I really wish I could recommend this game, I truly do. I loved the first game, and I wanted to love this one too, but... well, making a sequel is always a fine line to walk, I suppose. Change nothing, and fans will complain it's just more of the same, might as well have just released a DLC expansion-pack or something. Change too MUCH, and fans will complain that it's nothing like the game they previously enjoyed, a sequel-in-name-only, so what's even the point of tacking that name on there? These particular developers sought to thread the needle by changing just ONE thing. Unfortunately, it was the WRONG thing - they added to the first game's perfectly serviceable battle-system a bevvy of Paper-Mario-style 'battle minigames'. They start out fine - pound the button, press the RIGHT button quickly, hold a direction until the bar fills, etc. But every character apparently needed at least two or three DIFFERENT minigames, and so, inevitably, they get steadily more complicated. Indeed, they quickly become frustratingly hard, poorly explained, and above all else OVERLY LONG. In the Paper Mario games, your basic attacks never required much more than a timed button-press, and it was only the special attacks, which you'd naturally use more rarely, that had anything elaborate attached to them - and this feature, alas, they forgot to copy over. Every battle gradually turns into an endless slog as you sit through the same overlong minigame over and over and over again, just to use a basic attack. And for the battles to become a chore, well, that's a death-knell for any RPG. So there you have it. The world is still colorful and fun to explore, the characters amusing and varied, the voicework excellent, and there is loads of secrets to uncover and collect. But with every new character you recruit, you'll hate the battles a little bit more, and for that, I give it a thumbs-down. No great house can be build on a foundation of sand...

The original game in this series, Citizens of Earth, definitely had a good portion of weak spots but I enjoyed the game enough to play through it all. I gave that game a thumbs-up but detailed the flaws very specifically to let everyone know. Now, Citizens of Space still has a good chunk of those flaws, and in fact adds more on top, so I just don't have patience for it anymore. First, to run through some of the the flaws from the earlier game that I think are still present:

