This is definitely one of the better Dread X Collections.
The quality is dramatically higher than past collections, but in some ways more sterile because of it.
Thoughts on Mechanics
I would say past collections took more creative risks with mechanics. This is a list of the few "unique" mechanics in the collection: [Karao & Rotten Stigma] have guns and ammo management. [Hunsvotti] gives you powers near the end. [We Never Left] let's you play an ingame text adventure that affects the world around you slightly. [Vestige] pretends to be a point and click but gives you almost no actions. But, it does have a tv you can play the "real game" on, which is driving a motorcycle and doing tricks. So, ironically, that makes it one of the deeper games. [Gallerie] has a cool alien language you have to study to communicate with an entity. [Book of Blood] has a book you have to study and interact with to learn its secrets. And that's literally all the unique mechanics in any of the games. The rest are just walking simulators with locked doors, keys, and basic interactions.
The Rankings
The Good: -Karao -Resver -We Never Left -Vestige -The Book of Blood The Ok: -Spirit Guardian -Rotten Stigma -Hunsvotti -Gallerie The Bad: -Interim -Beyond the Curtain -Ludomalica

Kinda disappointed ngl. 6 out of 12 games are very buggy and feels unpolished. There are not a single game in Collection 5 that are memorable compared to Collection 1, 2 and 3.

I've spent the last bit playing each of these dreadx collections in a row, and it brings me no satisfaction to say that this was by far the least fun and interesting of the 5 for me. Now I'm going to cut to the chase here since some people might be like "why are you recommending it then?" and much like with volume 4 which I wasn't as nuts about as volumes 1, 2, and, 3 (that get way higher recommendations) I still think these are worth it (on sale in this case) because it's a neat experience that some people may not have experienced yet. But yeah, this has the weakest wrapper. It just feels phoned in and lifeless in the fun park, and the quiet isn't unsettling it's just odd. The creature looks neat, but there's really only the final section where they seem like a spooky threat. And the comic storyline is just... yeah i dunno I didn't like the one they had in volume 2 either so maybe i just dont gel with that artist and writer. The main overarching issue is this experience just feels so limp. The first 3 collections felt so full of energy and weirdness and creativity. There's no real spark to anything in general here in the wrapper and in the lineup. None of the games are absolutely duds or broken so there's that, but in this case even the ones I enjoyed have sometimes massive caveats. Anyways this is a bummer lol so I'm just gonna get to the rundown: I enjoyed: Resver Ludomalica Book of Blood (too dark tho lol) Fun, but needs a lot of polish: Rotten Stigma We Never Left (an added note on this because - sigh - this was great... i just think a LOT could've been cut to make it scarier and more effective in terms of audio recordings and journals - it took me out of it with the melodrama, I just don't think it needed it) I guess it was fine? (shrug) Beyond the Curtain Karao Hunsvotti Spirit Guardian I quit almost immediately: Vestige (the blinking is so jarring and obnoxious to me, i didn't want to deal with it) Gallerie (some real fake-deep "I AM AN AUTEUR" energy here) Interim (I'm not sure WHY you'd want some Gen Y/Z kid doing Temu Rod Serling with bad foley to intro your game but it's a choice I guess) While it didn't end like I hoped, I still all in all am glad I took the DreadX collection journey! Thanks to all the devs and publishers for making these neat things.
