Rifter is a very refreshing take on a "hardcore" platformer that relies on enjoyable grappling mechanics. It's basically designed for a speedrunner community because you get ranks depending on how you perform. It seems like you have to manually enable leaderboards, which is a nice gesture if you want to avoid that competitive pressure. The first 20 minutes I had a hard time with default controls. You should probably go to controller settings and check the "classic controls", see if that makes it more comfortable. Also, you can rebind the keys and buttons. The game settings are very good in general, especially for this type of game.
Obviously, the game has a very stylish aesthetic, although I feel that variety in environments is lacking; I got to the second planet and the environment is essentially a color swap. Not that I don't like the way the game looks, it just needs more backgrounds and unique detail, otherwise, it may feel somewhat repetitive. Each planet has several towers which are like sets of missions and challenges. Most levels have secret collectibles that can be spent on skills trees. Yes, the game has skills trees despite not being an RPG, granted they are very linear and not all that interesting.
The selling aspect of Rifter is the dynamic platforming, it feels unique when compared to almost any other platformer (well, there was a similar game that came out not too long ago). Still, even for someone like me that played platformers all my life, Rifter managed to make me feel like "a fish out of water". The gameplay feels great, it takes a lot of practice but I have no complaints. I would say that difficulty is slightly above average, there are plenty of checkpoints and the levels are not too long. I should make a note of the soundtrack, it fits the game very well and it tends to speed up or slow down depending on circumstances (ahh and the songs are very good).
Pros:
+ very good game settings, including things you would not expect
+ you can rebind controls (keyboard & controller)
+ unique and dynamic gameplay, feels great
+ stellar soundtrack used dynamically
+ basic skills tree and unlockable mobility tools
+ hidden gems and many challenges
+ overall a good aesthetic and polished experience
Cons:
- I don't think that planets are different enough
Overall Thoughts: 8/10
Perhaps the game is not for everyone, its focus on complex platforming and hard challenges might filter out a certain type of gamer. I am not a competitive person but I am enjoying the feel of the game, it feels different when compared to your traditional platformer. You might have to play around with controls until you find a sweet spot. Overall, a solid game in almost every aspect, the variety in environments feels somewhat lacking though.

The game used to be great, but there is a graphical bug in it that appeared some time ago, it has been reported and the developer does nothing about it.
The game is unplayable as is...
I am on a flavor of Ubuntu and as long as the dev does not respond to those kind of issues, I can't recommend the game.

A splendid 2D game, with high speed, accuracy, and tight controls that i would like to group with others in its class like Celeste and Hollow Knight.
This one is almost all about swinging, which is something i always like in a game. It starts off in a nice easy way allowing you to grasp the basics quickly, and progressively it will get harder while also putting in new mechanics for you to learn and master.
All the while you are swinging around you will find and earn shards which are used to upgrade your abilities and unlock new ones, and with these upgrades you can keep progressing into new levels, or go back and earn shards you could not get before.
Rifter was for me, throughout, a fresh experience. It kept hitting with new things each level, and i loved going back to find shards, but especially to beat challenges and break time records. (It also has a ghost feature so you can see others runs and do yours at the same time.)

One of the very best in the field of fast-paced precision platformers. Smooth and super-fast movement that massively rewards skill, a relatively forgiving base level of difficulty with harder optional challenges sprinkled all over, great variety in level design (there are awesome boss fights too!), in-game competitive leaderboards for speedrunners and a striking, polished audiovisual style to tie it all together - can't go wrong with those ingredients. The developer is a cool guy too.

I just bought it, played the first planet and it's awesome. Love the 80s soundtrack. The game gives you the feeling that you are doing something awesome. It makes fun and gives you anger, but good anger that let's you enjoy your success even more. Feelings I remember from playing Super Meat Boy.

