The stupid shit you can do in the lobbies is immediately worth the price of admission! Also the game is surprisingly good from a core mechanics perspective!

This is great. Even though I like games with more complex combos and more complexity like the Guilty Gear series, I really enjoy not having to think about inputs as much and focus on the tactics itself. Please join the fun.

Fantastic game. The inputs are very simple and easy to approach for new players. despite the homogeneous inputs and relatively small move lists, each character feels unique and has their own identity to bring to the table. The game is free, with a weekly rotating cast of 5 characters you can play, with Gran always being available. Every character is *technically* available to buy with earnable in-game currency, but this would take literaly years on constant grinding to do and is not a realistic option for F2P players. Of course you can buy the full game to gain access to every base-game character instantly. Once you have a grasp of the basic controls, you can pretty much work out ~90% optimal combos for most of the cast. For some people this is a plus, for some this is a minus. There is less combo variety compared to other fighters, but there is room for some combo expression for optimals or due to screen position, or your current cooldown / meter. Graphics are simple, but do their job well. The game isn't bursting with style, but it's readable and the characters themselves are all distinct and interesting. Great variety of music, with every character having their own theme, plus unlockable music tracks through the in-game store (purchasble with earnable in-game currency), and battle pass rewards. The sound design in match is good, with consistent sounds across characters for supers / ultimate skills to make certain attacks reactable. You have the option of either English or Japanese voices, both are fine, though personally I lean towards Japanese due to some annoying English battle chatter (Cagliostro, Charlotta). I have no trouble finding matches online in ranked or in lobbys (NA). Though I've heard this is region dependant, with OCE and EU having trouble in off-peak hours. Though the game generally feels very good even with high ping (max ~200) so changing region can be an option to help find matches. The training mode is robust, with frame data, combo trials, recordable dummys, punish training all available. You can't, however, train with or against characters that you don't own, so no labbing against characters unless you own them. Arcade mode is pretty standard, there are a few secret bosses to fight if certain requirements are fulfilled during your run. ArcSys added a pretty fun survival mode, you have 100 total rounds to beat with unlockable random perks every 5 rounds to help you through the trial. Grand Bruise is an interesting Fall Guys clone, I only played it once but it's a fun option for those that are interested. I've heard that games can be very hard to find and you may need to join the Discord to find the specific time that people agreeed to play to find a good match. Lobby mode is cute, you control a small chibi avatar, with chat abd arcade machines to find matches against anyone regardless of rank. There's a little bit of exploration to be done in the lobby, but it's mostly just a place to chill between matches. I haven't touched the single player, so I will not comment on this. Overall it's my current favourite fighting game with good balance between characters, frequent patches to change things up, good variety of things to do, high quality gameplay and netcode. Low skill floor but still has a relatively high skill ceiling for those willing to put in the work. 8.5/10

(This is assuming Deluxe Edition is on deep discount) Decent fighter, lots of characters, active playerbase, daily/weekly rewards to help maintain interest. Mechanics take getting used to if you're from traditional fighters, but are simple enough that you'll acclimate quick. Good training mode, relatively even playing field. Pretty good community. Hard to pick a main and secondary, probably end up learning to use everyone at least a little. It's not deep and complex, so don't expect a combo game or anything that lets you get creative. Memorize the one or two best combinations of moves per situation and focus more on defense - VERY defensive game. You can get by just fine in casual matches and have fun, but anyone who bothers to learn the flow of combat will reward themselves a lot. It's not BlazBlue or old Guilty Gear, but it didn't try to be. Just don't buy it full price. It isn't worth full price.

Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising is a masterpiece not of flashing lights, but of measured style, refined mechanics, and soulful design. Its combat system is deeply elegant—each strike, dodge, and clash feels deliberate, echoing the tension of a true duel. This is not the romance of landscapes, but the romance of men and warriors. It embodies the forgotten nobility of battle—the kind fought not for cruelty, but for glory, principle, and pride. The gameplay is a dance of conviction, blending accessibility with depth. Its mechanics reward clarity and timing, not button mashing. Whether you wield magic, sword, or martial fists—every character feels handcrafted, each style breathing with its own rhythm. And above all, the game is stylish, but never shallow. Graceful without being gaudy. Flashy, yet dignified. A modern duel, steeped in classical spirit. A true gem—crafted for warriors who fight not just to win, but to express. 10/10.

