Game feels like a mediocre attempt to build something in the same vein as Mass Effect. The movement and mechanics are subpar for the time it was released. So far I don't even feel the desire to finish the game. On high difficulties enemies just feel like bullet sponges and your AI companions are basically only useful for their abilities. On average I think they killed 5 enemies for every 60 I killed. And most likely that is just from the abilities I made them use.
Edit: After lowering the difficulty a tier, the enemies are no longer bullet sponges unless they are special. The AI don't die immediately any time they decide to leave where I told them to take cover for no discernible reason. They're still pretty rough, but it's fine. The game feels pretty boring though. It feels like a clunky mass effect, or a less strategic XCOM. I guess I just don't really understand why. Why make this this way? Did they just want to jump on the success of cover shooters at the time? Was the goal to try and be a more strategic Mass Effect? I can't say for sure. All I know is that it feels like a lesser version of all the games mentioned. I guess I'd give it a general 6/10. Nothing about it stands out as fantastic, impressive, or great. But it's fine, if you need something to kill time with, there are worse options, but there's also a ton of better options.
Edit 2: Done with the game now, the last couple missions definitely at least had some interesting factors. There are some weird spots that kinda require you to suspend disbelief, but at least it's interesting. It just took so long to become interesting that it felt like it was 6ish hours of slog for 2 hours of story. I wouldn't mind if the gameplay felt better at least.
