It's not a rogue-lite in the way you "DO MORE RUNS!" because the game itself is too slow for that. It's more of a "Oh, I get these new things that make it interesting if I decide to try again" game. Give it a whirl if you like low-end tactics games that introduce a small amount of rogue-lite stuff thrown in Update at nearly 50hrs: I really like the combat of this game. The one minute bar and trying to eek out more seconds so you can stagger enemies is awesome. I haven't used all the classes, but I feel they offer a solid mix of the trinity of tank, healer, and dps so that runs are unique, but familiar. It's a solid game. I just wish it wasn't so slow. Everything takes way too long. One game, for me at least, take HOURS to complete and I feel that you need to dedicate too much time for minor rewards. I want to unlock every progeny, but I can't fathom how long I'd have to grind out relationships to do that. Even with a "fast-forward" aspect to the combat you're slogging through each encounter. I feel that this game could've been an awesome Tactics RPG, even if it has a paper-thin story, because you have a solid foundation for each system. However, the "rogue-lite" loop breaks these systems in a way that makes it feel too grindy. I still recommend this game because I think it's rewarding overcoming your first playthrough, but after that.... I don't think it works well enough to want to see everything it has to offer.

Too difficult for me to enjoy. The progression felt so harsh, idk why some dev does this, but they kept limiting the amount of direct improvement you can get via repeated runs. You only get minor buffs and some new characters. That's it. The game is all about your runs, but there's not much permanent stuff that complements it. Will take gazillions of hours just to get better, which is not fun.

I love this combat system, even when the turn is stacked against you there is usually a path out of doom. I never really did the harder difficulties and had a great time working my way up to the final superboss, which was still incredibly difficult. if you like turn based games in any form you shouldn't pass on trying this out.

The story element behind how the characters restart is fantastic sci-fi, and the deterministic combat system makes for some really satisfying planning/executing. Definitely worth a try

Star Renegades is that amazing tail wagging scratch for that side-scroll itch.... perfect for a 45 min run. With the ability to pause and leave and save. its perfect to come back to at any time. I recommend this to everyone.

I would really like to recommend Star Renegades but I can't. It's definitely enjoyable to some extent but it's also a slog to play through. Once again, Steam needs a 'neutral' vote. Star Renegades has a lot of good ideas executed in a mediocre fashion: Combat is tedious, slow and it becomes difficult to interpret the results of the 'prediction bar' or whatever it's called really fast as it often feels like it is failing in doing proper calculations. The most grievious offense is introducing enemies that attack twice and therefore completely bypass the prediction system and it's a lot like someone punching you in the face during a game of chess and quickly moving some pieces around. Fun? Nope. Fair? Nope. The game is also very flashy (as in seizure-inducing) and has a habit of throwing silly blurbs at you that read like a bunch of angsty teenagers sat in a smelly room together and came up with 'rad' stuff they saw somewhere on a TV show. In between fights you'll move around being frustrated by the lack of proper pathfinding and wondering why on earth they didn't just copy the map from Slay the Spire. It's not like you need to make any choices so it's all just time-consuming fluff. Instead, if they wanted meaningful navigation, they should have had a look at Roguebook which does it well. The same goes for the camp at the end of every fight where you can use playcards to heal or imbue other bonuses on your team mates. This will also result in starting relationships but the catch is that when a game starts over, you lose all your progress and start from scratch! However, you can unlock new teammates by having 'progeny' through this process. I don't think it's a horrible Roguelike. It's un to play but you'll constantly battling the interface and wondering why they're so bent on taking your precious time away from you. We have a saying that loosely translated goes something like "it's better to steal something and implement it properly than come up with something implemented poorly" which I really think should have been the developers' guiding principle here. Missed opportunity.

Beautiful but repetitive and hard as fuck, i dont want to loose two times in a row against the same first boss to have some upgrades in the base.

Honestly I love turn based strategy, and the break system, if you can manage it, is so satisfying.

It is a turn based rougelite, your goal is to get to the end and fight the boss. The combat has a "break" system where attacking before the enemy counts as a critical and pushes the enemy onwards, until it throws them off the "turnline" if pushed enough. Balancing that is the whole game, then you get armor, shields, damage types, etc. ROBUST is the keyword. The combat works, the rougelike nature works because you assemble your team and make it work every run. It all "clicks". Its extremely captivating. That being said, you will hear about the UI. "How can a UI be THAT bad, everyone is complaining about that?" yes, look up a screenshot. You cant see how much life you are going to take off them because the damage type stacks become a giant tower of red UI boxes that says your damage type in giant letters that cover the enemy, so you are both moving the mouse around to try and actually click, while missing all of the important information. This starts harmless, a bit cumbersome, and by the end, where every turn is an actual chess match in itself, and every little bit of info need to be known, calculated and reacted on, it becomes the main thing you think about. I've never seen something like it, like having the best museum exposition ever, but you are forced to use giant VR glasses that will show you at all times the map of the museum, covering the actual art. That being said, I've not had this much fun with a turn based RPG, rouge or not, since I can remember. Absolutely captivating, gorgeous pixel art, and a fantastick battle system that scales in complexity but lever looses focus. All behind giant fucking black boxes that inform you of things you don't care about, hiding crucial info. What a game. Fully recommended. Fix the god damn ui, I'd laugh at the irony if it didn't make me loose my shit in a 80 minute long run.
