Shu
Shu is a lovely little cute Platformer, and controls very well with the Xbox controller. I did have to figure out how to fly as the small box that poped up with the arrow pointing ---> direction, once in midflight did not help me much, so I just keeped trying till I discovered the left OR right top back buttons worked with constant pressing this was how to fly, flapping Shu's wings. But its easy enough to figure out with trial and error.
Game has a nice story to go, with Shu on a mission to find and save all the villagers from a very nasty storm thats approaching. The villagers have special powers to use, that will help you on your journey and beat the storm.
I could not wait till christmas to try this very cute little game out. So very glad I made this purchase, even if I should have waited !
Price for a new release, to me is not to bad, but maybe waiting & patients is the better option.
This Game reminds me of " Ori and the Blind forest" but is very much differant. The music is very nice as well. :)
I will need to play some more, so far really liking what I have played :)

So I have a little history with this game, so I might be biased:
Back in 2015, during gamescom, me and my friend have been
wandering through the indie-isle as we came across this little
marble of a game. Sadly I don't remember his name, but a nice
developer of the game not only was so kind to have a little chat
with us, but also showed us some really cool behind the scenes
stuff and I gotta say, that really made my day. The game was fun
back then, as it is now. The controls are so responsive and on
point, it just is a blast to play. And even though I was playing
like a total idiot at the day we tried it at gamescom, I had so
much fun with it, that I knew I had to get it. Now I kinda missed
when the game officially launched, otherwise I would've bought
it day one. It's fun, it's compelling and it's artstyle and soundtrack
are the stuff of dreams. As I said, I might be biased, but I can
only recommend this game to anyone that even remotely
enjoys jump'n'runs.
tl;dr: This game is one of the best indie titles to date.

I would say to grab this game on sale...
I won't say I didn't generally have a good enough time. The platforming is serviceable and the powers are varied enough.
The game clocked in at 2.2 hours for me and honestly I just didn't feel up to replaying levels to grab collectibles that don't seem to offer any reason.
I feel like they honestly could have left off the 'friends' from jumping around w/ my character. I know it's a way to tie powers to each world but just give me the powers. The characters also seem blurry at times while the background and level are crisp.
Some of the 'babbies' are in down right horrendous spots with some of the most egregious ones having you DOUBLE BACK during the boss chase levels (wtf?) I also noticed it seems difficult or maybe impossible to 100% a level on the first playthrough as going for a tablet or babby can sometimes have you skipping the bird coin things.
I feel like this game was inspired by donkey kong for some reason, idk. I did enjoy it but I feel like if it had lasted any longer, i would have tired of it. At 0.89$ its worth it for gamers of platformers, speedrunning, or 100% games.
Cheers

Truly, Shu is one of the worst platforming game I ever played in my life.
First of all the story is nearly non-existent, uninspriring and not presented well.
Second, the game is clearly made for playing with a controller, which is not written in the Steam store page.
The movement of the main character is atrocious. You always feel like ice skating. It's imprecise.
Sometimes the buttons don't register, for example the jump button and that means death and restart.
The first half of the game is all nice and colourful. The levels are not hard and all is well. I'm sure most of those who wrote the positive reviews played just the first levels LOL.
But the second half of the game is atrocious. Incredibly hard and frustrating, especially the last few levels.
In the game, you will often die not because of a lack of skill, but because of a flawed game mechanics.
In almost every level there is a part when you are chased by this black goo monster and it's very chaotic and hard. In those chasing parts, you have literally 0 margin for error.
The design of the game is also bad. You have 5 worlds and each has 3 levels. The problem is that all levels are very long. You have frequent checkpoints which is good. But unfortunately, the developers made the very ill advised decision that if you die more then 5 times during a level, you must start the level again. So the checkpoints just give you 5 lives, they don't save you if you die more then 5 times!!!!! So all that hardship you endured during a long level you must face again!!! That's just ridiculous. So I had to start over many times, and I barely made it through in many sections.
The last level, which is entirely a chase level, is something atrocious. It's a very long race level where you have to use all the powers you get from the companions, so you have to remember which companion gave you what power in a split second. During that level, the margin of error will be 0.
1 split second error - BAM the black go is here and restart. I just couldn't finish it. I arrived nearly at the end but the last segment is too hard. I'm sure it's impossible without a controller. So 30 seconds before the end of the game I was stopped and I couldn't finish. I tried 3 times but I can't be bothered to restart the whole level again. I'm very disappointed when I can't finish a game.
The graphics is ok but like it often happens, it is deceiving. You think it's a relaxing platforming game, maybe even for kids, but it's a lie. This game should have the "difficult" tag in the store page.
Make yourself a favor and avoid this deceiving, frustrating mess of a game.

