Replicant was an unexpected experience for me. I had bought it at the same time as Automata (which at time of review I have still not played) and was expecting it to be little more than a slightly edgy JRPG of which I am no stranger to. In all fairness, it falls into that category quite nicely, but I can't help but feel there's a greater depth to the characters and the story that isn't commonly found in videogames. Even games that go out of their way to give you agency and backstory and craft complex narratives don't feel as good. To try and put it into words, many games break immersion because characters fail to feel real, they may make decisions that make sense based on their character archetypes and act in ways that give them lifelike qualities, but from the player's perspective it's like seeing a veneer of what a complex person is. Things are often too calculated or people act too predictably to really sell themselves as living parts of the world instead of interactive set pieces and dialogue dispensers.
Replicant on the other hand, partially because there is very little player agency, creates characters that are considerably more lifelike in their tendencies. The main character for one is undoubtedly a hero in the eyes of the people. He does everything right, has noble goals, and never once are his actions seriously put in a questionable light, but as the game goes on the hatred consuming him is clear to see. The game never rectifies it, justifies it, or even acknowledges it, and still it's there as a core change in his personality. Other characters are similarly realistic, not divulging their every secret the moment you meet them, or even after they become companions. The creator Yoko Taro obviously did write each character with their own unique personalities, stories, and driving forces, but it feels like they are acting within the world because that's where they belong, rather than where the player character happens to be. It could be the benefit of a show don't tell approach, but even then what and how much is shown is at the perfect level to keep the characters engaging without tipping the writer's hand, and that's an experience seldom seen in such an interactive medium.
When it comes to gameplay the controls are simply, but responsive, with a decent weapon selection to choose from that have their own strengths and weaknesses. The magic system feels less effective with some spells being clearly more effective than others, and even fewer being worth using for damage over utility. Difficulty has the classic failing of simply giving things larger health pools and more damage, and because the gameplay is fairly skill based this makes combat more of a battle of attrition rather than a fun experience on the higher difficulty, Even still, bosses have unique mechanics with multiple approaches depending on preference and playstyle.
In closing I would say the game is by no means hard, but there is a semblance of challenge to be had and even more than that the characters and story are so engaging that they alone have probably pushed Replicant into being one of my favorite games of all time.

Before playing Nier: Automata, I wanted to check out what the first part was all about. That’s why I ended up putting off the playthrough for ten whole years.
In the end, I got all the achievements in Nier: Replicant, and I’ve got to say - it’s definitely one of the best games I’ve ever played and one of the best stories I’ve ever seen, period. This is absolutely a game I can and will recommend to others.
Well, now, in 2025, it’s finally time to give Automata a try…

Before you question my negative review I 100% this game once on console, and again on Steam. I've completed Nier Automata 100% several times. Both of these titles have stellar ost and voice cast, and with that said here are reasons why you should avoid this game, for newcomers that have experienced automata or haven't, and for trophy hunters.
Repetitive Structure: You’re required to replay the game five times to see all endings, with the second half of the game being recycled each time. Only minor dialogue changes and cutscenes are added there’s no real gameplay variation or narrative evolution like Automata had.
Repetitive Combat: The combat system lacks depth, and by the time you're into your second playthrough you will feel bored and fatigued. No new mechanics, no real skill curve just repeated slashing through the same enemies. Don't bother playing on hard mode, it doesn't increase rare item drop chances it just increases the enemy HP by an unreasonable amount.
Excessive Grinding: To 100% the game, you need to upgrade all 33 weapons, which involves farming rare materials with RNG heavy drop rates. Expect 5 to 25 hours just for this part alone, especially in the junk heap. Just use a cheat engine script don't even bother.
Fetch Quests: The side quests are mostly useless that often send you across the map without fast travel (until very late in the game). They don't add much to the story and you're forced to complete 30 for the 100%
Lore Relevance Is Minimal: If you're playing Replicant for lore that connects to Automata, you'll be disappointed. Aside from Emil and Devola & Popola, most characters don't exist. They are erased from the narrative, making this game feel disconnected from the sequel’s emotional and philosophical weight.
TL;DR: Great music and voice acting, but repetitive gameplay, excessive grinding, and weak lore connections make 100% completion more of a chore than a reward specially for Automata fans or achievement hunters.