Too many enemies to the point where it's very grindy
Unbalanced difficulty
Poor navigation / confusing maps
Too little fast travel locations
In a way, I think that Citizens of Space made some of these aspects worse. The original game physically put the enemies on the map and simply overpopulated them; they'd often chase you too much but you could sometimes avoid. Plus, once you defeated area bosses in the original game, the enemies would start fleeing. Citizens of Space removed this by going back to the old-fashioned RNG of invisible battles, meaning there's nothing you can do about it. One character does have the ability to increase or decrease the RNG of battles, but it's quite a useless feature considering lowering battles too much means you won't level up as you need to. Instead, the game should have proper scaling instead of needing you to do frequent battles. The above problem of course joins the fast travel issue in that it'll take you too long to get between points to leave an area, and you'll trigger too many battles even if you don't want to fight anything. Worse is that Citizens of Space is literally in space and you have a ship to travel between planets, with tons of quests distributed everywhere, to the point where fast traveling should be frequently accessible... Yet it's not. More weirdly, despite the game being oversaturated with battles, the difficulty level has weird spikes. I was on one planet finishing a main story quest where my party was frequently doing 1-hit kills and the enemies did maybe 2 to 5 HP damage (less than 10%) on average. And the experience coming from these battles was usually very little. Upon finishing that, the party had to go to another planet - and enter the difficulty spike! Certain enemies were now taking 4+ hits to kill, while doing 1/3 HP damage to party members. That might not seem bad necessarily, but you have to remember that the game has battles too frequently as it is, meaning these will take up so much time, and I can only imagine what would happen upon reaching the next planet unless I grind experience to death. There is a character that has an ability to turn on "Story Mode" so that you never lose battles, but I mean, that's not why I'm playing an RPG with combat. Balance is what is needed! That's it. Now, the above are all things "surrounding" the combat, but let me talk about the combat more deeply. The original game in the series was very Earthbound-esque all around, including combat. The battle screens took inspiration from it and it was turn-based with characters having different specialties and elements to their attacks. This game went with some Paper Mario inspiration, except still found a way to make that frustrating. In Paper Mario, you generally only time single button presses with quick animations, and even then you tend to only do that with special skills. Citizens of Space decided to make every attack require button mashing, redoing patterns of button presses, special timing minigames, etc. You also have to do minigames each time enemies attack you. Starting early off, some of the attacks take maybe 3 or 4 seconds, but they become more complex over time and can end up taking close to 8 to 10 seconds for one character (or enemy) to attack. That adds up very quickly and is annoying since every character has different minigames with only some attacks sharing the same one. Yet, again, the developers included a character with the ability to turn off the minigames. But guess what? Doing so decreases your damage output... Meanwhile, if you choose to make the minigames more difficult (the character can also do that) it will increase your damage. Honestly, they should've never been there at all/been simplified, or just let you turn them off without affecting your damage. Shortly ago, I mentioned that the first game had a style shared with Earthbound and that is very true. It was clear the game tried to use a lot of aspects from that, and honestly I think it paid off. This game threw all of that out and tried to keep going with silly characters while not quite having an overall theme/style. I think this is due to multiple aspects. Audio in the original game was pretty good, with a good amount of songs that stood out and you could enjoy. In the sequel, I honestly think the music is forgettable. It faded out as I played to the point where I wasn't noticing it (not a good sign), with the exception of a song that was a remix of one from Citizens of Earth. The art style, while it might look nice, starts to feel very generic the more you play, especially with tons of crates and "generic outer space" objects everywhere. Lastly, most of the characters didn't intrigue me as much this time around. I feel like the Vice President in the first game was more interesting than the Ambassador in this one, though the general idea behind both of them is political buffoonery. While the voice acting is still good, after a handful of hours I started skipping dialogue and trying to speed through. Once I realized I was doing that, I looked at everything altogether and decided I don't have the drive to keep playing the game. There's very few reviews for this game, and I see most is positive, but the general thought seems split. Some other reviews say they'd recommend Citizens of Earth more (I'm in that camp), while some think this game improved over the original (which I highly disagree with). If you're questioning playing either of these games, I'd say go with the original.

Hello friends, Today i will be writing a review about the game Citizens in Space. This game is a sequel to Citzens of Earth. Sadly, this version is very buggy and crashed several times on me while playing it. Even though the game is fun, i do not recommend getting this game until the bugs are fixed. Since i have so many negatives with this game, i will only post them: CONS: - The game is a buggy mess. Do not buy this version of the game. I emailed sega about this issues found in this game. They have yet to email me automated answer since last week when i sent the email. I do not expect a email back from them. - The following bugs were found in the game: Quests did not activate correctly, crashing to the desktop, some fights froze after winning them, some fights froze when starting fighting them, and many other minor bugs that made it a hassle to get thru the whole game. Although i enjoyed the game itself, the technical issues i found with the game do not make it very fun. I do not recommend this game due to the bugs and technical issues one can experience in the game. I emailed both sega and eden industries about the issues. IF you can get the game to work correctly, it is fun. Although i played the game fully to experience it and to review it, i asked for a refund due to this version being so buggy. I wish now that i did not purchase this version of the game.

I was a bit worried to purchase this game after seeing a few reviews that mentioned crashes and hangs. I don't own a powerful gaming computer so I was a bit apprehensive at first. Well, after playing it over an hour I must say, this is one of the first games that I actually plan to finish. Not one freeze up, not one crash, no blacked out areas, no need to update my graphics driver. I must just be lucky, right? Anyhow, I love the story, the sometimes corny and sometimes deeper humor, the perfect blend of casual play and slowly growing intensity of the mini-games and battles, the ability to bypass or redo tutorials is very helpful, the game controls are easy to pick up, the learning curve is perfect for me, the animations and voice-overs are top notch! I must find out who voices the Janitor!

