2025 Review: This game is a severely underrated. It's been sitting in my library for a more than 7 years now and I finally got around to playing it and ended up doing a 100% run. It does not try to innovate needlessly; everything you see and do, you've probably seen and done in other games, but it combines these things so nicely. Think Arkham's crisp hand to hand combat, Just Cause's satisfying explosions, brilliant vehicular combat, and a really unique open world all put together neatly. The gameplay loop is fairly repetitive. 25% into the game you've already done most of what you'll continue to do for the rest of the game. But somehow, it manages to stay fun all the way to the end. To the point where it's left me wanting MORE of the same even after I spent 80 hours in two weeks 100%-ing it. The pacing is actually pretty decent. You don't feel like you need to rush to the next mission (until the final Act 04, where things ramp up). This leaves you with a lot of time to explore the map, takeover enemy camps, go collectable hunting, blow shit up and just generally have a good time. I love it, it has carved out a nice little corner close to my heart. And lastly, the graphics and effects hold up very well and have aged like fine wine. Seriously, it still has some of the best explosions I have seen in a video game. Very well deserved 8.5/10 Go play it.

An underrated open world gem, game came out in 2015 and doesn't lose to new releases, this happens when developers have passion and actually want to make a fun game.

An underrated game that should have gotten more love when it was released. The story is decent but it's not gonna be the main reason you play this game. The parts the game does great is the melee and car combat. The melee is fun and satisfying, especially with the crunchy, powerful noises your blows deliver, feels and sounds like your shattering bones. For cars you can ram them, blow them up, or rip of theirs tires with a harpoon. Destroying cars is a great pastime when driving through the wasteland. In addition, your car, the magnum opus, can be modified in various ways to increase its power or it's appearance.

I can't believe it looks better than some tripple and double A games that come out now (2025). It's one of those open world games that has you repeating the same thing over and over again, except it's just fun to do. It's rare that I look forward to going through the checklist. Why I think it's fun is because it has no needless tacked on gimmicks. No convoluted RPG system, no tedious quests, no mindless grinding. The core of the game is satisfying and the game just gives you an open world for that. In fact, beating the game is not the point, because then it's just over, there is actually nothing to do (no endgame). It's just going through liberating each area that makes the game, so just take your time and just drive around.

I was absolutely loving this game until about 15-20 hours in I got a game breaking glitch that stopped my progression and I don't feel like redoing it. 10 years and they never put out a fix or even addressed it with a guide on how to fix it, there is no fix as far as I can tell. So annoyed rn.

This is how to make a good open world game. Very good adaption of the mad max character. The car combat and and customizations are good, the world is crafted very beatifully, the game looks and sounds very good. I played many open world games but this is one of the very few where i realy had the urge to discovery every hidden memo or secret and even after i unlocked EVERY memo i still was able to find new locations outside of the marked map. One small note: if you want to complete all achievements: "Up to the task" can not be obtained by plaing as it is tied to some online functionality that WarnerBros has shut down. You can get it by downloading some save files tho

Super underrated game. Still holds up today being ten years old. Simple, fun combat similar to Batman Arkham games. Great driving physics, feels heavy like a proper car. 100% recommend.

I played this game back in 2016 and instantly decided it was my favorite of all time but didn't replay it till recently since the ending was so perfect and I was afraid it might've become dated. It's got the occasional game-breaking bug, but man is it still fun to play and immersive. I just warn to have multiple saves if you're a completionist; a certain annoying bug stopped me from 100% completion and I couldn't load back... The gameplay is a mix between the Arkham games, Farcry, and an atmospheric driver of its own design. The progression systems for Max and his car are very satisfying. I didn't expect much plot from a movie game but its themes go hard and the voice acting is hauntingly good. I only wish they better incorporated the landmine side quests, what a slog...

One of the best open world post apocalyptic survival games. It puts modern day games to shame in comparison. At the very least 8.5/10 it could have been a 9/10 cuz ofc no game is perfect but there were some tiny little stuff that could have been worked on, other than that this game is a Magnum Opus

This was one of the most exciting addictive and just straight up fun action adventures I've ever played. I highly recommend this one, the graphics are beautiful, the combat is visceral, the Mad-maxiness of it all is just spot on perfect. It is satisfying. Best way to enjoy post apocalyptic wasteland, next to Fallout, but in some ways it's even more fun. The cars are just so coool! You have to try this.

Now, after 50 hours of gameplay, I can give my opinion on it! I just finished the game for the first time in 2025 with only a few scrap zones left and I still think it's a very good game, considering it's a game that's already a few years old. Honestly, it's one of the games I enjoyed finishing the most.

