an actual complete game that isn't constantly re-balanced or reworked entirely to its core, while also adding another paid dlc... unlike another certain game

Colonize planets, oppress lesser civilizations and delete foreign empires with enhanced diplomatic techniques. Truly a game for the European man.

Hey hey, people. Jay here, and I want to talk to you about the greatest competitor against Stellaris, Distant Worlds 2, and Galactic Civ 3. What makes this game different is its beautiful artwork, the choir that sounds like something right out of Crusader Kings 2, and how quickly you can get right to the genocide. >:3 Special thanks to custom factions, which is a must for any 4x game even worth looking at, because here we can make humans into more than Starship Troopers; they are now also capable of stealing alien genes and learning how to improve the human form without turning into chimera abominations. It's the best of both worlds, baby. And they also start with the first 2 whole tech tiers entirely unlocked, with 2 additional population slots for each and every planet, and can be min-maxed in some very amusing ways. Speaking of planets, I haven't yet gone to endgame levels, and this takes some getting-used-to, but I like how all the "management" of my empire is system-scale. Specifically, if you have 1 to 5 planets colonized in one star system, you don't need to tediously rummage through the menus of each of those colonized planets individually, it's all consolidated as 1 solar system entity. (And more importantly, so are the base-building upgrades. So 1 upgrade can enhance a solar system housing 5 lairs of human shenanigans - with some valid colonies having 0 pop but the game is totally OK with that - and all those colonies get the benefit.) But the game defaulting to arrow keys for map movement instead of WASD does irk something in my muscle memory, and double subversion since right clicking exits menus in this game. It's a very mild bit of weirdness but it won't outweigh all the extinction you're going to enjoy. >:3 There is only one warning I must give you, though. THE "Definitive Edition" (a.k.a. the only REAL way to enjoy the game) costs a nickel over precisely a hundred dollars. (Yes, the 6% Maryland tax did raise it almost beautifully to that exact dollar figure, so your local taxes may vary and you may not see as well-rounded a figure.) But, if you're unemployable and have more time than you know what to do with, I'm sure you'll make it count. ;) And if you ever find the whole bundle on sale for 50% off, I envy you. Because it looks and feels like a AAA game, so it's fair to command the price of one, but nobody is going to question the fact that...such a price is indeed steep. There is a secondary caution, but unless you're a tech nerd, this one is not applicable: modding is...not fun. You can't change the voice and face of the Terran Emperor whats-his-name into the majestic and adorable Empress Scarlet (though rumor has it somebody figured out how to transform the egotistical big-brained Horatio into the guy from CSI Miami), and the only tool I found readily available was a hero creator that does not even have an "Open" feature so you can't return to any heroes you created with it (not without digging into the My Documents folder and reopening specific fragments of said hero thanks to Notepad++). Though I do like the power to create "custom skills", but because I prefer mods that do NOT make my game crash, I will NOT be playing with that, thank you very much. Plus, if you make a second hero with it, the hero will be stuck in The Void while your first hand-crafted hero will loyally spawn by your side every time - I don't know if this is a bug or a balancing hard-cap (since it does give you a slightly unfair advantage of starting the game with 1 hero more than the opponents), but it's very annoying. You see the 10 hours I spent enjoying consuming the lizard milk jugs (yes, the only thing those lizard-people are good for...IS BEING CONSUMED >:D ), and I have not been able to figure out how to mod any other aspect of the game. Now, if you excuse me, I need to get back to having Scarlet "work from the shadows" stringing along Emperor whats-his-name like a literal puppet (much like how the human controlling Kermit the Frog doesn't get the credit deserved, Scarlet also doesn't get her due credit...and also like with Kermit, Scarlet's going to control him by sticking her hand up his as-) so she can consume the genes of all the other xeno filth to create a truly perfected "Human Master Race". Glory be to the sentient plush doll!

