After my experience with the Legend of Grimrock I, I was not looking forward to playing its successor, but nonetheless, I decided to give it a try just for the challenge. And my apprehensions underestimated the flaws in Grimrock II. Mind you that I am an advanced adventure/puzzle gamer who has tackled some of the most difficult games in this genre. Nonetheless, my skills proved grossly inadequate when I got stuck solving the puzzles and traps in Grimrock II. Rather than write a lengthy review, let me summarize the positives and negatives:
Positives:
- The artwork is amazing. Graphics are also very good, although pale in comparison to the Tomb Raider series.
- The game has great replay value thanks to the variety of players available, puzzles that you will be unable to solve on your first attempt, and the different ways in which one can gain skills from collecting skill points.
- The music is quite good.
- The game is extremely challenging even in the 'Normal' level of difficulty. So, you will not feel underwhelmed fighting the monsters and bosses in this game. The variety of enemies in this game is impressive, and players must use different strategies to defeat each one.
- There are lots of puzzles, riddles, and mysteries to tackle. Several of them are ingeniously designed and so are a lot of fun to tackle.
- I played the game 91 hours before finishing it on my first attempt.
Negatives:
- The developers have provided inadequate, vague, misleading, and highly confusing clues to solve some crucial puzzles that players will need to solve to be able to advance in this game. The result is that the insane amount of frustration and helplessness will nullify whatever thrill/challenge players experience from other well-designed aspects of the game. I had to consult walkthrough videos/guides at least five times to tackle some of the hardest puzzles.
- Several of the monsters/bosses are way too challenging, and one must come up with ingenious ways to defeat them. While there are games out there that are not challenging enough, this game is the other extreme.
- The game is extremely confusing to navigate, even with the help of a map, because of the countless corridors, stairways, upper levels, lower levels, etc.
- It is almost always a struggle to procure enough food for your four characters, because they use it up quite fast, and the developers have done a poor job providing adequate quantities of it. Without sufficient food, your four players will do half the damage and will not regenerate health.
- Your four players gain skill points too slowly; so by the end of the game, they will be able to fully develop at the most one or two attributes out of the fifteen or so that they are endowed with.
- The firearms jam too much unless one upgrades them several times; as a result, they are not very effective at the beginning.
- If all four players die, the game takes you back to the main menu rather than to the 'Load Game' menu.
- Ingredients needed to make health potions are sparse, and as a result, players will find themselves frequently visiting the blue crystals to bring back dead players and to restore their health. Doing this is time consuming.
- Some monsters cannot be defeated unless you obtain certain weapons/spells later on in this game; as a result, one must simply run away from them.
This would have been a brilliant game had the developers provided better clues to some of the puzzles. So, despite all the positive aspects of this game, I do not recommend it simply for this reason. I pulled out WAAAAAAAAAY too much hair trying different strategies to tackle some of the puzzles before giving up and consulting walkthrough videos/guides. It is by far the hardest puzzle/adventure game I have ever played. Nonetheless, if you decide to play it, good luck to you!
