world at war is what i call the black sheep of the series no other cod has tackled the WW2 setting to this brutal or any WW2 game that i can think of it's a good game still holds up in the shooting i'd honestly just recommend it for campaign and zombies since this is one of the few cods that can easily be modded with custom maps and other properties just don't expect an alive multiplayer overall
8.5/10 never buy on full price

🔥 Call of Duty: World at War – When War Got Brutal (and the Zombies Showed Up)
Forget the heroism. Forget the medals. World at War didn’t come to make you feel good about war. It came to slap you in the face with a flamethrower and scream “THIS IS HELL.”
This is Call of Duty at its most raw, gritty, and unapologetically savage. Bayonets, burning villages, screaming in Japanese. This isn’t a Spielberg movie. This is a survival horror disguised as a war game.
🎮 The Campaign?
You play as both a U.S. Marine in the Pacific and a Soviet soldier marching toward Berlin, and neither journey is sunshine and rainbows.
The game drops you into the mud, the blood, and the madness. Flamethrower in hand, enemies screaming “BANZAI!” as they leap from bushes — this is PTSD in pixel form.
And then... there's Reznov. Voiced by Gary Oldman. Loud, unhinged, iconic. He doesn’t talk. He preaches war.
🧟 Oh yeah and then they added ZOMBIES.
What started as a bonus mode became a global obsession.
Trapped in a ruined house with only a pistol and bad aim? Classic.
Round 1: easy.
Round 10: crying.
Round 20+: your controller is sweaty and you’ve stopped trusting your friends.
🧠 Gameplay Feel:
Guns feel weighty and vicious. The bolt-action rifles snap. The flamethrower sizzles.
Limbs fly off. Heads pop. It’s not “clean” war like Modern Warfare. This one’s dirty.
🎵 Sound Design & Atmosphere?
Screams in the jungle.
Explosions in the rain.
Reznov yelling in the distance.
This isn’t a game. It’s a fever dream soaked in blood and history.
Final Verdict:
World at War walked so that modern zombie modes, gritty shooters, and chaotic co-op could run.
It’s underrated, unforgettable, and unapologetically brutal.
🔟/🔟
“You will not survive.” — Nazi Zombies intro voice
And you didn’t. But it was glorious.

Please make compatability support for steamdeck, this is the stand-alone best COD experience I've ever even had and hands down even over modern warfare and black-ops since it's release and all the garbage that COD has been modernizing the franchise based on money hungry devs, with absolutely no love for the series and it's community🥺

Call of Duty: World at War marks a significant return to the gritty, brutal combat of World War II, delivering a raw and intense first-person shooter experience that stands out in the franchise for its darker tone and more mature storytelling. Unlike some of its predecessors that focused on heroic, polished portrayals of war, World at War embraces the harsh realities of conflict, presenting players with visceral battlefields filled with desperate struggles and moral ambiguity. This approach gives the game a heavier emotional weight and a sense of authenticity that resonates throughout its campaign.
The single-player campaign is a highlight, unfolding across multiple theaters of war including the Pacific and Eastern Fronts. Players experience the war from the perspectives of American Marines and Soviet soldiers, offering diverse viewpoints and missions that range from intense infantry assaults to stealthy infiltration operations. The narrative doesn’t shy away from the brutal nature of the fighting, incorporating graphic and unsettling moments that underscore the human cost of the conflict. Missions are varied and well-paced, combining large-scale battles with tighter, suspenseful encounters that keep players engaged and invested in the story.
Gameplay-wise, Call of Duty: World at War builds on the solid mechanics established in previous entries, featuring fluid movement, responsive shooting, and a satisfying arsenal of period-appropriate weapons. The addition of new features like flamethrowers and nail guns enhances the tactical variety, allowing players to approach combat scenarios in different ways. The game also introduces the "Feats" system, rewarding players for accomplishing specific objectives during missions, which encourages more strategic and skillful play rather than straightforward run-and-gun tactics. Enemy AI presents a credible challenge, using cover and coordinated attacks that make encounters feel dynamic and intense.
Multiplayer is another major pillar of World at War, praised for its fast-paced and chaotic matches that capture the brutality of WWII skirmishes. The variety of modes, from classic team deathmatch to objective-based games, keeps the experience fresh, while the customization options for weapons and perks allow players to tailor their loadouts to their preferred playstyle. The inclusion of the iconic Zombies mode is a standout addition, offering a cooperative survival experience that quickly became a beloved staple of the series. This mode adds a fun, replayable twist to the game’s otherwise serious tone and has been expanded in numerous sequels and spin-offs.
Visually, the game effectively captures the grim atmosphere of WWII battlefields with detailed environments, weather effects, and realistic animations. While the graphics may not match modern standards today, at the time of release, the visuals were impressive and contributed significantly to immersion. The sound design is equally noteworthy, with authentic weapon sounds, ambient battlefield noise, and a haunting musical score that heightens the emotional impact of the campaign and the adrenaline rush of multiplayer combat.
In conclusion, Call of Duty: World at War is a memorable and impactful entry in the Call of Duty series that combines a hard-hitting single-player campaign with robust multiplayer and an innovative co-op Zombies mode. Its commitment to portraying the brutal realities of World War II sets it apart from more sanitized interpretations of the era, offering players a gripping and challenging experience. While it may feel dated compared to newer shooters, its gameplay fundamentals and the emotional weight of its narrative ensure it remains a beloved classic for fans of the franchise and WWII shooters alike.