Still an underrated gem, even a decade later. Hard to believe this game is from 2015, Mad Max still holds up visually in a big way. The wasteland looks absolutely stunning, from brutal dust storms to sunsets over rusted ruins. The lighting, the weather effects, the grit, it all sells the atmosphere so well. The upgrade systems are super satisfying, both for Max and the Magnum Opus. Every new armor piece, engine boost, or weapon mod feels like it matters. You feel the progress, and it all feeds into the gameplay loop perfectly. Combat is punchy and impactful, with real weight behind every hit. The timing-based brawling is super rewarding once you get in the rhythm, and chaining brutal takedowns just never gets old. And the driving? Absolutely awesome. Car combat feels chaotic and cinematic in the best way, ramming, harpooning, blowing enemies off the road, it all just clicks. If you missed this when it came out or just never gave it a shot, now’s a great time. It’s aged like fine scrap metal.

Mad Max (2015) is a third-person, open world, action game developed by Avalanche Studios (of Just Cause fame) and published by Warnes Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Taking place in the Mad Max universe, you are set in the role of the titular, Max Rockatansky, as he fights his way through the desolate post-apocalyptic wasteland. This review will cover the ~38 hours needed to complete most of the game’s content including side quests and races. TL; DR – A faithful interpretation of the Mad Max universe in videogame form that starts strong but fizzles off unexcitingly in the second half. Story (2/5) – Mad Max’s story starts off strong with Max’s signature ride, The Interceptor, and his gear being stolen. Max then fights his way back up to retrieve what’s his and making uneasy alliances along the way. However, the story soon becomes repetitive and unengaging with questionable agendas/motivations that isn’t helped by boring boss fights. Gameplay (3/5) – Mad Max adopts the free-flow combat system first seen in the Batman Arkham series of games which is fun initially but does not cope well with the game’s means of increasing the difficulty – just throwing more bodies at you. Moreover, this system does not translate well to the boss fights. Upgrades can be made to both Max and his ride which help to make your exploration of the vast, desolate open world easier. Controls (4/5) – The default controls on mouse and keyboard work well even when driving is involved. Key rebinding and mouse sensitivity adjustments help to dial the controls in a little better, and I highly recommend doing it for mouse controls. Annoyingly, the game does nothing to tell you that Left-Ctrl functions as a slight hop which can otherwise lock you out of several puzzles without knowing the function. Graphics (5/5) – Mad Max looks stunning for a 10-year-old game with stunning vistas of the wasteland desert. Object density, lighting and dust particle effects are a standout even by today’s standards. The only thing that would give away the age are the lower resolution textures and motion capture of human characters. Audio (3/5) – Environmental audio in the Mad Max is good with meaty punches, loud gunshots and good positional audio. The voice acting is average, and score isn’t particularly memorable. What’s annoying is the drone of the car’s exhaust which get tiring after >10 hours of playthrough with no option to reduce engine/exhaust volume in the audio settings. Optimisation/Bugs – Performance is good and there are no compatibility issues with more modern hardware. Some issues may exist with 4K scaling and muted audio upon initial launch, though those are one-time fixes that needn’t be revisited after. In my entire playthrough, I encountered 5 or so hard crashes. Overall (3.4/5) – From the world to its character and vehicles, Mad Max (2015) is a very faithful adaptation of the Mad Max universe. With plenty to do an explore, the game’s first 15 hours are a blast as you make your way through the wasteland fighting on foot and in vehicle. Unfortunately, a weak main campaign and repetitive missions make the second half of the game a bit of chore to play. Nevertheless, there’s a lot of heart in this one and you can tell the developers truly cared for this game. Recommended especially if you’re fresh off the heels of a Mad Max movie marathon.

This game is really good. Gameplay and exploration is fun. Environments feel very Mad Max. There's a whole lot of stuff to do in the game, and everything about the Magnum Opus is cool. The story is fun to go through, and the combat feels satisfying every time it happens. A very strong recommendation.

Considering that I am not a big fan of driving games, but am a fan of Mad Max series, I loved this game. Sure, it has flaws, mainly in on-foot gameplay segments, enemies sometimes get stuck in objects and there is not a lot enemy variety, hell even every boss in the game is basically the same. I must admit that on-foot combat is punchy (no pun intended), fast and responsive, but that is not the focus of the game. What you will be spending most of the time doing is driving, and they did it damn right. Your music will be the engine revving across the wasteland, metal twisting under the force of impact, explosions echoing around you and screams of your enemies under searing flames. I enjoyed every second of it and would highly recommend you try it.

