I knew nothing when I bought this game on a whim. I fell in love. The gameplay isn't totally unique, but its movement twist - being able to dodge attacks and aim your shots - makes it so engaging. The characters are all really charming, and they're funny without being annoying. Losing feels fair, even when you can't draw what you need. When the story isn't being funny or cute, it's still interesting. And the music! Aaron Cherof is a wizard, and you can't convince me otherwise. The music is beautiful, never gets grating, and many of the tracks made me tear up. If you don't buy the game, at least go listen to the soundtrack. I cannot recommend Cobalt Core enough. If you like deckbuilders, roguelikes, or anything on this store page's tags, I beg you to pick it up. It's the easiest and most unexpected 10/10 I could ever give.

This is a fantastic roguelike game by all rights. The difficulty scaling and the various synergies between characters give a lot of variety to provide the fun of progression from a mechanical sense. The addition of an overarching story does a great job of providing further incentive to grind past even the most challenging runs. It progresses through wins and losses to some degree, which can give that does a great job of shredding off some of the frustration that can build when it feels like you're not getting anywhere or experimenting with builds. The killer soundtrack is really the cherry on top, at that.

This has got to be the cutest, coziest rogue-like card game out there. The art not only looks great but is highly effective at showing what you need to see and cutting out all the noise. The ship movement options provide an organic extra layer on top of the standard card battler flow. The characters are adorable, mechanically unique, and you can combine them in various ways to build your crew (which in turn determines your starting deck and the upgrade options you'll see). And there's even a story. Best of all, this game respects your time in a way many rogue-likes don't: you can just have fun from the get go without any of the usual face-planting and the obligatory follow-up grind that has become the staple of the genre. An easy recommendation.

Cobalt Core is a roguelike game in which you must defeat a series of spaceships in turn-based fights to make your way to the final boss. Before each run, you'll choose a ship and build a team of 3 characters, each one bringing their own set of unique cards you'll use for combat. Each card set focuses on a different aspect, such as attack, defense, maneuverability, and others that you'll gradually discover while playing. You'll also unlock new characters and even new ships over time, which exponentially increase the number of possible combinations and strategies you can come up with. This, coupled with card upgrades you'll get throughout runs, and the many different types of enemies you'll face, make each run a fresh and fun experience. The combat is great, but it's not the only thing that makes Cobalt Core a blast to play. What truly makes it stand out is its presentation and tone. The game has a great art style, especially when it comes to character designs, and all characters are very charming and full of personality, with their own unique interactions and quips. The game has a nice balance between being playful and having genuinely intriguing lore that keeps you wanting to do more runs to learn more about its story. And the cherry on top of the whole experience is the soundtrack. The music is phenomenal, and I've listened to the OST countless times while not even playing the game. In fact, its OST was how I learned about the game's existence to begin with! There's a nice variety of tracks, with several songs have become some of my favorite video game music ever. All in all, Cobalt Core is a very charming game with fun combat, tons of variety, memorable characters, and a fantastic soundtrack. It's a full plate for anyone who enjoys strategic combat that gives the player ample freedom, and also those looking for a cozy adventure with quirky characters and great music.

It's narrative driven, meaning that the focus is more on the story rather than gameplay. I disliked Hades for this, but I see the appeal. It's fun for a few hours but gets repetitive fast.

Great rogue-like deckbuilder, notably with the addition of being able to move your ship, which adds a puzzle element to the levels which feels very natural and intuitive. Game plays very smoothly with nice animations, and I didn't experience a single bug. The story elements add a really nice sense of immersion to what can easily be a bit of a number-crunchy, stale genre. I'm a big fan of the graphics and colour pallets used - everything feels belonging to the universe. Overall, extremely impressed :)

furry slay the spire goes hard :3 The movement of your ship and middle objects are a nice twist. It is quite easy though, although this does mean that you can usually win with any set of cards by playing well.

Just finished the game and man... what a pleasant experience! Cobalt Core it's your usual Roguelike game where you need to destroy ships in other to reach the final boss. The map is divided in 3 Zone, with unique enemies (each time getting harder). In your ship, you have to select 3 crews out of 8, which each having uniques card (defense, attack, move, etc.). Each battle completed you are greeted with rewards such as cards and artifacts and those can be at your advantage or not. You get to upgrade or remove the cards too! Even repairing your own ship at the Shop. There are also Unknown places that can be visited (from the "?" icon on the map) where you may encounter some enemies or face a dangerous event (leaving you with 1 less card or some damage), or meet some friendly fellas that can give you rewards (after a challenge). I looked up on this game once I gifted it to my bestfriend (since it was on his wishlist), and I gotta say, it was worth the money I've spent! I hope to see more of games similar to this with interesting characters. I was surprised that the game's OST was made by none other than Aaron Cherof, known for his work on the Minecraft: Tricky Trials OST. The game's OST is freaking fantastic, especially Epoch, Mean Machine and Self-Defense. Overhaul, this is a game I would recommend to play, especially for those who are looking for a Roguelike Deckbuilder and strategy game.

