A Mediocre Fictional Roman Revenge Drama: More of an Interactive Movie Than an Action Game

7/10

Opening
Rome civilization, the pinnacle of classical antiquity, is known to everyone for its splendor and has long been a favorite subject of various artistic creations. Within the gaming industry, works with this background, such as Total War: Rome, Expeditions: Rome, Imperator: Rome, etc., although each has its highlights, are all mainly based on management and strategy. Action genre Rome games are almost absent from the market.
Ryse: Son of Rome, which was first released on Xbox 360 in 2013 and landed on PC the following year, is a rare AAA action title set in Rome. Its developer Crytek is famous for the hardware killer- Crysis series, the excellent visual effects in the trailer of Ryse: Son of Rome also make this work highly anticipated by players back then. Unfortunately, the extreme lack of depth and repetitive combat system, the imaginary and slightly incomprehensible plot, and the short linear campaign process make Rise: Son of Rome a mediocre work despite its relatively outstanding graphics.
Strength
Although it is no longer considered top-notch, the graphics of Rise: Son of Rome are still not outdated, and it still could present players with a unique Roman-era adventure. By playing the role of a fictional character, Marius Titus, players can not only fight on the front line like a centurion but also command legions as well. This game does a good job of creating a battlefield atmosphere and immersive gaming experience, the combat system is also notably easy to get started, and the defense and dodge judgments are very lenient. By reducing the enemy's health, players can perform execution consisting of QTE(Quick Time Event) checks. There is a wide range of execution animations full of brutal yet pure violent aesthetic art to enjoy. The campaign story draws upon Roman history before and after the Nero era. It is an entirely fictional revenge epic, and if you are familiar with Roman history, many dramatic plot arrangements in this game will make you applaud.
Weakness
The combat design of Rise: Son of Rome can only be described as a disaster. Instead of saying it is an action game, it would be more appropriate to say it is an interactive movie with certain action content. The extremely singular attack action module makes the combat of this game have no depth at all. The upgrade is also more focused on improving numerical values and experience acquisition and does not bring a diverse gaming experience in any way. Ranged weapons such as javelins and crossbows are also forced to aim automatically, with no sense of operation to any extent. The player must use perfect parrying to break through the BOSS's defense, the turn-based combat is incredibly dull. The forced locked-on camera also makes it difficult to change positions and cameras when facing multiple enemies, which brings a very torturous operating experience. Gladiator mode, which serves as the multiplayer of Ryse: Son of Rome is a PVE arena that supports up to two players, and it requires players to constantly grind to obtain high-tier equipment with enhanced attributes, but with such a lack of depth in the combat system, it becomes repetitive and boring.
The campaign of this game is entirely linear and the process is extremely short. Players who do not pursue collectibles in the game will complete the walkthrough quickly. Gaius Marius, Nero Claudius, Commodus Antoninus, Boudica, and other characters are all placed in the same era in Ryse: Son of Rome. The ancient Greek anecdote of Damocles has also been romanized, though there are many dramatic arrangements and historical easter eggs, players who do not know Roman history will only be confused. The game's plot slightly emphasizes personal heroism, it begins with promise but ends poorly. Many twists are very abrupt and lack foreshadowing, leaving players puzzled and giving a disappointing viewing experience. The fluctuating volume of the character's dialogues also has a particular impact on the plot.
Conclusion
As an action game, Rise: Son of Rome utterly lacks depth and diversity regarding combat. The playability of it is extremely low, and the design of the multiplayer mode itself is unremarkable as well. However, the sales of this work are unexpectedly good, and if you look at it from the perspective of an interactive movie with certain combat elements, Ryse: Son of Rome as a whole will give you a second-rate special effects movie-like game feeling; players only need to focus on fighting and moving and enjoy the plot with excellent immersive atmosphere, excellent execution action design and performance effects. The extremely short process can end before the poor combat makes the player feel bored too. For interested players, I would only recommend experiencing the campaign of Ryse: Son of Rome once, this is enough to represent almost all the content of the game.

A game that, unfortunately, has largely faded into obscurity. For anyone even remotely interested in the Roman Empire, this offers a few hours of top-notch entertainment.

