Really enjoyed this game. If you're a fan of Inside or even RiME then I think you'd enjoy COCOON. Like RiME, the puzzles make good use of the game mechanics and environment, so although the majority aren't super challenging, I think they're still interesting to play. The sound design, graphics, and art style are phenomenal, and are very reminiscent of Inside throughout the entire game. My only criticisms are that you will find yourself backtracking often, especially as you don't know what puzzle is next, and the puzzles are a bit slow to ramp up in difficulty, which some may dislike.

Decent little adventure/puzzle game. Emphasis is on thinking outside the box. The collectibles are hidden puzzles, which is kinda great. I went back for them only because of the rather awesome load feature. You can go back to whatever checkpoint you like, arranged by % of the game complete.

Easy to recommend! Like Portal 2, the puzzles here are short brain teasers that always make you feel clever. You never spend too long on one puzzle, they are always there to move you from one location to the next. The clever twist here is how the space itself becomes the tool you use to solve the next puzzles, because in COCOON you can carry the level on your back, and the game explores really interesting ideas with this mechanic. Moving through the game, I found I was often stunned by the environments and sound design, if you loved INSIDE, then you'll love COCOON

This game is absolutly mind-blowing. Its most impressive quality is the elegance of the puzzles. They often restrict you to a low number of interactions but still succeed to push to think outside the box. The solution is always a new way of interacting with the mechanics. And the presentation is top notch; no tutorial, gorgeous and mysterious environnement, stellar sound design and my favorite : plethora of captivating animation and vfx. This game is a few hours of pure bliss

Played entirely on Steam Deck, start to finish with no adjustments required (about 4-6 hours, but of course Steam Deck is awful at tracking time in games offline). If you're a fan of games like Portal, this scratches a similar itch minus the humor. The visuals are abstract and alien, yet the game is brilliant in it's design and in slowly teaching you about the environment/puzzles/bosses. I truly love how simple the game plays yet still catches you off guard with complex ideas and unique circumstances. The puzzles were never overly frustrating and the game has a musical flourish when you're on the right track so it made it very satisfying when you figure it out. The game is also broken down in percentages from the loading screen, so you know exactly how far along you are and can easily backtrack to retry or find collectibles.

This game has a lot of very unique and interesting puzzle mechanics that enable some really interesting puzzles. The puzzles themselves are also not too difficult, but hard enough that they require some thinking and are quite satisfying when you solve them. The music in this game is also good, not as great as other soundtracks that I've heard before though. However, it's the visuals that really make it a great game in my opinion. There's a decent amount of visual storytelling, but it leaves a lot of room for interpretation. That's what really makes you want to keep playing. Sadly, you can't keep playing for very long. The game takes only about 4 hours to complete. Therefore, I don't think it sould be worth this much money. So you should definitely only buy it when there's a discount. In conclusion: great game if you have some time to kill, but that's about it.

I really liked this puzzle game, interesting worlds and mechanisms. Very simple controls, though I would recommend using a controller at least for the boss "fights"(these are also puzzles but do require dexterity).

Cocoon has interesting puzzle mechanics, but explores them only shallowly. The excellent visuals and sound design make up for the lack of depth. This game is a worthwhile experience. (The listed playtime is incorrect, at time of review I only had 3 hours and I can't see myself putting more time than that into it).

Simply amazing and mind blowing. The soundtrack is fire, graphics are so cool and the puzzles are intuitive but not too easy. It's a great short game to enjoy in one or two sittings.

One of the best games I have played this year. The level design is absolutely phenomenal and very well thought out. Love the art direction. Its a game that tells a story through its actions and not words which is something AAA developers can learn from. My only gripe with it is its very short. Literally can be finished in a day. On a whole its one of those games you play sitting on the couch at home while relaxing while still being engaging and intriguing. 9/10

This game is beautiful, so lovingly designed. The puzzles are tricky and the boss fights are challenging, but even when I had to re-try them 10 times over, I did not get frustrated because I enjoyed the mechanics. Nothing ever felt like a slog. The puzzles are exactly the level of tricky where, if I can't figure one out immediately and take a break from the game, I ALWAYS find something new that I missed when I come back. I wish I could play another 10h of this.

