So, think Street Fighter if it was made for people who like an anime art style. It isn't an anime fighter, there are no airdashes, mix is kind of basic and while combos can get quite long, that's about as close as it gets to your Guilty Gears and Blazblues.
Granblue Fantasy Versus is a fighting game made for a gacha game, and Rising is the upgraded version of the original Versus, with rollback netcode and some updates to the formula.
This game has one button specials, for the people who that matters for, though you can do the regular inputs for pretty much no benefit besides comfort. Character movesets are quite unique and frequently come with significant gimmicks that you need to keep in mind, and damage is for the most part on the low to middling range, though TODs and 70%+ combos can be achieved in rare situations or by certain characters with plenty of meter to spare.
There is a block button, though it's not necessary to use besides for its 'Dodge' function, as there is also a universal unblockable option that costs a secondary resource; the punishment for losing which is taking additional damage, and getting hit by this unblockable option, getting hit by supers, or using the 'get off me' button will use this secondary resource. If you lose all of this resource, the high damage combos get significantly easier and a lot of characters will likely be able to 1 touch you by that point in the round. You'll need to get used to using the block button for the purpose of using the dodge and avoiding that.
It's neat, it's a bit gimmicky, and if you feel like playing Gran and only Gran, you can get the game for free. The Free edition also has a rotation of characters for you to try out each week or every two weeks (i don't remember).
Otherwise, it goes on sale for reasonably cheap at times. It's a solid fighter, but not something I'd play competitively, even if it does have a competitive side to it and is fairly balanced. It also doubles as being one of the easier fighters on the market, if you can't convince people to get their journey started in something like Blazblue or earlier Guilty Gears than Strive.

This is an anime fighting game that I want everyone to know about and play a lot. The lobby currently has around 70-80 people, which still feels insufficient. However, most of the high-ranking people in this community are kind and share information about how to play each character in a friendly manner. I like it a lot.

Decently fun but I do not recommend playing it seriously, I like playing it casually because I like the world and the characters but in top level gameplay the game looks kind of boring, I REALLY like fighting games and the animations are really cool in this game but eventually, the game just gets boring because the combat and types of moves get repetitive. Playing casually with a friend and experimenting with the different characters and moves is really fun because of the over the top sick animations, I still like the game but I cant play it for to long. 6/10

Super underrated fighting game with a ton of personality and character variety, I wish other fighting games had the same reward systems as this one does. 🐑🐑🐑

Can't really comment on it compares with other fighters on complexity, but I've really been enjoying playing this with only passing interest in the Granblue IP (Completing Relink and playing around in the mobile game for a bit). Would definitely recommend if you are interested in getting into fighting games.

GBVSR is really fun fighting game with a lot of content and characters.
Cygames does a great job with supporting the game, the matchmaking is fast and reliable (yes, it does have rollback netcode.), and they're constantly releasing new unlockable content and characters.

Getting achievement is easy, except the second rare one. Where you need to level up Grand Bruise until lvl 50. Go grind this game mode first, because its got lack of player. My suggestion, play at night either NA or Japan time. At least you got some player there
We got Grand Bluise EoS first before gacha game itself

Believe in Victory. Fight.
Even if you get stomped by experienced players, S++ to Masters, get rushed by Soriz, Touched by Avatar Belial, hugged by Ladiva, poked by Sandy or whatever, its a fun learning experience, just have to git gud. Can be frustrating at times ofc but once you start learning em, its more fun.
Queuing for Grand Bruise can be a pain sometimes though, just have to wait for specific times or sometimes there's error.
10/10 would want to get bodied again just to learn. (Especially by Masters/ Grandmasters)
Galleon can grab me as many times for all I care, I'd be more than happy to.
This is the only FG game I've ever really gotten into after all the years, very first even, considering I've only played a few that I liked ages ago which is GGXrdRev2, UMVC3, and TTT2, but didn't really spend so much time into it and I didn't know anything related to FG. Just having fun playing with school friends. Got roped into this game by that very same friend and everything is history.