It's exactly what I expected from looking at the screenshots. This is *not* a rogue-lite. You do not gain power over runs. There's a couple unlocks that give new ways of playing, but "better" is pretty subjective. Each playthrough takes about an hour... and after 16 playthoughs with different character/ship combinations it's played out for me. Your mileage may vary. Payed $13 for it, so I got my money's worth.

One of my favorite deck-building roguelites. Absolute killer of a soundtrack, nice story, and a ton of fun. Make sure to check out Sunshine Heavy Industries as well, Rocket Rat know what they're doing, and they do it WELL.

Very fun and cute game! Love the mixing of decks. Wish there were more opportunities to both add and remove cards so my deck could grow more as the game progressed so builds could gain more of an identity.

This is "Slay the Spire"... in space. If you liked that one, you will like this one, too. It's cutesy, also. :) The only sour note, is that this was in my wishlist. I was waiting for a 50% sale. I saw it go on sale for 51%, so I bought it. I only found out after, that Steam was selling a BUNDLE at 51% sale, not just this one game. The bundle was Cobalt Core (which I wanted), and another piece of poop that I never would have bought, had I known. The wishlist page gave NO indication of that. So now I have to always go to the actual store page and never again buy directly from my wishlist page. Thx, Steam!

This is an instant favorite. I am so sad that this game flew under my radar for so long! Do not let the same happen to you. The gameplay loop is so much fun, and the characters and story are VERY compelling. (Buy with knowledge that you will spend the next week of your life on this game)

I normally don't like these kinds of games, but this one looked particularly good. Im not used to thinking much when playing games, so this was quite the experience. I enjoyed it, and would recommend it to people who like deck building games. Each run takes less than an hour if you know what your doing.

I'll keep this short: The reviews don't lie! This game seems (so far) to be the perfect balance between sticking to what works and taking inspirations from the greats (Slay the Spire) and keeping it fresh with their unique battle system that not only adds movement, but also "Objects/Projectiles" that give at least 2 new dimensions for vet's of the genre to explore. +Music slaps +Characters are cool +Story is engaging and not dragging I see myself putting many hours into this :)

Polished look, funny dialogue, tight game play, with an absolutely amazing soundtrack. This game is much better than its predecessors of this genre. I am hoping this game opens up to overhaul mods to other characters / franchises / crossovers because that would make an already great game even better (and infinitely replayable).

An absolute gem of a game with an interesting story and a lovable cast of silly characters that has quickly become one of my favourites of all time. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys rogue-likes or deck builders, or even people who are new to the genre, as the difficulty is customisable.

The amount of characters and ships make for a very deep gameplay with a lot of possibilities and strategies. The banter between the characters is fun and light and the overhal story is pretty fun to discover. If you like roguelikes this one is a must play.

What Cobalt Core does best in my opinion is the vibes. I love the gorgeous pixel art, the music that is good enough to stand on its own, and the outer space theming of the game. Additionally, while the story is not the main focus of the game, it plays an important supporting role and helps flesh out the world a lot. I like the game's sense of humor, and the gameplay is very satsifying when you get a strong build. While I can't say that I'm very good at the game, it is still a lot of fun on lower difficulties, and there is a lot of strategy in how you build your deck to succeed.

This is an easy to get into rogue-like, there isn't much complexity or much forward thinking required. The gameplay leans towards some particular strategies and the enemy variety is limited so runs can get repetitive eventually. But the graphics are stylish and the core gameplay is solid. Overall if you really like the genre consider picking it up at full price, or just wait for a sale.

fine. it's charming, and all: the aesthetics are great, but what matters about a roguelike is its gameplay, and the gameplay here feels unsatisfying. i felt like it didn't ask enough of me as a player; there was insufficient complexity, for the most part, and there were times where it felt like the game wanted to me think, but was poorly implemented enough that i didn't have to engage with its mechanics to, say, finish off a boss. i'm sorry to write a negative review, given that this is an indie studio who seems to be trying something new, but it doesn't work for me.

I actually like the game but theres some critical issues with it for me. 1) When you view your deck (which u often do), i can only see 10 cards clearly and the top halfs of 5 more cards. i have no way to scroll. Not sure if mouse works but im playing in my bed and dont want to play with a mouse. Ive never seen this function missing in this type of game before. Arrowkeys, mousepad, nothing works. 2)'The game when i close it doesnt actually close. it keeps on running in the background, and its power usage is quite high. It says i have 22h of gameplay when its actually like 3h but i keep forgetting i need to manually close it in steam of task manager. 3) Too many annoying text story. I'll be honest and say i dont like reading stories. But for some reason i cant skip it. it annoys me so much i will probably refund the game because it was something the devs said they will add... 2 years ago. but i cant refund bc of issue 2 giving me too many playing hours
