The Surge

The game has a lot of potential, but unfortunately, you experience more frustration than enjoyment. Repetitive combat system, little enemy variety, frequent deaths due to falls, and a maze-like level design. I couldn't force myself to complete the game.

I wanted to like this game. The combat was good and the targeting specific parts of an enemy was interesting. The world and story were compelling to me. BUT the level design is so tedious and confusing that I was never having fun. The game sends you in circles without medbay access. Many times I found myself lost with tons of scrap (souls) but would die in an unknown location without a clear path back. Plus the timer to pick up your scrap puts pressure on retrieving dropped scrap; fighting enemies extends the timer but a random death will lose all dropped scrap. It feels like they misunderstood what makes dark souls level design good (the feeling of being lost without being truly lost); often I would find a lift or door to open...only to find I still had no clue where it took me. Ultimately, I can't recommend the game due to the frustrating level design.

The Surge is a very challenging, yet manageable game. The world structure is very clear and features numerous interfaces, making it easier to reach your goal. Overall, it's an extremely entertaining game.

Extremely fun combat system. Most bosses are challenging and fun. Level design is one of the most stand-out features of this game. I didn't pay enough attention to the story. It's fun enough just battling through each new area.

Can feel a bit jank depending on what you're used to, some enemies can feel a bit bs, but at the end of the day, I really, really like this game a lot. This was also my first souls-like game I played after I got into Dark Souls via DS3, and honestly, not only did it give me what I wanted, but I also found the story really interesting. If you like souls games, and sci-fi, I'd 100% recommend this game. At the time of me making this review, I have beaten the game multiple times years ago, and recently replayed it with a friend watching, still enjoyed it as much now as I did back then.

Good sci-fi souls-like game the gameplay is fun. The fighting system is very good.

One of the most unique and interesting souls-like game that I've seen and played. No cutscenes, no videos, just pure game. The magic happens when you try to connect with the NPCs in game, seeing their behaviours, listening to the audio-logs and stuff and exploring the world as a whole. It genuinely was a bitter-sweet experience with some elements of mess up situations. All that said, I will recommend you to play this game, especially if you want to check a different type of souls-like game. P.S. - Make sure you play both the DLCs before completing the main game. This is how they were designed to be. I did the mistake of trying to complete the DLCs after the main game and I was in for a surprise.

At first I bought this game on a whim because I had some money left over from a Halloween or Christmas event (I honestly forgot haha) but it ended up being the best game I've ever played.

This game solidified my hate for souls-like games. There is nothing fun about this terrible game and this awful genre. There is nothing fun about dying a million times and repeating the same fight just to do it again and again with other enemies for a whole 50 hours. there is nothing fun about enemies that one shot you. There is nothing fun about hard, miserable, extreme and punishing f*ck you mechanics that make every minute of your gameplay a complete miserable slog to push through. There is nothing fun about convoluted gear progression that forces you to google how it works to understand it because of how terribly its introduced. There is nothing fun about confusing level design that forces you to backtrack a million times and god forbid you die from an unfair one shot mechanic, you lose an hour worth of progress. There is nothing fun about constant stuttering, visual bugs and terrible optimisation. There is nothing fun about low effort voice recordings sprinkled throughout the map as a substitute for a proper story because the developers were too lazy to do anything else. There is nothing fun about clunky controls, terrible mechanics, stun locking and an infuriating stamina system that boils down to you standing awkwardly while getting hit until the game allows you to move again. There is nothing fun about this game, and there is nothing fun about the Souls-like Genre. and if it's not fun, why should I even bother? I gave this game and this genre a chance, I really really did. There is no genre in the gaming industry that I can't enjoy. I can find even a little bit of fun out of the worst games on offer, yet I can't find any in this game and genre. I am glad masochists finally got their own little genre of games to be miserable in, but I am not one of them. This is just not for me and i'm done giving it a chance. This game broke me. and I wish I can refund it. 4/10

This souls like although it feels complex it's actually easier than it looks like

The setting is an industrial complex which is run by some corpo scum, however they did care enough to put lots of guardrails so my deaths due to gravity went down by a factor of ten. It is also a bright industrial complex with lots of colors and is quite interesting to look at. I have had enough of others borrowing too much from the 'Dark' part of the genre's name. No swamp level either. No long boss runs too. Such quality of life. The story does not require YouTube channels to conduct an analysis, while still leaving room for interpretations. I believe that I will face substantial difficulty in going back to combat which does not use this game's limb targeting. This system gives allowance for a slightly-easy mode in exchange of less rewards, if you have the difficulty-tolerance of a peanut, like myself. Bosses drop weapons when you cut their parts and special buffed version of those weapons if you beat them the hard way, which to the chagrin of many, is not communicated in-game. You either have to stumble upon it or rely on word of mouth. The Surge stands on its own two feet without being a clone of the big guy in the space. And hey, it goes on sale for much lesser making it a great deal. Certainly one of the dark horses of the genre, pun not intended. Give it a fair chance and you will enjoy it.

Decent Souls like, great atmosphere however the level design can be very very confusing, bosses have some very interesting 'hardcore kills' where players must do specific challenges, however most bosses can only be poked at and then ran away from making combat feel very 1 dimensional

Wow the combat sucks. Its so boring. Skyrim had a better combat system than this garbage. How a second one was ever greenlit is beyond me. If you like the combat from Darksouls, Elden Ring, and other title--THIS IS NOT THAT. Its far simpler and way more reptitive. Its harder to dodge and you cannot upgrade your stats builidng the charchter you want. Instead you have to collect parts from others by targeting specific body parts and cutting them off with a finisher. Its sounds fun, but i ensure you; IT IS NOT.

Great game, slow but in a good way however quite tedious in some areas~

The main parts of the gameplay, are excellent. And then there are boss fights - which operate under completely different rules, as if said boss was from a completely different game.

I was really into this game about 2 or 3 years ago, I think I got to the Nucleus and gave up since I couldn't find my way around. Recently, I felt the itch to play a soulslike and decided to go back and finish the Surge. Overall, the game is really good. I think it looks great, has enjoyable combat, a good atmosphere, and good uniquely themed dlc. There are a lot of cool environments and I always enjoy a sci-fi apocalypse story like this. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in soulslikes, even though it is significantly easier/less tightly designed than Dark Souls. The only criticism I have is the environments also look very similar, and it is very easy to get lost. This was especially bad in the nucleus, but was doable in the end. I look forward to the Surge 2.

Amazing game if you have the patience required for heavy souls-like games.

why does the dodges not have any i-Frames >:( also bigger armor barely does anything and it slows your attacks down a lot

Last edit: I just got 100% (all achievements) just to prove my confident opinion. and no such "git gud" or "you just haven't played enough" things can do anything to me. This is the first game that makes me want to create more accounts just to give negative reviews. edit: I started a NG+ just for collecting all remaining achievements and went pass half of the game but I made a mistake, there is a place that the game places it first but I shouldn't interact with it. like I have to come back there later. yeah I just interacted it without knowing and I already fcked up all my playthrough. also the last boss in NG+ mostly or just oneshot me like my gears have no armors at all. wtf is this shit. also I played with Mouse&Keyboard after tried with controller first. so there's no way I could dodge to a wrong direction. just w-a-s-d and my keyboard worked fine.The problem was that I just always dodged to the wrong directions like I wanted to dodged sideways but instead the game just made me dodge toward the enemy, led to my deaths too many times. I just hate this game more and more. This is the first game that made me think about creating more accounts just to give negative reviews. but that just dumb, right? like I'd give them more money too. but that's that.