Yep. I like it. 70+ hours was definitely worth the price. It's a bit difficult to get into, even for a seasoned 4X space game nerd, but that comes with a game that has an immense amount of replayability. So much of this game is unique while blending what makes other 4X space games great all into one package. I heartily recommend it if that sounds like something you are into.

Excellent game- if you are willing to invest time into learning and watching some YT videos - I needed to watch several over several months before it all started to click. I would dabble and leave after 20 minutes - rinse and repeat every month but I stuck at it and feel awesome - I am making progress now and love it. i got it very cheap on sale - had I paid full price I may have refunded (as the learning curve was steep (for me) and the tutorial, why others have said it was great - it did not help me as much as play throughs on YT did. Whilst there are some great in depth videos about this game - you want to start with watching what others do to start off "JB returns to Endless space 2" series on YT - really helped as he shared his thought process on every move- then it started to click. I am addicted now.

You just... do the same 4 (I mean that literally) things over and over, with minute rewards that usually just make you better at that thing... but that thing isn't fun. It's a chore.

It's not bad per se, but I personally wouldn't recommend it to my friends. I got the definitive edition and only played one map. All along I just wished the game would let me do what I want to do, instead of constantly throwing random quests with laughable rewards at me. It also felt much shallower than Stellaris, and the UI strives to be accessible, but instead those huge icons and graphs make some information hard to find. You can't even easily see all the resources you have available. Many systems feel pretty unpolished. I was neighbors with a pacifist faction, mine being scientific and non-agressive as well, but they refused all my attempts at making peace, sharing the map etc. In the end I was practically forced to go to war with them, because they kept expanding into my territory. Later, when I was in an alliance with other factions, they just kept waging wars and being "wounded" if you don't attack or defend points they tell you to attack or defend. And you have no say if they decide to attack something or to make peace. It was pretty silly when I was attacking a faction's capital, and one turn before taking it my allies just make peace. And then I have to declare war again (taking the rest of the alliance to war as well) to finish the siege. And that's the story with everything in this game: there are politics, but they are meaningless; there are quests, but the rewards are laughable (except for a couple "main" quests); there are system destroyers, but they take 35 turns to charge (for comparison endgame wonders took me 10-12 turns to construct). Technoligies are scattered all over: for example there's a building that converts food into construction when food is no longer needed. This building is in the "Empire development" tree, while all the other construction related buildings are in the economy tree. And almost no technologies have any pre-requisits, you only need to unlock the corresponding tier. You have to know pretty well where to find the things you need, and go for them. Oh, and there's also hacking, I'll just say it's bad, because if I go into details it would be another essay in here. The game also nags you to start hacking if you're ignoring the mechanic. Overall I would recommend Endless Space 2 if you want some narrative and directions to follow. Playing once for every faction and exploring their story (it's presented as a quest line) might be enjoyable. If you want to make your own narrative and create your own story, then I'd recommend getting Stellaris with expansion pass instead.

Endless space 2 is a really great game. The diplomacy system is brilliant, very nice interface, beats the competition in thoses areas. Very well optimised turn based system where the AI thinks seamlessly without impacting framerate, brilliant. The caracteres have some caractere, nice game mechanics. The is a balancing issue with cheating the market and also abusing the academy, using their fleets is way too powerful. ENDLESS SPACE 3 PLEASE. More of the same. Just make the ship combats a bit better... Either just look better, or give is some interactivity. Nail that and you will have a perfect.

I love 4x games and have played them mostly out of all the video games I play but this one is not great. I prefer the first one over this. Pros: Graphics are great and battles are fun. Invasions are actually kind of fun to see play out and play better than the first. Cons: Turn loading is not great, AI gets massive buffs and claim alot of the early objectives and there isnt any real counter to it. Early game is just holding on by the seat of your pants while trying to appease the warmongers. You are forced to expand and the planet up grades and most of the time not even worth it. Late game is a snooze fest while you pummel your opponents with ease. Over all I really wanted to enjoy this game but found myself super frustrated at the experience. I suggest just getting the first one. Everything seems way more rewarding and fleshed out.