It feels like a precision platformer without precision controls. Especially with a controller some keys just don't get picked up, especially when you have to press multiple buttons at the same time or quickly after each other.
Don't get me wrong, the game looks beautiful and the story is nice, but gameplay can get really annoying and repetitive.

Good short platformer game overall. It reminds me a lot of Rayman.
Music and Graphics are very good. Controls are tight. I like the idea of friends joining you and adding different abilities.
The only problem I might have with this game, might be some of the level designs which can turn frustrating, mainly the final area.
Get this on sale and you will have solid platformer.

the story is too flat as well as the character - it doesn't have any depth, the bgm is basically nonexistent. The gameplay is frustrating at best - you only have 5 attempts to clear a level and once you failed 5 times, you start from the beginning of the level with all the collectables lost, you also lose everything you picked up after the checkpoint after each death, often resulting into repeating this death 4 more times on different occasions if you're trying to get all the items. Makes picking them up a major waste of time and source of stress.

Good, fast-paced Jump'n'Run. The worlds are fun to play, but hard to master.
The levels are designed for speedrunning and you need to do that for 100%, so keep that in mind.

Game is very short, no game play outside of jumping and collecting, and there is a part in the first level which is impossible since the obstacle is faster than you, I'm good.
That was OK.
Another typical neutral review. As an inexpensive indie title, you will surely dig some fun here, the mechanic is cleaver, but unfortunately it wasn´t very well explored, controls were mediocre for a platformer, the "escape section" were especially hard due this. I was patient enough to finish it, got too bored to do 100%. All in all, give it a shot if you are in a good mood and wish to support a small dev.

What can I write except what a RELIEF it's over. It's not pride, not satisfation, it's just a relief I can forget about this game and I curse myself for being into achievements. Just look at my hours... if you are poor speedrunner like me - DON'T PLAY THIS GAME. I warn you, you'll lose your sanity there. Why? Because this game is so poorly developed you might want to cry.
First of all, obnoxious controls. I had to press jump like I've got brain damage because it wouldn't respond properly. You're expected to do short jumps but you just can't. I think that's the main reason I have so many hours, because half of the time Shu wouldn't jump after pressing A.
Another thing - controller not working properly and it just happening in this game. I have to play on cable otherwise I wouldn't be able to even start the game.
No story. You just see some intro where Shu-Grandpa is talking about evil cloud and some statue... so you just assume you need to run to safety? In the end
you sing?
. I don't know, story is last thing you think about when playing, like it's non existing.
Bug with collecting butterflies. At least I hope it's bug and not a "feature", because it was not working properly on four levels. If you want to play again, they are restarting for some reason. Talking about Winding Heights, A Once Proud Outpost, Desperate Race and In View of The End. Not cool.
Another things, less important - you can't check leaderboard, because scrolling is not working + not skippable credits. Don't need to force people to go through all of the names. If your game is good, people will watch it.
And the last thing, which is the main reason why I hate this game - time trials. Time trials, speedrunning are fine but only if executed properly. In this game it's just pure dogshit. And you know it's true just by seeing how many people feel relieved just like me that they are done. No one is proud, only tired and annoyed.
In conclusion - don't buy, don't play. It sucks and it steals will to live.

A quick and fun game. Offers a good challenge at times. Excellent music and art. Controls are a bit wonky sometimes, but its minor (played with xbox controller). Was unable to remap glide (I'd rather have it on trigger than bumper). Other than the control issues, its a solid game thats a lot of fun to play.