It's a really fun game to play with especially with people like me who just want to try out a fighting game, its a plus if you know the gbf universe, you will enjoy it more, anyways, I really advise folks who want to pick up a fighting game to buy this one, especially now its on sale, its worth it, I even bought the dlc because It's worth supporting the devs for making this game still alive and kicking, good job to the devs, keep up the good work!

This game is basically Street Fighter 6—but better. It's more dynamic, more fluid, and features a cast of characters that anime and manga fans will absolutely love. The soundtrack is a solid 10/10, and the visual design is just as impressive. Of course, this is just my personal take, but artistically, the game really stands out. Gameplay-wise, it follows the golden rule: easy to pick up, hard to master. If you're looking to improve and dominate through dedication, this game absolutely rewards that kind of effort. I highly recommend it—especially now, with only a handful of fighting games actively thriving, this one really deserves your attention.

I was moments away from refunding this one thinking it was too simplistic. Something told me to stick with it, and I'm glad I did. It's definitely on the simpler side of things compared to the older Guilty Gear games, or Blazblue, but what it does do, it does so damn well. Normally I hate games that feel like they prioritise beginners over veteran players but I think here the whole game is crafted around that ease of use, rather than stripping back core mechanics of an existing game to make it less execution heavy, as we saw with Strive. I think this is a really well made game. And the character design is just... ::chef's kiss:: My main gripe is that with the excessive server connect time, sometimes it feels like my old ZX Spectrum games loaded faster. But, everything else about GFV:R is absolutely fantastic, I love it!

This game has a shit ton of content yet for some reason its not as popular as it SHOULD be. All the characters have fun gimmicks. Even basic characters like gran are still fun to play. The game has a story mode, good multiplayer and a bunch of other stuff. I'm so lost on how this game is so overlooked

Definitely the fighting game that makes the most sense for someone trying to get into fighting games. Each button and each special has a clear purpose, obvious when to use them, and systems aren't punishing or convoluted. It's still got a high skill ceiling so you should be able to enjoy it.

So, think Street Fighter if it was made for people who like an anime art style. It isn't an anime fighter, there are no airdashes, mix is kind of basic and while combos can get quite long, that's about as close as it gets to your Guilty Gears and Blazblues. Granblue Fantasy Versus is a fighting game made for a gacha game, and Rising is the upgraded version of the original Versus, with rollback netcode and some updates to the formula. This game has one button specials, for the people who that matters for, though you can do the regular inputs for pretty much no benefit besides comfort. Character movesets are quite unique and frequently come with significant gimmicks that you need to keep in mind, and damage is for the most part on the low to middling range, though TODs and 70%+ combos can be achieved in rare situations or by certain characters with plenty of meter to spare. There is a block button, though it's not necessary to use besides for its 'Dodge' function, as there is also a universal unblockable option that costs a secondary resource; the punishment for losing which is taking additional damage, and getting hit by this unblockable option, getting hit by supers, or using the 'get off me' button will use this secondary resource. If you lose all of this resource, the high damage combos get significantly easier and a lot of characters will likely be able to 1 touch you by that point in the round. You'll need to get used to using the block button for the purpose of using the dodge and avoiding that. It's neat, it's a bit gimmicky, and if you feel like playing Gran and only Gran, you can get the game for free. The Free edition also has a rotation of characters for you to try out each week or every two weeks (i don't remember). Otherwise, it goes on sale for reasonably cheap at times. It's a solid fighter, but not something I'd play competitively, even if it does have a competitive side to it and is fairly balanced. It also doubles as being one of the easier fighters on the market, if you can't convince people to get their journey started in something like Blazblue or earlier Guilty Gears than Strive.

It's funny and infuriating how bad Strive is when ArcSys has current games like Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising, Under Night 2 and Melty Blood Type Lumina. Genuinely don't understand why more people aren't playing this instead.

If you only care about Granblue Fantasy's Versus games, then this review isn't for you and you can just assume I recommend it instead. I, however, love GBF and try to get everything I can from the series. And while Versus: Rising looks great, I can't recommend it with a clear conscience knowing it doesn't bring everything other versions of the game for other platforms do and the store page fails to mention this. Many players, especially those who play the mobile game, expect to receive the supposedly included codes for things like free costumes or character rolls when they buy the game, on top of the fun Versus: Rising offers. But due to Steam's return policy, the game doesn't include any codes; Steam could easily fix this by mailing out codes 15 days after purchase, once they confirm the game hasn't been returned, but I guess that option is out of the table.