A masterpiece in Puzzle games, the game is so perfectly executed that it doesn't need any tutorial, advice or clue to make you understand it and solve it. It's truly statifying when you advance on your own solving the different puzzles and you realize that the game it self teached you perfectly how to play it just by the game design. I can't recommend it enough if you enjoy puzzle games, for me is just the right difficulty and duration 10/10.

Up to 5 hours of gameplay, but visually innovative, impressive and enjoyable. In terms of gameplay, it’s pretty easy game with puzzles and riddles to solves, but not overly complicated, so you can go through it in a “flow”

Not bad. Non trivial puzzles but not so difficult that they actually slow you down. Was just beginning to outstay its welcome when it finished.

Yes play the game! Its very fun. There's amazing visuals and a great soundtrack that really just enhance the experience. You won't get much of a story but that's okay, its just a fun game to binge. It doesn't take very long to 100% and getting the secret ending is pretty cool once you figure it out. If you're looking for complex puzzles that really bend your mind or allow many options, this game isn't quite right, but as long as you're happy with a simple puzzle game, then I certainly suggest this!

Fun but pretentious. Puzzles only really start to become interesting in the last quarter of the game. Game is lacking a lot of substance... to the tune of me really wanting it to end sooner than later.

Prepare to be absolutely mesmerized. Cocoon isn't just a game; it's an experience that will leave you breathless with its sheer brilliance. From the moment you dive into its alien landscapes, you'll be captivated by the ingenious world-within-a-world mechanics, each orb unlocking new layers of puzzles and breathtaking vistas. The art style is simply stunning, a vibrant and enigmatic tapestry of organic forms and subtle technological wonders. And the puzzles! Oh, the puzzles are a masterclass in elegant design – challenging enough to make you feel like a genius when you solve them, yet never frustrating. Every single discovery, every new interaction, every perfectly executed solution feels like a moment of pure, unadulterated joy. Cocoon is a triumph of imagination and execution, a concise yet endlessly rewarding journey that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Do yourself a favor and play this game. It's a masterpiece.

Enjoyable and intriguing from start to finish. Never once did I quit the game or look something up out of frustration. Perfect and meticulous game design result in no puzzle ever stumping you for too long. The only times I exited out of the game was because my brain was starting to melt from the sheer complexity of ideas poured into this game. Coupled with fantastic art direction results in one of the best puzzle games ever made with the only negative I can give this game being that I want more. 10/10

Apparently I am one of like 10 people who played this before it was on the Game Awards. I don't know why this was at the Game Awards. Neutral leaning positive. Treat it more like a movie - environmental design is gorgeous and intricate, not surprised at all that one of the guys who made INSIDE is responsible for this. Gameplay is responsive and satisfying but puzzle design is immensely lacking. Part of an emergent trend of what I've dubbed "concept puzzlers" a la Superliminal or Viewfinder, where the game is more of a tech demo for a concept for a puzzle game rather than a full puzzle game. Focus is on "look how cool this mechanic is" rather than "look how cool this mechanic is, now here are some challenging and clever puzzles utilizing it": you blow through a linear collection of (again, very very pretty) areas where the solution is always "use A to open B then grab A back while holding B open". The boss battles were cool.

