It's not terrible, but it's very short and maybe even mildly annoying (RNG sucks, too many combinations of pieces and effects). It doesn't have a "difficulty" option, but it's relatively easy and I finished in the second run. I bought this in a bundle with a small discount and had forgotten about it until today. Not worth the sticker price (~11 CHF, I paid ~8.8 CHF), but would be decent with a steep discount, I guess. Then again, I'm probably not the target demographic. And being short is not an issue in itself. If this specific game was twice as long, I'd probably have dropped it even faster. There is an infinite mode, I think. I didn't like the game enough to try, but if you do like games such as these, maybe all of my minuses will be pluses for you.

It's just... not fun. Too many caveats, random piece functions, and limitations that are imposed onto you, but not the enemy. Like why am I playing against a piece that has the movement of all vanilla chess pieces, while all I have is a piece that can move like a king with one more space lol. Even at 1900 elo on lichess, this just isn't fun, nor does it use any chess principles really.

As an avid chess player, this is great. However, it has some issues I found after completing it the first time. I couldn't see myself playing this for too much longer, because while it's fun and could have replayability, the execution of the roguelite is missing something at end game. So, you go through stages of having upgrades, improvements, new pieces etc. Eventually you beat the final boss, and then you can decide to continue infinite mode....except it's a very boring infinite mode because you can no longer get upgrades, spend your gold, recruit new units etc. You just keep playing till you lose. An infinite mode for this game should keep you on a procedural generated or random map I feel, with upgrades, recruit, sacrificial altars etc. I would have loved to see a way to expand you roster size too, in infinite mode. Ultimately I think it doesn't offer too much incentive to replay it, unlike the developer's other game Gods vs Horrors.