The game has been quite easy to pick up as someone that has never played fighting games. A lot of cool and interesting characters to play. Kinda dead in OCE and playing in other regions is extremely laggy but joining a community to play isn't so bad.

God awful ui, casual play filled with bots farming character levels, pointless cooldowns and built in streamlined controls and special inputs that needlessly bloat the control scheme and force higher level players to use block buttons to eliminate the threat of cross-ups and dp buttons to nullify any potential smart old school balancing of these strong anti-airs by making them not instant but still intuitive for anyone who isn't a slobbering ret#rd coming from a gacha to this similarly monetized 66 dollar "fighting game" Is it just the wave now to forcefully inject all of these mechanics that clash as violently as possible with fundemental fg design concepts that have existed for decades before this new wave of uber-accessability for good reason? I came into this with zero knowledge of how the game functioned but after some online matches training and tutorials i can tell this is not a game for anyone who has even any need to escape from the garbage pile selection of modern populated fgs like i did when i picked it up. Might as well have just stayed with tekken because theyre both as streamlined and scummy as each other. Long story short, go play virtua fighter 5 :)

2500 people online, that's only the PC population at the time of writing, not to mention crossplay and I get matched against the same 3 people two days in a row. Either the matchmaking in ranked is utterly broken or the entire playerbase is doing anything except playing the actual game. Really fun experience. (Not allowing the grappler to do his command throw off a 270 but forcing a 360 input is comedy gold)

I went into this expecting a crazy anime fighter, but it ended up playing a lot more like a Street Fighter game than I had expected. There's a lot more focus on the neutral compared to something like Guilty Gear, or Blazblue. The game mechanics and characters are easy to understand, but still have enough complexity to keep things interesting.

GBVSR in a nutshell: [*] The game is an upgrade from GBVR. If you're wondering on which has value, this one definitely is the best version. [*] It has a simple inputs for beginners but also allows technical inputs for fighting game enthusiasts [*] Yes, you can do long string combos and juggle your opponent if you know what you're doing, though mostly it would have a more poking gameplay than an aggressive brawl. [*] Visuals and audio are also great of course, if you haven't heard their rendition of Nier Automata's "Weight of The World" you're seriously missing out. Fighting with that in the background feels like some insert song to a final battle. [*] There're a lot of characters in the roster with all sorts of gimmick but their kit makes them similar to one another in a way. Most characters would have one or two range skills, an anti-air or DP, and some sort of dash attack. This makes every character familiar in their own way so you can experiment with which character you wanna use. Of course some characters are harder to master than others, the game also outright tells you that on the select screen. [*] There're a lot of gamemodes like Arcade, a comprehensive story mode, online lobby for casual match and mini games, Survival, and a Fall Guys like gamemode. [*] An actively creative community *wink* *wink* Cons: [*] The AI even at nightmare isn't really challenging. I wished they brought back DNF Duel's AI but I guess it's better than the original GBVS's AI which was worse. [*] Battlepass... I get the idea but in the first place the prizes are shit. I don't care about character swords that much or badges. They release costumes with every new season but come on... you have to buy the battle pass and grind until level 100 to get it, and after two years there are literally only 8 costumes (as of ver 2.10) , and you can buy them as DLC anyways (if they release it) so really unless you wanted some swords, color palates, and badges there're literally no other incentive to do them. They really need to make more content for this game and I think the players would have more engagement. [*] Despite crossplay, the ranked matchmaking is really bad. I play on Asia server so I don't know about JP and NA but finding a match is really slow for me. When I do they have a bad connection or just doesn't accept the match. This makes beginners of the game who wants to increase their rank unable to rank up. Although I'd say the netcode rollback is great, not much delay even in around 100-200ms but it doesn't help when there are no players for the gane. [*] The biggest disappointment for me is the Grand Bruise minigame the one that's like fall guys, and one of the main reason I'm buying this game, doesn't have enough players to actually form a match. I don't care if it's bots at least let me play with what I have man... Verdict: Well put together fighting game but lacks the content to incentivize players to keep playing. Especially considering that this game is meant for new entrants to the genre, there's really no reason for them to stay playing if you don't like fighting games in the first place. For those that do though, they can have fun with the character variety that's easy to approach but has depth to master.