Man, I thought Nier: Automata sad...
Replicant definitely shows its age particularly in the side quests, as they're mostly nonsense fetch quests that unfortunately compromise the experience. The combat isn't nearly as engaging as Automata's, but it's serviceable. The soundtrack on the other hand is incredible, somehow beating out even Automata in this regard, in my opinion. The story hits like a truck, but the way it is told is very flawed and was a source of frustration for me. They definitely did the whole dripfeeding the player more information over subsequent "routes" better in Automata. Even still I found Replicant's story to be more impactful and it's a shame the game doesn't get more recognition. While on the whole I enjoyed Automata more, I think Replicant will stay in my mind for longer.
So anyway, Nier Replicant is a solid 7.5 out of Outer Wilds.

It's hard for me to recommend this. On one hand this game has a phenomenal soundtrack and voice acting. Liam O'Brien and especially Yuri Lowenthal's voice work is outstanding and you can tell the cast had a ton of fun while conveying all kinds of emotions for each of their characters sometimes making me laugh. The story is also profound, with route B being a highlight to play through. Just about everything outside the gameplay is solid which tells me that Platinum had way more to do with Automata's success because my god this game was a chore to play through if you plan to go for all of the endings. Beyond Ending B not a whole lot changes, and you'll find yourself replaying through the same moments again and again only to find about 15 more minutes of extra story. Which wouldn't be that big of a deal if it didn't take 5 to 10 minutes to backtrack everywhere again and again. Not to mention repeating some mundane dungeon puzzles as well. While Automata also had multiple lettered routes those at least felt entirely different from one another and overall does a better job than what Drakengard and Replicant pioneered. If you want to experience route E you are going to have to repeat a lot of the game more than once in order to reach that point which by then it might not feel worth it to some. I honestly wished I had put the 45 hours into something else. Anyone who loves Yoko Taro's games already know that they suck and are super repetitive but we're still gonna play them anyways. I unfortunately have to give it a thumbs down because unless you're a die hard fan or a masochist you're better off spending the 24 bucks on a nice meal or a bottle and putting a lets play of the game on in the background because its story and voice acting are what carry this further than it's gameplay.

While not perfect, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… manages to address the biggest flaw from the original game, which is its gameplay. After being fine-tuned and modeled after NieR: Automata’s combat, NieR Replicant feels absolutely fantastic to play. Fans of the original will also appreciate the new perspective that the teenage protagonist brings to the table. This game is the perfect entry point for newcomers and the definitive way for veterans to relive a truly iconic game.
Beautiful plot but mechanically tiring, in other words, a cult classic [Eng and Pt-br review]
I would definitely recommend playing this game before Nier Automata. Because Nier Replicant does a lot of things that Automata does better, which makes perfect sense since Automata is a later game. Replicant has a cool plot and good music, but the plot is very easy to get. Sure, some parts of the plot are very good and even better than in Automata, but overall, the plot here is simpler. I would say that the plot and the protagonists are better in Replicant, but the world and NPCs in Automata have a better plot.
And speaking of the world, here's a problem with Replicant: it's a bit lacking in charisma and the large number of side-quests doesn't help much. Of course, you never need to do all the quests, because there isn't even an achievement for that, I think there is only one for half of the quests completed. But, many quests are complete quests with no value at all, the NPCs, in general, are empty, only 3-4 quests are really worth it. And, you need to finish the game 3 times to get all the endings, I even understand that the way to load the game at any chapter like in Automata is not even necessary, because Replicant is shorter and replaying makes sense because in each playthrough things change here and there throughout the game, but really, the third playthrough is completely unnecessary, it could easily be condensed to just two.
Replaying the same game 3 times when Nier's gameplay is not the most exciting thing is a bit tiring, I must not deny, personally I prefer Automata's gameplay with the chips and such, Replicant depends a lot on the randomness of finding the words and, honestly, they don't change the game as much as the chips do in Automata. And, even the gameplay in Automata is an simple button mash with no excitement, but at least it has some more interesting twists, but that's ok, don't get me wrong! I believe that most people play Nier for the plot and this one is very good.
Speaking of plot, this Replicant remaster has an extra special ending. I'll comment without spoilers, but I'll tag it, so read it if want.
You need to finish the game 3 times to unlock the extra ending. The fourth ending is quite fast-paced and focused more on gameplay, which is a shame because the gameplay is a little different. In the end, you decide if it's worth unlocking the extra ending. It only lasts about half an hour, but it's pretty cool even if it's a copy of Automata.
In the end, Replicant is a cool game, with mechanics that are a little tiresome for today's times and twists that are easier to notice than in Automata. It's not the best action game, but everyone plays this game for the plot and it's still very much worth it.

