Man... I bought this game on sale for 1.50$ for the sake of owning every Witcher game available. I never planned to play it, especially after giving it a try for the first time and not understanding anything. I hated how the combat felt, i disliked the movement and the fact that there is 80% of dialogue and 20% gameplay, did not captivate me enough. However, i gained enough courage once again, promised myself, before the Witcher 4 comes out and even this game gets a remake, i MUST play all the witcher games, so i did. (i did finish Witcher 3 4-5 years ago). If you endure the first 2-3 hours of the game, i promise you, the combat will grow on you, as people mention, it will not be annoying as i enjoyed it actually. Graphically, looks great too despite it being almost 20 years old. I will admit though, because of social media and consumption of short videos, my brain could hardly play the game for 20 minutes without yawning, since there are a lot of dialogues, but every time i passed that 20 minutes, it would capture my attention so much that hours could go by listening to witcher speak and i would not even realize. Took me around 60 hours to complete it with a lot of side missions. It takes some time to get used to how missions work, how the inventory can be managed, but once you get a hang of it, the game just feels and plays perfectly. With the addictive environment, which changes after every chapter. I fell in love with it... the swamps, the field, the kingdoms, every time i went there, my eyes would be pleased. I almost forgot the characters, man, i loved Siegfried. From the time i met him, he was always on my side, even though he is not that high in ranks, we help each other and eventually he gets at the top. He is a little clumsy, but i respect and love that man. Every time i had a chance, i always helped him. Fascinating thing is that, the Salamandras are the enemies and you both fight them as almost like brothers. Vincent was another character that you might be suspicious of being a traitor as many of them might be, but he is just a chill guy with some surprises. Dandelion, though annoying, he is always on your side. Geralt was refreshing, from Witcher 3 to Witcher 1, i was impressed by his looks, he almost seems like a teenager, but someone who is 40 at the same time. Man, just play it, there is so much to talk about, i could go on and on about the other female characters to how the story follows one linear path and then divides into two amazing parts. There was only one minor issue, sometimes the characters would not be where they had to be. For example, i had to find a Dwarf in chapter 3, one of my friends, the mission said he would be somewhere on the street or in the inn, but i could not find him anywhere, so i just left the mission completely and then he popped up in chapter 4. Trust me, just endure a few hours from the beginning and once you understand how things work, you are going to love it.

It captures scenery incredibly well. The storyline and quest sequences are also very well-made. The combat is something you'd take getting used to, but the potion system is by far the most book-accurate than any of the other games. It is a game released in times when devs knew how to create atmosphere in their games, but were experimental with gameplay mechanics, a complete polar opposite of today's industry. I recommend you to play it if you are a fan of the series, and be forgiving of the combat system, at least in the first 2 hours of your playtime.

The Witcher 1 is straight-up amazing. I’m totally in love with this game. I remember the first time I played it, I was like 9 years old it was freaking awesome. This game is pure love, but honestly, for gamers nowadays, it’s kinda tough gameplay-wise, so they might not really get into it. Still, I totally recommend everyone give this masterpiece a shot you’ll end up loving it for sure!

Classic. A remake is in the offing, but at full current price of $10USD it is a buy, whether for nostalgia or just a first go at a great game. 7/10 at full price, Just gets better with discounts!

