Short but challenging game, theres about total of 3 levels but if you beat it, you didnt beat it entirely. Though this game is really hard to beat, it gets easier when you get that frog hat. Which can help you can pretty much all of the achievements and get you the real ending. Which you can get frog hat by feeding bullets to the frog.
Its a fair challenge honestly, but I beaten this game like around 30 minutes so that tells you how short it is.

Very short and sweet game about a man who has only one bullet, and has to progress downwards by shooting and picking up his bullet. It's a unique concept and plays really well, worth the price!

Fast, unfair, infuriating, plain awesome. If you are into Enter the Gungeon or Nuclear Thrones, this is a must have.

Fun & beautiful arcade game, but really short for the price it's asking. I Hope they add more stuff to it because the base mechanics are really cool.
Ps: I hate you speedy maggot >:(

Gutwhale is a 2D rougelike game, where you clearing floors in a... gut of whale, with a gun and one bullet, which you need to pick up everytime, if you shot it.
I like the bizarre environment, which the game lets us to play in it. It's weird and there is no logic in it, but looks simple enough and not too bad. The gameplay is also somewhat addicting, however for me it wasn't quite working, but for others who I know quite liked it. You collect points, which you can use to buy upgrades at the end of the floor, which you can reach if you clear 4 levels, on every level a new enemy will appear. Complete 3 floors in a row with 4-4 levels, and you finished the game basically. Of course, you can complete challenges and unlock secrets, too. It's not easy, you will definitely need time to complete it, but it's doable. The controls are easy to get into, the jumping mechanics are quite interesting, but you can get use to it, however for me the keyboard controls are quite painful for my hands after some time.
I would like to enjoy this game, but for me it wasn't quite interesting. I like the rouge like element of the game, but it just feels too weird in general to play, has no meaning or goal in general. The music and sound is not bad, but more poor. I even don't notice the music, it just not that interesting or attention grabbing, some sounds are quite scary to listen to for the first time.
To be honest, I tried to like this game, but I couldn't. It's a cheap indie game, which has quite an audience, but sadly it's not for me. I can't really recommend the game, maybe get it under 2€ if you are really interested, but buy it, if you like what you see in the trailer only.

my playtime isn't counted because of time spent playing the game offline, but i don't even think its possible to put more than an hour into this game if you're playing at the intended pace. you have a gameplay loop that can completed in under 2 minutes, that is static, doesn't change, no gameplay or modifiers in anyway. it mechanically wise is quite similar to the original rogue, but rogue has more variations between runs than this game.
i beat this game, got every in game achievement, in about 30 minutes.
I like stuffed wombat, as a person, but as a developer he's the definition of mid, and this game is somehow more than just mid, it is graining to play in a way that gives off no specific feeling, neither negative or positive.
I feel no joy, just undiagnosed mental illness in my head spurring off the anger bones i have just wanting to give this game a chance. This is hardly a roguelite, hardly a game that should be sold.
Hopefully qomp is better.
(game is too quirky for me, stuffed wombat should give into that scopecreep because while the games are very sharp, very melodic in it's gameplay decisions, they are simply too short and have little variation. It's very good at one thing, and everything else kinda faulters)
i wish there was a way to have fullscreen but a lower ingame resolution, since i absolutely hate seeing pixel art being rotated at a high resolution makes it look unnatural, atleast sockpop games are at a lower resolution so it's all still grounded.
should be priced at 99 cents like one of those 10mg games, since it literally can be completed in ten minutes time with all achievements.

This game is really cool I just wish there was more because like. This concept is really good. But I like the achievements and the true ending and the secret mode at the end so I guess that exists. I heart arcade shooters.

I love this game but there's just not enough content. even a bad player can 100% this game in under 2 hours. a good player could have maybe 40 minutes before getting bored.
concept and execution are are great, really, I mean that. I love the art style, music, gameplay, everything really.
How i feel about this game is basically this:
Imagine Binding of Isaac but it's only the first floor and theres a total of 10 items. Pretty disappointing, huh?