A little disclaimer: I on ocassion work as a freelance web designer for Coatsink, although I had no part in developing Shu itself, the last version I played was at EGX 2 years ago
Thoughts
After not playing the game since EGX 2 years ago and having nothing but video footage to go on, I was pleasently surprised when I got to play the final product.
The game is barely recognisable from that old demo, it is now a fully realised, 2.5D beautiful platformer with tight controls.
It's a completionist's dream, with so much to find and many ingeniously hidden on alternate routes! While the playthrough from start to finish is not overly long, if that's all you want from a platformer this isn't for you. Shu is full of different ways toi play, alternate routes to find secrets and important to many, leaderboards to rack up the fastest time against the world!
I am extremely proud of the game Coatsink has made, I highly recommend this, especially for the low price (Also the sound is awesome so of course I bought the soundtrack)
Pros.

Beautiful aesthetic, environmental & character.

Awesome sound from the soundtrack to the effects (I noticed the windchimes immediately).

Very tight controls, I never felt like I wasn't in control of every action.

Cute cinematics, no words needed to convery the story of Shu.

Interesting mechanic of gaining abilities temporarily based on which villagers you are saving at the time.

No enemies, made for a platformer more tuned to just that, not combat.

Difficulty curve was there and apparent, this is a platformer for genre lovers.

Check point and life system is awesome, reduced much frustation, felt very fair.

Plug & play with my PS4 - DS4.

Cons.
These are fairly nitpicky

Tooltips for abilities confused me a few too many times, mainly the button press ones perhaps as I didnt look up a control map before I started.

The thorned vines in the forest levels seemed to blend a bit too much in the fast pace of running from the storm & a few times some hazard hitboxes felt a little harsh.

Cutscene sound blew my ears off after I had turned the game volume down on my Volume Mixer options.
Shu is a fantastic little game and well worth the money, a beautiful platformer built for lovers of a the genre, wether you be a collector of everything or a speed freak.
Now to go 100% the levels!

Shu is worth buying as an alternative to Rayman. The game has beautiful graphics and a good sound track. This game can do so well if the devs just added a few things the comminity recommends. That extra polish would put this game over the top. I'm having fun minus a few gripes.
Pros
Rayman like platforming
Graphics and Sound
Sense of urgency
Gameplay mechanics
Negative
Not so obvious dangers that kill you
You can get stuck moving from one platform to another
Could have a better story

I love this already. Have completed the first world and despite dying a few times it's addictive and cute enough to encourage me to keep trying with regular check points so I don't lose all my progress if I die mid-level (which I hate) unless I lose all my lives. The levels are straight forward and yet challenging with a few nicely hidden gems throughout. I enjoy the different powers Shu can use as you progress. It has great game play, pleasant music and the characters are cute! I've missed playing decent enjoyable platform games with simple yet enticing plot and characters that I actually like and this game ticks all those boxes. This game is right up your street if platforms are your thing and worth a try even if they're not. ^_^

An adorable platformer which nails the crucial easy to learn difficult to master aspect that is so iconic of 2D platformers. Shu has some beautiful music fun powerups and moments of high adrenaline action that makes this a must play for any platformer fan

Shu is an excellent looking game with an unique art style. A lot of original gameplay mechanics will keep on freshening up your experience throughout a big variety of levels with different landscapes/looks.
The game runs very smooth and gives the more competitive players a chance to compete on time based highscore leaderboards.
I would personally recommend playing Shu with a controller, as the keyboard controls can feel a bit clunky at times.

This is a polished platformer with plenty of mechanics to play with and a good sense of how to hide secrets in its levels. It's not the longest game in terms of time spent to complete it, but the levels present a good variety of challenges, and make good use of the various mechanics available through the characters you meet up with. The only thing I wish I'd seen would be variations of the character teamups you could have had, but what's here is great already.
If you don't like platformers in the first place, I doubt this would change your mind, but for everyone else, it's worth a try!

The ambient is marvelously well crafted and there is real love put into this game, but the story makes no sense, the gameplay is full of quirks and bugs and the way the checkpoints are places are ridiculous. This might have been a great game with a bit more beta testing and bug quashing, but as it is, I feel it is not even worth the time you put into it.. There is no real challenge...

Your basic platforming bread and butter.
If this was a sandwich, it would be a peanut butter sandwich.
It could be just the thing to hit your craving, or you might be allergic to it.
Jumping and gliding your way through the levels, collecting butterflies. With a cute 2d character design, 3d backgrounds with a clear and somewhat minimalistic style. Breezing along as you run to the right, with some challenges in the way of obstacles in the level layout. Finding friends along the way, holding their hands help you manuever through the level with the use of their special abilities.

