With the discount, it's one of the cheapest Chess games on Steam. Steam cards are overrated... means you can sell them and get back the good half of the paid price of the game. And if you know how to play (at least a bit above the beginner's level, like ELO 1000+), it's a quick "complete" game. If you're a beginner, there is a short guide book included, as well as the "chaos mode", where AI moves its pieces absolutely at random. My 5 y.o. girl likes that mode. But... that's about all good I can say about that game. Multiplayer is empty, and the netcode far from perfect. In single-play, there are only 4 AI difficulty levels, and the "hardest" of them play like amateur, with many faults. However, there is a hidden joke, since the AI of level "easy" is the most aggressive and capable of providing at least some challenge. Kinda like Nuclear Gandhi. What's more, in one session (on the 4th, "hard" level) the opponent's King in one moment made his move on the "en passant" square, which is naturally an illegal move. Not that it helped him, but still, if the game can't follow the basic set of rules, it is obviously a serious fault. There is also a common freeze when you're trying to move your piece through all the board (Queen, Rook or Bishop), making the game really painful if you're aiming for a blitz. Colour gamma, other little things... Nothing there really made anything close to Chess game standards. Considering the fact there are so many freeware Chess games of better quality, I can't really recommend it to anyone. Mark 3/10.

I play a lot of chess, there's something nice about the simplicity of 3D chess. The background noise has a pleasant calming effect that seems to boost your concentration, & the pieces & the backgrounds are easy on the eyes. I like that we are allowed to contribute our own puzzles, & the developers are quite friendly & seem genuinely interested in everyone's feedback. I own Fritz for fun, and I can't stand the headache it gives me from the myriad of meaningless features. 3D chess is basic & beautiful & it gets the job done.

Some say it is chess. I am not able to agree with that statement as you are forced to take queen when promoting pawn. That is not according to chess rules. Additionally "avoid check" puzzles are mostly only doable as computer is not even trying to give you check. On other hand "give check" puzzles are so easy it is not worth to go there. Plus for "checkmate" puzzles some of them need deep gaming knowledge. In general, it is not bad game, it is just not very good. In 90 % off promotion and a puzzle a day game it could be worth. Do I regret buying it, no as it was cheap.

- Only 3 difficulties & the hardest is easy to beat. - Online is dead. - Mediocre graphics, lighting, boards/pieces and limited viewing angles of the board typically make it less clear to see what's going on at a glance than it could be. You can only choose a set of predifined views or rotate the board sideways. - User created workshop puzzles are a very cool idea, but it's dead and barely anything has been uploaded. - Official puzzles are too few and too easy. Conclusion - Too expensive for what it is. Either use a free chess program or buy something better. This is too limited in features for the price.

As a player who loves chess a lot, I can easily say this game is completely trash. Gameplay is horrible in so many aspects: 1- Even the hardest AI plays like an average amateur who blunders randomly in a mid-game. Broken. 2- Challenges are so meaningless, most of them are not interesting at all like there's a whole page of 'Avoid Check' and all you have to do is not letting AI checks you. It may sound unique at first but when you get the control, you realize the problem immediately because AI DOESN'T EVEN TRY TO CHECK YOU and completely plays like it does in a random game. Most of the time you find yourself moving pieces randomly and still passing the challenge. 3- I haven't personally experienced this but some people reported that when they're playing in 2D mode, every time opponent makes a move the game switches to 3D, just an annoying glitch. And even without the gameplay, game is still a fail since graphics are not good and 3D mode is not smooth enough.

I did not imagine it was possible to write such a horrid chess game. First, the puzzles: "set check" and "Avoid check" in some cases have multiple-move solutions, but the AI doesn't know what your goal is, and does not defend against/attack with check to make the problem remotely difficult (except in one or two cases where its checks happen to be checkmates). I have not yet tried the set checkmate; I suspect that will be more challenging. Second, the AI overall. If the "Hard" AI is rated over 1000, I'm a master. (I am rated 1570 or so USCF). It moved its queen about 5 straight times starting from move three, pausing only to play Bb4+ while its queen was threatened and my pawn was still on c2. I played c3, forcing Bxc3 bxc3 and THEN it played Qxg2 to save the queen -- which it could have done instead of losing its bishop. The game was over within 30 moves, and only because I got so sidetracked taking the queen instead of just developing and checkmating. Third, the sliding of pieces is frequently not smooth, and sometimes pieces just disappear while being dragged -- they may, when the mouse is released, be put back on their start square, or on another legal target square that the mouse was nowhere near. Fourth, I saw a forum thread where the computer "escaped" checkmate, by ignoring the rules of chess, because apparently whoever programmed the game didn't know that a king attacked by a piece that is pinned to its own king is, in fact, still in check. This bug has supposedly been fixed, but are you SERIOUS? I got this game 85% off -- for $1.49 -- and I still feel ripped off.