I'm always on the lookout for challenging and fast paced platformers, so when I saw the trailer for Rifter about a month ago I instantly fell in love. It looked like everything I want from a game, and more. Now that I've played it, I can tell you... It's even better than I thought.
It starts off quite easy for the first few levels, but the difficulty ramps up quick to place that is appropriate for a game of this type - it is a difficult game, but as any good difficult game it is never unfair. You get better quickly, and breezing through parts of a level that you just a few minutes ago were completely stuck on is amazingly satisfactory.
The level design is excellent. It could easily have become a bit tideous to just be running one direction all the time, but the game mixes it up with fights that take place in enclosed spaces, in a more arena-like setting where you get a chance to learn the layout of the map, rather than just blazing past it.
I'm not going to comment much on the graphics and the audio, you can see for yourself that they are amazing. However, I think that some more variation in these areas would not harm the game. I think that adding a few extra songs would go a long way, though as I'm writing this I'm not done with the game, so maybe some more songs will unlock as I progress?
I love Super Meat Boy, and ever since I played it I've been on the lookout for something that scratches the same itch. This game is not only better than Super Meat Boy, it is the best 2D platformer that I've ever played. It's just that good.

Super fun fast-paced grappling hook platformer with smooth acrobatic movement, fantastic level and enemy design, and satisfying dash-into-enemies combat that will make you wonder why other grappling hook games don't do combat this way. The controls make it very easy to pick up, especially considering it's a grappling hook game, but it's still ridiculously hard to master; I'd argue that some of the optional end-game challenge levels are even harder than the equivalent levels in Celeste.
It has a ton of levels, hidden collectibles and optional challenges, e.g. "finish this stage without touching the ground" or "finish this stage without using the grappling hook more than X times", like the similar "only use X portals" challenges in Portal. I bought this after randomly seeing it in my Steam discovery queue and ended up getting waaaay more polish and content than I expected, along with super tight momentum-based controls. Highly recommended!

Really fun from what I briefly played, but I then discovered that the leaderboard server is offline with no plans to bring it back online, so I refunded as I was specifically looking for a leaderboard competition game. Still a great game for anyone who doesn't care about the lack of working leaderboards

Overall fun game. Some levels could do with some slight changes to make it easier though, especially when it comes to the time attack challenges, some of which require insane levels of precision to beat. But if you like fast paced 80's themed precision platformers it's definitely worth it.

Yeah I dont recommend this game, tried my very best to see the good of this game but the controls throw me off during the boss fight that I quit mid fight.
Pros:
Story is decent.
Upgrades are fair, you can even change difficulty to make it easier to obtain those upgrades.
Challenging obstacles.
Fast Paced, along with some pretty good bosses.
Cons:
It can be clunky at times, whenever I try to air dash it goes for grapple instead. Thats been frustrating me for a long time that I decide to quit. Ruins the challenge and the momentum whenever I try to pull something and it does something I didnt want to do. While its just one bad thing, its a MAJOR problem because it can apply every gameplay. I've been tolerating it for awhile believing theres some other way, but no it has to constantly be a problem so I quit.
I wouldnt recommend this game, unfortunately.

Amazing game. Although it's not really big, there is a lot of things you can do with all the challenges, and it's really fun trying to finish the levels as fast as you can. This game can bring you a lot of hours of fun. Definitively recomended, it's a great experience. It's an amazing game.

Absolutely tons of fun! The controls and gameplay are super tight, and the speed is just right! The interface is great and the levels variation and mechanics are fantastic! It's quick to pick up (but takes skill to master) and the level length is perfect even if you only have a few minutes to play here and there! I would definitely recommend if this type of game appeals to you at all!

This is my first review for a game but i have to say i love this game. Sure the 80's aesthetic is nothing nobody has ever seen, but it feels so refreshing in this games case. I first saw gameplay the day BEFORE this game came out and I was instantly hooked. Steam is filled to the brim with horrible games with zero control over what goes on it and this game is an example of what to do RIGHT. It allows for fast and continuous platforming mixed with grapling and zipping action while also being explorative enough to let you stop what your doing. Infact the game ENOCOURAGES YOU from the start to do so and you will always be rewarded. Mix that in with a sidekick that isnt annoying, a progression system similar to something like ori and the blind forest and some banging beats and you have a hell of a game that is totally worth the $10 price.

Rifter is a very fluent and fast paced rope platformer.
Speed runs and collectibles as well as challenges for the levels take
it all to a new difficulty.
I like the sound optics and overall look and feel. Its cool to play and
hard to master ;) watching speedruns of other people makes it look
super easy! But try yourself. Worth playing for sure!
Either for a nice experience inbetween or the hardcore challenge through and through!

