This game definitely shows it age. Lots of backtracking, unbalanced gameplay and co-op mode, repeating enemy types, but you can very clearly see how revolutionary this game was in the shooter genre. Despite its age, the game’s humor stands out, it’s gameplay was addicting, and its comic book art-style was nice to look at. Borderlands walked so every subsequent looter shooter could run. To touch on the story, I felt very intrigued by the Vault and the underlying lore, but I wasn’t given much. By the end, I was left scratching my head as to what really just happened, but the base is there. I understand why the sequels were more successful. Co-op is one of the main features of this game and was very revolutionary at the time, but I didn’t feel very incentivized to participate in co-op. When you play with somebody else, all enemies get stronger to compensate, but if the other players have a lower level than the host, they have no chance of being any help. For the host, the enemies get stronger, but your support is too weak properly deal with them, so overall co-op just wasn’t balanced. Despite this, I had a great time with this game. It may have overstayed its welcome, but I’ll remember it. 100% Achievement Completion Perspective: So incredibly tedious to 100%, not only are there a few achievements that require grinding for a large number of rare items, but there are a few achievements that require three sessions of 5+ hours to complete arena challenges that you cannot save during. These I dub “unemployed-only achievements”. They weren’t even that fun to complete. Also, there are many co-op related achievements and there weren’t that many people playing while I was playing, but I got lucky and found some people to help. Save yourself the trouble and don’t 100% this one.

Humorous game creators! I love every bit of the story, so far. The weapons are interesting due to all the different elements, rarities, and the skill trees make it even more dynamic. Still playing in 2025

Don't buy Take-Two and 2K games until they change their EULA. If you already own the games you should leave negative reviews. The corporations will only change their policies when they start losing money.

Just a timeless classic that's just good fun. The Enhanced edition brings some much needed quality of life changes, although there is a change your game can be infected with a memory leak. There are ways to get around it though, and if you can, this is a vast upgrade over the original GOTY version.

You made a game where the villains are evil corporate goons. Then you became evil corporate goons. I say no to spyware. You've gone too far.

I'm disappointed with this game cause I thought it would be as fun as Borderlands 2. This feels like an errand game, it's very boring. My boyfriend could join me but his game was non stop lagging, despite having a way better PC than me. After a quick Google search, we discovered it's a very common problem when trying to play coop. The host doesn't lag, but the joiners do. Play Borderlands 2 instead, it's nothing like this!