"Ryse is an exceptional hack and slash game that really stands the test of time. Made on Crytek's own engine this game still looks great a decade later. If you like romans, action and QTEs play this."
Good not great
This game is very good but not great. I can easily compare it to games like Shadow of Mordor and Batman Arkham Asylum but unlike those games it both isn't as long and doesn't have as many unique elements. But like those games it has very satisfying combat, a story worth seeing through to the end and finishers at the end of combo attacks. Also like both of those games, this game is good looking.
Hack and slack with so many finishers
This game is a fairly basic hack and slash game with dodging and parrying. Almost everything else adding to this game beyond this is a bit of fluff but the fighting system is still interesting. It definitely isn't hard but it is satisfying. The finishers range from everything including: based on how many people you are finishing at once, forward facing, situational based, from behind, environmental and so on. And there aren't just one or two from each category. They also added a unique mechanic that you decide upon your finisher what it builds. Examples include: giving health, XP to unlock things, focus, etc. The focus attack is like many other action games you might have played which unleashes the ability to slow down time to give you the advantage against multiple opponents.
Graphics, sound and story
Across the board they are interesting and well done. The graphics hold up superbly, even over a decade later. The sounds, music and voices are all exceptional. The story isn't super unique but it is also good and you can tell obviously this was made to be contender or at the very least as tribute to God of War on PS3. The story is fairly short but it is enjoyable and I have beaten it at least 4 times across several gaming systems and accounts.
Bugs, glitches, crashes
I'm running this on Windows 11 and I did have one issue. I had an issue where the game itself on cutscenes would go black. I could hit spacebar and it would resume. I updated my drivers on my 3080 and it didn't fix it. I didn't previously have this issue on Windows 10. I do have an entirely new pc so take this for what you will since it could just be my setup. Also, while annoying, I still wanted to continue even having beaten this game in the past.
Multiplayer & the gladiator mode
I didn't try this again, I don't even know if it still works. But last time I tried it, I was doing it solo and still having a good time. I still want to try this with a friend and eventually if I do, I'll try to update this review. If you want to play that mode co-op, I encourage you reading other reviews or the discussion forums to see if it is still working.
Controller
Worked great. Needed no configuration or setup and didn't have any issues with buttons not displaying correctly or not being mapped right.
Value
For under $10 USD full price this game is great. It often times goes on sale for 75% off. This game is a great, albeit short hack and slash game. You won't find a game with more finishers. If you want to play something like the 300 movie but in game form, this will do it for you.
Closing comments
Crytek has made some exceptional single player games and this is one of them. While they probably will be best known for The Hunt, if you want a good hack and slash game that looks great, look no further. This isn't a soulslike. This doesn't have precise timing and punish you for making mistakes. This game harkens back to the style of old ps3 and xbox 360 days of making you feel like a hack and slash badass without being ultra punishing for mistakes. If you like that style from time to time, I'd encourage you to check this out. I know it will never happen, but I'd love if Crytek would make a sequel one day. I do believe they were on to something special and there was story at the end that they could connect to. Thanks to the Crytek team for making this unique piece of art!

It looks very cool, the visuals are really really good. Especially considering the age of the game.
The story is honestly also not horrible, really quite inventive.
Where the game loses me is the gameplay in general. You're literally walking through one long corridor. The game is as linear as can be and has extremely boring (although graphically cool) combat, only sometimes getting variation in even more boring bouts of a glorified tower defence game. Decided to watch the story on YouTube because I can't get myself to play through this slog myself.

A very good-looking game driven by a somewhat ok story. Sadly it falls on the short side length-wise, but the gameplay is amazing and is very inspired from the one you have in the arkham games. The combat is brutal, gory, with a lot of sanguinary executions.
The co-op gladiator mode is actually fun and can get tough when you're in the latter waves.

Short, action packed vengeance story in the style of Ancient Rome. Beware, this is a historic mash-up, as developers put it. They have taken all they like about Rome and put it in the game.
The game is linear, the gameplay is the same until the end: mix attacks with bashes, occasionally charging both, and evade. Not much variety and the level up system is kind of out of place.
I enjoyed the high quality of the graphics and cinematography though. Got really immersed into the Roman battles. That's why I might consider watching "Troy" some time later. A lot of masculinity, brotherhood and all of that. Feel like a man!
Like. Pity that there will be no sequel. Also, how did I manage to never hear about this game for 10 years?!

One of the most campaign focused games I've ever played. It was pure pleasure. Cool ideas, awesome graphics, beautiful setting and environments. I'd love more games like that!
(Controls can be a bit clumsy, but when they hit, it's pure joy!) Such a beautiful game even by today's standards.
I hope for a sequel

I mean its cool, fight a bunch of barbarians and eventually Romans. If you're looking for historical accuracy this isn't the game. It's more of a game where you just go around killing every enemy you can see. The jiggle physics are a BIG thing in the game (you'll see what I mean). Not a bad way to keep yourself entertained and it's actually kinda fun, not gonna lie.