Downwell + heavy bullets with flash game DNA in it.
I probably haven't discovered all its secrets, but this was a nice little game now that i finally got around to playing it.
(I did beat it in an hour, but mostly because I've got fast game brainrot)
Is good, get it if you like supporting small inde devs and interesting games

Gutwhale is crunchy, juicy, and dense. The intense action is complemented by a pounding soundtrack and bizarre gameplay. Jam-packed with content, it’s the epitome of a short but sweet experience.

"Gutwhale" is a nice and frantic little micro-action-roguelike with a unique bullet-catching mechanic that can be beaten in under a minute. You probably won't at the first few tries though, for the controls are a little floaty - something that you first have to get into. The design choices are grotesquely weird and wonderful, so give it a try!
A nice and short experience with a serene secret ending, obtained when you go for all the achievements in game (had to look this up first, but it is worth the completion run!).

Surreal little treat that doesn't overstay its welcome, as it can be beaten in less than a couple hours. If you think that's not worth the five dollars, wait for a sale and perhaps check out the dev's newer titles.

Finished it 100% in around 40 minutes. Was fun. However, I insist that it is not worth 5 bucks. Only get it at a steep discount (around 1 dollar or equivalent).

very simple game with a great design. if you liked downwell and gonner, this game is not too far from it. one downside is that it feels like an itch.io game that you would normally get for free, but the creators of the game already make plenty of free games on stuffed wombat's newgrounds account anyway, so you can also just get this game to support the creators.

Cool idea, but the lack of configurable controls really gets to me. I don't want to have to hold up to shoot down, I don't want to use X for fire (when the game often asks you to press space as a confirmation), and I'd rather have a jump button. Also, it makes sense for the enemy design, but I hate games where you can aim in every direction but up.
This isn't a review saying "this game is bad" as much as "I want to like this but my pet peeves were pressed."

Disclaimer: My scores/reviews are almost always based on having bought the game at close to the "lowest historical price" on steam at time of purchase.
Quick score: 5/5
Notes: Bizarre, fast paced, short, simple, challenging, extremely fun.
It is not a roguelite in the typical sense of having a million different variables and options. Its basically just a score attack arcade game with a couple roguelite'esque sprinkles on top.
Its kind of like "Downwell", but even a bit more simplified than that game.
Only thing that sucks is that there aren't any achievements as goals to aim for, so to really get any playtime out of it you need to be able to set your own personal goals, something I'm not usually able to do with games.

Awesome gameplay, art and soundtrack, but the game is extremely short (I've finished in 40 minutes).
The idea of the game could have been better used.

Short and intense action. Really loving the atmosphere of the game. It's tough but very fair, gives enough opportunities to influence risk and reward.
Would make a great arcade game with its combo mechanic, would just need an endless mode with highscores.

This game is fine. It plays well and it elegantly accomplishes what it set out to do. But I can't recommend a game at a $5 price point for a less-than-one-hour experience from beginning to full completion. Given the amount of work that was probably put into it that may be a *fair* price point, but relative to the value-proposition of steam games in general that just means it can't be recommended.

Tiny, neat action game. Reminded me of games like Gonner, Downwell, and Nuclear Throne. The core concept is very basic - you fight through up to 12 single-screen rooms containing 1-4 enemies; you can only carry a single bullet; and almost everything dies in a single hit, including you. All this is well-executed, both mechanically and aesthetically.
My favorite design aspects were the nigh-instantaneous respawn speed that made for a "just one more run" feeling which I loved in Super Meat Boy, and a quite forgiving combo system. I ignore combo systems in bullet hell games because they demand perfection and seem tuned to only cater to the best players in those games, but here the system crucially was lenient enough that I could enjoy it, too.
Ultimately, this is not a big game - I saw pretty much all the game had to offer in ~2 hours of playtime - but for this price, I consider it a great deal in terms of value per time.

I really enjoyed this bite sized game, I love how quick it is to get back into a session.
Also the second to second game play is fun so restarting doesn't feel boring at all.
Happy to see where this game goes in the future!

