In Viscera Cleanup Detail, you step into the boots of a space-station janitor tasked with cleaning up after various horrific sci-fi horror events. Instead of machineguns and plasma-rifles, your tools are a mop and bucket. That hero left a mess, and it's up to you to deal with the aftermath.

I have had Viscera Cleanup Detail since - March 22, 2021. I always thought to myself - why did I buy this? Well, back then I really didn't like these types of games but as I am getting older... it's just so nice and therapeutic to sit back, hassle free, put my feet up and... clean! No need to worry about being the BEST shooter in the world. No need to be competitive. No need for all that stress and anxiety. What Viscera Cleanup Detail gives you, is a relaxing cleaning job. Think of it like - someone else has cleared a "mission" on a game and now it's up to YOU, the JANITOR to clean that area/level of all the, well, you guessed it - Viscera! Below I am going to do an "ALL-IN-ONE" review of the DLC's and base game rather than going DLC to DLC to write about it, just to make it more simpler for others!
The Base Game
So the base game has 22 levels for you to complete. Only 18 of these actually matter. Each map is unique with collectables, notes, lore and easter eggs! Have fun doing Bob's Legacy, not going to spoil what's in there but you can also get a minecraft, Half-life, The Matrix, Dead Space collectables, and so much more! These maps can take HOURS to clean. One map took me 4 hours to clean for example. They all have ETA on them before you start the level which is good! If you ever choose to leave and come back, please, PLEASE save IN the level before you leave. I made a bad mistake of letting my auto-save handle it for me.... lost about 2 or so hours of progress... WHY DIDN'T MY GAME SAVE!!!! DAMN!!! Oh well! Now, it's not always "fun and games", the game does come with a few... issues (given it's age). In each of these areas you can sometimes encounter bugs like PID's getting stuck in the floor, garbage being pinged across the map when you put it in the little garbage box's, items being pinged to out-of-bounds areas and a few other issues. Save often is the advice I would give you. Oh and also, you need to clean 80% of the map or you get FIRED and loose everything you have collected and stored in your office. BE WARNED!!!
House of Horrors
I just want to say - this "DLC" is absolutely FANTASTIC! I enjoyed every single moment of it! All the classic horror movie references like - Bad Dreams on Helm Street (Nightmare on Elm Street), The Shimmering (The Shining), Thursday the 12th (Friday the 13th), Harroween (Halloween), and Wicked Unliving (Evil Dead). You even get a Lord of the Rings reference https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3514870268 As a horror fanatic when it comes to movies, all of this in this map was just... a dream. Finding Freddy's claw or Micheal's mask and knife.... oh man. This DLC is a 9/10! The only issue I had was the woodchipper. sometimes it would spit junk out and it would ping to out-of-bounds areas or it would ping items all over the place, sometimes adding on extra work that's not needed, but hey, you get to fill your neighbours backyard with blood, guts, trash and PURE EVIL!
The Vulcan Affair
What can I say about this one, oh boy. You are tasked with cleaning Dr. Hades sprawling volcano lair which, is filled to the brim with Viscera. This level has so many references to the 007 and Austin powers movies. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3515345847 From the moment you start this level to the moment you open up that first door and see that pool of menacing... LASER SHARKS?!?! HOLY MOLY!!! I tossed so much garbage into them they must be sick and tired of me by now! To top that off, you get to use a giant ORBITAL LASER to destroy trash, and yourself if you walk into it like I did holding the big banger, I know I know, I should have known. So much to find! Go explore, its a massive area!! The only thing that I didn't like was the "coop" collectables. I had to find someone to play with to do some collectables. So you NEED a friend for this level sadly. I'd personally say this is a 8/10 mission!
Santa's Rampage
This one was hilarious to do. Imagine if Santa got angry after all the "I want this, I want that" notes, got drunk off his a** and went on a killing spree in his own workshop. Well, that's exactly what happened. He chopped his little elves to shreds, blew up his own area, eviscerated his own reindeer (poor Rudolph) and disappeared (probably to go join Krampus). I had fun not destroying the presents, candy canes, christmas baubles and such. This was a very unique little level for this. I also got to take home 6 guns, 7 elf heads, 4 rook statues, some TNT (because why not) and poor Rudolph's Red nose, It actually glows too! Oh, and let's not forget about St. Nicks Boomstick! Oh how I wish I could point this at an elf and fire it and watch it explode, just for fun! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3514952124 Santa's Rampage also has an achievement I don't like - GET FIRED. Which reset's your ENTIRE office, all your collectables too. I left this till the very end. I wasn't to happy about this one but... It had to be done to 100% the game sadly, and yes... I lost everything in my 80 hours of collecting and cleaning. Personally, I'd rate this level 7/10 also, just because of that achievement ruining it a little.
Shadow Warrior
I want to start by saying this - CAN THE JANITOR SHUT UP!!! Haha!! He talks so much. I get it, it's Shadow Warrior but man... I don't need the same line 10x in a row for picking up glass... come on!!! but anyway, this was a rather... small level, I can't lie. No collectables but the 2 million dollars you can find. That's it. It's a basic cleaning level. You collect your PID's, the money, clean, burn - repeat till it's clean. I was rather disappointed with this one to be honest. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3515035416 I opted to take my own collectables, like the katana, SMG, some shurikens and... some internal organs, don't judge me!! Yeah, this map was rather... bland so, I'd have to give it a 5/10 sadly.
TL;DR - My Verdict
So, after all is said and done - I feel like I missed out HARD on Viscera Cleanup Detail... I can definitely say, this is the OG Powerwash Simulator. I wouldn't go as far as to say that VCD is better than Powerwash simulator because it's older than it and it sure does show at times, but hey, Runestorm confirmed work on a VCD2!!!! Which is absolutely excellent news!! VCD kept me busy for 80 hours, it could and probably would keep me here for another... 100+ hours, but I have other game's to play! It's definitely out-dated but non-the-less an excellent "cleaning" game that quells anxiety and let's you sit back and enjoy something without the stress of being "THE BEST" at whatever game it is you are playing! Sorry Runestorm I got into this so late. VCD is amazing and I will not be missing out on VCD2!!
9/10 - Viscera Cleanup Detail is a little dated now but still an exceptional game filled to the brim with easter eggs, movie references and relaxation! Get cleaning Janitors!
A relaxing game about cleaning up, and can be done with friends. Just don't let your parents find out you like to clean in a videogame when you barely do it in real life.