This game is good but it's very short, taking me less than 4 hours and it can easily be under 3 if you don't try to hunt for secrets; which would be fine if those 3-4 hours were exceptional, but they weren't. On top of that, I felt like the game underutilized the core mechanic of having worlds nested within other worlds; it only really started utilizing this mechanic in interesting ways that made me think within the last quarter of the game (it might be more accurate to label this game as a walking sim, instead of a puzzle game). The majority of the optional content is found just a few feet off the beaten path, and is collected with a simple button press: I found all but 3 of the hidden moons and only one of them had any kind of puzzle associated with it, and it was a simple "repeat the pattern" type puzzle. It's definitely worth considering if it's on sale, but $25 is almost double what it should be. [I played this game while offline, so that's probably why the playtime tracker is off]

Eh. Lackluster. My feelings for this game is much like how I feel writing this review. I literally couldn't be bothered. It's just not worth the effort. I'll write one anyway. Tldr So, uh, basically, if you like puzzle games, you'll like this because it's a puzzle game but if you like puzzle games you won't like this because uh because uh it's just too easy. I seriously pulled up youtube while playing because the puzzles were so self-explanatory that I could do most of them without thinking. I actually felt myself getting dumber. Not that the puzzles were bad or anything, It had its good moments but i was just like "ehhhhhhhhhhh, I could force myself to play this, or any other game I like better." Which is many. Many games are better. Many puzzle games are better. I feel like this "puzzle game" is one that would have been amazing 5 years ago, but as more puzzle games come out, each older one becomes obvious and boring. Buy Tunic. It's awesome. Buy Outer wilds. It's awesome. Buy blue prince. These are all puzzle games (or at least have such massive puzzle elements to where 90% of the fans are puzzle fans) but like- $25??? For this whoopee-cushion-disappointment?? For $15 then maybe but like... Uuah?? Every game I mentioned before was either cheaper than this sad puzzle game or so worth the money that my wallet hung itself just to give the devs more cash. Tldr #2: Spongebob squarepants is the weakest smashbros character.

[Mediocre] puzzle game. Great visuals, great environment, and great concept. Concepts and mechanics are the interesting parts of the game; the mechanics create an interesting "one-time" puzzle. The game itself is interesting, visually appealing, and very chill. The issue is how repetitive and easy those puzzles are and how tedious they can become. Turning point for me, for making this negative, was where it devolved into
packing and unpacking and packing the orbs. Specifically, white orb shooting into green orb, this was easy and boring to do
. In retrospect, it's hard to call those puzzles puzzles. There's a puzzle and a fairly obvious solution; that solution becomes a solution for most of those puzzles. You come in and you perform the solution, not think of it. There's also no real story,
it's just a metaphor
.
I wrote this review for the Thinky Games Database. Check out the Thinky Games curation group for more reviews on Steam!
Cocoon is a puzzle-adventure game where your character travels between entangled worlds, leveraging alien technology along the way. The worlds themselves come in the form of transportable orbs, which must be entered or exited in order to clear the challenges. With expansive art direction and a mostly seamless sense of progression, Cocoon focuses on delivering a spellbinding experience. As a cosmic, moth-like creature, you make your way across scenic environments by harnessing the power of world-spheres. These mysterious artifacts enable you to carry entire areas of the game world on your back, which can be swapped around in order to untangle knotty paths. Each orb also grants a unique ability, like rebuilding collapsed bridges in a small circular zone around your character. Mixing up these abilities as you come in and out of the orbs is key to accessing new areas. These recursive mechanics may be reminiscent of complex games like Patrick’s Parabox, or the aptly named Recursed, but Cocoon goes out of its way to remain approachable. The mind-warping aspect of parallel worlds is mitigated by a smooth progression curve, and the exploration is deftly guided by audio cues, color-coded environments, and one-way level transitions. In an effort to streamline interactivity, the studio made sure that different actions (such as opening a door, activating a lift, or plunging into an orb) would not conflict with each other, thus allowing the use of a single action key/button. Even in the late puzzles and their careful setups, the game does not stray from a serene linearity. In that sense, Cocoon is very much in line with the previous games designed by Jeppe Carlsen, like Limbo or Inside. Again it features no dialogue, aiming for a sense of otherworldly mystery. Insect-drone companions and other biomechanical contraptions roam exotic, low-poly decors. Most creatures are non-threatening, except for a few unearthly bosses confined to short puzzle-action sequences. This ambitious art direction is capped off with pristine sound design, built around synthetic noises which blend both organic and industrial elements.