This is a bit of a qualified recommendation. There are definitely better platformers out there but this one is solid enough and I would particularly recommend it to folks with kids due to the colorful style and not-too-punishing difficulty.
Pros:
- Beautiful colorful graphics
- Great character design
- Character design links up with gameplay as "hand-holding" with companion characters gives you different abilities, this is a nice gameplay hook
Cons:
- Controls and collision detection for deaths feels a little "off" sometimes in a way that is hard to explain
- I don't understand the purpose of combining the concepts of lives and checkpoints
- 2.5D style sometimes makes it tough to discern what parts of the level are foreground and background
- Last level is a bit of a difficulty spike and the ending is underwhelming

A fun platformer with a nice style to the art and decent music to go along with it. Replayibility is probably intended for it, what with speedruns, collectibles, multiple routes through levels, etc., but the game suffers from a number of issues that make it hard to play through levels more than once without feeling frustrated. The controls aren't necessarily airtight and are difficult to get the hang of at crucial situations, button presses in specific situations seem arbitrary in what place you can execute them and are never consistent, and the game's collision/hit detection is more often than not rather spotty.
It's a fun enough platformer, but the controls aren't precise enough to allow for the precision required in the platforming without some trial and error, and it impacts the entire game after some time of playing it. 7/10, definitely worth playing once and seeing how it is, but the game is just frustrating enough for the wrong reasons that replay value might be lost on people.

Cute, fun and a vibrant little gem!
This game has a lot to offer including action, adventure, a nice little story line with some unique and quirky characters to be met along your journey. Stunning artwork and amazing soundtrack with plenty of achievements and collectables along the way and also time trail leader boards for those competitive ones. The levels get more challenging as you progress so don't let the gentle intro fool you!
Very attractive plat-former, Highly recommended!

It's good for this level of game to exist, cause they make crystal clear why other games are considered polished, entarteining and well-thought out.
Atmosphere and storytelling are nothing special, focus of the game is a very basic platforming with basically nothing new, and precision of the command is null, moving parts in the last stages of the game kills you inconsistently and withoout reasons, the game does a bad bad work in showing you what's dangerous and what's not. Random leap of faith are required with no real sense of discovery attached to them.
Even the level design is dull and works against the game experience.
Don't waste your money, there is much much better on steam.

I won't lie, it frustrated me quite a few times and I was going to rage quit multiple times. Some segments are just annoying. Jump isn't always responsive. However, the game itself is decent enough for a playthrough imho, though some worlds are definitely much better and fun than others.

I like this game. A lot. Now that they added free DLC, I had to write a review.
I'm a big fan of side-scrolling platformers, and Shu is one of the better recent ones. It can get difficult (the punishing time trials especially), but it's easy enough to finish the story. And it's a breathtaking journey along the way. It’s nice to see a platformer that doesn't go with the "retro" pixel graphics style.

Shu is a beautiful action adventure 2D platformer game that will have you engrossed in no time! You get to control shu and a collection of hand-drawn set of characters as they run, jump and glide their way up to an ancient mysterious castle. Will you use the unique character’s abilities to reach your goal? Do you want to have a boss chase? Do you want a challenge, whilst being delighted with the game worlds? Or more importantly do you think you have what it takes to outrun the end of the world!
Well if so sit back, relax and grab a cup of tea and let’s get into the review

This is a very beautiful game to play and easily addictive! There are lots of achievements to get which is great for someone like me who loves achievements!! …and they are really pretty achievement badges too. The music is really nice. I died a lot on my first level but I am playing with keyboard so it is taking a bit of getting used to the controls. Overall stunning game and can’t wait to play more!

Great game. Runs super smooth and has beautiful art direction. The controls are a bit floatier than many other platformers, but the levels are designed perfectly around this. I also enjoyed that new abilities are acquired by rescuing the villagers, which means that the abilities are not permanent upgrades, keeping the gameplay varied. If you are not a completionist, the game is on the shorter side, but for achievement hunters, there is plenty here.

Good platformer when the secondary mechanics start switching in and out.
First 5 or so minutes of gameplay are a bit slow paced for my tastes, but there's quite a bit more to it after that.

I am 32 years old.
My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.
Thank you.