What an absolute treat.
If you liked Gonner, Downwell, or Super Crate Box, get this one immediately.
It looks nice, feels good to play and has the most fun I've ever seen a game have with its achievements system.
Just what you need to spend an hour or so.

You know Rick and Morty? In this you play Jerry. This is a Jerry Smith Simulator. You will feel stupid and just when you think you've got a handle on the situation you will be thrown what you think is a curve ball. It's not a curve ball. It's just your stupid Jerry brain.

I am only early into the game, but so far I love it. Unique mechanics and great visuals. Will update again after I have sunk some hours on this.
After spending some more time on this. I am giving this a strong recommendation. A perfect for short bursts of time. I am actually enjoying more than Exit the Gungeon.

Gutwhale is one of those kinds of games that are simple yet super fun to play and replay, yes it could use a little bit of polish but overall is great timewaster and once you even fully finish the game realizing the story of the game you will get that feeling of acomplisment and wanting more.
I mean you can beat this game in less than 2 minutes once you master the game. And I think for such a small price this game is beyond worth that much. I can tell the obvious inspiration it got and the idea behind the game is so well done its just worth replaying it every now and then.
Here are some small nit picks about the game
PROS:
- Easy to learn, hard to master
- Simple controls and mechanics
- HATS!
- Variation of enemies each with unique strategies and mechanics.
- Good for a short brake if you want something quick
CONS:
- Maybe a bit too short for my taste
- Requires a little polish
Overall Gutwhale is a great game, its short yes, but is it fun? HECK YES!
Gutwhale: The Rotten Truth
A short but intense indie game.
Gameplay
The gameplay is simple enough, shoot the enemies. You start with one bullet that you must collect once shot. You have to clear four 'rooms' on each level. Each room starts with one enemy and increases by one each room. There are 3 'levels' in total.
At the end of each 'level' you can collect an extra boost, such as an extra bullet or hearts.
Although challenging, once you've beaten it a few times it becomes very simplistic, even with the unlock-able hats that add a different element.
There are 5 different in game achievements to unlock what gives you access to the ending with credits.
Overall somewhat challenging but very repetitive gameplay.
Graphics
Yup it has some. Basic pixel art what works well in this type of game, but very simplistic.
Sound
It has one soundtrack that loops itself when you have to restart a run when you die. It would be great if it just carried on as the looping can get very annoying.
Story
You're in the gut of a rotting whale that is flying through the sky. Do with that what you will.
5/10
Overall a great little time waster. You probably wont get more than a couple of hours out of it, but for the price it's worth it. Especially if you can grab it on sale.

Fun, but extremely short.
I beat the game in half an hour (including the definite ending mentioned in the description).
There is also no randomization to help with its replayability.
I think this game has a very solid foundation, but it needs to be longer to accomodate more experienced players who can breeze through the only three levels.
Barring that, random items instead of having only 2 hats you can purchase throughout a run would make it a better value.
I would really love to recommend it due to the great mechanics, but I have to stop short due to the length.

Although the visuals, audio and gameplay are pleasant, I can't help but feel like this game should've had more content. I was through with the entire game in about 25 minutes. Even for the modest price of $5, I still feel like my money could've been better spent.

I believe there was a tutorial but I accidentally skipped it, regardless, I learned how to handle things in about 15 minutes.
I beat the last stage with about 70 minutes of playtime, but I will definitely play more! The sound and visuals are incredible!
I just wish the game could be stretched a little longer. The team should return to this game once their current project is finished.

Fun game with an interesting shoot mechanic. Controls (specifically shooting downward) was frustrating at first, but after playing aggressively and getting used to the "float" feels pretty good. The enemies are different enough from each other that just a glance of the room lets me know what/how I have to approach each enemy. The bullet juggle score was nice as well since I always prioritized being aggressive and trying to take out everything quickly.
It's a nice game where I know I'll get better and doesn't demand me to play for 10+ hours to meet arbitrary objectives.

Gutwhale is a short but sweet game.
It doesn't last too long but the gameplay is very unique. It has a very claustrophobic and intense feel to it. I really hope this game gets expanded in the form of updates or a new game because there is a ton of potential in this.
