This game is phenomenal, and is currently worth buying regardless of the Early Access tag/state. It has plenty of content, is well polished, and honestly feels more finished than fully released games like Starbound and Core Keeper.
My feedback and some notes on content or mechanics that I believe could benefit from some changes:
- Traps and wiring feel a bit pointless, especially in the late game. Designing/placing/removing wiring feels clunky without an item like Terraria's "Grand design", that lets you drag long lines at once and extends your placement range to anything you can see. Traps deal fixed amounts of damage, which means in the early game they probably can absolutely destroy raiders, but in the late-game (when we started using them), they tickle the 3-4k HP raiders more than anything else and take extremely long to actually kill anything.
- Settler AI, especially regarding pathing, really needs some extra polish, given how major settlers are to this game. We made a large fortress around our settlement to funnel raiders into specific east/west castle entrances, and that worked just fine, but sometimes our settlers would just get stuck walking into the southern wall forever when going out for trade, mining, or fishing missions. The only way to get them unstuck was to manually go down and break the wall open so they could pass and close it behind them. Settlers also would walk into our trap paths when going out/coming back from missions if the trap maze was not fully blocked off, and would get stuck in there and slowly die.
- Information access could be improved, both for settlers and for stats such as resistance. The elder provides some info on basic mechanics, but things such as settlers 100-block areas not being visible, resistance and resistance generation not being really explained at all, etc. feel very ethereal and make it harder to engage with these mechanics. I am firmly in the camp that believes that wikis should not be a necessity when playing a game, but me and my friend only really understood resistance properly by the time we crafted a late-game resistance-focused armour set, at which point it was pretty useless to us already.
- Quality of life is already pretty amazing in this game, but some small changes could help make it even better. I believe granting players an option to copy-paste chest/machine settler rules without opening the UI of the chest/machine would be great for large settlements where you might often need to copy the same rules quite a few times. An item or settler menu option that let's you register chest/machine rules with names and quickly apply them would be a godsend for automation accessibility. Settlers remembering their beds and going back to them after they are downed and revived instead of a new random bed would also be great.
- Class balance is always a tricky topic in games like these, and I don't think all classes need to be perfectly balanced, but I do think all classes need to be in the same level of viability and have similar amounts of options, and currently, I feel like melee has the most options on paper, but the least viability in reality in the mid-to-late game (
deep caves to incursions
). The katana is the most fun weapon in the game overall in my opinion (I love the stack management with swings and its overall speed, it's lovely), but it doesn't feel like there is any armour+trinket set I can use to make it realistically as good at dealing damage as basically any late-game mage, summon, or range setup using a glass cannon set for their respective classes (and we're 2 items away from having all items in the game as of writing this, so I have access to all trinkets and armour sets). Resilience, a mostly melee exclusive stat, also falls off very hard in the late-game, with it's only real use IMO being to get 40+% damage buff on the Crystal Amethyst Set, but at the cost of a lot of survivability since it is so hard to generate resilience (a few resilience points per swing) in comparison to healing HP (100HP health pots, HP/s regen pots, 10% max HP heals from sapphire staff, blood weapons) (yes I'm aware you can combine both methods of healing, HP and resi, but the lowered HP from the Clockwork Heart means you're nearing 1-shot range in T6 incursions if you don't currently have resi stacked already, and without the Clockwork Heart the damage buff from the melee crystal set is even lower than other classes' options). Given the riskier nature of melee requiring you to be close to enemies, I'd expect it to be baseline a high damage class when using non-tank sets, not the lowest damage class.
Overall, Necesse is truly an amazing gem of a game, and me and my friend will be fully replaying on release. The only reason I am so specific and almost nit-picky in my feedback about the game is that the game made me care a lot! We truly had a blast playing through it and it brought back the wonder of playing Terraria for the first time many years ago, but with a lot of improvements over that original experience (such as knowing what I am supposed to do to progress without needing a wiki or external guide lol).
Thank you so much to the devs for their incredible work!

