For The Love of Lovecraft Curator
Casual Roguelike
Evil Heart Fever is an arcade like bullet hell game with a roguelike system. You are an evil entity that must be stopped by celestial forces. There are some nods to lore such as lovecraft, biblical wars, and seven deadly sins but these are really minor things. There are a nice variety of powerups that you can get. When you level you get to choose between three and the power ups stack. There are also some evolution trees which give you a few extra bonuses. The enemy variety seems nice and there are boss angels as well every once in a while.
The Minor Gripes
At it's core this feels more like a score chaser. Since it is also a roguelike you start over every time you lose which will happen often. The start of a run feels pretty slow especially once you've played a few games. Some of the power ups could use a bit better of a description on how it will effect your stats upon selection. A more diverse upgrade system would be fun as well. Perhaps showing the changed numbers as you highlight over them. The background didn't bother me; but I can see why it may bother others since it is a constant spinning vortex. The soundtrack was eventually worn down for me since it was always the same. I eventually started playing my own music. There are limited options in the game to tweak so most things you don't have much control over.

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ pros ♥
+Variety of enemies and upgrades +Different evolution routes in upgrades
(っ>▬<)っ x cons x
-Slow start -Upgrades could use more beneficial information -Limited options
Some of the cons I have with this game could be tweaked out with an options menu from being able to adjust the music and volume to being able to toggle the spinning vortex animation. Despite it's flaws this is still a pretty solid game for just a dollar. The lovecraft references for the sake of the curator this review is written for are very minor but you can still turn into a tentacle/yogsogothian covered green heart and easily abominate yourself with powerups. Game has a fun concept, interesting upgrade system and bearable gameplay, yet has a terrible graphic design. After mere 15 minutes I felt that my eyes were gonna hurt if I were to continue. It really needs a warning for photosensitive epilepsy as the second you run the game, the main menu attacks you with flashing lights.

A really fun multidirectional-shooter-roguelike mashup, and an amazing product for a dollar. The theme feels nice and cohesive, blending Lovecraftian and religious elements for both enemies and the player itself, which works surprisingly well. The game looks alright — nothing groundbreaking, but it's not a hassle to look at. There are a few flaws, such as some bosses being ridiculously hard to defeat, requiring either luck or a fully upgraded character to stand a chance. Also, the library of upgrade items, while decent at around 35-40, could benefit from a bit more variety. Overall, still a solid game for the price.

A good start, but the game needs a lot of polish. There don't appear to be any settings for sound, music, resolution, or anything. Despite there being a "Controls" menu, you can't actually rebind any controls. The "Controls" menu is also the only place that tells you what the controls are, so if you start a game without checking that menu first you probably won't know how to dash. Most of the skills and powerups don't explain what they do. Wisdom, for example. What is that? Exp gain, maybe? No idea. Something like Tesla Coil as a choice - should you get it? You won't know by reading the description. Weapons give you flavor text but literally no descriptions of what to expect from them. You might figure them out after using them a few times, but you also might still be confused. The good news is that it's not a bad game. It's just very basic and feels like it could use a lot more work to bring it up to minimal standards.

