Total War: EMPIRE – Definitive Edition is a comprehensive and polished update to one of the most ambitious entries in the Total War series, blending grand strategy with epic real-time battles set during the volatile 18th century. Covering a period of intense geopolitical upheaval, colonization, and technological advancement, the game immerses players in a sprawling campaign where diplomacy, military might, and economic management all play crucial roles. The Definitive Edition refines the experience with improved visuals, UI enhancements, and all previously released content, making it the ultimate way to experience this classic. At the heart of Empire lies the dual gameplay loop: the strategic campaign map where you govern your empire, manage diplomacy, research technology, and expand your influence; and the real-time tactical battles that bring historical warfare to life. The scale is impressive, with dozens of playable factions spanning Europe, Asia, and the Americas, each with unique units, challenges, and strategic positions. Naval warfare, a major highlight of the game, is detailed and rewarding, adding an extra dimension to both combat and empire-building. The Definitive Edition smooths many rough edges from the original release, offering a more user-friendly interface and better AI, which makes diplomacy and combat feel more engaging and less frustrating. The game’s complexity can be daunting at first, but the depth is what fans of grand strategy cherish. Managing supply lines, balancing budgets, and navigating alliances or betrayals create a rich tapestry of decisions that shape your path to dominance—or ruin. Visually, the update enhances the detailed units, sprawling battlefields, and vibrant cities, breathing new life into the 18th-century setting. The soundtrack and sound effects evoke the era’s tension and drama, from the thunder of cannon fire to the subtle ambient sounds of bustling ports and forests. These elements contribute to an immersive historical experience that both educates and entertains. In summary, Total War: EMPIRE – Definitive Edition stands as a definitive package for strategy enthusiasts seeking a complex, historically grounded, and visually improved Total War title. Its vast scope, combined with engaging tactical battles and deep strategic layers, offers countless hours of gameplay. Whether you’re reliving the Age of Enlightenment’s conflicts or forging your own empire, this edition is a worthy revisit for longtime fans and a strong recommendation for newcomers to the series. It pains me to do this but this game is just so dated. The ai is PAINFULLY bad and the auto-resolve is so broken. You can bring 3 thousand men more in elite units and still lose to two militia men with one artillery unit. Not to mention the problems with provinces (France being just 1 :sob:). The AI also refuses entirely fair treaties, I could take all of Frances land in Europe and in the peace deal I propose giving them back all their European land and paying THEM 5k gold, along with giving them technology and they will refuse it outright. It makes the grand campaign almost unplayable.

I only played this for the first time recently, I think I had always been putting it off because the initial reception on this games release was rather mixed. I'll be honest, it's actually pretty damn good, beautiful looking too. I like how the world map is different to your typical Total War game - You have multiple theaters to be worried about depending on which global power you pick. The UI was great, easy to understand, and pretty-looking. So why don't I recommend it? Personally I think your time is better spent on Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai for your gunpowder Total War fix. This is more of a personal rather than objective thing, but I honestly just think FOTS plays better overall, and looks even more beautiful.

This is my favorite Total War Game and I'm so excited to force a friend to play the new multiplayer grand campaign mode they added back in decades after release.

Technical problems for which I haven't found a solution after spending more time on them then on the game itself.. Really like the game but there's a lot of diminished joy because of this.

First gunpowder TW game, and I love it. Might be my favorite ever, and I've played many. Scale of map is fantastic, and there's a blend of old school TW feel like a Medieval 2 but with a lot more recognizable/familiar world and some real variations in your typical tactics because of the realities of gunpowder.

The only thing that would make me happier is to have the improvements from the mobile version put into the PC version. As it stands the game is great and has always been a bit of a gem in the total war franchise...

Fix the AI plz. it's been over a decade and the game is still not polished enough for released. This game could still be the best total war ever with just a little love.

Empire is a true throwback and while is hasn't aged as well as some other titles you cant beat playing as the US and fighting in large battles with the British on "American Soil". I will say the ai does do some interesting things in just vanilla gameplay, but being a Total War fan and getting to relive a very important time period in history as an American just hits the right way. I wouldn't recommend this game to someone who isn't into slow turn based campaigns or is looking for a clean cut perfect game.. but if you love Total War, happen to enjoy a piece of Americas history, and or are looking for a great cinematic game that tests your brain allows you to control major armys and navys on different terrain....then this might just be for you! I'll forever play ETW.

Starts as UK colony, kill natives, ally natives, fight the french, ally the french and rebel against the UK, defend Boston, defend Boston successfully 3 times, move army out to attack small defended town. Gets boston raided, loses boston, crashes out. Then plays Total War: Empire

I've played this game for years and I find myself coming back to it due to how much fun it is to play and dominate on multiple continents. Wish they made sequel to this game, but for the time being I'll just stick to this one.