Call of Duty: World at War is brutal, visceral, and cinematic. The campaign barely stops to breathe, it’s light on exposition, and just keeps pushing forward at this relentless, high pace that grabs you from the very first mission. The World War II setting is phenomenal here. It’s gritty and horrifying in a way that feels more honest than most games even attempt. Reznov and Roebuck are such a great characters too, adding so much personality to the chaos around you. They really feel like a friend you’d want in a war. Gary Oldman as Sergeant Reznov and Kiefer Sutherland as Sergeant Roebuck deliver believable people you could imagine finding in World War II. The game is dark, gory, and horrifying. It’s a game that will put you in the dead of night, crouched in overgrown bushes with rain pouring down, lightning flashing across the ground, and then out of nowhere the Viet Cong come flying out of the trees and the undergrowth, ambushing you and your squad before you even know what hit you. Moments like that are burned into my memory. The game never hides how brutal war really was. This Call of Duty doesn’t feel like what the series is today. It’s so much more. World at War is integral to my upbringing as a player. The campaign alone is unbelievable. This grim, cinematic experience that still stands out in the series. The credits roll, and instead of just fading to black, you wake up in a bunker, armed with nothing but a pistol, and are forced to survive wave after wave of Nazi zombies. Yes, actual Nazi zombies that Nazi march forward toward the player. Zombies became countless nights for me, playing with friends, yelling into headsets, trying to survive one more round. It’s crazy what this side mode spawned. In the campaign you can see what assets they used to made the zombie maps and sound effects. I found that being able to witness where this assets original came from to be super interesting. This game is dark, fast, relentless, and unforgettable. A high point of the entire Call of Duty franchise and a perfect example of what the series is capable of when it leans into atmosphere and creativity instead of just spectacle. It’s no secret Call of Duty was better when it pushed limits, was controversial, but especially here. The opening scene has an extremely graphic torture scene that sets the tone for the rest of the campaign. Call of Duty used to really give special experiences, and it’s now unfortunately too big now to ever care about anything other than growing in scale.

The first Cod I played and one of my first played games in general, Still as good as I remembered. The story feels so much darker and more personal then modern day Cod, last time they did a WW2 game they where to scared to have the Axis in the game meanwhile Hitler is screaming down the speakers of the occupied city's during some of the missions in this game. Will be coming back to play the story again at some point.

I've never payed most of the older call of duty games besides MW 1 and 2, and WaW has a great campaign and zombies I would reccomend for anyone who like call of duty or ww2 games. It even feels more realistic than Bo 6 and MW 3, zombies is also way better than bo 6 get this game because it is that good for only 20 dollars.

Wow. When games used to be fun and not just a chore or absolute sh*te. Pro tip if on Windows 11 and you get a black screen. Windows + R - type appdata and press enter. Go into Local/Activision folder and delete CodWaW folder if it's there. Also clean out your NVIDIA shader cache if that still doesn't work. What a fun game - single player campaign lives up to the hype for once.

So the game worked fine when I first bought it, few months later I come back to it it constantly crashes right when I start up a mission. The game is unplayable. I didn't mess with the files or anything but its just messed up. I have played it on different consoles before and it worked perfectly on there. Most of my play time is from multiplayer which is also a buggy mess but worked somewhat. COD: WAW is an amazing and immersive game when working right but this isn't the place to play it from my experience.

I hate Activision, however, this is a relic from the good era of video games with solid gameplay and mod support.
The Custom Mapping scene for this game, albeit a somewhat "Dead Art Form," still has some high-quality maps being released (Such as Black Ops 6's Terminus, released in April of 2025) that every self-entitled Zombies player should play at some point in their lives, lest they miss out on some great maps made by very talented modders.
Be sure to grab the T4M patch (which, once installed properly, will automatically prompt you on launch and install the 4 Gigabyte .exe patch) for better overall performance and necessary script extensions for more complicated custom maps to function.

A phenomenal return-to-form for the series in WW2. If you are looking for a great campaign, you've found it. Sadly the multiplayer is full of hackers so you'll have to avoid that.

很有味道的一款老游戏,画面和手感都远远落后于现如今的fps界,但是玩起来就是莫名带感,剧情比很多新游戏都沉浸,老制作组确实是有两把刷子的,8.7分。

Very fun video game where you can shoot nazis and you can also shoot zombies (also nazis) and it's fun and the video game is the complete product and not just a platform to sell you microtransactions. The campaign is also co-op which they almost never did after this game

The last bastion of real zombies NOT catered to little kids like modern cod zombies. 2 hit downs with no jug, harder point build up, more skill required than spawning with an AR in a big open map. It's the reason all my friends can't stay half as good as me in any zombies lol

Best CoD ever made, nothing that comes out today even comes close to the caliber of this game, I still remember being 8 years old and playing it at my friends house on his ps3 for the first time. the ominous music, the gore, the griminess, it was all just so captivating, the game isn't scared of mature themes and doesn't try to be political, it just feels like a raw and authentic WW2 game, the campaign, multiplayer & zombies are all good, I still have countless memories of playing custom zombie maps with my friends and never have I once had a bad time playing this game.

I will never buy any of the new Cod's just because their just so money hungry and also the insane amount of custom weapon skins and skins for your character that they push out is just some real corporate greed. But the Older ones I will never hate on because back then Activision and Treyarch actually had a soul and made them enjoyable and yes they do have some downsides but its really about quality then quantity. Its Just sad to see company's like these turn to greed for more profit. I Also Don't want Activision to become like EA where they milk the games to hell and back and then drop them dead once they cant make anymore money from it. But also Cod Infinite Warfare is not even playable from some of the reviews I have seen and the fact that probably most people paid full price or maybe not like on a sale just to get a game that crashes alot