I had sworn off fighting games for decades, the last being the like of Shin Budokai 1&2, Tekken 3-6, and Street Fighter 3-4. I haven't really touched them since, the exception being Skull Girls, which I played casually with friends for not even 20 hours. Why?
Didn't like the direction these games were going, got bored with the genre, and sometimes the mindset that I didn't pay for blocking. Regardless, I avoided them like the plague until a friend convinced me and another to give it a shot. It's on sale, it looks fun, good friends play it, why not?
I was surprised. Easy to get into with a great amount of depth, *mostly* balanced and varied characters, a friendly and based community, and all that with a good netcode (don't play on wifi, it's not just as good, use a cable).
I sunk over 40 hours into this game within 3 weeks while spending likely as much time researching tech, tricks, and combos for my main (one of the 7 Percy players worldwide). Ranked up to A5 so far with the intention of going for S or higher at least.
The initial price if not on a sale is a bit steep imo, and while the game originates from a GACHA, everything is acquirable within the game without paying another cent.
TLDR: It's a good game, no matter if you're a disgruntled veteran giving the genre another chance or a newcomer to fighting games. Get it on sale or find it another way for cheap, you won't regret it.

It's fun but lowkey dying. Probably due to the 'easy' fighting game model combined with new players still losing to better players. This game is good but kind of complicated in a good way I recommend it but there is some BS you'll get screwed by.

Juegardo.

Game is horrible as a new player, through a week of trying I was unable to find matches against similiarly skilled opponents. Can't even try the Grand Bruise mode because noone plays it.
Combat feels very sluggish coming from other fighters and the inability to dash macro backwards but dash forwards feels incredibly unnatural.
Aside from the generally bad experience even attempting to get into the game, the cast feels very underwhelming with only a few standouts since the game's mechanics are incredibly homogenous.
5/10
If you dedicate the time this can certainly be fun but the barrier is simply too high and for me personally it didn't feel like I would be rewarded for putting my time into a game with a seemingly low playerbase.

How to begin this?
The game is fine as a game.
If you have friends who play this, or want to play the solo story mode against CPUs, or just watch a bunch of neat characters interact, then go wild.
The game is fun when it's just you, or just you and your friends.
If you already like the game, I implore you to stop reading and move on. I am going to be very rude to this game, because I have had a consistently negative experience with it.
The cracks don't start to show until you play with strangers, and at that point it's clear they're a dime a dozen.
The depth in this game is deceptive in that I honestly can't tell if it's as deep as the ocean or as shallow as a thimble. Everybody I encountered, from newbies with fewer than 5 matches under their belts, to people who definitely should not have been in the casual queue with thousands of matches, were using the exact same tactics. The only difference was how well they executed them.
Matchups are even more disparate than in most fighting games. Picking certain characters means that you just will not win a game of skill against certain other characters, the counters are just that hard.
The roster is balanced so terribly that I honestly wonder if this was a joke of some sort.
All the problems I have with the game boil down into one of the following categories: Ease of learning, clashing mechanics, and the community.
Ease of Learning: Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising is deceptively easy to learn. Deceptive in that you haven't actually learned it once you've "learned it".
Combos aren't something the game really cares to teach you, and with the exception of the highest difficulty of CPU, the game doesn't care to use them against you.
Make no mistake: Everyone you play against will use combos. I saw people fresh out of training mode landing full combos on me.
The game will simply not tell you most of what makes or breaks a match. You have to either learn it from a friend, or by getting stomped into the pavement for hours on end.
The game will also never explain certain mechanics, such as Armor, unless you play a character who has that mechanic.
Clashing Mechanics: The sheer number of redundant inputs and mechanics is enough to make me scream, but what's even worse is what gets redundancy, and what's missing.
There is no Burst in this fighting game. There is simply no way to get the other character off you. If you're in a combo, you are staying in that combo.
And yet there's directional block and a block button, because apparently we need two ways to do the same thing.
On the earlier topic of combos, this game features a limited autocombo system. While at close range, all your main attack buttons will suffice to do 3 hit combo. You can change how it ends by holding forward and pressing medium or heavy at the end, but that's about it.
The window on combos is also very small, and there's a very generous invulnerability window when getting up, landing, or even just because the game feels like it.
This leads to a small selection of combos working perfectly, and there being almost no room to experiment.
The Community: I'm new to fighting games overall, so I'll keep this brief. To be very blunt, I am beyond tired of being locked into 20+ hit combos for whiffing a single attack in CASUAL. I think the godsweats should go to ranked where they belong, and matchmaking should take into account win/loss ratio and overall number of matches completed rather than whatever arcane system calls an S+ player the "same skill" as the D rank player that I know I am.
I would feel inclined to just play with my friends and never touch the public side of the game, but you are so disincentivized from playing with friends that I have to wonder if private lobbies were something the devs were forced to add at gunpoint.
You literally get a 10th the character EXP from winning a match in a lobby you made as losing a public match.
Not to mention Arcade Mode doesn't care what difficulty you're playing on, and a full clear doesn't even reach the EXP gain of losing a public match.
I appreciate that you can get everything in the game by playing it for long enough.
Why is the game so against letting you do that by yourself?