One of the most accessible fighting games I've had the pleasure to ever play. Granblue Fantasy Verses reeks of style and has a very strong art direction thanks to it's long-running gacha game, Granblue Fantasy. It's colorful cast of playable characters, includes many fan-favorites and 2B from Nier: Automata. My first introduction into the FGC was with the release of Super Street Fighter 4 when I was in high school. It was during the renaissance of fighting games where many beloved franchises were coming back and new games were beginning to find their footing. GBFVR is a very polished game that builds on years of experience that the community and developer Arc System Works have poured into making fighting games better. My only regret is that I didn't start playing sooner. As of writing, we're half-way into 2025 and the game is still being supported along with new character releasing into early 2026. We're only in Season 2, so I expect the game to have it's player base for a little while longer judging by how many characters other Arc System games like Guilty Gear has. It's just speculation on my end, I'm still really new to the community. As for gameplay, I really like the idea of having both SIMPLE and TECHNICAL inputs as an option. I think the simple input option is great for new players since it doesn't immediately scare them off. Technical inputs expand your options and creates that high skill ceiling for more motivated players. I think if you're familiar with fighting games you'll quickly realize how limiting the simple inputs are. I think they work really well as an introduction to the game and maybe even "training wheels" for players who are new to fighting games in general. I really like this idea a lot. There are daily/weekly challenges that you can do to unlock stuff for your player profile and collectibles. There's also a mini-game mode that's similar to Fall Guys. It's cute and you get some goodies in there too. Highly recommend getting this game if you like anime fighters or if you just happen to like anime-looking games and are in the mood to try a fighting game out for the first time.

One of the most beautiful fighting games out there. The visuals are excellent and the soundtrack is out of this world. The game is also very welcoming since the combos and mechanics are quite easy to learn, but the depth definitely is there for seasoned fighting game players. This is the perfect place to get into fighting games or Granblue, making this title a very worthwhile experience. As an added bonus 2B is in the game as well so long as you buy the DLC. Originally got this game since she was in it, but the game proved itself time and time again to be an excellent fighting game.

This game is awesome. Low skill ceiling high skill floor seems like an apt description. This is my first fighting game and I've gotten to S rank (around/below 50th percentile) pretty quickly (My thing says 72 hours played but like 30 hrs are afk). I saw that someone said "this game simplifies inputs and emphasizes the tactics/strategy that define fighting games" and that really seems to be my experience. Losing almost always feels like my fault, and almost every loss leaves me with something tangible to improve. You only need simple combos to win through most of the beginner experience, and this game seems to be the easiest game to hit combos in. IF YOU'RE STRUGGLING, SWITCH TO DJEETA (or Gran I guess). Djeeta has all of the tools that you need to be able to respond to pretty much any threat. She has two jump attacks that combo really easily AND super reliable anti-air with good damage if you're willing to invest BP. Her pressure is crazy, her buttons are good, her skills are good, Rekka punishes mashing which is a scrub killer, DP does DP things. Switching to Djeeta didn't make me better because of my character, it made me a better fighting game player. Block feels really good in this game. Raging Strike makes combos really easy outside of the corners and Brave Counter means you can get your turn back even when you don't understand your opponents pressure/combos. Anti-air is king in this game, but at low ranks people do NOT anti-air enough, so learn how to punish unblocked aerials. Modern controls feel so good but I like technical inputs for my SBA/SSBA's.

Having played through Granblue Fantasy Versus I was a bit concerned about the release of rising. The game looked exactly the same with some editions but while that is true to a certain extent, this game is really special. They've added many characters and so many little things that make the game really enjoyable and while the fighting game genre is flooded and over-saturated with expensive and big names, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising has found a spot in my rotation. I seem to often comeback in this game to unlock things or learn new characters. The online is very fun and the story while simplistic gameplay wise is more then what many larger and bigger brands fail to create. The online lobby is well made and the amount of voice acting is really impressive. I think the graphics and art style will hold up in the future. My only complaint is that the coin system seems a little busted. It takes a very, very long time to get coins unless your doing dailies or monthlies. I think it takes a way a bit from an otherwise perfect game.

I love all things granblue fantasy I played Versus on PS4 back when it was new. I was kind of let don when it did really have any traction in the west and wasn't even present at EVO. which basically made the game DOA. but ARC was able to breath new life into with a better net code and more characters. Anime styled 2d fighter akin to street fighter and mortal kombat with anime esque moves, based on an rpg on the phone that's now been remade for steam, tons of characters to choose from, it can be pretty fast paced, there's an rpg mode(I haven't even tried as of writing this) a survival mode, unlockable weapons, skins, characters, and colours, (though most of those, are priced so you'll spend actual money on them rather then grinding for waaaaaaaay too long) but still fun game, 9/10