I bought this game upon release because I liked the prequel citizens of earth. It is a good game but the issues I have with it are the game crashing glitches that stop me from enjoying it. Particularly when you access the Sheriff's talent or when you use certain attacks in the game that causes the audio to glitch and repeat which will eventually cause the game to crash. Normally I would be okay with this because at the time the game was newly released so I expected patches and hot fixes to be released to fix these issues but up until now those issues are still there. This leads me to think that the developers want to leave their game in that broken state and are only interested in cashing in on the game and not trying to fix the issues that I am sure many gamers are reporting.

The game itself is okay. Nothing groundbreaking, but a decent RPG with a lot of characters to recruit and a good sense of humour. If you played Citizens of Earth, it's largely more of the same. However, over the course of playing the game I crashed several times, softlocked in battles several more times, and had a constant stuttering (freezes for about half a second every 5 seconds) throughout. The stuttering in particular is very annoying, as it heavily detracts from the timed inputs used in battle commands and minigames. There are also numerous other bugs, like the "no minigames" option, which turns off the timed inputs in battles, not actually turning off all of the timed inputs in battles, and a summon that can one-shot anything and everything with absurdly high amounts of damage. If it were completely bug-free, I might consider Citizens of Space better than Citizens of Earth, but I encountered too many problems with it to consider it an improvement.

First of all, erase the concepts that this is in fact a direct sequel to Citizens of Earth. In many ways, it continues along the story; but the systems to play this game are vastly different. They have evolved from their Earthbound-based battle system into something from say Super Mario RPG from the SNES era or Paper Mario from the N64. It is a bunch of minigames for abilities that is mixed with timed QTE events for reducing damage. In that aspect, this game shines and at the same time can be it's downside as some of the minigames are quite tedious. You will find yourself not as much button mashing but wishing your timing was a bit better on some of the heavier costing abilities which consume energy, health, and other various things. Next we have the story; which is actually pretty good. I am about a quarter way into the actual game {I have done a lot of side quests so far}; and am noticing a lot of the stories between the citizens are intertwined quite well into the main plot. This however does fall flat when certain abilities for the Citizens feel redundant in and out of combat since combat is the main stage of this game as you find out when you play. Finally, the music and voiceover work is quite excellent; and I do find myself listening to certain tunes over and over just because they're catchy. The Citizen that can change music also allows you to enjoy certain backgrounds over and over if you do not like the one you are listening to, eventually permanently. Now the negatives of the game, which needs to be stated. The current version is slightly buggy. Certain folks are experiencing random crashes, talents from Citizens unable to be utilized, or various sudden stops for quest lines. I have experienced some of the second, but overall the game has worked quite fine on my machine besides that. I recommend this game with a 4.5 out of 5 Waddles. Get it now before the price goes up.

I really, REALLY wanted to like this game. The first was such a wonderful nostalgia trip that had big Earthbound vibes and even moments that literally took pages from the game (such as the continuous cop battles to recruit the Cop). It was just such a great game, and I was really equally excited to play a game like that set in space. Sadly, like some other reviewers, I can't. Upon loading the game and wanting to tweak the settings, I found that the game freezes the moment I hit settings...or at least the graphics themselves just suddenly stop since I can hear the movements from if I moved on the controller/keyboard, but the graphics are frozen onto the main menu screen. Resetting the game or even my computer doesn't help this, and it happens every time I try to load the game and hit the settings, and I'm forced to force-close via Alt-Ctrl-delete just so the game doesn't continue clocking time. If that's not bad enough, while the game itself will load after hitting New game and it seems like the Settings menu crash is the only problem...we then cut to the next problem: Shortly after you're allowed to move on your own, I go to talk to an NPC...any NPC. Much like that first issue, the game suddenly crashes/freezes right there. I can still hear the dialogue from the NPC and can probably move around, but once again I can't actually see what I'm doing because the graphics have decided to freeze right at that moment I clicked to talk, and stay that way until I force-close the same way as before so that the game doesn't accrue time during that frozen state since the game is still running. From what I've read in the bug thread, this has been an issue reported back as far as barely a day or so after the game initially released, and has never been fixed because it apparently only affects some users and not all. And apparently I'm just unlucky enough to be one of those users that it does affect...though a year+ later you'd think they'd have gotten that bug figured out and taken out. But alas, they haven't. So while some may be able to play this game with no problems, fair warning that some of you who purchase this may run into that same graphical issue that will literally make the game unplayable for you.

