Cobalt Core is a roguelike game in which you must defeat a series of spaceships in turn-based fights to make your way to the final boss.
Before each run, you'll choose a ship and build a team of 3 characters, each one bringing their own set of unique cards you'll use for combat. Each card set focuses on a different aspect, such as attack, defense, maneuverability, and others that you'll gradually discover while playing. You'll also unlock new characters and even new ships over time, which exponentially increase the number of possible combinations and strategies you can come up with. This, coupled with card upgrades you'll get throughout runs, and the many different types of enemies you'll face, make each run a fresh and fun experience.
The combat is great, but it's not the only thing that makes Cobalt Core a blast to play. What truly makes it stand out is its presentation and tone. The game has a great art style, especially when it comes to character designs, and all characters are very charming and full of personality, with their own unique interactions and quips. The game has a nice balance between being playful and having genuinely intriguing lore that keeps you wanting to do more runs to learn more about its story.
And the cherry on top of the whole experience is the soundtrack. The music is phenomenal, and I've listened to the OST countless times while not even playing the game. In fact, its OST was how I learned about the game's existence to begin with! There's a nice variety of tracks, with several songs have become some of my favorite video game music ever.
All in all, Cobalt Core is a very charming game with fun combat, tons of variety, memorable characters, and a fantastic soundtrack. It's a full plate for anyone who enjoys strategic combat that gives the player ample freedom, and also those looking for a cozy adventure with quirky characters and great music.
