I won't say it's a great game but I enjoyed it. It's a 2D wanna be ''Dark Souls'' game but way buggier in terms of combat. Don't expect to understand the combat in the first few minutes. You only have light and heavy atack and three slots for spells, you start with only two at the begining of the game. You won't be able to kill the deathworms and the final boss that has two phases that are alike.
Abstract: DON'T BUY!!!
Dev abandoned the game, despite he knows the game is in a bad shape possible, he not removed it from the store, he knows it have bugs, achievements are broken, and still sell this crap for more than $ 1.25, his answer... play others game I made, those are better... L-A-M-E. I just reported it. Rate 0/10 - (☆☆☆☆☆)
thecrow256 [developer] Posted: 14 Sep, 2018 @ 8:04am I am really sorry about the bugs, today I am going to release in its current state. My second year in college started, I am really tired of this game and the bugs that I have 0 understanding of why they happen. Its my first game on steam after all, and I will work hard on another game in a genre that I think I will enjoy making and simpler in execution.
With the money he still make, he could employ someone that could correct all his mess, but... NOOO, let's still sell a broken game to people.

Dark atmosphere, with nice pixel graphics, but play controls are anything but slick. Sometimes they get stuck. It's bad. Game feels unfinished, and honestly for less than a dollar on sale, I wasn't expecting much, but it's not great. Requesting refund.

Controls are clunky. Game even suggests that the delay can be fixed by restarting the game in the dialogue of the game. Movement and jumping feels clunky. Most traps are unavoidable. They appear and hit you without any warning. There's no way to block against enemies so when you attack you just have to take a hit. You hit a game blocking bug about 10 levels in when you get a new ability for your spear. The game gives you 1 shot with it to defeat one enemy but no way to recharge it. Levels all look the same and play the same.

Definitely do not recommend, it is a buggy mess, not even fun to play ironically. Devil's advocate though, the vine pumping animation on the wall is kinda cool, and the little character's helmet in the corner takes damage as the health gets lower, pretty normal nowadays but its a neat touch.
A fantasy styled platform game with some features particular that can improve in something more roguelike.
I have to say i am pretty old so i am used to love old school platforms and that's why i liked this game that can propose a fantasy themed platform with some rpg elements. I liked really this but i have to say that this product has much potential and needs some improvements then i hope devs will read this and evaluate for an evolution of this product and with some patch can insert some feature that can expand the gameplay. Playing this game i had the hunch that it was inspired also by the dark souls series because the mobs encountered have a particular pattern and not just the walking and attacking pattern that sometimes you find in traditional platform games. Just saying, i smiled when i noticed also that some enemy can parry your attacks and also your character have a stamina system that can go easily to zero with some heavy attack. That's pretty unusual for a platform and that's why i suggest this game. At the beginning of the game you can choose some spell that you can use during your journey and after that you can have something else going on and slaying some bosses. These spell have all a cooldown so you must really smarto to manage them and don't use everyting because you can die easily with low stamina and all spells out. It's a really interesting choice and i hope they will expand it in something much more complex. The graphic is really polished for a retro fantasy style and i think it's pretty enjoybale, really minimized but i have found it nice for my eyes, maybe i can also prefer a more pixeled style like many retro games but that's a personal opinion. The sound is simple but enjoyable and it fits well with the game , nothing more to say. Anyway this game has some feature that i think it needs to be fixed or just elaborate. First of all , i think it's really important for a platform game to have a controller support. In this game i noticed there isn't and you can play only by keyboard. Also the keyboard controls are bit weird ( wasd for the movement and jkl-op for attacks /spells). I can understand that this game has many different attack pattern and it's not simple to propose a good keyboard control layout (just saying , you cannot also modify the controls) but i think it's really important to include a controller support for a platform game , also because it really makes the gameplay less enjoyable. The second advice is to make the game much more rpg/roguelike oriented. This game has good potential but in my personal experience is a bit limited in some feature,Maybe i am wrong but it can be interesting if you go on in every gameplay and unlock some new class, spell or weapon as you can go on , like many rougelike that i personally love (Isaac first of all). I think it suits well with this game that has a really dark soul core gameplay that can be improved. I understand that this game is just released so everything can't be perfect but i wan to encourage this and hope will be more expanded in the good gameplay. Give it a try for the price proposed if you like old schooled platform with fantasy theme and a challenging gameplay.

Why am I loving this game? Well mostly because its not complicated, and it gives us that vibe of the first consoles we had as kids. As a game developer I can say they had a good job there developing all the different skills and animations for the character. I love how the skills are unlocked piece by piece, it really got me addicted there. I am really waiting further to see the next updates, I want some new skills to unlock. By the way, the backgrounds are very well made, congratulations to the designer, some good quality stuff there. Thank you for the amazing nostalgic game. :') Recommend the game to people who miss the old times. 10/10