Just finished campaign on the easiest level in 5 hours or so. And can say, that for me this game is a great window into the world of fighting games - yep, this one was my very first fighting game. And so, everything what people with more experience criticize about it, actually makes it perfect for a noob.
1, Yes, it's short (basically I finished it in two evenings) - and so it's a perfect first experience.
2. Yes, it's linear - and as somebody new to this genre I wanted a "guided introduction".
3. Yes, combat system is simple - for veterans of fighting games, that is.
4. Yes, visuals are amazing - ah, wait a sec, nobody complaints about visuals.
5. Yes, historically inaccurate - but for more historical accuracy I can go back to playing Rome II DEI mode. And like really, who cares about historical accuracy in a fighting game? Is the setting cool? Yep, it is. And I don't really need more.
6. Yes, story is as linear as level design - but somehow I didn't pick up this game for plot twists. I picked up this game to dismember barbarians with bloody finishers. And my goodness me, does this game deliver on this one!..
Summing up: if you are an experienced "virtual fighter", you might be disappointed, but if you just want to casually hack and slash or just try out this genre, then it's really perfect for beginners.

Interesting game, the story made so good and fight mechanics as well. Can say only BOSS fights are same and boring. It could be possible to finish him/her faster, but some why Marius just speaks too much or makes dumb move as push instead of slay, then starts second faze of the fight and the Boss has full HP and Marius doesn't...
Graphics 10/10
Story 8.5/10
Collectables 0/10

Another top 3rd person view game of all time! Despite of the year it was made, the graphic is considered pretty much great to me surprisingly. The story line is just perfect! Brutal finishing moves by a gladiator! Would be the right game when you're having a bad day and thinking to unleash your inner beast! Please do not be hesitate to own this game, believe me you won't regret. Enjoy!

So it's pretty short. Like maybe 6 hours without rushing through it. Combat is satisfying but the movement is clunky. Also the aiming system is trash. Either way I enjoyed it enough.
Would recommend waiting for a sale due to short game length.

Fun short game that utilizes Arkham style combat of essentially; attack, block, guard break. Most other games that use this style of combat have an indicator about the head of the enemy that they are about to attack and you need to block, but this game (at least on hard, which is what I played on) doesn't do that, it just has well telegraphed attacks that you need to recognize. I really appreciate that they decided to do that, it makes the game feel way more immersive and cinematic.
Story wise this game is absolutely bonkers ridiculous. It tries to just have light fantasy elements, but explosions and armies of tens of thousands of people appearing out of nowhere is very jarring in a game about romans and barbarians. Its like someone wanted to make call of duty game, but roman. Complete with D-day invasion of Britain (yes, seriously, explosions included).
Its a good thing the game only took me 10 hours to get through, because while mechanically it is fun, I was getting fed up with the ridiculousness of the story and set pieces really quickly. If the devs had the confidence to make this game more grounded, and the story was wasn't full of cartoonishly evil villains it would be a much better title.
Still, if you pick it up on discount its a fun 10 or so hours.

A game made to be a gallery of what the Xbox One was capable during the launch of the console, but the game is a beauitiful peplum with classic story and nice combat system (a bit redundant) and a short game to play in a weekend (or a day)

It is realy 6\10 and i totally agree with rating on Metacritic
The game has very strange optimization, half the game I played in 60 fps, and at the end for some reason there was a fix at 36.
The story is simple, a typical historical blockbuster. On the plus side is the graphics, considering the year of release it still looks good. Well and at a discount you can take it, just to play something simple and unstressful

7/10 Runs great on the steam deck, it is a short but visually stunning cinematic hack-and-slash. Combat is simple but satisfying, especially if you're in the mood for some brutal Roman-style executions. The story is predictable, but the atmosphere and presentation carry it. Great for a weekend playthrough just don’t expect deep mechanics or replayability.

I am vengeance. I am Damocles!
Surprisingly a good game. It felt like I was in an interactive movie. It was a very good experience and i highly recommend it to anyone that wants a short game. Don't expect to 100% the achievements on this game, from what I've noticed. You need to play online to get the certain achievements. Don't expect a mind changing story, it felt very manly and very obvious portrayal. I had zero to low expectations before playing the game due to old reviews stating that the gameplay becomes repetitive, but my brother convinced me that I should play it. I was happy to get his recommendation and gave me a fun experience.