This game is amazing. You should buy it.
There are certain games that are just special. This is one of them. I put it up there with Nex Machina as an impeccable arcade experience that will have you throwing your control in frustration and then rushing to the store to buy another.
It's will feel wierd at first, but once you "get it", the experience is invigorating. The speed, the precision, the challenge.
You've probably noticed the amazing aesthetic + music, which provides a lovely backdrop for your hours of playing the same level over and over trying to shave off seconds or complete one of the games devious challenges. Good stuff, but the real meat here is the gameplay.
Despite the depth of it's mechanics, the game does a wonderful job of tutorializing and slowly feeding them to you.
So, there are the mainline levels. They have checkpoints, you have health. You will be swinging and dashing your way through them, and you can take your time. The difficulty curve is pretty smooth as well, so as soon as your thumbs are getting sore a new toy will be introduced that you will want to play with.
Each zone has a few of these levels, and once you've gone through them, you unlock the "boss" level which usually has some unique challenges and set-pieces. Eventually, you will also get a few bonus levels: there are "puzzle" style levels that I really love (but they might drive you insane), and then later some "speed" levels are introduced which require you to hit a series of checkpoints in a very tight time window. There are 4 zones per planet, and I'm on the third and last planet. The game says I am 62% finished.
So, that's great, right? Well, you can also replay every single one of these levels to collect hidden "shards" and tackle challenges with "shard" rewards (and there are some special ones that are real head-scratchers). You can also go for score or time and see how you stack up on the leaderboards. There is full ghost support so you can have real-time feedback on your run, and you can watch any of the runs on the leaderboard to learn from the best.
If any of this sounds interesting, try it out. I highly recommend a controller and the twin-stick control scheme for the independent aim it provides. You can also play with m+kb, just keyboard, or use a more standard platformer scheme as well. The controls are all fully rebindable as well.
Oh, there is story too. There are some interesting characters (you're just a mute Rifter) and I actually loled at some of the writing. The lore and some of the big story beats are hidden behind "story shards" that you need to collect so you can get access to some of the more esoteric bits. That means, if you want the full story, you're going to have to git gud. Personally, I think it's great and I look forward to hunting down every last bit.
EDIT:
So after 40+ hours I've nearly 100% the game. I've collected every last shard, I've beaten every single level, and completed nearly every challenge. There is one "Take no damage" challenge I have left to conquer in a level called Cramped that has three waves of enemies. Eventually, I will get lucky and do it ^_^.
Just a note, others have done all that in far less time. So, completion time will depend on your skill.
Besides that, I've gotten into the leaderboards a bit and even took a couple #1 spots (that were very quickly taken from me ^_^).
Luckily, there are 4 save slots, so I will probably have a go at speedrunning through the entire game, or just playing it through again for fun. This just doesn't feel like a game I'm going to put down after it's "done".

Does what it says on the tin.
Rifter is certainly interesting. This is a rather unique and really solid precision platformer with tight controls and satisfying gameplay. You'll swing and dash your way through enemies and levels while jamming to a solid set of tracks. It is tough, but in a way that is uber satisfying when you get that smooth run down. Combat is extremely satisfying and can be made as fancy or simple as you choose.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the characters. Tiny, your companion, and Zip, the challenge giver, are awesome. They really bring the smiles amidst some of your frustration. This is a speedrunning platformer, so story/characters may not be that important, but to me, those two really give a lot of personality to this title.
If the trailers look interesting to you, I'd recommend giving it a try for yourself. What videos cannot portray is the actual *feeling* of swinging through the levels and arena combat areas, and how good it feels to get a smooth pass on a level you've been having trouble with.
Highly recommend.

Recommended to me by one of my Twitch Viewers. I'm so glad they convinced me. It has an incredible movement system and a simple and strong aesthetic. The soundtrack is a perfect match to the visuals of the game as well. I've ran into a few parts that were difficult to pass, but the satisfaction of smoothly beating the level makes it worth it. Please give it a try.