Bear with me, this is my first long review. Overall I'm recommending this game, as it was decently entertaining and it's only 1$ (and I got it on sale 40% off). The gameplay is solid enough, basic twin-stick style shooting to take down waves of enemies coming at you from the sides of the screen. Your character shoots at crosshairs where your mouse is located, and can do a quick dash every 2-3 seconds depending on your stats until it reaches the crosshairs. The progression is fairly solid, staying relatively challenging without any real difficulty spikes aside from possibly the bosses, who are chosen at random; some bosses are pretty easy to downright unthreatening, while others can be incredibly difficult to deal with while still fighting the swarms of basic enemies. These bosses show up every so often (with health scaled to your level), and regular enemies stay spawning during your fight with them at no slowdown. You can even end up with multiple boss angels simultaneously if you don't kill each one fast enough. As you kill angels you gain levels and earn perks, a choice of 1 from a random 3 possibilities, thus allowing you to get stronger to face the tougher stock enemies the game will flood you with. You can even get one of five special transformations, each with their own unique perk, by acquiring three specific perks related to the transformation. Pretty simple, but a decent enough gameplay loop for a dollar. Similarly, the graphics are pretty basic as well. Simple 16-bit sprites with minimal animation, with an additional simple attack animation for some of the boss angels. That said, the animations are clear enough in what they're doing, and the archers even have a small recoil on shooting appropriate for a small airborne creature firing an arrow as long as they are. Only your character and the bosses make any sounds, which actually keeps the game's noise down and helps you know when the bosses spawn and when more dangerous attacks are coming. I didn't pay too much attention to the music, but it was fitting for the gameplay and I don't believe it was limited to a single song. However, the game does have numerous flaws. For one, there's no way to change your controls (WASD and mouse) or the game's audio and video settings, in or out of the game. In fact, there isn't even an options menu. With the right steam settings you can manually set up controller and keyboard for the game, but that still leaves you with no way to play the game outside of full screen at full volume. There's also no way to continue your progress in game later, due to no save function. This generally isn't a huge issue, but can be annoying given that it tracks your highest kill count and goes on forever (more on that later). Also unhelpful are the descriptions of the perks. At best these give you a rough idea of what the perk will do, and at worst tell you absolutely nothing. Even the descriptive ones don't usually fully mention what stats will be affected by it, much less by how much. I've created a guide to help explain everything I could, but I feel you shouldn't have to refer to an outside source to know what most of your perks do. There's also no way to check what ones you've gotten after the fact. I think the most disappointing part however is the end of the game. More to the fact, that there IS no end. The story, the game description, these all describe how you are working to open the Hell's Gate and bring destruction to humanity. In the end though, you don't get ANYTHING in game to show that you've "won". When you reach level 300 and finally get the achievement for opening the gate absolutely nothing happens or changes. It's a frankly painful endurance run to even get that far as well, as the game basically stops changing or getting harder for the last 2/3rds of it. At level 100 the next to most powerful enemy starts appearing, at 200 the final enemy starts appearing, but between those gates literally nothing really changes. They don't send higher amounts of enemies at you (at least not noticeably), they don't start spawning more bosses, nothing. I was super disappointed when I got the very last, hardest achievement... and the game didn't even seem to notice. I kept going for a while after that, but nothing changed in the slightest and eventually I just didn't care to stay alive any further. All in all, for a single dollar this game isn't bad. I still got a couple hours of enjoyment out of it, and definitely don't regret my purpose. I'd recommend getting it if you enjoy this style of game. Just be aware that it has its problems, and it's no masterpiece. Recommended, probably like 6.5 or 7/10

I like the game and it has me curious enough to keep trying. Very much a "one more try" game! I have to give the Thumb's Down because the background of the game is an infinitely swirling spiral. It is insane and I can't look at it for long before it makes my physically ill. Dev: Get rid of the spinning background, or let us change it in the settings. Until this is fixed, solid Thumb's Down - it hurts to play and is literally injuring my eyes.

A really fun multidirectional-shooter-roguelike mashup thing, amazing product for a dollar. It's theme feels nice and cohesive, between it's mix of Lovecraftian and religious items, enemies, and the player itself if a nice touch, and works well. The game looks alright, nothing amazing, but it does the job and doesn't hurt to look at. There are only a few flaws with the game, such as what I assume are bosses being really fucking hard to kill, meaning you need to get lucky and be beefed up or have a synergy by the time one comes. There's also the kinda of small library of upgrade items, which is about 35-40, and while that isn't too small of an amount, some more items would be pretty dope. One of the best $1 purchases I've made, worth a buy

Fun little shooter for fans of games like Vampire Survivors. With a dash mechanic (which can be weaponized) and boss angels which fire different projectiles there is a decent amount of variety and challenge. Lots of options to experiment with the upgrades too. At this price it is a no brainer - buy it.