Bloody marvellous!!! \o/ It's an absolute crime that this game has gone so unnoticed by the gaming populace, with so little games media coverage and a barren, empty, forum... because it is excellent! So much charm and character, the game is superior to the prequel - Citizens of Earth - in every conceivable manner :) Gorgeous, cute, artwork.. great voice acting.. enjoyable music (Robot Rumble is <3) with a fantastic battle system :) I truly enjoy the way the developers have revamped the "Recruit Citizens" aspect of the game, splitting them into three distinct categories rather than having 40 different party members. Summons: These citizens are called into battle to unleash powerful attacks or heals. Partners: These citizens your Combat citizens by adding to their stats and skill lists. Combat: These are the main party members, the ones you'll outfit with new gear and the ones you'll take into battle ^_^ Truly a mightily enjoyable game (though eghhhhhh... super not keen on the whole "Trump is President of Earth and spends his time golfing" stuff, it's silly.. that kind of modern day politics/gags just date the game and force a particular political leaning, but oh well) and I hope the developers were as proud of this as I was entertained \o/

A delightful, charming JRPG with big bouncy colorful characters. The combat is interactive, unlike the JRPGs of old, more like Stick of Truth. The voice acting of the main character is very good. I like the quests to recruit additional characters to the roster. It makes talking to NPCs interesting because you never know who you can get to join your party!

Citizens of Earth is a comfort game for me, and this game hits some of the same notes -- casual, funny, cartoony, collection-heavy. The art is uglier but whatever. BUT please look at the reviews and the bug report thread on the forum. This game has apparently been abandoned by the creators, and I don't expect to see any bug fixes patched into the steam version ever again. This game no longer even installs for me (it stalls out during allocation of space during installation) so when I wanted to replay it, I found a p*rated version instead that actually works. Edit: Ran into a common bug where if you collect both parts needed for the molten magma fetch quest instead of delivering them one at a time, neither are recognized. I loaded up a save from an hour earlier to replay that part of the game. Beat the boss in that level, and now... every random encounter is just bugged, no menus come up and I have to force quit. This is probably 6 hours into gameplay, and the third critical bug to make the game literally unplayable. PLEASE don't buy this game, the devs will never fix it now that they're working on the Switch version instead.

... When I play the game, everything is all black except for the minimap. I can't see where I'm going, any of the characters, or anything going on. I think the game is bugged, and I have no clue why. I got this game for free, so I feel bad leaving a negative review, but I'm happy to delete it as soon as this bug gets fixed. It makes this game pretty much unplayable.

Unable to play this game due to a graphics problem that causes the screen to freeze whenever you talk to someone, move to a new area or try to change the settings. The game continues to play in the background however your screen is stuck at the point when you tried to do one of these things. This error has existed for over a year according to the bug reporting thread and I have not been able to find any solutions to this issue.