First of all, the look and feel is excellent - you can gather that yourself from the videos and screenshots. Great use of colour, music and sound effects.
Gameplay-wise the mechanics are a LOT of fun. At first I was pretty intimidated by the precision required to shoot from point to point at such high speed, but somehow I just seemed to pick it up as I went along. The camera movement and slow-mo effects add to the thrilling feeling of speed and fluidity which makes it such a pleasure to play.
So far I got to the first really mean point which I couldn't get past. It's hard, but just on the right side of "seems doable with just oooooone more go" to keep me trying.

This game is an 80's synthwave platformer in a vein most similar to the aerial sections of Ori and the Blind Forest. The movement is very polished. I played with classic controls on a controller. Having a blast. Absolutely recommend this game to anyone looking for a difficult fast paced platformer with interesting mechanics, or any variation there in of.

Obligatory 'Steam, please add sideways thumb option'
Seems to be more like a grappling hook based action game than a platformer, and didn't love the way it felt to move around. Feels a bit loosey goosey to me and often had issues with the hook auto-snapping to the wrong target.
First boss was an underwhelming chore with the frustrating habit of walking off the map lol
I love Zip tho

This game is good, really really good.
But seriously what have you smoked during leveldesing, i even got softlocked once during a bossfight and the puzzles have too less room to compensate ''mirco''mistakes, you probaly dont even have about 1/10 of a secound time sometimes. I even only watched lets plays so I was able to figure out how this game ends.
Seriously this isnt challanging anymore this is frustrating. Would only recomend when youre a hardcore jump n run player

It took a bit for me to get used to the controls, but once I did, the game was pretty much as-advertised. You really do get to fly, swing, and dash around like a total boss.
I'm some fraction through the campaign and I just tried some challenge runs, I'm having a blast.
The soundtrack and the aesthetics are also great too. There is no region-specific music, but there's a good amount of tracks and I haven't gotten bored of them just yet. The music in the trailers is included. :)
I'm playing on Linux Mint with a mouse and keyboard. Nice difficulty curve so far for the main campaign. Lots of replayability with different modes of play; you can go back to previous planets and collect lots of goodies.
Overall, if you're into this aesthetic and like a more physics-y, innovative platformer, definitely check this out.

Rifter is a phenomenal blend of breakneck speed, vibrant visual and musical style, and challenging yet very fun and accessible gameplay. If you enjoy 80's-style synthwave, neon/retro aesthetics, and acrobatic grappling hook shenanigans, you should really pick this one up. It's well worth the 12 bucks.
The only criticism I have is there's no option to shuffle the playlist, which is a very minor complaint.

The place where this game stands out from others is the sensation of speed.
The grappling hook mechanics are fluid clockwork. The game begs you to replay levels and go faster and faster.
It's an absolute joy to move around, there's a beautiful feeling of freedom and control even within the tight level design.
Contender for "best movement of any 2d platformer" in my eyes. An absolute joy.

(I may have only completed the first world, but i think it's already enough to get a good feel overall)
first of, the retrowave / synthwave vibe is absolute and pretty awesome - in fact i want the OST, and took some screenshots for background
secondly, it is as fluid as seen on the trailer, yet not as hard to get the flow as it seems, which was something i was afraid of when i bought it
third, i didnt expect it to have some kind of story and neat dialogue (plus emotes lal) so that was a nice add
there's also extra stuff like challenges for each level, and could use some Steam Workshop for custom levels
HINT: using mouse to aim is easier, so you might wanna go for that unless you prefer controller and dont mind the extra challenge

All in all it's a great game but for a while now ever since I applied windowed mode the screen has been black, music still plays and I can still interact with things but my screen is always black. I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, the "verify game files" or whatever the option is called but nothing works and it's really annoying. 10/10 game but as some glitches and bugs that need to be sorted out. quick.

UPDATE: I 100%ed this game, and cannot recommend it enough. 12 hours of pure high octane fun, plus some interesting story elements. It took me about 6 months to come back to this, but it was worth it
This game is mind-bogglingly good.
Pros:
- Difficult but rewarding platforming
- Combat is incredibly clean and good feeling
- Optional levels test your skills
- Cheap
- Great for speedrunning
- Awesome OST
Cons:
- I wish that there were more songs in the OST
- Not a super long game, took me about 6 hours to go an any% route. There's some extra spoilery content I'll be going for next though... ;)
If you liked games like N++, Super Meat boy, and other hardcore platformers, this game is for you, and you will love it. If not, why not give it a try for an hour or two? You can always refund it if you want.

