Assassin’s Creed Unity has to be the most frustrating game I’ve ever played, and probably the hardest AC title in the pre Unity era. While I appreciate its attempt to return to a more stealth focused gameplay style making it feel like the "purest" Assassin’s Creed title it ultimately fails to be an enjoyable experience due to its many issues.
First off, performance is a major problem. I experienced constant freezing, particularly during the flashbacks after assassinations, and after checking Reddit, steam discussions, I realized I wasn’t the only one. This made the game even more frustrating. Bunch of bugs also that break the game is still there.
The parkour system was one of Unity’s biggest innovations, and while visually stunning, it was incredibly inconsistent. When it worked, it felt fluid and rewarding, but most of the time, it was sluggish and unresponsive. Arno would often ignore my inputs, refuse to enter windows, or randomly cling to surfaces like a confused spider. I love how detailed the world is, but does everything has to be climbable, chairs for example...
Combat in Unity is by far the worst in the series up to this point. Every enemy seems to have a pistol, making open fights against groups of five or more nearly impossible. Sure, it’s more realistic, but it’s not fun. Parrying is unreliable, and when it does work, it locks you into an animation that leaves you vulnerable to other enemies. The enemy AI is also ridiculous, sometimes guards detect me without even looking in my direction, and if one enemy spots me, suddenly the entire city of Paris seems to be after me without any logical explanation.
Stealth, in theory, is well implemented, but the game’s mission design often makes it frustrating. Some missions are overcrowded with guards who have absurd detection ranges, making true stealth nearly impossible. There’s no breathing room in certain sections, which turns missions into infuriating trial and error sequences rather than rewarding stealth experiences. Also lack of checkpoints during major assassinations killed fun for me.
The skill system is another downgrade for me. Unity locks basic abilities like double assassinations and throwing money behind a sync point system, which you earn through main and co-op missions. Worse yet, fully upgrading Arno requires playing co-op, and while private matches are an option, some missions are clearly designed for multiple players, making solo completion difficult. It’s a flawed system that feels more like an unnecessary barrier than a meaningful progression mechanic.
I think the story is underrated, thought it was pretty intresting. It’s clear they were trying to replicate Assassin’s Creed 2, with Arno feeling like a French Ezio, but it never quite reaches the same level of impact tho. Side content is mostly dull and repetitive, though I did enjoy the murder mysteries and helif rifts, which were a fresh and interesting additions. However, the sheer number of collectibles in the game is overwhelming hundreds of chests, many requiring lockpicking, which quickly became tedious. The fact that some collectibles only appear when you’re near them (instead of being marked on the map) just makes it worse.
Graphics look insane, probably one of the best looking in AC franchise. They recreated Paris so perfectly, and the details look awesome. Open world just feels alive with all those NPC's.
That said, I enjoyed the DLC and would actually recommend it. But overall, Unity was a letdown for me. While it had potential and some great ideas and I had good time playing it, the frustrating bugs, poor mechanics, and questionable design choices make it hard to recommend especially for casual players.