**WARNING**
This game is very good! thus makin' it very addicting once you play it you won't be able to stop.
From making small houses, farming, conquering settlements to grinding and defending raiders...
Game is absolute blast, all the elements were carefully thought & worked on.
Man from renaming villagers to styling them, giving them armors and cosmetic combination that sht is dope!
I just can't stop to compliment the game but I can't rename all the good element it has!
--ALSO THE DEV ALWAYS WORK ON IT BEEN PLAYING THIS GAME FOR SO LONG NOW AND THEY'RE STILL TOO ENTHUSIASTIC WHEN IT COMES ON UPDATING THE GAME ---
Controller support - Online Coop - Lan - not to mention it can be played on Nucleus having to share and splitscreen-play it w/ your households. (or if you have dual monitor)
10/10 a banger and a must get! Experience it for yourself

Imagine Terraria had a baby with Rimworld, that's Necesse. Ever play a colony sim but wish you could control one of the characters? Or that your base could be populated with useful NPC's that can automate the tedious parts of the game (harvesting crops, collecting wood, etc) but could also go out on adventures with you? If the answer is yes then you need to get this game. Not to mention the soundtrack is amazing! Excited for the 1.0 release that's coming in October, will definitely be starting a fresh save to re-experience the game and see how much it's grown.

Surprisingly deep game with a lot to do. The colony sim component is actually really decent.
Controls aren't great but doesn't take much to get used to it.
Definitely worth a go.

This game breaks the golden rule of game development - 'don't just make 'X' game but better'.
But the developer didn't just break the rule. They broke the rule off, stabbed it into their pelvis, and without even taking the time out to wait for the rule to heal and fuse to their body, used that and their giant magnum dong to DP everyone who has ever said that line.
I concur with all the reviews saying this is a mish mash of 'Rimworld,' 'Minecraft,' 'Stardew Valley,' 'Terarria,' with some bullet hell influences.
This is the most game to ever game. My flabbers are ghasted to extreme levels that nobody speaks of this game really anywhere.
My only request would be to balloon the visuals budget and configure the game to run in Pseudo-3D so you can play in a first or third person view, just so you can say you are in those markets and subsequently dominate them.
I have only an hour of gameplay but I assure you, I have played this game before. Dozens of times over many different points of my life. This game is that guy pal. This is the game that every girlfriend is afraid it will be when their man tells them to not be worried about it. Today it's your man. Tomorrow, it's you too. Both of your are now bottoms, and- oh look, the game's about to break another rule-
This game fucks. Hard. 9.9999999999/10

Do you like Rimworld's pawn management? Do you like Terraria's aestetic, progression and combat? No? Then you probably should just find another game. If yes, you might like this game. It is pretty good.

Amazing game in the vein of Terraria, Stardew Valley, and other similiar sandbox survival rpgs! Most notably is you can recruit people to your village and assign them work, items, and even go on adventures with you. Highly recommended <3

The charm of Corekeeper and the settlement management of Rimworld. Exploration is through biomes which are structured by Islands with caves underneath them. The game is fairly laid back compared to something like Terraria but has the same kind of interesting weapons and boss farming. I've had this game on my radar for a while and wished I played it sooner. Can't wait for 1.0 release.

So far I like creative mode. I just really wish there was a way to extend building out more than like 3 blocks. I have a giant screen so clicking 3 blocks around the character is a little obnoxious. The rest of the game is great so far though. Just a minor pet peeve.
If anyone knows a way to change this, I'm listening.
EDIT: Seems to be working just fine. Maybe not for specific tiles or objects? Not sure. Works for what I'm doing now.

There have been so many great updates since I purchased a while ago. The game has a surprising amount of depth, and I haven't even "finished" it yet in my 25 hours of play time (haven't gone to every level of cave yet). There's also a wide variety when it comes to how you want to play. Lots of settings for how the world works, similar to how you can choose your difficulty in Rimworld. If you're like me and can't keep track of a ton of projectiles then you can just turn down the difficulty a bit and you're good to go.