Rifter is a remarkable speciment of its genre. After getting a hang of its game mechanics you will enter a oddly satisfying drive to beat level after level. IMakeGames does a great job at introducing new techniques with a very moderate progression in the difficulty. But do not get me wrong, the end game and some of the bosses will be still brutal! I definitely can recommend trying all the various challenges, that are both tough and enjoyable. The ability to see others solving the challenges was super helpful - props for the developer on that feature!
The presentation was pleasing and the soundtrack is very pushing and suits to the game's pacing, albeit I would wish for more tracks. All in all it's a very solid game and definitely can recommend for like-minded platformer fans!

I think Rifter is incredibly well made in every aspect, it's very enjoyable, and I can definitely recommend it.
Unfortunately, I find it too difficult, even in accessible mode. I started out having a lot of fun, but I'm increasingly getting frustrated even in accessible mode, so much so that I'll remove this game after writing this review. I'm at the first tower of the lava planet by the way. It's useful that the game is slower in accessible mode, but I could use more checkpoints. Sorry, but there's enough stress in my life and I feel that Rifter just adds to it around its end.

I really love this game. I used to play a lot of w2w shoppa in Worms, and this feels like the closest thing to Worms' ninja roping that I've played since, with plenty of other mechanics layered on top. That said it does still feel very unique.
The mechanics feel like they all mesh together really well, and have plenty of room to offer a really high skill ceiling, which makes going through a stage perfectly feel amazing.
Can't recommend enough if you're looking for something challenging and unique, and especially if you enjoy trying to beat your previous time, or other people's.

So, the best way I can give a comparison for Rifter is that it's like a combination of N or N+ and Speedrunners with the addition of a story worth investing in.
This game is fast-paced, and is the right level of challenging with an optimized difficulty curve for most people to be able to jump in and play. I never once felt like I was given an insurmountable challenge, and I never felt like the game was too easy either.
Let's talk about the mechanics:
First, there's the controls. It's made very clear from stage one that the game is best experienced on a controller, using the twin-stick layout, and I have to agree whole-heartedly. While it was awkward at first as it was initially unconventional, after the third level it felt natural.
Second, there's the movement. The game manages to handle movement and physics so well that I got annoyed at other similar games for their lack of finesse. It feels like N and N+, where every error is not the game's fault, but just a mis-calculation on your part. You learn from it, then improve.
Third, and most importantly, is the ghost system that is unlocked as you progress in the game. It lets you compete against your best time, your local competition on the leaderboard, or (if you're feeling confident enough) the number one time on the leaderboard.
Now that the mechanics have been summarised, let's talk about the story.
The story seems simple at a first glance: You complete the levels, you destroy the tower, rinse and repeat until credits roll. The real story comes from what you find out during your campaign of collecting all the shinies to get all the upgrades, as well as some key points throughout the game. You learn the mysteries of why. Why do you exist? Why do you destroy the towers? Why should I continue? Why does Tiny like to use unicode emojis?
All this and more is answered as you make your way to 100% completion. Albeit sometimes you feel cheated, (All those shinies for 1 line? Really?) but overall you can't help but feel satisfaction that all your hard work is slowly lifting the veil.
So, the cons.
Honestly? There's not a lot since the dev is very active on the Discord server (access to which is given as soon as you unlock the ghosts) and has done a lot to make sure everything works well. I only have one issue currently, and even then it's just a nitpick:
I wish there was a way to disable checkpoints. There are a number of levels that have a challenge to not take any damage, so in the instances you do while attempting the challenge, you usually end up spamming the respawn button until you're sent back to the start.
So that's my review. I will be attempting to pressure my friends into buying it so that they too can experience the fun I've had while playing this game.