I just like the Drakengard references.
On a serious note, the music is stellar and the story is quite the tear jerker. Combat can be fun, but traversal is kinda the low point of the game.

A beautiful re-imagining of NieR Replicant, with added quests and content, remixed music, and new story beats making it a memorable experience for people who played the OG and new players alike.
Oh, and it's still just as gut-wrenching as the original Replicant/Gestalt. Because Yoko Taro.
(Devola and Popola did nothing wrong!!)

This game is the proof that videogames can be art. Alongside Automata, this is my favorite game of all time. Yoko Taro is a genius. Keiichi Okabe, and the whole MONACA are the ones that make your ears bleed in ecstasy. This game is once in a lifetime experience that you don't forget. Well, to show one's love, time to platinum it!

Overall I would give this game an 9/10, Only because I had to install a program known as SpecialK to make it work properly on my pc. The story is very compelling and deep, I got all possible endings with the help of a mod of course. I dont think I could have played all endings without use of a mod because some parts of this game can be very tedious and extremely repetitive which can get boring. So to avoid burnout I downloaded a mod called ReplicantHook_Siyan off of Nexus to help minimize the grind. Besides that the combat and story was an amazing experience.

Game starts off a bit slow, but eventually transitions into an amazing story that will for sure get any player hooked with its roller coaster of emotions and multiple endings. Once you finish the first ending you'll be hungry for more, and by the time you achieve ending E that hunger will be more than satiated. Also, the games soundtrack was utilized perfectly with almost every part of the story, and I almost never got tired of hearing it in all my hours of playing the game. It works so well with the unique and intriguing mode of storytelling present in the game.
The biggest complaint that I have seen from most people is the gameplay. To be honest, the side missions can get a little repetitive and tedious at times, but that's why they are optional. Besides that, I think the combat was very well done, and the bosses require a more strategic approach. Instead of simple attack and evade you have to learn how to incorporate the spells that you acquire throughout the game. The bosses and enemies in general feel like they fit perfectly within the world and story that players are exposed to throughout their playthrough. I've heard a lot about this game, and it for sure lived up to the hype. Furthermore ending E had me stunned, and is absolutely worth the consecutive playthroughs to achieve.

A fantastic way to properly experience this absolute banger. The Soundtrack rules, the story is amazing and it looks great. The updated combat falls a bit flat against the underwhelming enemies, but it carries you through the game very well.

Ever wanted to feel depressed yet somehow enthralled? Do you like foul-mouthed women with a troubled past and an intersex disorder? Do you want to play as a white-haired femboy who is really avoidant and angry but loves his friends? DO YOU LIKE GAY SKELETONS?
Cool. Try NieR RepliCant, you'll enjoy it.

Finally started the series in 2025, Great game still, only thing for me which is a negative so far is the back and forth for quest does get a bit annoying since no fast travel till later in the game. Loved the main story kinda iffy on the multiple endings that require me playing the same parts again but slowly working my way through ending B. Wish it was more to it rather than some small cut scenes that add more context to the bosses you beat already. Still overall really enjoyable.

Certainly not a "normie game", but if you can move past its shennanigans like the outdated fetchquest design (luckily you can skip ALMOST all of them without missing anything important, still I'd check a guide or something) or the fact that you have to make multiple (partial) replays to get the whole picture/true ending and such, I really think this game worth it in the end. It totally did for me.