I havent played much but most of my hours are from one sitting. This total war installment is surprisingly addictive. It runs well (although it has some bugs) and it looks great. The gameplay is nice although units can be annoying in terms of getting them to do what you want, whereas medieval II doesnt really have that problem.

Great game. Too bad about the AI (1000 enemy KIA to my 160, enemy walls breached, town ransacked and army running unopposed through the streets taking their spoils. Yup thats a minor loss with my army being wiped out). And too bad if you want any strategic knowledge, cause then you need to watch the enemy turns, but that just involves watching their single man raiding parties and agents slowly....very slowly walking around the globe every turn. Then theres the endless loading screens and the ships that take an eternity to sink (you will have to watch six of those each round). So yeah it is fun, but you will spend a good three quarters of your time not even actually playing and so therefore I wouldnt suggest it.

I don't know when they plan on remaking this.. If they'd stop making those lame ass warhammer games, then maybe they can get around to making a legitimately good game again, and remake Empire Total War.. This is the greatest game out of the entire series, which was 2x better with darthmod, but still. The trade system, economic system, the WORLD MAP. It was definitely innovative for its time compared to other total war games. I really do hope they remake this game, and keep the same mentality about how important an economy is without making it an economic simulator. Total War games are of course all about the battles, but without making an economy simulator, they still dump plenty of economic objectives to attack or control. The economy is obviously important and they gave you a way to disrupt the opponents economy, or if you want to boom, there was a realistic reason for not going to war, and allowing your towns to boom first. Honestly, hats off to the creative team on this one.

Gameplay Mechanics: 8/10 Narrative: 6/10 Graphics: 7/10 Sound and Music: 8/10 Replayability: 8/10 Innovation: 9/10 Empire: Total War was a bold step forward for the series when it launched, and the Definitive Edition wraps it all up with the expansions in one solid package. Set during the Age of Enlightenment, this entry brings gunpowder warfare, colonial expansion, and naval battles into the spotlight—and does a pretty damn good job at it. Gameplay mechanics strike a great balance between depth and scope. You’re managing multiple continents, colonies, trade routes, diplomacy, and—of course—huge armies. Land battles are solid, but it’s the naval battles that really stand out here, adding a whole new layer of strategy and timing. Score: 8/10. Narrative is light, as usual for a Total War game. You pick a faction and carve your way across the 18th century world. There’s some scripted flavor in the Road to Independence campaign, but don’t expect a heavily guided story. Score: 6/10. Graphics were impressive for their time and still hold up decently. The smoke-filled battlefields, uniforms, and ship models all contribute to the immersive feel, even if animations are a bit stiff by today’s standards. Score: 7/10. Sound and music are a big plus. Musket fire, cannon blasts, and clashing sabers sound great, and the orchestral soundtrack fits the era perfectly. It adds real atmosphere, especially in the heat of battle. Score: 8/10. Replayability is high. Tons of factions to try, each with different starting conditions, goals, and global positioning. Whether you’re dominating Europe, India, or the Americas, each campaign can play out in vastly different ways. Score: 8/10. Innovation was huge. This was the first Total War with real-time naval battles, proper gunpowder mechanics, global-scale conflict, and a deeper economic and diplomatic model. It set the stage for future historical entries. Score: 9/10. In short: Empire: Total War is a classic. It might be a little janky in spots, but the ambition and scope still make it one of the most memorable and unique entries in the franchise. Cannonballs, colonial conquest, and tactical sailing—it’s all here.

Game crashes constantly. Usually when ending your turn. I have yet to complete a campaign because of this issue. I can not recommend a game that cant be completed. I think this should be taken down from the store. It's that bad. A professional company shouldn't be selling something that is this broken.

Play as Portugal. Take over Spain and all their colonies in the Americas. Destroyed all their fleets. After 10 years at war, Spain is barely surviving with 1 settlement left. So I offer peace with no terms to give them a chance before they get wiped out. Spain: "How dare you insult me like that!" The closest thing you'll get to a peace treaty is when they counter the offer and demand you give back EVERYTHING you took for nothing. Imagine if every country played like germany in ww2. Naval battles are 10/10 though. I give this game a thumbs up because it is genuinely fun and there's no other game like it. Playing as a European power focusing on colonial expansion is the good part of this game.

the AI just stands there. they attack a fort, and then dont move, put on 3 times speed... still have to wait 25 min for the AI to lose for not taking the control point, or they just let you kill them all with cannons. mods dont fix. its strait crap