I don't know where to start with my review of this game. I probably went overboard with my idea of what "100%" means in the context of a Borderlands game, but I will say that I went out of my way to complete all quests on Playthroughs 1 and 2 for all four characters. This is supposedly how Borderlands games are meant to be played with their emphasis on replayability and encouraging you to try out all the characters. This game was an absolute nightmare to complete. I guess the first problem I have with this game is the level design. It seems rather stupid to criticize the areas you explore in a game that is literally set in the desert, since it should be expected that the locations will be barren wastelands. However, I was really surprised by just how dull and same-y every area feels. The few exceptions to the bland level design come in the form of a snowy area that you reach near the end of the main story and only spend a short while traversing. The music does not make anything better as it is very lowkey and doesn't change depending on whether you are in combat. I got so tired with the music after my first full playthrough that I just had it turned off for all remaining runs. Next, I can talk about combat and weapon systems. I'm pretty sure that in this game's marketing, it boasts the fact that there are millions of unique weapons that you can come across via searching chests and killing enemies. It is a good idea in theory, but in practice I did not find that many cool weapons to replace existing ones that I was already using during my playthroughs. So, oftentimes I would be sticking with the same set of weapons for large chunks of the game. Digging deeper into the weapons system, there are eight types of weapons in the game, along with grenades. I would probably say, from my experience, the only "good" weapon types are revolvers, shotguns, and submachine guns. Even then, the "good" weapons are finicky. Sniper rifles in this game are a complete joke with the horrible flinching that occurs when you get hit by enemies, and my recollection is that there are no skills in any skill tree that address the flinching. Rocket launchers half the time miss the target even when you aim at their feet. The Eridian weapons are dreadful and take forever to recharge their shots, making them effectively useless. Enemies in this game are varied, which I actually do really appreciate, and the ones that wield weapons can all have unique weapons. However, I have to talk about how terrible the Crimson Lance are. They are very annoying bullet sponges that can destroy you in a few shots. Possibly the worst type of them all is the one that carries a physical shield because they have horrible head hitboxes. The Eridian guardian enemies are pretty creative but have terrible hitboxes as well. Now, I can briefly talk about the characters you play as. You have four characters to choose from; Mordecai, who has a pet bird named Bloodwing that you can sic on to enemies; Roland, who has an automated turret; Lilith, who is a "Siren" that can go invisible and run very fast; and Brick, who has a "berserk" melee ability. The character I probably enjoyed playing as the most was Lilith, as it felt like she could actually deal with enemies pretty effectively. The other three felt oddly weak to play as. On the subject of characters, there are a lot of forgettable characters in this game. "Bosses" have no real weight to them and often just look like normal enemies. The supposed main antagonist of the main story, Commandant Steele, has very limited voice lines and you don't even fight her in the story. Only a few allies in this game are memorable and come back in later installments in the Borderlands series. The story of the game is pretty simple, your band of "vault hunters" is looking for "The Vault" which is rumored to hold many treasures. On the way to it, you fight through hordes of bandits, private military forces employed by the big weapon manufacturers, and alien creatures. Quests in the main game can be very tedious, but not quite as tedious as some that you find in the DLCs. The DLCs for this game are all around pretty boring and/or frustrating. The General Knoxx campaign is maybe not as boring, but it is very aggravating as it is centered on the Crimson Lance. This expansion is the only one to include driving, and actually adds some much needed variety to the vehicles. With that said, it is a particularly annoying DLC as you are forced to drive on long roads to get to different areas because there are no fast travel stations. In fact, there are NO fast travel stations in ANY of the DLCs, aside from the one at the beginning of each of them which are meant to get back to the main campaign areas. Back to General Knoxx, the quests that you find towards the end are the worst offenders as they have you farming enemies with no ability to make progress on other quests. This DLC also has the worst arena in the entire game, the Circle of Duty. I don't know how anybody is supposed to complete the Circle of Duty solo with the staggering number of Crimson Lance enemies the game throws at you, so I had to cheat to get this questline done. This DLC introduces the "raid boss" which is a staple of the franchise. Also terrible. Moving on to the other DLCs, there is the Underdome. The Underdome is an arena run by Mad Moxxi which has you fighting waves of increasingly stronger enemies with modifiers that change up the playstyle. Also terrible. There is the Zombie Island of Dr. Ned DLC, which is just really dull and is a product of a time that was dominated by zombies in entertainment. Contains an annoying fetch quest where you collect brains. Just play the Left 4 Dead games, really. Lastly, there is the Claptrap DLC which is probably the most enjoyable one, for what little that means. This DLC has you fighting forces of brainwashed people and creatures under the influence of Claptrap, who is staging a revolution on Pandora. It's actually pretty funny, creative, and has some good references. Contains an annoying fetch quest where you collect robot parts. Also has a really tanky final boss. I want to close off my review of this game by noting that it also has some sort of memory leak that starts to destroy your frames after you travel between areas in the game too many times. So on top of the laundry list of problems I have mentioned, there is lack of optimization as well. If you want to play a good Borderlands game, play literally any of this game's successors. You will be doing yourself a favor.

