SENRAN KAGURA ESTIVAL VERSUS

This is both the best and the worst of the mainline Senran Kagura games at the same time. [u]Why is it the best?[/u] The story is the best so far, and new, fun mechanics—like wall jumping—have been added. The new characters are a great addition to the franchise, and the fanservice, thanks to the newly introduced finishers, is the best the series has seen (so far). [u]Why is it the worst?[/u] The combat in this game is just terrible. Most of the characters are really, really bad—poor damage, slow movement, no AoE capabilities, and weak movesets (looking at Ryobi and Kafuru). And yet, you have to play them for 90% of the game. During the story, you only get to play good, strong characters like Homura or Asuka once or twice—heck, Homura is only playable in a tutorial level. After that, you can only use her when replaying levels or playing her standalone storyline. To top it off, you are constantly overwhelmed by the sheer number of enemies. Tons of grunts—some so strong that you must rely on your only dependable healing method (Shinobi Transformation) just to deal with them. And when you finally reach a boss, half the time, you’re stuck in 3v1 fights where the enemy is backed by an army of grunts—even though the game has systems in place for AI shinobi allies or friendly grunts (which would make sense story-wise). And I haven’t even mentioned the constant CC and stagger effects. You get hit with them so frequently that there are parts where you literally can’t do anything for minutes. Minutes. Oh, and just to add another issue: damage numbers are so low that combat feels painfully slow. And if that wasn’t enough, the game forces you to fight through 3–6 waves of enemies before you can even get to the boss fight. I know the franchise is considered dead at this point, but I hope Sony sees the light—thanks to the success of Stellar Blade—and we get to see it rise again. The story isn’t finished yet.