Platformers aren't usually my thing, but I love this game. The gameplay is super smooth, and the 80s aesthetic is perfect. Plus, the soundtrack is killer. I think that this is the perfect game for streaming, because it's fun to play and fun to watch.
It is a challenging game for sure, but I like how the game introduces different techniques and moves as you progress. And the addition of tech trees is well-done.
Pulling off an epic combo is very satisfying. Make a mistake tho, and you *will* be punished. And the fact that there's a speedrunning leaderboard for each level always makes me want to try just one. more. time. Addictive!
Highly recommend this game!

This game is actually so sick, and I'm baffled as to how nobody knows about it. This is the biggest hidden gem I have ever come across, ever (and I can tell it's hidden, cause the way I found out about it was a random steam game search). It's not even a sense of "well the development team is small so I guess I can cut the game some slack", this game genuinely competes for one of the best platformers. It isn't THE best, but good god does it compete. Of course can't recommend it to everyone since it is still a challenging game, but it isn't an unfair challenge... Except for that one level near the end of the game where to 100% the level you need to beat it without getting hit and it's a shitload of enemies in a tight space, yea, that one. That is unironically the ONLY instance that I can think of in the ENTIRE game where the challenge is a bit unfair, but it won't even matter if you're not going for 100% so problem solved! Seriously one of the best platformers I have played, 8/10.

This is some good stuff here, the controls take some getting used to ( I recommend controllers )
once you do, it al falls into place.
visuals are perfection, ( from what I'm told the music is good as well )
you have a task of jiust getting through levels to reach the rift, and then you are given a tower to destroy in a different type of level. The mechanics get more intense as you progress, and then there's TONS of hidden things, secret routes to complete a level , leaderboard support, collectibles that earn you upgrades ( which make speedrunning even better )
and an overall charming and interesting story.
The NPCS shine here, I actually cared about what they said. The writing is very well done.
Please buy this game, the dev is self-published, and he deserves a ton of love for just how well made this game is.

I remember playing this game back when it was still in very early development, and still called something like "Unnamed N++ Style Game With Grappling Hook Prototype". I absolutely loved it then, and now that it's out in full, I love it even more. It's frustrating to fail, but that makes it so much more satisfying when everything flows perfectly and smoothly, and it's one of the best feelings in the world. Developer guy, I hope you know you did an absolutely fantastic job on this one. I've only finished two sections at this point, but they've been exhilarating and amazing and I can't wait to see the rest of the game.

A very fun and rewarding game. The sense of speed and freedom when flying through the air is great. I really enjoy the 80's themed music too :)

tldr: great game that feels great to play once you get a feel for it
It is truly a shame how little attention this game gets (except for the fact that it's quite easy to get top 10 if you try for it). It's really a great game. The controls are really tight and the levels are diverse and quick paced. It's hard, but you can always tell what to do. The story, while simple, fits very well. It can be a bit hard to get into the zone in the beginning (especially with the swinging), but as you get better you can really start to feel the flow. The soudtrack is also pretty great, although a bit repetitive since there are few songs.

Shockingly good. A phenomenal and gratifying game to play. Phew. It's almost exhausting. I need a drink. Now back to the game. Buy it. Seriously. Buy it.

This is a really fun runner game, you have to complete relatively difficult tasks but it is also not too challenging.
I would highly recommend this game!

I bought this on a whim when I saw a curator I knew recommended it. it's a fast past platforming game that's obviously geared towards the speedrunning crowd (if it isn't evedent that this was ment for twitch-fags and speedrunning virgins, check the audio settings, you will see "play all" and "play songs that will not get you demonitised on youtube, I find that laughable but whatever...) It is also very evident that this game was made by a redditor or 2 (see the cringeworthy dialouge and the dead ascii emotes the characters use)
but whatever, reddit hatred aside, how's the gameplay? well if you like skill based, fast paced platformers to the tune of v-vaporwave? t-techno? I honestly don't know what genre this music is in... You'll probably enjoy this game. seems this game has enough levels to keep you preoccupied with it. like I said I bought this game on a whim and this indie 2D platforming game isn't very much different from other indie 2D platforming games so there's that.
overall, if you like this type of game, I'd buy it or get it by other means but if you don't like shitty reddit humour and stupid fucking ascii emotes, I don't recomend it.