Really average Chess game, there's plenty of others you can get on your phone or on Steam that are better than this. For Completionists, it's pretty straight-forward. You do need a Partner for one of the achievements though.

Wow, this really is a mixed bag. It has some terrible elements and some really good ones. I am going to try to be fair here but there is not a lot of content and it does not take long to 100% it. (3 hours) Start with how it ranks as a chess opponent. Pretty poor if you have played any serious chess but if you play serious chess you already know about proper chess sites and chess programs. You certainly do not go to Steam to buy a product when you can just play for free on a dedicated site with master level advice and a dedicated community. Okay, so let us assume you did not come to this game for lessons in how to develop your burgeoning chess skills. You just want a nice casual game of chess. It does that. Online play? Could not get a game. Well, if I wanted that I could play one of the other chess games I have on Steam or just go to a .com site that specialises in Chess, like I said. Ease of use? Hmm, there are some really awkward parts to it. It can be difficult to move a piece sometimes since it wants you to follow a precise vector when you do. Wait, so it doesn't play chess well, you cannot get a game against people and it is clumsy? Why on earth am I still recommending it? Well, before I get to what clinched it as something positive, a little more bad I am afraid. The achievements - totally unimaginative, almost entirely based around the puzzles. So really, it is a chess puzzle game with some limited chess play tagged on. The puzzles. These are split into 3 sections - "Check your opponent" (What? That is a puzzle?), "Avoid check" (Where the AI does not attempt anything like best play - to force a check, I would be sacrificing a queen as the AI, but no.) The last one is slightly better - Checkmate. Some of the checkmate puzzles are genuinely tricky and in places elegant. There are some nice background options and if you set things properly, you can play a topdown retro chess icon board, which I tend to. For all that the game is called 3d chess, this is not that enticing when you cannot see some pieces properly. What have I actually said so far that is positive? That it does provide a casual game for people who are not that serious about chess, it has some nice background settings and some nice Checkmate problems. Why, then why? Why positive. Well, after a lot of words we come down to it. Workshop. Submit your own puzzles. This feature is really excellent. I do not need another chess game, I have played so many and have so many but this is quite special. Sure it is only a minor feature to most but this is not an expensive game and the workshop is an integral part of the Steam experience. Short version: get this to make Workshop items and be creative. Get it for easy achievements if you like that. Just do not get it for games of chess and please, please wait for a sale or a coupon.

Overall -- very good but still a great deal of work is necessary (really a lot). The application freezes pretty often so that's a problem numero uno. Not sure if it's the video card I have but fairly certain I am not the only one and it's a great turn off. Next on the list is fixing some of the arenas as far as lighting conditions (it's difficult to tell which piece is which when all you see are shadows). After that you should enable user to observe the board from an almost arbitrary angle. It can be a challenge as you would have to render the sky etc but even without it, a greater freedom of rotation is necessary, at least so that a player can get to see the board from the top vantage point in 3d mode (you have 2d mode but then the pieces lose 3d rendering which defeats the purpose). For your 2d, make sure to diversify the set of pieces you make available (the ones you have in 2d, which is really only one, are fine but there should be more with emphasis on 3d-ishness and appropriate light/shadow rendering). Increase the set of difficulty modes available (not good enough to just have 3 modes). Preferably to have the modes with ELO designations (i.e. I am playing a 2300 ELO computer opponent says a lot more than 'hard'). Lastly (or in parallel with all of the above), let's keep adding those excellent arenas which is really what this game is all about -- let's focus on boards and pieces with lots of reflection (marble-glass themes etc), lighting effects (fire is very good) -- this would make this game unique in the marketplace.

