It shows its age in a lot of ways, but holds up surprisingly well despite the jankiness. Definitely one of my favorite RPGs. The aesthetics and overall atmosphere make it really engaging and memorable. Scary in so many ways. The sound effects and voice acting for the enemies are especially haunting. I thought the voice acting for the audio logs was bad though, with a handful of exceptions. The last few segments of the game fall off heavily in quality and mood, but the first 80% is so enjoyable it doesn't ruin my experience. It can be pretty unforgiving in difficulty until you learn the layout of the map, the attack patterns of enemies, and which upgrades to take. I did my first run on easy and worked my way up to the hardest on subsequent runs. Thankfully it has a lot of replayability, different builds to try, and secrets to find.

No need to wax lyrical about how utterly brilliant this game is - we all know that. Let's talk technicalities instead. This is essentially the same modded version as the 25th Anniversary Edition - but crucially, it's the original, which makes it infinitely superior. And it runs on any modern OS, and with any modern resolution you like. Now do yourself a favour: buy it, play it, breathe it in. Proper gaming awaits

[h3]I understand that for its time it was a breakthrough, and the game has a cult status, but after 26 years it is really difficult to enter it without nostalgia or mods.

A classic without parallel. I played this after finishing the System Shock 1 remake and it still holds up remarkably well, bar a couple performance mods for my rig.

I've played the original remake of System Shock and liked it very much. This one is different but is still enjoyable to play and can be quite challenging. I also have purchased the remastered edition of System Shock 2 and will play that next to see the differences if any.

Played this game for the first time ~26 years after its initial release and had a blast despite its many flaws! Pros: - multifaceted and complex rpg system with a variety of weapons, psi, hacking, stats, items etc. - dark spaceship setting with multiple distinct sections (comparable to Doom 3, which certainly copied several elements from this game!) - repairable, hackable, maintainable weapons and tech around every corner - adjustable difficulty - beware: this game can get really difficult! Neutral: - for those who played Bioshock: let's say you will find many parallels - whether that is good or not depends on how much you like or dislike Bioshock! Cons: - clunky close-combat - weird hitbox of smaller enemies in close-combat - can be frustrating! - outdated email, log and note system - disrupts the game flow - no subtitle option which may lead to information loss - outdated graphics, animations etc. (please keep in mind this game came out in 1999!) - stupid AI (I'm not talking about Shodan :D) - rather simple hacking system - could've been a little more complex! All in all I recommend this game to those who like sci-fi shooter games with RPG elements and who don't mind outdated graphics and gameplay!

Such a classic. Quite a challenging game at times, especially at first, which can be very frustrating, but later on you become a brute and just blast through everything in your way. If you can endure through it you will ultimately get yourself into an amazing experience you can't really find in games anymore.

Still holds up, although broadness of environment art, balance and encounters could've been much better.