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising builds upon the solid foundation of its predecessor by delivering an even more polished, visually stunning, and mechanically engaging fighting game experience. Developed by Arc System Works and Cygames, this sequel not only expands the roster of beloved characters from the popular Granblue Fantasy universe but also introduces refined gameplay mechanics, enhanced customization options, and a robust suite of modes that cater to both competitive players and casual fans. The game succeeds in balancing accessibility with depth, making it an inviting entry point for newcomers while offering strategic complexity for veterans of the genre.
At its core, Versus: Rising retains the vibrant anime-inspired art style that defines the Granblue Fantasy franchise, showcasing exquisitely detailed character models, fluid animations, and dynamic special effects that bring each fighter’s unique abilities to life. The stages are beautifully crafted, featuring rich backgrounds and interactive elements that complement the fast-paced combat without distracting from the action. The game’s soundtrack, featuring epic orchestral scores and character themes, further elevates the overall experience, immersing players in the fantasy world even during intense battles.
Combat in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is a harmonious blend of accessible controls and intricate mechanics. The game offers a smooth combo system that encourages creativity, with each character boasting distinct movesets that reflect their personalities and fighting styles. New to Rising are refined mechanics such as enhanced movement options, updated special attacks, and improved defensive techniques, which add layers of strategy and make matches more dynamic and engaging. The inclusion of intuitive inputs allows beginners to perform flashy moves easily, while the depth of combo potential and frame data rewards dedicated players who invest time mastering their chosen fighters.
One of the standout features of Versus: Rising is its expanded roster, featuring fan favorites and new additions from the Granblue Fantasy universe. Each character is meticulously balanced to ensure competitive fairness while retaining their unique flavor, and the diversity in playstyles—from agile rushdown fighters to heavy-hitting zoners—provides ample choice to suit different preferences. This diversity encourages experimentation and keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting across multiple sessions.
The game’s modes cater to a wide audience, including a comprehensive story mode that weaves a narrative connecting the characters and setting, offering a satisfying single-player experience beyond the core fighting gameplay. The training and tutorial modes are thorough and well-designed, guiding newcomers through the basics while offering advanced tips to help improve their skills. Online multiplayer features are robust, with ranked and casual matches, lobbies, and spectator options that support a thriving competitive community. Netcode improvements ensure smooth and responsive online play, which is critical for a fighting game’s longevity.
While Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising excels in many areas, it may still present a slight learning curve for players unfamiliar with fighting games, particularly when it comes to mastering the timing and execution of advanced techniques. Additionally, some players might find the story mode’s pacing somewhat slow compared to the high-octane action of the core combat. However, these minor drawbacks are outweighed by the game’s overall polish, engaging gameplay, and vibrant presentation.
In conclusion, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is a stellar evolution of the franchise’s fighting game series, offering a compelling blend of beautiful aesthetics, refined mechanics, and rich content that appeals to a broad spectrum of players. Its thoughtful balance of accessibility and depth, combined with a diverse and well-balanced roster, ensures hours of exciting gameplay whether you’re climbing the competitive ranks or enjoying the story-driven single-player modes. For fans of anime-style fighters and the Granblue Fantasy universe alike, Versus: Rising stands as a must-play title that continues to raise the bar for the genre.

