enjoy not knowing what you're doing by all means go ahead.

This game is hard and unforgiving, You will die. Alot. That being said, I'd recommend playing the base dont starve before you try any of the DLC's. Specifically hamlet and shipwrecked are very much so built on the processes the base game forces you to learn to muscle memory. This game is amazing the lerning curve is step but maybe the most rewarding of any game ive played. I have 2 worlds on my PS4 that are 1000+ days plus. this game has an amazing abailty of keeping you entertained and learning new processes during the entire learning process. I still feel like im learning alot with dont starve with the new DLCs. Great game and i could not recommend it more.

For beginners it's just a nightmare. Moreover it doesn't support Xbox controller at all... It was made for those who knows how to play this game. For me as a newby it was just unpredictable nighmare to play. Don't like it at all

very fun and rewarding game. Some might say don't starve together is better but this game is still great for a single player experience, mainly because of its two DLCs shipwrecked and hamlet but just the base game is very fun.

Never even fully completed the game, but it was fun. Is it worth buying this when DST exists? Maybe, but at this point worth playing for different experience and dlcs, which change gameplay drastically.

A classic of the survival genre. If you have played games like Minecraft then you already have an idea of what to expect, but Don't Starve still brings new ideas to stand out on it's own. My only complaint is that this game suffers from the same problems that so many Survival games suffer from. It starts off strong, but after a few hours you will run out of things to do.

It's the best game i've ever played! Maybe even better then Minecraft. Those monsters in there are stronger than you and you shan't starve. Because you need to find goods and treasures.. BUT the most important thing in this game is Don't Loss Your Sanity! If you'll loss it you'll die from shadow monsters. For keeping a high amount of sanity just find green mushrooms and cook them. then eat them when your sanity's low. And that's the key for successes.

Everything wants you dead in this game. Dogs will periodically mug you, trees will come alive to avenge their fallen brothers, frogs will rain from the sky, and you probably won't survive the winter or the summer. But that's what makes it so fun, trying to pull through regardless of the odds stacked against you.

Don't Starve is a unique and engaging survival experience that punishes carelessness and rewards persistence. Its blend of charm and challenge makes it a standout in the genre, which is why it's one of my favorite survival games.

It's one of those games that you get roped into buying only to realise that you have neither the time, nor the dedication to sinks hundreds (or thousands) of hours into, to truly appreciate the depth of it's content.

i would recommend this to players of the likes of genocide specialists, this, long, unforgiving, and tormenting world of don't starve, whit all of its sorrow, lies, and misinterpretations, it creates a landscape, completed by those with a genocide mindset, to do it, just cause, even with no reward for your hours and hours, and hours of torment, lives gone and lost, where death, is a joke to you. This is the few moments of pain found in your joy. This, is Don't Starve

Overall I would recommend the game because it is fun. That being said, after several attempts and 16 hours of playtime the new is wearing off and the fun is starting to drift into irritation. Food and finding food is so overwhelming difficult and keeps you continuously on the precipice of death that it makes progressing in anything else very tedious. It's hard to even look through the menus and figure out what you need, what you want to try to make or what you might have the resources to craft, because in the 5 minutes you spend doing that, nearly an entire day passes and you have to build a campfire, cook some food, eat it and maybe sleep(if possible), and then you're out of food again so screw everything you were just contemplating and spend the next two days hunting for food again. I read through other reviews and it appears there are ways to get past this with farming and such, but with the random monster encounters and how hard it is to heal yourself, I have yet to make it that far. I had a farm once and it grew one carrot and then I froze to death, so, at least I didn't starve I guess, lol.

Love the visuals. The game has an absolutely unique art-style and audio. Skill demanding (which is not a bad thing!). In my opinion, it may be hard to understand the complex mechanics of the game for a younger audience. Therefore, I would not recommend it to people below 13. But I love that everything in the game is interconnected. Mechanicks are never used for something once, so you can be sure that you'll need all of your knowledge and skills to thrive.

Most of my hours for this game are on my Switch. Riddled with bugs and blurry sprites, but otherwise still a great survival experience despite DST taking over the franchise. I will always believe that Adventure Mode is one of if not the best part of the entirety of Don't Starve, so honestly I could definitely see the appeal of playing this over DST if you're by yourself.

A fun and interesting game that combines survival and base building in a way that keeps you coming back! Crafting is simple and has a wide variety of items to choose from. traversal is fun and although the camera can feel slightly jarring at times, is still a welcome edition. I highly recommend this game to anyone reading, especially now, during the summer sale when its at its cheapest.

A really cute game! This game actually has sort of ruined crafting games as a genre, for me. It ramps very well, and every run has its charms and follies. You'll play the role of one of a small cast of unfortunates who are for some reason subject to the sadistic whims of a devil-like character who has stranded you in unexplored terrain. You have to eke out a living, harvesting resources, fending off monsters, and most importantly: not starving. The art style is a good blend of gloomy and cute, sound design is really engaging and funny, and some of the absurd "story elements" have made me laugh out loud, even as I'm being obliterated into permadeath. Great game, fully plan to play it again eventually. Also check out the multiplayer "Don't Starve Together"!

A great game that is the definition of "Fuck around and Find out." Very little direction but pretty self intuitive if you're at all verse in survival. Very fun. Honestly one of my favorites.

I've been playing this game since it came out. It never gets old. I recommend it to everyone who will listen to me. Its art is unmatched and it is complex enough to keep you entertained for years while also not overwhelming. I mean it can be overwhelming but its easy to learn and be good at it. I own it on my phone, switch, and PC.

A rather challenging survival game! I've really enjoyed my time with it. The game does demand wicked planning capabilities. I would recommend playing with the Reign of Giants DLC, as It adds even more to the gameplay. There is also a multiplayer version if that suits your fancy.

Love the game, but needs to be updated where you can have another character in your world to help you, like a bot, where you can select what character this bot can be, then they can do the functions of their powers automatically. Help you fight. Help you collect things. Or can have multiple bots. Similar to Sims where you can control all the characters and switch between them. This I would love to see in the future cause I have had this game for years! but soooo difficult when you have no one to play with unfortunately. I have the together pack but the groups kick you out when they dont know who you are sadly.

it's pretty good, though something is technically directly better than it also before i head into this i wanna say i play Don't Starve Together It's technically worse than Don't Starve Together, but for some reason this one just feels different. Like it has some unique charm to it that even DST doesn't replicate. I imagine it's probably more appreciable if you're a veteran from before DST, like me. DST is better and has more content and is under developer support still, however, DST doesn't have the DLCs Shipwrecked and Hamlet, which the original Don't Starve has, but modded ports to DST are under development. If it were somebody's first time trying the Don't Starve franchise, I'd say not to buy this one and just skip to DST unless they're interested in the lore and want to learn it without looking it up on the internet more than necessary.

Pros: • Very fun • You can choose your own path • You can play the game for as long as you want (it is infinite.) • You can build your base however you want • Various characters (Look up "How to get Webber Don't Starve RoG" Only do that if you have the Reign of Giants DLC.) • Cheap price (especially during the Klei Entertainment Sale) • Single player if you are an introvert (unless you get Don't Starve Together) • You could run it on a potato Cons: • Very hard • When you die, you have to restart the entire game • VERY steep learning curve ★★★★☆

Too hard. When I play games, I like to win. Starting over isn't fun. The controls are wonky as you get stuck with items in your hand, items canceling out your actions. Too many items to craft with and not enough places to store them. I feel like i'm playing Starcraft 2 against ultra hard AI. Impossible to win.
