The story of Assassin’s Creed II picks up right after the events of the first game, but this time, our present-day protagonist, Desmond Miles, steps into the shoes of Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Unlike Altair, Ezio is portrayed as a charismatic and emotional character, coming from a large and loving family—until a devastating betrayal pushes him onto the path of the Assassins.
Ezio’s journey is a coming-of-age story, showing his transformation from a reckless young noble into a skilled and determined Assassin. This progression is not only crucial for Ezio but also serves as a learning experience for Desmond, helping him understand what it truly means to be an Assassin. Thanks to Ezio’s compelling personality and emotional depth, the player feels a stronger connection to him compared to Altair, who was more distant and reserved in the first game. The overarching narrative involving Templars, Assassins, and divine entities is well-crafted and engaging.
From a gameplay perspective, the new mechanics are refreshing and add depth to the experience. The introduction of currency, lootable items, and diverse assassination techniques is a welcome improvement. However, some aspects feel slightly unbalanced: shops are more numerous, yet they lack diversity in their offerings; monetization is overly abundant, allowing players to accumulate wealth quickly and reach financial max-out too soon; and while Villa Auditore is a great concept, its renovation system feels somewhat limited, as upgrades are completed relatively quickly.
One of the more awkward design choices lies in the notification system. Important messages appear in large, clunky text boxes with odd text alignment, making them look out of place. While this might not affect the overall gameplay, small details like this can impact immersion and polish.
Assassin’s Creed II is a significant step forward from its predecessor, offering a more engaging protagonist, a richer world, and refined mechanics. While it has some minor flaws in UI design and economic balancing, the overall experience is a must-play for fans of the series.