Cool game to start fightings I think. Yeah not really much people play, but the the people are nice in discord communities, so if you liked demo they will help you and there actually are players in all elo it's not only steam players, here it's crossplay. So have fun, don't overcomplicate the wins and losses, play for fun, make a combo that's wacky, troll people and then win. They will hate you... But do you care?

Definitely the fighting game that makes the most sense for someone trying to get into fighting games. Each button and each special has a clear purpose, obvious when to use them, and systems aren't punishing or convoluted. It's still got a high skill ceiling so you should be able to enjoy it.

I saw Arc System and remembered the fun I had playing Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. As a Millia main I was not disappointed. Replace one half of the cast for Millia and the other half for Elphelt and you get Granblue. There is no bigger joy than learning to play against Elphelt and so in this game there are 29 (yes I counted) different Elphelts to maximize your enjoyment! And no, A. Belial does not count. Oh sorry, did I say half?
Edit: For those who did not play Guilty Gear Strive (which I wholeheartedly recommend):
Millia is known for being brutally difficult to play. She either plays a perfect round or dies on first mistake turning away all but the most masochistic players.
Elphelt is notorious for entering an infinite combo (which is laughably easy to perform) every time she lands a hit even when blocked rightfully earning her the title of the most hated matchup in game.
I hate this game. But I love it. Very fun, but sometimes I have really bad issues. Might just be my controller though, so this part of the review is useless.
Very accessible. Great fighting game to be your first, (this is my first fighting game, so you can trust me). When I'm not fighting my controller, it feels very skill based, and I feel like I win when I deserve it and lose when I deserve it. Almost all characters are really well balanced.
Not Nier though.
I'm sorry Nier.

So, let me start off by saying that I am well-versed in fighting games. I have played them competitively, meaning at a high-level, for almost 20 years. I've even beaten professionals.
I say all of that to let you know that I have an apt understanding of fighting games and their intricacies. As we know fighting games have a huge skill barrier for entry to really be able to play them properly and get consistent wins.
This being the case I'll get started on my review. I played a bit of VS and didn't like it. I decided to buy Rising when it was on sale and I'm very glad I made the investment. This game is very robust in its content and has a pretty high presentation quality.
I don't know anything about the anime or the story. Let's make that clear. If you're playing fighting games at a high level you rarely see people that know anything about the character lore or story. This is purely a review based off of gameplay and first impressions as I only have about 15 hours into it.
So, this game is very basic but that is a compliment. Games like Street Fighter 6 are overloaded with powerful game mechanics that take away from player skill. This game you basically have a Guard Breaking mechanic and a Mechanic Reversal. That's about it in terms of basic system mechanics....disregarding any unique mechanic for a characters unique ability like a separate gauge for something.
This game is mostly about frame traps and hit confirms and that's a good thing. You have to EARN those things. So basically it's a more footsies based anime fighter. There are probably SOME advanced techniques like the Block-Sway OS for example, but this game seems minimal when it comes to messy things like that. I should mention Classic and Modern inputs too.
I have played the early level players. They mostly button mash the chain-combos and jump a lot as you'd expect. Raw Supers, wake up buttons, etc. I have also fought and beaten S, S+, S++, and Master players and to be honest they are BETTER of course but even they seem to have some bad habits like I just listed. They do pull off advanced techniques such as resets, shimmies, and so on though. The point is, I think this game isn't really "like that" when it comes to a hugely competitive playerbase. Only the very small percentage of players that have played for the past 5 years. Steam Charts usually shows about 700 players online where as a game like Street Fighter 6 has thousands. On the other hand a game like DNF Duel has like 7 people online. Rising is competitive enough for me though and refreshing to be without the stress.
Chain combos, 2 Supers, a few special moves, neutral play, anti airs, zoning, and before you know it the round is over. This is a bit more of a grounded anime fighter. DNF Duel is too but even that game was akin to say, MVC without the Tag in a sense that it's nonstop pressure into a combo, reset, another combo, dead. This game is not really about that type of nonsense.
As for the product itself it is outstanding. Bunch of different modes, combo trials, excellent artwork, excellent graphics, tons of items to buy from Character Costumes, Colors, Weapon aesthetics, Avatars, and art for your Profile card. All of that with 36 characters currently, a active (enough) playerbase, easy gameplay, good online play, and this is a wonderful product. I think it's worth every penny even for the Season Pass I got too.
The only downside is the monetization system, as is typical for games these days. You have to buy the Character Pass for characters and separately a Battle Pass more so for Extra Trinkets. The Battle Pass gives you "access" to earn said-Trinkets but not the Trinkets themselves. You can though PAY EVEN MORE to buy all of the Items that are in the Battle Pass to skip earning. Again, typical stupid micro transactions.
My final thoughts are that this is a great introduction to fighters but also should satisfy Vets that want a more fun experience rather than a stressful one. I give this game an 7/10.
Statistics update:
So, to give a better explanation about competitive play I decided to revisit this review several hours later. It took me 49 matches and about one day to reach S Rank. I would say S Rank is the starting-point of pseudo high level competitive play. This Rank Tier allows for demotion and I don't believe you can get a win streak bonus anymore from what I've read. All Ranks previous you couldn't get demoted, apparently.
I say all of this to say that this game caters to Casuals and Competitive players. It takes so little time to reach S rank that you could use the broad selection of characters at a Novice Level and reach S or you could pick a Main and continue to climb S into Master. Still, this game I think is very straightforward and basic. It's a little too forgiving with loss punishments and most of the playerbase's skill level is pretty low-- until you reach S and then you're playing against the same 12 Pro Players you always see at a tournament on a YouTube Stream. I'm exaggerating, of course but once you reach S you reach players with thousands of matches that have been playing for the past 5 years. At that point don't expect to win without grueling training for a long time...like most fighters.
My opinion on this game is still the same positive score I gave previous. It's good for me at this point when I just want to take a break and have more fun with a fighter...and it not have to be a illegitimate Arena Fighter.
By the way the CPU is terrible. Definitely focus more on playing with friends online if you can. That's a given though. Happy fighting.