This is my FIRST Steam review, I couldn't bare the thought of not warning others to stay away from this digital catastrophe. Seeing the trailers for the new Witcher 4 game, I decided to get into this series, starting from its roots. I had already owned the trilogy but never got around to it. I was prepared to give this a huge benefit of the doubt considering its age as some of my favourite games are even older than it. If you are like me, and plan on trying this game, know that I have never been more wrong in my ENTIRE life. This game was by far the most miserable and agonizing experience I have EVER had the displeasure of playing. I am a very tolerant person when it comes to games that may be considered flawed by many. Nothing could have prepared me for something like this. The combat is without a doubt, the most boring and painfully tedious system in all of gaming. You do nothing but left click every few seconds and the game fights for you. Half the time you will be fighting and notice half your HP is gone. The game gives little to no feedback that you are even being attacked. Consistently throughout the game, you will be swarmed literally instantly after a cutscene ends, with no time to react. You are guaranteed to take damage. Towards the end of the game, you will be stunned every few seconds by seemingly nothing. Additionally, the assassination animations take so long and have NO I-FRAMES, meaning you can and will be attacked constantly with no way of protecting yourself. The game is buggy to all hell, from NPCs freezing and not doing as they're supposed to, to game-breaking glitches that cause you to become hard stuck and forced to reload. For example, in chapter 2, the little boy that approaches you and tells you to go to meet the dude that sent him, if you don't go immediately, your mission won't be able to progress and your game will be stuck. There wasn't a mission or quest that I genuinely enjoyed. The fetch quests, running up and down the map is so tedious and time consuming, if there was a better mode of transportation, or fast travel, the game would be closer to 20 hours rather than 40. The game splits quests into Primary and Secondary. Anyone with a brain would assume that this means main and side quests, but apparently not, as some main quests are not compulsory and some side quests are. The characters are boring and bland, the voice acting is robotic, I can't for the life of me, muster up a fond memory of this game. At all times, I was either bored out of my life, or furious over a bug that just happened. If you are interested in the Witcher series like I am and wanted to start here, please, watch a YouTube summary on the story. I ignored this advice from my friends and wasted almost 40 hours of my life. P.S. If you rate this game anything higher than a 2/10, I believe you are unfit to function in society, and belong in a mental institution.

Playing this game in 2024 has been both surprising and eye-opening, not just for what it offers, but for what it represented at the time. It’s one of those rare titles that, despite its age, still manages to convey something special. And it does so without relying on visual flair or modern polish. Yes, the years show: the clunky animations, the stiff combat system, and an interface that demands a bit of patience. But once you're immersed, all that fades into the background. The mature tone, the weight of your decisions, and the way Geralt’s world is handled still have more personality than many modern RPGs. The storytelling takes its time. It builds atmosphere, tension, and characters slowly but meaningfully. And while it might feel a bit rough at the start, once it clicks, it doesn’t let go. I was genuinely impressed to see how a 2007 game can still be this enjoyable today, not out of nostalgia, but on its own merits. It’s not a game for everyone. It’s dense in places, but also bold, unique, and clearly made with heart. And if you’ve played the later entries, this is the perfect way to see where it all began. Just a heads-up: if you don’t save often, a wraith will absolutely ruin your day.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut is a gritty, ambitious RPG that laid the foundation for one of gaming’s most iconic franchises. While it shows its age in some clunky mechanics and dated visuals, it more than makes up for it with rich storytelling, a morally complex world, and a refreshingly mature tone. You step into the boots of Geralt of Rivia, a monster slayer navigating a realm where good and evil are rarely clear-cut. What stands out most is the branching narrative—choices you make early on can echo across hours of gameplay, often in surprising and impactful ways. The combat system, while unconventional and rhythm-based, becomes second nature with practice and adds a unique flavor to the experience. The Enhanced Edition significantly improves stability, translation, and performance over the original release, while the Director’s Cut restores adult content that aligns with the darker tone of the source material. It's not a game for everyone—there’s a learning curve and a bit of jank—but for those willing to look past the rough edges, The Witcher offers an unforgettable journey into a world of monsters, politics, and moral ambiguity. A must-play for fans of deep RPGs and anyone curious about where Geralt’s legendary story began. Rating: 8/10

The game's first actual bossfight, a minuscle amount of hours into the game mind you, is harder to beat than the grandiose Eredin fight at the VERY END of tw3. It's hilarious.

Played The Witcher on hard — an excellent game that really makes you sweat, especially during the fight with Azar Javed.
Unfortunately, I made the wrong choice in the Berengar storyline and got his help instead of the amulet. He turned out to be... not exactly helpful in the final battle.
I played this after finishing the third game, and it was anything but boring. The atmosphere, story, and dialogue are all top-notch. The graphics still look surprisingly good even today. If you’ve played The Witcher 3 and are wondering whether it’s worth going back to the first one — absolutely. It’s a strong and memorable beginning to a truly legendary series.