Very bittersweet review: Why it's fun:

The cleaning and throwing out mechanics are very satisfying
The levels have good designs and are unique enough that each one feels like a new experience
Why it's not fun:

Completing a level til the point where you "pass" the level and get the achievement for completing it requires taking the nose detector around the entire level, finding out where it beeps, and passing the mop everywhere around there, even if you see nothing, just because there must be a pixel of blood somewhere that is making you fail the level
Some levels (at least 'Overgrowth') give you a "DEMOTED" rating (failed) even if the beep-O-meter beeps NOWHERE. To pass that level I had to cheat with the employee's pendrives, searching for the correct answers on the internet
This isn't fun
This game is ten years old at time of writing so obviously keep that in mind, but even WITH that in mind, it's a shockingly poor entry in the job sim field. It's very clearly more interested in having you pile into a lobby with a few friends who think it's funny to relentlessly grief each other than it is offering a decent experience. A few pros and cons: Pros: - The maps are expansive, and can give you a good couple hours to zone out with while listening to podcasts each - Each map tells a story, and the end-of-job report encourages you to piece them together (assuming you care about the reports, anyway) Cons: - the weight assigned to items seems random. It may be that everything has the same weight. You will constantly bump into things, knock your buckets over, and occasionally dump out a waste bin because you put an arm into it too intensely or something. - in any closed space, you will be catching on walls and rails constantly while carrying something that will, as previously mentioned, proceed to dump its contents out. - the machines that give you buckets and bins will occasionally spit out limbs, giving you extra work for no apparent reason other than "lol isn't it funny when the game itself griefs you" - there is no reticle, and the only thing approaching it you can optionally turn on is ridiculously huge, to the point of uselessness. Instead, the object you will pick up is highlighted, and if you aren't fully paying attention and playing idiot wrangler with the targeting system, you will frequently find yourself picking up things you don't mean to. Which of course means accidentally dumping buckets and bins and etc. If you and your friends like wasting each others' time then it's probably a grand time. If not, it's too frustratingly put together to justify. I wish I hadn't gone over the refund cutoff trying to like it.