Replicant is by no means a perfect game its mainly held back by its somewhat outdated game design and many fetch quests. This is especially true with the beginning of the game and why most negative reviews have under 4 hours playtime. That being said the game gets better and better the more you play. The best part is definitely its story and characters supported by a amazing soundtrack that really makes it a memorable experience. Unfortunately though you will have to play at least 5 playthroughs to get the full story. The game will change each time to give you new added content and new perspectives to the story. Its a cool mechanic but you are still experiencing alot of the same content and it can start to get pretty repetitive. In my opinion it does not add enough content to justify 5 playthroughs/
endings and could have been condensed into 3 but even still this is a game I think most people should experience atleast once and i'm definitely looking forward to playing Automata in the future. Also it runs great on the deck!

The game is overall good, but it has many topics, that is not told or just mentioned and many players won't understand it without other episodes of the game series. I usually like to rate individually, so I will do it here as well regardless of the series knowledge, that I have.
-Story: 6/10 - The story in itself is enjoyable, but has many holes and many things that the player might want to know, but won't get any answers or clues, which makes it a bit worse, than what it should be. Usually I deem this as a writer problem and an unthoughtful storytelling, which the writer tries to fill up in later "episodes". Beside that the base story is kind of basic, so I cannot give a high rate for it. Also... delete the black screens white text bulls...t, because it was very bad in a game like this...
-Endings: 5/10 - Ending A is good in itself, nothing serious as I mentioned above, but it's a good one. Ending B is a joke, since for Ending C+D we need to repeate it completely, which makes it boring and unenjoyable. In my perspective, they should have included B into the A scenario and C/D as well, so we would have the C/D ending by default and E as an extra, which would made the gameplay shorter and more enjoyable by a lot.
-Combat: 6/10 - The game has a niche combat with 1-1 combo, but nothing serious, nothing to delve into in reality and uses a lock on system, where the auto target sometimes working too well (what makes it sometimes bad) and sometimes, when I would count on it, it works like s...t with very rigid moves.
-Graphics: 7/10 - The graphics is really nice compared what it could have been looked like in the time of the original, but this is already an updated version compared to it, which doesn't made it that much better, but at least it's enjoyable like this for sure.
-Music: 10/10 - There are only a few ones, but those are extremely high quality and the player just doesn't gets bored through the playthroughs.
-Overall: 7/10 - The game is not bad, it's pretty enjoyable, but it has its faults, which could have been much better. If someone wants to delve into the game, I can recommend it, but with a mind of that, this is an old game with its problems that was mentioned above and do not have too high hopes for it.

I mean its nier The story is amazing. Gameplay can be a bit monotonous especially crossing the northern plains 50 times to upgrade weapons. Performance wise its great unless using a controller then it becomes a stuttering mess. Every forum I read says to disable steam input or use special k but none of that worked for me instead using the official nier steam input layout performance has been great even with a controller.

After 21 hours, just started the second half. Sorry to say this game is extremely disappointing. Not enjoying it at all. The Point of View shifts in combat to side scrolling and top down views at critical moments make the game so frustrating. No fast travel....wtf? I'm forcing myself to finish. But, it looks like more of the same. We'll see how long I can tough it out. To be fair I'd like to finish and see how it ends.

Gameplay is bleak and outdated. Feels like playing Devil May Cry 2 but it's 2025 so... (In fact it is basically that, being an action game from 2010 for the PS2... only difference is better graphics and one extra ending which should've been in the original game, definitely not worth the price tag)