I recommend this game to people who are trying to get into the Witcher series like i am, if it seems odd how its played push through it cause trust me it gets easy to get used to after a few hours and is a ton of fun

As a long term RPG fan and The Witcher fanatic (excluding the Netflix series), I finally decided to go for the first Witcher game. The sound is nice, the atmosphere amazing and the characters are mostly well written and somewhat well voiced. From that perspective, I can thoroughly recommend the game to other fans of the series. However, the combat is something that almost killed the game for me. The mix between randomized choreographic elements reminds in a dice induced taiko game (taiko = Japanese drums; they have those rhythm games everywhere in Japan in public arcade halls). One gets used to the combat, but its clumsiness and randomness are guaranteed sources of frustration and rage. If you can stomach this, you will be rewarded with a good story (at least so far, as I just started the game around 10 hours ago).

When I started the game, I had a feeling it was going to be a giant waste of time. The combat is clunky, the animations are poor (yes, even for 2008), and the game play was a slog. But I don't think I've ever been more rewarded for sticking with a game despite its glaring flaws. The story is excellent, and once I got to chapter 3 I didn't need any more motivation besides my own desire to see the rest of it. Your choices are integral and will impact the environment in the present and the future. It'll be hard to get into at first, but keep trying and it should pay off.

For such an old game, The Witcher handles player choice in a way that is only matched by other Witcher games and Baldur's Gate 3. It's honestly really surprising how good this game is considering it was CDPR's first attempt at making one.

I started out on Witcher III and fell in love with the story and the lore, so much so that I actually went out and bought the books the game is based off. This game was really incredible mainly for the story and world. It has that old game charm and feel with the combat being simplistic but fun. However, the gameplay can get exausting and the game is poorly optimized. I had loading screens that lasted like 3 minutes each. The questline has you entering the city and leaving the city over and over and the loading screens really piled up. Im very excited to see the remaster of this game and I believe the remaster will make this game one of the best fantasy games.

Currently in chapter 3, will update this when I finish the game. It's honestly not as jank as I thought it would be. Combat is rhythm based, where u have to click when the sword icon is flaming and the animations are honestly kind of clean. Of course, I do like the dialogue and the quests in this game so far, as they feel like they have a real impact in ways that you couldn't even imagine being possible. I do think that the romance cards are a little dated and cringe (it's still kind of funny though), but I think my biggest issue with this game so far is how much time you spend just running between locations (it's boring). So far the highest I could give this game is a 3/5, we'll see how much it changes after I finish it.

The Witcher, in my opinion, is the 2nd best game in the current Witcher trilogy. There is a lot of character and passion that went into this game. The graphics & gameplay (mostly combat) has not aged greatly, but the story and characters alongside the world building creates a fantastically charming experience. I briefly began playing the Witcher 3 years ago but put it down and came back to the series later. I decided to get the full Witcher experience by first reading the books, then playing the games in order. Yes, the combat is slower & an odd timing-based system, but I can't recommend playing this game enough. Although you can play Wild Hunt without playing this game, I feel as though I appreciate the characters in that game a lot more because of seeing them throughout not only the video games but also the books.

First Witcher I played was 3: The Wild Hunt, which was so good I wanted to go back and play 1 and 2. I was hesitant considering how long ago The Witcher was made, but the enhanced edition does an amazing job making it feel a little more youthful. The content is very engaging and carries a deep story-line. 10/10 would recommend

For some reason I never finished The Witcher when it first came out, I don't even remember why - distracted by another game perhaps? Anyway, now, almost 20 years later, it still stands as one of the greatest action RPGs. The story, the characters, the worldbuilding - CDPR took everything that made Sapkowski's books amazing and made it even better. The game even looks not that outdated by today's standards: the textures are low res, the models lack details, but the art style is really solid, and visually The Witcher really translates that feeling of low fantasy world Sapkowski created. Great soundtrack only improves the immersion: not as good as in The Witcher 3, but still extremely atmosperic. The only mediocre thing is the battle system, but it never was a strong suit of the series. Still, you get used to it, and despite being worse than in the later Witcher games, it still serves it's purpose. I'd say it's even ok, and the game is pretty easy anyway, especially when you unlock more elixir and oil recipes, and also learn new talents and get better swords and armor. Bottom line, the game is a must play. I know CDPR is working on a remake, but the original is good enough after all these years. Just give it a couple hours to get used to - in the beginning the game might be a bit rough because of the clunky battle system.