The vibe of the game feels great, and the cleaning part is pure satisfaction for me. It's a good thing it had a huge discount, because I've wanted to play it for a long time.

I love cleaning games usually, but this was just a frustrating mess. There's no tutorial explaining the game's fundamentals and the fucking bucket can't stand on its own half the time so you have to re-clean the same spot 5 times if you accidentally nudge it or hit it too hard with your mop.

I love to unwind after work with this game. It's a great mix of satisfying and infuriating immersive gameplay that really helps me relax. If you like organization and cleaning games, this might be for you but like maybe quit after the fifth bucket of guts you drop and trip over and call it a night.

Its a fun cheap game to play. If you like power washer simulator, farming sim etc you will love this game! It has some great DLC's that are cheap as well. Got bored today and decided to reinstall and did not regret it.

Scrub goo & viscera off of walls, throw everything from trash to intestines to alien limbs into an incinerator, zap away bullet holes, and leave the place spotless for the new buyers! You're the cleanup crew, so do a good job and try not to get fired like the last guy. Oh, and try not to make an even bigger mess of the place, newbie.

not only is it a cool cleaning game but I appreciate the fact that you can pick up pieces of the story and the world by reading the reports people made before they died, and the music on the big banger radio is fire, Love this game fr

Used to play this game in the past, very glad to have found it again. It has a lot of new features and maps that I was not expecting and, though some things can be quite frustrating (like how at times the water buckets spill over even though they remain in the same place, or how the machines are so far apart in some of the new maps for reasons I cannot understand), it is a wonderful game that I always found quite relaxing, especially to keep the mind occupied. I love cleaning irl, and to be able to organize things in a game as well is something I quite enjoy, especially seeing how things turn from a mess to then be ableto look back and see an, often, drastic change.

I don't think I've ever cleaned this much in my life. Sometimes I just want to quit mid game and leave a mess behind but I can never bring myself to do it. It may just be a virtual report and grade I get at the end but man do I live for it. 10/10 game, for sure will play it some more! Grew up watching people play Viscera and I can say I don't regret buying it!