Necesse is an engaging and meticulously crafted indie sandbox RPG that expertly blends exploration, crafting, base-building, and combat into a rich, open-ended experience. Developed by South Games, this title invites players into a vast, procedurally generated world brimming with secrets, quests, and a vibrant ecosystem. At its core, Necesse offers a freedom-centric gameplay loop where players can shape their own adventure—whether that means building sprawling settlements, forging alliances with NPC factions, or delving into dungeons teeming with monsters. The game’s charming pixel art aesthetic, combined with its expansive systems, creates a surprisingly deep and satisfying experience for fans of survival and RPG hybrids.
One of the standout features of Necesse is its layered crafting and building mechanics. From the moment you start, gathering resources like wood, stone, and ore becomes crucial as you construct everything from simple tools to elaborate structures and defenses. The building system is highly intuitive yet versatile, allowing players to customize homes, workshops, and even entire towns with modular components. This depth encourages creativity and strategic planning, especially when fortifying against hostile creatures or managing limited resources. The game also features farming, animal husbandry, and trade systems that add economic dimensions, making the world feel alive and interconnected.
Exploration and combat in Necesse are equally compelling. The procedurally generated maps are varied and populated with diverse biomes, each offering unique resources, enemies, and secrets. Players will encounter everything from peaceful villages to dangerous ruins, encouraging a balance of cautious exploration and combat readiness. Battles are action-oriented but accessible, requiring timing and tactical use of weapons, spells, and equipment. The progression system rewards players with new skills and gear, which in turn unlocks access to tougher challenges and rarer materials.
Narratively, Necesse presents a subtle but engaging backdrop. While the game does not focus heavily on a linear story, it peppers the world with lore, quests, and NPC interactions that add context and motivation for exploration and conquest. Players can engage in diplomacy with various factions, unlocking new opportunities or conflicts that shape the world dynamically. This emergent storytelling allows each playthrough to feel unique and personal, driven by player choices rather than scripted sequences.
Visually, Necesse embraces a retro-inspired pixel art style that is both nostalgic and vibrant. Character sprites, environmental tiles, and animations are crafted with care, delivering charm without sacrificing clarity. The user interface is clean and functional, designed to manage complex inventories, crafting recipes, and character stats efficiently. Accompanying the visuals is an ambient soundtrack that blends seamlessly with the game’s mood, enhancing immersion without overwhelming the player.
Despite its many strengths, Necesse is not without minor flaws. Some players might find the procedural generation occasionally leads to repetitive terrain or quest patterns, and the lack of a strong central narrative may feel limiting to those seeking a more guided RPG experience. Additionally, the game’s multiplayer mode, while promising, can sometimes suffer from connectivity issues or balancing challenges, though regular updates aim to address these concerns.
In summary, Necesse is a thoughtfully designed sandbox RPG that offers a rich blend of crafting, exploration, and combat within a charming pixelated world. Its open-ended approach empowers players to carve out their own stories and strategies, making it a rewarding experience for those who enjoy freedom and creativity in their gameplay. With its blend of depth, accessibility, and emergent storytelling, Necesse stands out as a noteworthy title in the indie RPG landscape, appealing to both casual players and hardcore sandbox enthusiasts alike.

Top down Terraria and in my opinion much more enjoyable than Terraria. Progress feels more natural than the other game, the soundtrack is to die for, and I'm simply put, addicted. I was looking for an RPG crafting game with a bit of colony management and Necesse delivers just that!

TL;DR Necesse has great elements of base building, automation, open-world exploration, RPG, and 2D combat. If some of those things aren't your jam, that's okay- you can dabble in all of these as much or as little as you want without it hampering your experience.
This is a rare game for me that is equally fun solo and with friends. I started this game directly off a Satisfactory/Factorio binge, and I was surprised how much the base building elements in Necesse scratched that same itch. The system for automating my inventory sorting/crafting system through villagers is fantastic, and I keep hoping games like Enshrouded introduce a version of it. It's immensely satisfying to return to town and dump all my loot into one chest, then watch my villagers swoop in and put everything in its assigned place.
I was less interested in the combat, as Necesse's particular style has never really been my thing. But I was pleasantly surprised here, too- there's a great depth of equipment options, making for a wide variety of ways to win.
Most importantly, the developer is still actively developing the game and they keep an eye out for quality-of-life features in addition to great new content. I hear the mod scene is great too, but I've been so enthralled in the vanilla version I haven't had time to do anything with it.