"Why is that woman only wearing underwear?" Kid, its a JRPG.
In Nier: Replicant, you play a porcelain doll of a boy with negative fashion sense who finds Grimoire Wiess and must use it to save his equally porcelain doll of a sister who has been cursed by Grimoire Noir. If you noticed that the good white book is German while the bad black book is French, you aren't alone.
Let's actually focus on the good... the music is fantastic, and the concept of a game with multiple endings and perspectives is solid. That gives you a reason to replay even as many other aspects give you reasons to turn away. The voice acting is also great; though, the material they have to work with feels like something a high schooler might journal.
Where concept of the story is good, the telling of it is just bad. Foreshadowing is limited to a prelude that practically gives everything away and a throwaway line about how someone doesn't seem to age. Where this makes an inevitable heel turn unsurprising, it is entirely discordant with everything else those characters have done, so that event feels worse than flat; it feels out of place.
Story can thrive or limp on the strength of its characters. Unfortunately, those here are largely unlikable. You don't have a clue who or what your main character is when you are asked to name them. Spoiler, its a whiny boy. In part 2 you get a sense for how old your character originally was, as 5 years have passed and his voice finally dropped, which means he went through puberty in there somewhere. Notably, where your toon has changed over 5 years, no one could be bothered to use a broom to clean up the library you wrecked. He's got a sister, who is the raison d'etre for your character and the game's story. She is entirely useless. There's the foul mouthed underwear model that was probably some writer's wet dream. Rounding out your party is a kid that thinks he's Medusa until he transformed into a flying paperweight.
Part of the problem with the story is that it is very short. More than half of your hours played won't be the main story. You will instead be doing side quests, or at least attempting to, as there are several moments when you are attempting to do a side quest only to discover that you cannot go a place or talk to a person because of something with the main quest. These side quests are some of the worst kind you'll face. No, I don't mean escort quests; there's only one of those. They are all either fetch quests or require farming. Given the game lacks any real fast travel, you wind up having to run through the same ten or so maps and their loading screens over and over and over again. Few things make you want to drop a game like that sort of crap.
If running through the same maps isn't bad enough, the lack of gameplay variety may be. Outside of bosses and minibosses, there's really only about 10 enemy types. Where you have a variety of weapons and spells available, realistically, you'll settle on one weapon, the basic pew pew spell, and then either KD spell or shield spell. Your attack pattern will become inanely repetitive. When you get to bosses, things aren't any better. For every boss, you'll either charge its face to murder it with your sword or you'll hang at long range and pew pew. Despite the monotony of these foes and the eyerollingly named Shadowlord, the true enemy in this game, the one you will struggle against more than any, is the camera, which is sometimes controllable and oft times ripped from you to limit your perspective.
Don't worry, the gameplay gets worse. Once you get to the forest for your quest, gameplay becomes "read walls of text and then answer a question." Walls of text appear elsewhere as well - rather than providing a cutscene or otherwise showing you events, it tries to Zork you without being nearly as good as that venerable title. Where you might hope that choices given throughout the game let's you choose the course of the story, it doesn't even give you the veneer of agency, as the "wrong" choice just loops back to the choice again (sometimes after another wall of text). No matter how much I wanted to select, "Do nothing and be annihilated," it just wouldn't let me go.
If you loved Nier: Automata, which shared some of these same flaws, and are looking to play its predecessor. Do yourself a favor and instead just cherish your memory of that game instead.

Okay. This game has some good sides. Starts well, but a lot of quests are... a chore. I feel like I am playing a single-player mmo. And that's bad. Oh, and also someone told me that to get a good ending I have to beat this 30h game a couple of times? Like what, you want me to grind a single player game? Is it designed just to prolong the gameplay by frustrating players and making them do fetch quests? Please. Don't ever recommend games like these. I heard that the story is good. I love a good, story driven games, but the game itself cannot stand in the way of the story. It should, at the very least do no harm. And this game tries to hurt players in more ways than just wasting their time.

I came here after playing Nier Automata and was totally disappointed. This game is supposed to be a 2021 remaster of a 2010 game. 2010 was the year when, for example, Mass Effect 2 came out. So, we are not talking about video game stoneage here. Nier Replicant, however, looks like a 2001 remake of an early 1990s adventure game where you run from one loading-screen to the next to fulfill the most generic fetch quests you can imagine. There is supposed to be a deeper story somewhere down the line, but after running around for four hours (of which at least two were spent on loading screens) as a teenage boy who looks like a girl (why does the game feature seven control schemes for one-hand playing, BTW?) hunting sheep and collecting herbs for my terminally ill sister I gave up waiting for a story to start.

Solid game, can be a bit slow and grindy but if you're a Nier fan with extra time check it out
Soundtrack is epic, love Song of the Ancients
Lore is really interesting but game doesn't tell you that much about it

A wonderful story with lots of content and plenty of replay value. I like what they did with the combat by adding many forms of magic to the normal hack and slash gameplay. Don't pass this one up.