Great childhood game but replaying now god it hasn't aged well for me. Any sort of plot is pretty bland you could just chill and get the general idea of what's happening. The looter shooter concept is pretty basic which wasn't bad for the time. I personally enjoyed the gun play as well. Overall I'd recommend for a chill 20hrs or so of fun. Now my main complaint being the DLCS are not great. Moxxi's Underdome bigger challenges are just unnecessarily long and annoying. While the other three are tedious and boring. None of them have fast travel between zones making for some annoying backtracking and overall they're just not interesting or entertaining enough. Not to mention the horrible achievements grinding for rng drops if that matters to you. Best just to play through quickly once. Overall I'd love to recommend this game out of nostalgia and I probably would if you were planning to play the rest.

I mean cmon dude it's a classic. Maybe not as good as Borderlands 2, but still definitely a great game. Gearbox was still doing very cool stuff in this era, and basically invented the looter shooter. Even better if you can find three friends to play through it with you.

For a game that was released in 2009, this title has aged very well. The game play loop is fun and addictive, despite the story being weak. The biggest con for me is the vast area of maps to cover to complete and get to objectives. It means a lot of time just getting from one place to another. With BL4 on the horizon, I wanted to get as much done as I could in the series. This one really is a lot of fun and provides some reference for the lore that gets very deep as the series progresses. It's worth checking out if you haven't already.

This is probably my third playthrough of this game, I got a physical copy for PlayStation around its release and now I have a copy on steam. The game still holds up to this day of being fun, with incredible storylines and ridiculous humor. Replaying this after all the other games reconnects so many jokes, so many characters. Still in love with this game many years later.

Played this game with my girlfriend on a co-op server and unfortunately, the lag was pretty severe and hard to ignore. We tried a few YouTube tutorials to troubleshoot, but nothing really worked. Our only option was to keep leaving and rejoining the server, which got frustrating fast. That said, some of the game's core mechanics still hold up surprisingly well, especially considering its age. It's clear there's a solid foundation here, but the experience definitely suffers due to performance issues in co-op. I still recommend it if you are going to play solo.

The original Borderlands will always have a special place in my heart. I originally played this game on the PS3. The concept of an FPS RPG with random loot blew my mind back in the day. The gunplay has certainly not aged perfectly well, but I think the atmosphere, the aesthetics, and the overall experience still hold up as their own unique thing. The Enhanced edition updates the engine for more modern PCs, as well as improving the menus and adding some other minor QoL changes here and there. But it's still very much the exact same game. If you don't mind the slower gameplay and slightly outdated mechanics, give this gem a try.

Absolutely great game, and it's no shock that Borderlands, as a franchise has gone on as long as it has. Really wish they tried harder with the optimization though, I think the only reason I can play this game is cause my eyes are already terrible, so I don't notice the occasional snagging, but it's near unplayable for my fiance because the frame hitching/stuttering causes him to get motion sick.

I first played this game in 2025. 16 years after release. It feels dated, movements are sluggish and gunplay feels bad. The main story is simple and there are very few voiced lines. With all of this said, the game makes up for it with its gritty atmosphere, dark humor, occasional environmental storytelling and good DLCs. Overall, I'd say this is a great game to get if you're already a fan of Borderlands and want to experience the game that started the series. If you're new to the series, then I'd recommend starting with Borderlands 2.

I don't really know about the whole drama around these games. But purely looking at content: The expansions are a bit too much "same enemy, different skin", but the base game is solid. This is where it all started with borderlands, and it got off from here for a good reason.

Borderlands 1 is a throw back to some of the best times of my life. An incredible start to a beloved franchise, and the enhanced edition brings alot of the borderlands 2 visual assets over and makes it look incredible. Strongly recommend that you play borderlands 1 at some point even if its not the first borderlands you play.