Chamber of Darkness is a retro platformer game which will be sure to take you back to your childhood! Whilst playing the game it reminded me immensely of my childhood playing various games on sega megadrive! The game is currently in early access and there are a few minor bugs which are to be expected but you should expect for these bugs to be ironed out for a smooth game come full release. The game features a very simple yet effecting control scheme similar to games of old, using WASD to move/jump and J K to attack as well as using I O for spells, the game allows you to perform both light and heavy attacks and also features a stamina system meaning you can not just spam attacks and need to manage your stamina when fighting enemies throughout each level. I did however encounter a minor bug with the combat system where sometimes if i was to get hit by an enemy my character would be stuck in an endless falling loop meaning I had to restart the level, however due to the fact each stage is quite short this was not too much of an issue at all. The gameplay itself is what is to be expected of a retro feeling side scroller, where your main aim is to get from point A to B dodging obstacles and fighting enemies on the way to the end of the level with each level getting harder than the last with additional enemies and traps which must be avoided in order to progress through the stages. The audio in the game is very simple and basic yet effective and really helps give the game a retro vibe when you are playing. I enjoyed the game and was a very relaxing game to play and for the cheap price tag I would reccomend you pick up this game as a throwback to your younger days you will not be disapointed, I look forward to seeing where this game goes in the future.

Movement and attacking are really really confusing and buggy. Lack of responsivness, have to press the attach button many times before it registers. Uninstalled after screen 2.

I didin't expect this game to be that solid actually, it impressed me. I like the small graphical details here and there like the holes in the walls with eyes in them looking left and right, the green veins on walls that pulse, paintings and logos that made the game look alive a little bit. The gameplay was really enjoyable, I was able to walkthrough the entire game but unfortunatly it crashed after I beat the final boss after three or four tries. For a game that developed by one person it really offers a lot and my final verdict will be 8.7/10!
A retro fanatasy platformer for all the old school gamers!
Chamber of Darkness is a solid retro platformer style game with rpg elements. I found that the art style and the mechanics of the game took me back to playing the SEGA Megadrive when I was a kid! The game is still in early access, but it is looking like it's going smoothly to being a successful full release. The combat system of the game is quite similar to old school platformers, but it comes with a twist. You can perform light attacks and heavy attacks as well as chaining then together. As you attack, you lose some of your stamina and can render yourself fatigued and unable to fight if you run out. The combat is a little more techinical than first glance as enemies can parry your attacks. You must also time your attacks to make sure you don't get hit by an enemy first. The combat is fun to control, but it can be a little buggy at times. I found that on a couple occations that I would be knocked over by an enemy and I would end up being stuck in a loop of falling over. This wasn't much of a problem though as each section is very short which helps against this problem if it happens. When you start the game you can choose which spells you would like to use from the start, though spells can also be obtained throughout the levels played. Spells have a cooldown timer, which is understandable as this would make the game incredibly easy if you had access to unlimited spell use. The platforming mechanics in this game is as expected in a side scrolling game. You're tasked with jumping across gaps and avoiding spikes/collumns that can crush you. What I did like about these traps is that they didn't insta kill you like in some games of this genre. They damaged you and would only kill you if you were close enough to death. I would also add that you should always keep a look out for hidden paths that you can climb. I managed to find an easter hidden away on one of these paths. The audio is what you would expect from a retro platformer. It fits which the genre and gives a good dungeon explorer feel. I enjoyed playing this game and it is worth the cheap price tag accompanied with it. The only part I didn't feel comfortable with is that the combat feels a little clunky, but I can also say that I don't think the game would feel so retro without this clunky feel. I felt challanged whilst playing this game and the boss levels that you encounter, or what feel like bosses to me, are really challenging and was definitely fun to play. There is a local multiplayer game mode, but unfortunatelty I don't have anyone at hand to play a local game with me to try it. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone after an old school retro style game. It takes you back to the 8-bit days!

Wow yet another negative review. This game for the most part the negativity comes from how badly the game responds to player inputs ALL of my deaths were due to the fact the game refused to read my attack inputs and this happened plenty of times. This is made worse by the fact that jumping is not a button but instead up on the control pad. So avoid this game.

It has potential but the gameplay suffers from feeling clunky and being not very responsive in combat. Also suffered from glitches where my character would become tired and unable to perform attacks in the first few minutes even after I just respawned and should have been fine. I'd give it another chance later, but it's rather frustrating at this time to play. EDIT: The game's getting a lot better - I revisited it briefly and it appears the devs made nice adjustments to combat and, although it's not perfect yet, they are headed in the right direction. PS: Are firebolts meant to be parried by enemies so easily?

"Chamber of Darkness" is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This one is very badly, haphazardly assembled from basic GameMaker Studio platformer functions, to the point it barely works. This is a brawler centric platformer, but there's so many defects in it, I'd rather just get into those... after all, fine plot points are irrelevant when gamers never really played the game seriously. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio. It's possible they developed this using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game has been specifically designed for people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming. The controls and game handling are notably very clunky and unsmooth here. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing. They dropped the ball on this one. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. To make matters worse, there's no mouse input, despite this being sold on PC as if it were a PC game. This is unacceptable and somewhat insulting to PC gamers. It's a good demonstration of the poor attitude the developer has towards PC gamers, and this attitude has resulted in yet another defect in this game. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", The Crow Studios has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. "Chamber of Darkness" didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for finding the first hidden object, trivial to get, but less than 12 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 5 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. "Chamber of Darkness" has the almost unethical price of around $4 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.

I love the game because it brings back a lot of old memories when I used to play games like this, this is a game for the oldschool gamers or just gamers that are more into these 2d games. As it is Early Access there are some gliches and bugs to fix but by playing it you'll see how the actual gameplay is which is really good. It's a must play game if you are a oldschool gamer! :)