Like the first one even though I hat lots of trouble with it not wanting to work on my 4k screen but this one's even worse ... no way of playing it :( The Developer didn't learn a thing it seems and became only worse so I can't recommend it even though it might probably be a very nice game if it would be playable. Seeing as part one still isn't fixed properly I doubt they will do a better job with this one :(

Citizens of Space has the aesthetic charms of games like Earthbound, Cuphead, and Broken Age - but way better looking than Broken Age. I am still playing through on Steam and have played extensively on Switch as well and am thoroughly enjoying Citizens of Space! This is the sequel to Citizens of Earth we have all been waiting for and has a lot of improvements to the game as well over its predecessor. The graphics are unique and fresh and give a new take on the RPG genre with unique party members, and really fun mini-games. The quips are hilarious, and the ambassador is both charming, and fun to play as with earth-wise implications at hand. Don't sleep on this one! I have been having a really good time with this, and I know you will too if you give it a chance! I haven't experienced any technical issues that some other players are reporting. This game is awesome, and you should be playing too!

A sequel to Citizens of Earth, Citizens of Space is a gem of a game for those that liked CoE. A lot of the gameplay is similar to Citizens of Earth, with turn based combat and enemies visible on the map. The mini games to recruit characters are varied, just as in Citizens of Earth. The only downside to this game is the mini games that you have in combat. Those can get repetetive quickly, however given that the mini games are specific to characters, you can actually tailor your party to the characters whose mini games you like or are good at.

Absolutely every single issue I had about citizens of earth was adressed, the combat is godly this time around and separating the citizens into diferent categories so that every single one that is geared for battle is good for battle was the best desicion about this without compromising the recruitment aspect of the game. I don't have to have certian citizens in my party to activate their talents so that's a headache gone, there are some technical issues still (there was slow down on the field sometimes and some other times the game loaded a gigantic sprite of the MC into the field) but nothing like in the first game. And the art style is so much cleaner this time around going with aliens was a good choice for the art team. Sadly I feel like some of the charm of CoE is gone, sincerely I don't know what it is but the game took me like 4 hours longer to 100% and it felt shorter because it was just a joy to play so I won't complain since I still have citizens of earth.

Overall, Citizens of Space has great characters with typically poor followthru: dont expect amazing rpg components or fully fleshed out / balanced citizens (or use for everything); relax, pick a few of your faves for combat and coast thru and you can have a good time. Would like to see a lot of quality of life stuff, balance changes, etc in the future and bugfixes but its decent enough to play thru.

The game has a lot of the same charm and quirkiness that Citizens of Earth had, while fine tuning the combat and character development. The combat system is refreshing and the combat minigames a nice touch with QoL additions to optionally remove the minigames for a more traditional RPG feel. Would highly recommend to any RPG enthusiast.

The sequel to Citizens of Earth is an improvement on all possible aspects. Combat is totally different with the Paper Mario style battle minigames but it ends up being much more fun and varied now that you can switch between all party members at any time. The art style and music have improved dramatically (I need to listen to this OST somewhere devs). The story follows the same wacky style that doesn't take itself seriously and the characters all have great voice actors to bring them to life. That said, the game still suffers with technical problems and lack of polishing in many moments. I can't help but feel that many minigames were rushed as many of them lack feedback or proper explanations on how they work or what you should do (I don't think I ever got even an "Ok" at the Reporter summon minigame even to this day). Some skills don't work correctly and/or are very poorply balanced, like the Confectioner final skill that costs ALL energy and does less damage than her normal attack, same thing with the Athlete's final skill too. Summons cost all charisma but only very few of them are actually worth using. Getting buffs on all party members that I could easily get with chracters like the Chef, Captain or Angler are not good choices for summon effects as well as many of the damage summons that my characters can outdamage when reaching mid game level and stats. It really feels like the devs didn't playtest correctly (or at all) many of these effects, skills and glitchy interactions outside battle because these are all things that can be easily noticed and corrected. unfortunately the devs stopped updating the game with corrections and that I must say is a very poor decision because these simple fixes would GREATLY improve the experience. Still, regardless of its flaws, Citizens of Space is a huge step forward in the franchise and I can see just how the devs are getting better at this and I honestly hope to see Citizens of Time in the near future haha (or whatever other installment you're thinking of, if any. It would be super funny if Citizens of TIme was actually released though).
