So I know a ton of you are just getting this game for the first time, and it might seem lack luster for you. However, on PlayStation I have around 2-3,000 hours in the game and i'm gonna be fully honest if you're thinking about buying this game.
It's extremely repetitive.
Limited game modes, but a wide array of characters to choose from with customization options.
This is also the first game that I've played where when you see another players cool character build, it makes you want to play that character next.
So if you just wanna play a stressful competitive game, that barely has any content besides the rep system for each individual character, and to slowly unlock new and cool gear while also working at becoming a better player, then this game is for you.
If you get tired of playing the same game modes over and over again, and waiting for several minutes to join a game, or having people troll you/rage quit because of you, then this game is not going to be for you.
This game is strictly for those who just like the aspect of the combat, want to improve and to watch their mains get cooler and cooler gear only for the player to rinse and repeat this process with every single character on the roster. It can get tedious, it can get boring, and even the most pro player of this game usually take month long breaks in-between each session. You play for 2-3 weeks straight, get bored, turn it off for months or even a year and then come back. That's the game-play loop for the most average For Honor player.
Lastly, this is a highly competitive game with a massive skill gap. You're going to be bad at first, and that's fine! Don't rage quit and just keep practicing, put in the hours, find the character that resonates with you, and practice your parries, feints and deflects. Don't listen to all the bad reviews on here, because most of them come from players that are still struggling with the concept of this game, or are from long time players who are upset about how a character is too op or was nerfed too hard. It happens all the time with this game, it's nothing new and it's nothing serious. Apart from the reviews about it being boring or having barely much content, because those technically hold some truth to them.
If you're still interested in this game, by all means give it a shot! Don't say I didn't warn you though, because you're either going to hate this game or become completely addicted to it and try to get your friends on it, but they know better and stay away.
Have fun and try not to die!
[Edit: Here's some tips for new players.]
- Do NOT spend your steel right away for cool executions and emotes. Sure, you might main a cool character for a bit, but at some point you're going to move on from them and main another, that's the game-play loop. So for the time being, save your steel and use it for other things like buying new characters or purchasing Champ status. DON'T JUST WASTE IT ON EXECUTIONS, ORNAMENTS, PASSIVES, ETC.
- Play BOTH the campaign and the tutorial. Once completed fully, you'll be rewarded a ton of steel for your efforts. If you skip the cut-scenes, and rush through the tutorial, you can get it done in about 2-3 hours.
- If you are dying to spend money on this game, then purchase the hero skins for a character you like. The amount of steel that the hero skins cost is criminal, so just use real money at that point. That, or buy the battle passes, because at least the battle pass will reward you with prestige crates, xp tickets, and steel among many other things.
- DON'T WASTE YOUR PRESTIGE CRATES ON LOW REP CHARACTERS. Save them for the love of all that is holy. You can use them when you get your character of choice to a MINIMUM of Rep 7! You can purchase prestige crates for 500 steel, but that's way too much currency for a gamble. As of right now, Ubisoft and the For Honor team won't just let you buy the missing armor you want right away with steel, so your best bet is to just wait and keep playing. It will show up at some point during game play, just be patient.
- Focus on trying to rep up as fast as you possibly can, then when you reach rep 7-8, do it again with your other characters.
- Take advantage of the XP weekends, hero fests (yes this includes playing characters you don't like), and extra loot events that give limited time boosts to loot gains or even limited time gear that might only show up once every year or so.
- If you're goal is to strictly rep up, and you're tired of raging from being ganked by other players, then switch the matchmaking to PvAI and turn matchmaking on. You'll still get really good XP, steel and will still be able to complete your daily orders by doing this. This way you can also avoid toxicity from the average For Honor fan base while you practice your characters to get a hang of the way they play. It's great for practicing the basics and for leveling up.
- If you manage to save enough steel, BUY YOURSELF CHAMPION STATUS. This isn't up for debate. You will earn a TON of XP just for having it, plus your team mates who are also just trying to level up as fast as possible will appreciate having you on the team.
- Try not to get mad and remember that this is just a game. If emote spam is upsetting you, people spamming "Good fight!" or "Wow!" or you getting double teamed where one player is constantly trying to guard break you to allow the other player to kill you with no problem and it's getting you really stressed out, remember you can always leave the game, or if you don't want to get a penalty for leaving mid-match, you can complete the round, then leave and take a break. Make sure you're in the right head space and not overly stressing yourself out. You can also resort to shutting certain things off in the settings like the chat, allowing you to be free of the minor stress of someone trolling you by spamming "Good fight" after killing you. I personally mute the game and put on a podcast while playing to avoid dealing with toxic players or to keep me in the right head space.
- Lastly, if you don't like waiting to rep up, or think it's going to take too long, you can rep up any character several times in a day. That is also including breaks in-between, not just you sitting all day 24/7 just grinding. It can feel sluggish, but trust the process, play breach with other players and just be patient. Rep up once or maybe twice a day if you want, or push it to three of four times a day if you can handle the grind. I think you can rep up at least once or more within just a few hours of game-play. It just takes patience, and though it's going to get boring and repetitive, if you want to really rep up, you'll need to put in the work.