I can't express how much I love this game. When I played as Siegfried, immediately I thought "this is it... I found it". What did I find, you ask? I mean that cool, calm, collected, epic, sword-wielding, dragon-slaying knight we all desire to be at some point in our lives. I've tried so many fighting games, so many beat-em-ups looking for that sensation, and I kept feeling like "ooh, close, but not close enough" 99% of the time, and this game shows up and does it spectacularly.
As an artist and fellow UE5 user, I cannot sing enough praises of this game's visuals. It's an exquisite banquet (if you like cel shaded anime visuals, of course) for the eyes. This game -- in my honest opinion -- encapsulates what anime should look like when animated in full 3D. Anime houses should seriously look into Arcsys' system and jot down every pointer they can get. Arcsys have perfected their groundbreaking technique. But the thing is, the way they marry visual artistry with responsive gameplay mechanics and an astronomical level of style and coolness just makes this game basically perfect in my eyes. Like many others in this review section, I cannot be any more proud to recommend this fighting game to anyone that has been looking to see what the fighting game scene is all about. It's accessible but deep if you get into the intricate combo system.
Anyway, I don't see a point in giving this a score when I consider it perfect. This will be the game I fall back on on the daily when I feel the swordsman in me wanting to feel the rush of being one of the coolest, dragon-slaying swordsmen in video games, lol.

Despite being a fighting game based on a gatcha franchise, it is very well made in terms of the balance and combat. It is Street Fighter 6, but anime and a *bit* less footsies depending on your character, but there is no high low mix unless you play a few specific characters. They have a very good diversity throughout the cast, both in character design AND in gameplay. Very easy to learn, as there are only a max of 4 specials per character (there are technically a few exceptions but bite me) so combos aren't incredibly difficult to structure, while still being interesting and not fully bland. I myself have 4 master rank characters and 13 or so S++ characters, as picking up and playing other characters is really easy and fun once you are good at the base game mechanics.

Graphics are great, tutorials are incredible, voice work is great, and there are reasons to keep playing like dailies and weeklies as well as battle passes if you're into it. Also a fantastic game to get into as a new fighting game player. One of the best overall fighting game packages.

Visually its awsome....like really awsome. Combos seems powerfull on every character in there own way and theres enough that i had a blast just to test them all.
Performance is on the go even with a patato PC. Im already thinking going competition . A GOOD 8.5/ 10 or 9/10. Worth the price tag for sure.