Max Max has been out for a decade now, the movies for several decades. The developers for sure did justice to the game. Max is constantly conflicted with helping others and running away. But to run away, he has no choice but to help. Max can't truly run away until he gets his revenge. Even then, the best he can hope for is to move on with his life. Cars, weapons, combat, creepy moments with creepy music and lets not forget the overall post-apocalyptic theme. If you enjoyed the Mad Max movies, give the game a try. With an old school Twisted Metal and GTA match-up feel, you can't go wrong with Mad Max!

Underrated game. Only thing that spoils it is the rubberbanding on the barrel races. Spoils the experience so avoid them. Other than that, if you are a fax of Mad Max, this really scratches the itch.

Reminds me of shadow of mordor type of combat, just slightly different to fit the narrative. It feels good there is a good progression where u feel stronger with lvling up ur skills and ur items. But it gets repetitive real fast. It becomes a choir to lvl up further skills and gear. But enjoyed it nevertheless. Try it out see for yourself if you enjoy this kind of RPG or not

Although I haven't played through the entire game, I'm loving the systems, the ease of upgrading the character, finding loot, running into enemies, all of the driving (including the races), the ability to easily fast travel if desired, the survival elements, the general story, and the entire environment. This game does all of the action RPG elements correctly and isn't a grind, but just straight up fun.

This reminds me so much of the Days Gone game. Cars are better tho Giant wasteland, a little bit too much id say. Jewbisoft style map, checkpoints, collectibles every 50m. Not many firearms which i like, alot of fist fights. Button mashing fights but entertaining. Car chases, spikes, hook gun, bazooka. At first the controls of the car are cluncky but when you upgrade your car it gets better. Alot of stuff to do. The story i dont follow or care honestly, but chumbucket is cool. 7/10

Welcome to the wasteland, where the only law is “smash first, ask questions later.” Mad Max nails that post-apocalyptic vibe with brutal car combat, jaw-dropping landscapes, and enough scrap metal to build a small army. Driving feels weighty and satisfying, every chase is a mix of precision and pure chaos. Upgrading your car is addictive, turning your rusty heap into a death machine on wheels. The story’s a bit rough around the edges, but who cares when you’re busy blowing up War Boys and tearing through sand dunes? If you want a game where survival means being loud, fast, and absolutely relentless, Mad Max delivers. 10/10. Would ride into the dust storm again.

Mad Max is a one-of-a-kind game. While it draws inspiration from the movie, it wisely creates its own story, which I thought was a great choice. The main highlight is its melee combat system, featuring serious punching, timely parrying, and counter-attacking. The game revolves around building the ultimate car, "The Magnum Opus," from scraps to compete in death races for big prizes. You're accompanied by Chumbucket, an excellent mechanic but a cowardly and self-loathing hunchback who mends your car on demand. The game offers enough customization for both your gear and the car to keep you engaged. The world of Mad Max is a barren, sand-covered wasteland, frequently hit by storms and gusty winds. Despite its lifeless appearance, constantly roaming bandits and enemies provide consistent combat, even following set routes for transport. The map is divided into territories controlled by various "big names," and your objective is to clear bandit threats from these areas, which benefits you in several ways. There are also quite a few side missions that unlock exclusive content. I managed to clear the very first territory completely, making it 100% bandit-free. You can also upgrade the bases in these territories, providing refilled ammo, water, and more upon each visit. Scrap plays a huge role and collecting it is a significant grind. The game features hundreds of scrap collections and base-clearing activities, which can keep you engaged. However, doing the same thing repeatedly just for scrap or to lower the threat level becomes monotonous and cumbersome. I found the most efficient approach was to fully upgrade one base and fast travel to it for refills, then fast travel to my next destination, rather than clearing every single base and activity. While I enjoy grinding, this game demands an almost endless amount of it, which wasn't for me. The story is pretty interesting, and the missions play out nicely, giving them a sense of meaning. The graphics are good; not the best, but they definitely capture the wasteland vibe, suiting the game perfectly. Overall, Mad Max is definitely a game to play. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for good melee combat and death races, though I can't say much for the grind, as it's not for everyone.

To bad this gem didn't get enough sales for Warner Bro's. I could only imagine a co-op feature and DLC's with a bigger world. Game is a solid 11/10 for me. But I'm a Mad Max nerd (original movies, not the new garbage which is ironic since this game was made for the new).

Love this game! I am a fan of the Mad Max Universe. The game although not perfect but it is very well done. I didn't finish the game but came back to play again many years later. I can't stop playing again, super addicting. It's an old game but at 2025 still holding up replay ability. For the price highly recommend to add the game to the collection, or wait for sale. :)