Even though the game feels very similar to Terraria, with the settlers automation the grind is no more and you can focus on exploring or boss fights or base building.
I really love the game and highly recommend it if you like Terraria.

This game is phenomenal. NGL I like the building system and going down to enter caves. This game game building mechanics is so simple that I actually want to build pretty structures for my villagers which is quite different to my buildings in terraria.
I am no way a builder, but this game makes me want to be one and I have spent more time building than going in the caves to get stronger.
For those that like terraria, you'll feel like playing it for the first time (don't trust me one that, that's subjective)
8\10 because it is a well made game but I am keeping an open mind for future updates , I am sure with enough work and bug fixing you guys can make it a 10\10

First of all let me just say that Necesse is one of those rare indie games that completely surprises you—in the best way possible. It blends the best parts of Terraria, Stardew Valley, and classic dungeon crawlers into something fresh and exciting. From mining and farming to epic boss fights and colony management, there’s always something meaningful to do. The pixel art is charming, the soundtrack is relaxing yet atmospheric, and the gameplay loop is downright addictive.
What makes it stand out even more is the incredible depth and polish for an early access title. The devs are passionate, constantly updating the game with thoughtful improvements and features the community actually asks for. The colony system, in particular, feels like a game within a game—you can recruit settlers, manage their jobs, and watch your own little society thrive.
Whether you're playing solo or with friends, Necesse is a cozy-yet-challenging adventure that feels like home. It’s a labor of love, and it shows. If you’re even slightly into sandbox games, don’t sleep on this one. It deserves way more attention.
Highly recommend. 5/5.

Ever Played Rimworld? Love the settlement management but dont enjoy the combat?
Played Terraria, Loved the combat, but wanted more freedom to control, with Top down view?
LOOK NO FURTHER. This is the best of both games + more. Tons of bosses, Bullet hellish, and tons to explore. Control your villagers and setup expeditions / trade routes, and have tons of specialized people in your village to trade with / buy from. Then go face a Boss with 40,000 HP for fun. From summoning weapons to melee, its all possible.
Id suggest adding 2-3 mods. Specifically RPG Classes, as well as Aphoria to name some. But stock gameplay is great too!
10/10 already and i cant wait till 1.0 arrives in October.

The game is buggy. I was getting graphical glitches like black flashes and artifacting. Controller support works until it doesn't. It worked for about 2 mins then it just stopped in the middle of playing. I was able to get it working eventually by plugging in a PS5 controller but then that stopped working again. I have bad carpal tunnel and need to use a controller these days
Toxic community. I go onto their discord to ask about a fix for the issue with the controller issue and get told "Don't use a controller"
I really want to love this game but it has left a bad taste in my mouth. I am washing my hands on this one and requesting a refund.

The game was fun. Up until endgame, but all games struggle with that - and the journey to get there was enthralling.
But then I decided to re-install in 2025. My old base is gone and almost none of the mods work.
I guess I'll have to wait until there is something done about mods...

Pretty much Terraria rip-off/clone except top down.
The community for this game, are the same community who get mad at others for not having the same belief's/opinion as them. They also like to snuggle up to access media, PCGamer. Anyone who follows the gaming industry, all know those types of people. Quick to anger, quick to cancel and insult, quick to make assumptions without having clear understanding. This game will become a mess due to the toxic behavior of the community and the lack of communication skill by the developer.
Even the animations are a rip off of Terraria a much more successful game than this will ever become. To think a developer lacks creativity they have to steal basic things like animations, hilarious. Proof in the fact the game needs diverse builds, which the developer wants the community to develop for him and then not give proper recognition.
AVOID this game.