If you're looking for reviews of Borderlands 1 in the year of our lord 2025, there are only a few possible reasons for that which I'll address. If you're new to the franchise and looking to get your feet wet, just start with Borderlands 2. Any references to the first game will likely be understood with context clues. Don't worry. If you've played later games in the series and are going back to play this one, you’ll need to understand that this was the first game in the series and essentially the first looter shooter. Yes, the framework is still there but the developers definitely took these concepts and ran with it in much more impressive directions in later installments. Art design, thankfully, is somewhat timeless with its cell shading design. The only issue here is that it has the ugly monotone brown look many of the games in the 360 era were plagued with. It makes the entire game feel very monotone not even a quarter of the way through its thankfully short 15 hour run time. Still, in a brainless shooter way, BL1 is still pretty enjoyable. The comedy here is much more subtle and tongue in cheek than some of the later installments. It works most of the time but does feel a little sleepy for a lot of it. They definitely perfected it during BL2 (and then went off the rails in the opposite direction for BL3). Side quests are boring as dirt fetch quests for the most part. Do it for the experience points and that's pretty much it. If you are replaying BL1 for the first time in many years and getting around to playing the DLCs for the first time (like I have), the game will likely feel more blander then you'll remember. Less of a diss on this game and more just being impressed with how far they went with the framework in later installments. DLCs are ok. The concept and aesthetics behind them are pretty cool but they each have something major about them that is irksome. I'd say that the claptrap DLC is honestly good but short. Ignore the arena DLC for the sake of your sanity. This enhanced edition is probably the best way to play BL1 in 2025 with the little modernizations it adds to the original game. Just keep in mind that there are some oddities in this port. There's definitely a memory leak that I can't put my finger down on what is really causing it. Thankfully remedied with a simple quit and restart. It also has an annoying bug where the game randomly won’t save your screen resolution settings, so it'll randomly go windowed at a much smaller resolution. Also simply remedied by just switching it back. BL1 in 2025 is 6-7/10. An above average to good experience, but I wouldn’t say great. Again, not a diss on the game but later installments really do show how well the foundation here can be used. Base game is about 15 or so hours with the DLCs lasting about 3 each (not counting Underdome) if you do the main scenario and some side quests along the way.

Ok so, is getting to the Vault the whole story? If there's more than that I didn't see it. I've never been the biggest fan of the BL series artstyle, but here its just so bland, so many locations are the same brown and gray colors and none of them stuck out. The combat was fine, the story was basically non-existent, the characters didn't stick out except for Tannis and Claptrap. Being that this is the first BL game I expected it to be pretty bland and empty and it is. I'd recommend playing this game ONLY to see what its like playing the first in the series (which is why I played it), don't play it expecting something grand or deep really. It just barely gets a pass from me because well its just really boring, not abysmally awful.

The Original. It does have its flaws compared to newer versions of the game. The main characters play massive roles in the rest of the series. The base game mechanics are pretty much the same in all the sequels and pre-sequels. You owe it to yourselves to start with the original.

I got the Handsome collection for free on a competitor's site, as well as the Tiny Tina games and Tales from the Borderlands, which I played and really liked. After playing Tales (a Telltale game), I wanted to play the others, but Borderlands 1 wasn't in the Handsome collection, so I bought it here (as it wasn't available elsewhere for some reason). I am not fond of games that don't allow you to manually save anywhere at any time, but there's lots of ammo (so far) and the auto save hasn't been an issue yet (bearing in mind that this was my first play session, I haven't really quit and restored to see where I end up and if I have to backtrack/repeat anything yet). It also took me 6 or 7 tries to kill 9 Toes, as I kept dying, so that gives you an idea that I don't really play these fast shooters often. But after my first 3 hour session, I would recommend the game, although I'm sure that most people would have already tried this series, as it's not particularly new. Oh, I also watched the movie and enjoyed it very much. I suspect that people that hadn't played this game first would enjoy the movie's story, but gamers that played first might've felt a little disappointed by the adaptation. Oh well, I liked it, and now I get to play the games :-)