Viscera Cleanup Detail is a unique and compelling simulation game that offers players an unconventional yet deeply immersive experience centered around the aftermath of sci-fi battles and hazardous accidents. Unlike traditional games that focus on combat, exploration, or storytelling, Viscera Cleanup Detail places players in the role of a space station janitor tasked with meticulously cleaning up the chaos left behind after catastrophic events. This premise may seem mundane at first glance, but the game’s execution transforms it into a highly engaging and surprisingly satisfying experience that emphasizes attention to detail, patience, and a sense of accomplishment. One of the most striking aspects of Viscera Cleanup Detail is its meticulous gameplay mechanics. Players are equipped with a variety of cleaning tools, including mops, buckets, biohazard waste disposal units, and even specialized equipment for handling hazardous materials. The game accurately simulates the physical act of cleaning, requiring players to scrub floors, remove bloodstains, pick up debris, and dispose of body parts and gore in a systematic manner. This process demands a level of precision and care that is both challenging and rewarding. The game’s physics engine enhances this realism, making the cleaning process feel tangible and satisfying, especially when stains are finally eradicated or clutter is cleared away. It taps into a niche of gameplay that can be surprisingly therapeutic, as players find themselves engrossed in the repetitive yet gratifying task of restoring order from chaos. Viscera Cleanup Detail also excels in its atmospheric design, creating a surprisingly immersive environment that draws players into its eerie, abandoned space station setting. The detailed environments, combined with the ambient sounds of dripping fluids, distant alarms, and creaking metal, effectively evoke a sense of desolation and neglect. The game balances a dark, grimy aesthetic with touches of humor and absurdity, particularly in the bizarre and grotesque remnants left behind after each disaster. This blend of horror and humor gives the game a unique tone that keeps players engaged and occasionally amused, despite the grisly subject matter. Furthermore, the game’s open-ended nature allows players to approach cleanup tasks in any order they see fit, encouraging exploration and personal pacing. The multiplayer component adds another layer of depth, enabling players to work cooperatively or competitively in cleaning up the mess. This social aspect can turn what might initially seem like a solitary chore into a collaborative or humorous experience, as players coordinate efforts or compete to complete tasks more efficiently. The game’s modding support also extends its lifespan, allowing the community to create custom maps, tools, and modifications that enhance gameplay or introduce new challenges. Overall, Viscera Cleanup Detail stands out as an innovative title that redefines what a simulation game can be, transforming a seemingly mundane task into a complex, immersive, and oddly satisfying experience. Its combination of realistic mechanics, atmospheric design, and quirky humor makes it a memorable title for players seeking something different and thought-provoking in the gaming landscape. Rating: 8/10

I have put a lot of hours into this game and still haven't 100% every mission yet, lol. I love the little stories with each mission, too. I enjoy the fact you're just a janitor cleaning up the mess that a hero made. I think this was my very first simulator game and at that time I didn't even know it was, lmao. It can be a little frustrating at times if you're a bit too impatient with your mop and end up making more of a mess, or the device that is supposed to get rid of the bullet holes, etc. But like I said that's only if you're being a bit too impatient. It is funny, and annoying, when you're trying to get a new bucket or yellow container only for a messy limb to be brought instead causing more of a mess, lmao. If you're into quirky, funny simulator games that involve cleaning this is definitely worth it. Also, you really can't beat the price for it, too, especially when it's on sale! I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys such games!

The OG powerwash simulator. I'm gonna be honest, this game is designed for singleplayer only. The physics of this game is so bad in multiplayer that your entire waste bin just turns into a cannon and sends everything in it flying upwards. Although it is 10 times more fun to play with friends but it is not recommended.

This game is criminally slept on. Viscera Cleanup Detail takes a bizarre concept, cleaning up blood-soaked sci-fi messes, and turns it into an immersive, satisfying, and genuinely hilarious co-op experience. I played this a lot with friends, and every session felt like chaotic fun. The aesthetic is super cool, the physics are weirdly satisfying, and the core loop never gets old if you’re playing with the right people. It’s one of those games that just feels like a classic PC experience, janky in the best way, full of charm, and incredibly well-made for what it is. Way ahead of the job sim trend too, and you can really feel that in the originality of the design. I wish more games were this confident in their weirdness. Would love to jump back in with more friends again someday.

cant wait for the update where the devs make the online playable instead of fucking around for almost ten years on a boring singleplayer game with a feature where you can make your friends suffer through the promise of pretending they'll be able to play an actual game instead of rubberbanding at 20 ping. tl;dr: impressively dogshit netcode

I really like this game single-player. But my friends were over and we all hopped into a split-screen and the camera controls were bugged and everyone had inverted y-axis but me because i was player one and we couldn't fix it and it got so infuriating we had to close the game. My friends don't wanna buy the game if one of us has it. Please fix this in VCD 2. I would love to see better split-screen multiplayer with less bugs. like sometimes in the split-screen one of our cameras would flip 90 degrees. I'm begging you RuneStorm

This isn't fun. This is frustrating. You keep tipping stuff over, there are zero QoL features I came across. Everything gets even messier in the process of solving a level. You don't see any progress whilst playing, more the opposite of it.