I had to seek out a steam guide to get this game running on my AMD rig (dont know if this applies to NVIDIA hardware) as the stutters/frame drops at the beginning where unplayable, my GPU was not being utilised, now with using RTSS RivaTuner Statistics Server application my game runs with a night and day difference nearly meeting my refresh rate consistently with no drops (144hz) with very high textures.
Ryse is a decent-ish time whilst thankfully being only 6 hours to beat, because sadly this games combat experience is just way too simple for me and aggressively repetitive it outstays its welcome during the early parts of the campaign all the way to the end, I had to play this game in three intervals to get through it, the visuals and story are not enough to get past the overly-simplistic combat system.
Combos dont exist and the enemy are just fodder that there are of which four types of enemies in the game so variety is extremely weak here. You just spam attack the enemies until the skull execution icon appears on their head which then leads you into a colour pattern QTE over and over and over again for the entire playthrough, these are initially fun to pull off but with there being a very limited amount of executions in the game it gets very samey quick, the turret/shield sections are a bore to get through offering no excitement or challenging parts during them.
The visuals are still great to this day for a game from 2013, the plot is serviceable and does an ok job although it does feature a revenge plot that is very similar to another piece of ancient rome media. The ancient rome time period is the saving grace here, there's not enough games showcasing this interesting part of history enough, but that's not enough to save this game.
Without a sale this game is not worth your time, even then with a sale of £2.79 id only consider if you're interested in Batman Arkham esque combat that's FAR more simple than those games and like the ancient rome time period, dont bother if those two dont apply.

💬 6/10 — Looks like a god-tier epic, plays like a flashy tech demo. Eye candy for Rome lovers.

Pros:
- Nice story
- Nice graphics
- Enemies, there seem to be a variety of enemies besides the normal barbarians like the pyromaniac or the brute so far
Cons:
- Combat is repetitive and boring, haven't unblocked any skill or perks but don't think there's a big difference, if at any point I'm able to change the weapon it would be nice, maybe spear, bow or hammer, so far only sword and shield which limit the combat.
- Way too linear, the progress is literally just one alley to walk forward and sometimes a round area which makes you feel you are walking the same alley over and over
In a nutshell, not a game that catches you and makes you want to play it til late even though you know you work early in the morning but it is entertaining, I'd suggest to get it on sale.

this will always be a great game! this was an incredible title from an era where games were crafted with a goal in mind as opposed to [insert buzzword genre of the week here mashed with 3 other non related buzzword genres to appease our investors]. this game has a campaign that tells a great story, beautiful visuals, top notch graphics [holds up as good as anything else in 2025] and super fun flow state combat. 10/10 and i really hope we get another game like this one in the future that tells a different story in a different part of the world!

The Good: Satisfying hack n' slash that is easy to pick up and start playing.
The Bad: Shield deflecting and instantly turning around looks absolutely jank.
The Ugly: The slo-mo on some poor ugly bastards faces seconds from execution.

⚔️
"Rome wasn’t built in a day... but it was avenged in blood."
🛡️
Ryse: Son of Rome** is an underrated cinematic masterpiece that deserves more love than it got
✅
What to Expect:
* 🎬 Jaw-dropping visuals that still hold up in 2025. Seriously, CryEngine did black magic here.
* 🗡️ Satisfying sword-and-shield combat — weighty, brutal, and beautiful.
* 🧠 Simple mechanics, addictive flow — yes, the executions repeat, but man… they NEVER stop looking good.
* 🎭 A surprisingly emotional story — betrayal, vengeance, honor... the Roman way.
* 🎮 Gladiator multiplayer (with traps, beasts & bloodthirsty crowds!) — short-lived but pure adrenaline. Aaand yes you can invite your friends to play together.
❌
What You Might Not Love:
* Repetitive gameplay for some — if you're looking for deep combat combos or RPG mechanics, this ain’t it.
* Short campaign — around 6–8 hours (but what a ride it is).
* Multiplayer servers are quiet — still, the solo experience shines.
🏛️
Final Verdict:
Ryse: Son of Rome is like playing a live-action Roman epic.
It’s not flawless — but it doesn’t need to be.
It’s bold. It’s brutal. It’s BEAUTIFUL.
👉 If you love cinematic storytelling, ancient history, or just slicing through barbarians in slow-mo glory — play this.
You won’t regret it.
🔥 8.5/10 — Hail Marius. Hail Rome. 🔥
🖱️ Give this a thumbs up if you believe Ryse deserves a sequel!

It's got Batman Arkham-esque combat with more swords, blood, and dismembered body parts. Just don't pay full price, wait for 50% or more off during a sale. It only 4-5 hours long for an initial playthrough

Amazing setting and combat but the performance is shockingly bad. Would love to give a 5 star but at the moment its a 3.
