Pretty fun DLC, interesting idea but implementation looks pretty basic. As if it was left at the initial stage (like MANY things in this game, it completely lacks complexity, as if it was a demo for many other sorts of games).
The idea: there are three new levels where you can fight waves of monsters, and build defense installations to help you, all with the goal of protecting the core. There are 5 waves of monsters, 5 groups per wave, a few monsters in each group (five?). Each level has several spots for monsters to spawn (switching from one spot to the next after a wave or two), they follow a fixed predetermined route, you can place towers in specific places that are supposed to do some damage to monsters. At the end you fight a boss and receive extra rewards for optional objectives.
Problem - mode is extremely basic:
- all (five?) defence towers cost the SAME amount of resources (20)
- resources are extremely limited, you get between 5 and 8 towers in a level (approximately)
- towers are so damn weak they can barely kill the lowest tier of monster, at best (which makes them practically useless)
- you cannot modify the arena... in a tower defense game mode, in a builder game you cannot modify the path monsters will take in any way... missed opportunity many times over, if you ask me
- in the last level there are TWO crystals to defend! But you end up defending one and the other is just for show... but if you die, you'll respawn at the far crystal and spend the next minute crawling to the one that is actually being attacked... you still crawl slowly in this game mode. I haven't tried using a ride, they make moving around MUCH faster but they're not available in rifts so why would they work here?
- "final" level boss completely lack balance with nearly one hit kill damage (but only because I invested into health heavily with my rogue... which was a waste of class because this boss has no elemental weakness... I think, I just threw some bombs at him which took most of his health away)
The mode is somewhat fun and adds some variety to the gameplay, but is extremely limited. If there were, like, 10 properly balanced maps with towers that did a reasonable amount of damage (could actually kill some monsters), more monsters per wave, like 20-30 waves I'd consider it an attempt at tower defense mode. As is, it is just an extra, worth a few dollars, IMO.
Oh, and this also adds "furfolk" - new race where your face has more facial hair... and that's it. But at least it was more than just different shape of ears.
There's also new "druid" class, but, personally, I found it pretty boring attempt at combining warrior with... something else? IMO, it excels at nothing really. It can transform into other monsters, which reuse existing monster attacks, replacing your weapons and adding extra health. Some monsters have ranged attacks. I couldn't figure out whether this is a good class or bad class since I personally found it pretty damn BORING.
Extra furniture looks nice, although quite similar to the previous addon. Extra mounts are also a nice touch, if a little grindy (400k coints, replay the last level, like, 10 times).
Do I regret the purchase? No.
Would I buy it again? No. I'd say it's nice if you already have the main game, like it and want more of it. But it's definitely not necessary to enjoy the main game.