!!!!! RUNS ON MAC OS 10.15 !!!! steam said the game would not run on my current version of mac os, the game description said runs on 10.8, whatever future os that is. I am currently running it on my macbook pro retina 13-inch 2013. There is some lag here and there but 100% playable. It might not be the best chess game out there but for 10 bucks I am not going to return it. Currently in quarantine and just finished playing a game with my dad who is miles away. You can easily invite your steam friends to a game. Once in game you can switch between 2d and 3d modes (3d mode was a tad laggy on my mac), in 3d mode you can pick between a bunch of different backgrounds... its cute. This is the only 3d chess game that I could find that works on mac and pc, not counting tabletop simulator...ex. _ The chess pieces are 3d + The game runs on pc and on mac + Play online with your steam friends easily = 100% worth $10

Yeah...no. 2nd game against easy AI, the AI went to take my rook that was protected by a knight with it's king, basically moving itself into a check position, gave itself a check.....

Playing this on a Mac well over the specs is painful. Movement of pieces stalls and is sometimes undoable and the fan hits the roof after a few minutes making the poor computer sound like jet planing ready for take off. The game engine could also do with some re-work. In version 2.0.2 the Chesspedia states that making 50 moves without taking an enemy piece will end the game in remi. Doing well over 50 moves where the AI comes to the same conclusion since I move the piece back doesn't result in anything but the same positions being reached over and over. Being just a casual chess player I don't minde the AI not being super advanced and I cannot comment on any other features than Player vs Comp since the two things pointed out above made the game less than enjoyable.

Cute game with pretty graphics, but limited camera angles and limited difficulties make this not worth the money. I found the that it does not live up to the hype, all flash, no substance.

Not too much to review here. Typical chess game, Allows for some scenarios such as mate in a limited amount of moves. Also some screen customization. It's chess. an in depth review isn't going to really happen here.

No controller support. That is a MUST for a chess game! come on! and DUEL controller support is also a must. Who wants to pass a controller back and forth? let alone a keyboard/mouse! Get duel controller support and I'll revisit this review... (maybe) as for now. unimpressed! Check vs. Mate has done it right! Sorry but, yeah.

Well, I knew that what I was getting wasn't something great, still I feel like I should convey to you what I feel about this game. First of all, A.I. isn't good, I mean I didn't try out the hardest level yet, but most of the times A.I. goes for checking you all the time which results in you doing the same move over 20 times until you decide to give up and let it have it its way. It also doesn't help that there are only 4 difficulty levels, could be more considering even most of the net based chess modules have more choices. Besides those major problems? Yeah, I would say that A.I. is pretty solid, though I am no expert. Interface feels unpolished and something out of a cheapy ass unity store game. Encylopedia doesn't have much of an information about anything and could use a rework. There are many skins and enviroments to be used within the game, they are pretty nice, although I use the 2D mod, I gotta say that Minecraft alike skin looks really nice. Although there is a global scoreboard, you can't see your own personal stats, I think they could have added something where you can see some unrelated stuff about you, like how much your matches usually take, what is your favourite openings etc. Especially when online chess websites like lichess do that for free. There are only 4 languages that you can pick, which is really disappointing, since there is not much written text within the game, hell, I would translate this game to Turkish for free if they asked. There is chaos mod, which is pretty cool to be honest, I don't know if this is a common thing since I am pretty with how I play chess. The mod is simply about the one who gets checked loses. Might not be for you, but I personally liked it. You can also play some scenarios where you gotta A) check an opponent in certain number of turns, B) Check mate an opponent in certain number of turns C) or prevent getting checkmaded in certain number of turns. I wouldn't buy this game unless you want a chess game that you can play while offline, which is exactly why I bought it.

Well, i its indeed a 3D chess, but that's all. It has some puzzles or challenges, but they are not too hard for a regular player. The hardest IA is not too hard for a regular player too, with a few rounds of practice you can beat it. And the pieces movement is very buggy. It has something interesting that is the workshop feature that enables player to make puzzles and share with other.

This game is a complete disappointment to me: I just wanted to buy a classic chess game, but this game has many errors: 1) Imagine this: enemy bishop is threatening your rook (which is in front of your King) Then, this rook protects a pawn 2) Then, how th, can the enemy king just capture this pawn????? It is protected by the rook, even in a discovered check (or however this is called). Also, in each difficulty level, the game always starts in exactly the same opening, which becomes a bit boring after a while.

I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.