I really enjoyed it, but man, did it take a few hours to get into. Borderlands is the first entry in the franchise of the same name and offers a glimpse into the humble beginnings of what would become a multi-game series. It presents a relatively grounded experience, blending various combat mechanics such as gunplay, melee combat, and a strong focus on grinding, levelling up, and strategic decision-making. Starting with its visual design, Borderlands is undoubtedly a visually distinct game—even by today’s standards. Characters feature a unique, sketch-like linework on their 3D models, as if hand-drawn into the world with a rugged pencil. This art style is one of the game's standout features, setting it apart from other first-person shooters of its time. It helped establish a highly recognizable visual identity, with many now associating this “scrappy linework” aesthetic with the “Borderlands style.” Personally, I find it beautiful—both creatively bold and visually pleasing. The commitment to crafting a memorable and distinctive art direction is truly commendable. As for the actual gameplay; it is, of course, quite similar to your average FPS. You walk around, shoot enemies with a variety of weapons, and upgrade your way to victory. It’s nothing revolutionary, but I can at least say the gunplay feels responsive and enjoyable to experiment with. It doesn’t have to be groundbreaking—as long as it’s somewhat unique and fun to play, I have no complaints. However, the enemy scaling deserves some discussion. Borderlands is an absolute grindfest. The core gameplay loop is simple: grind, drive to the next objective, engage in a gunfight, upgrade, and repeat. Emphasis on “grind”—even some side missions feel disproportionately difficult when coming straight from others that were only moderately challenging. If a mission is intended for level 10 or above, being exactly level 10 will give you a fair challenge, but anything higher makes it a breeze. Conversely, being under-levelled turns it into a frustrating slog of death and respawning. It’s just not for me. I tend to prefer adjacent genres that allow immersion in a narrative while still delivering engaging combat and art direction. Needing to complete fetch quests and arbitrary challenges just to level up enough to survive the next main mission feels like poor design. As for the bosses in Borderlands, they are actually quite interesting—in theory. On paper, each character seems distinct, but in practice, they all come off as either snarky egomaniacs or outright psychopaths. The only visually memorable boss besides the final one is Sledge, a loud brute with a build reminiscent of the “bruiser” enemy type, while most other bosses resemble ordinary human enemies. However, I’ll give credit where it’s due—the way you fight them is often very different. From ducking behind cover, cautiously approaching one boss, to unloading your entire arsenal into another and hoping for the best, the adaptability is commendable. These fights are often memorable for how they unfold, even if the bosses themselves feel like forgettable placeholders. Though, I do believe these villains needed more build-up throughout the game. If their designs are going to be this basic, the narrative at least needs to provide stakes and emotional investment to make those encounters more impactful, and actually give me a reason to send my Tommy gun their way. Furthermore, one area where Borderlands truly excels is its enemy variety. Each enemy type feels distinct. Bruisers are hulking tanks, psycho shotgunners are so frenzied they practically trip over themselves, and regular psychos are, well... psychos. Encountering any new enemy type is always exciting because it forces you to think creatively and adapt in real time to exploit their weaknesses. Plus, their designs are fantastic. This is clearly where the game’s visual creativity was focused—the enemy designs are genuinely masterful. On the flip side, the story is incredibly underwhelming. It’s clearly not the game's priority, and as someone who values narrative, I found that disappointing. It is possible to tell a compelling story without compromising on gameplay, but it’s also valid that Borderlands chose to specialize in what it does best. That said, the sudden emphasis on the final boss felt jarring. Up until that point, the story felt like background noise—I didn’t know or care about the characters, and then suddenly I’m fighting a giant monster with voice acting, magic portals, and dramatic stakes. It felt tacked on. Personally, I would have preferred a more subtle ending—perhaps unlocking the Vault and fading to white, treating it more like an earned reward than a dramatic plot climax. That would have been more in line with the game's overall tone. All in all, Borderlands is great fun for the first 10 hours, and I definitely recommend it if you're in the mood for a classic shoot-and-loot experience. Just approach it with the expectation to have fun and blow shit up—nothing too serious. My only major gripe was the grind-heavy progression, but that’s subjective. Overall: 7.5/10.
