Put this one back in the oven boys, it ain't done yet. The core concept is appealing, and the moment-to-moment gunplay feels OK, but everything from UI to the primary gameplay loop feels half-baked in the game's current state. This isn't the Hunt roguelike I was hoping for, but one day it might be. Refunding for now, will revisit the game down the line if it gets some refinement.
Gripes for the devs:
The world/story appealed to me, but everything from the tutorial text to the lore entries in the journal was spotted with spelling and grammar errors. I saw 'hunters' spelled "hunters", "hunter's", and "Hunter's" in three different places in the first few minutes. I love lore, but find it hard to enjoy when the language is off.
There are no graphics options, and my framerate tanked in certain spots, usually when fog was around. My CPU/GPU weren't working too hard at the time, so this is probably just something that will be optimised in future, but having no options to change graphics settings to mitigate this was a bit of a slap in the face. How can there be no options at all? Even to change resolution?
On first play, the primary gameplay loop appears to be try, die, repeat, but there is almost no progress made between hunters. The optimal play style I discovered involved entering the hunt, shooting some critters, then using the 'Main Menu' button to return yourself to the town, silver in hand, to upgrade gear and increase the chances of keeping your current hunter alive. (I was quite surprised when I clicked 'Main Menu' while looking for the aforementioned graphics options, and discovered this improvised town portal system.) The gameplay says "push forward to the boss!" then punishes you if you attempt this with basic equipment. I like the idea of doing some little hunts prior to taking on the big bad, but the way this executed (at least in the part of the game I played) was pretty unintuitive.
I'll keep the dream alive and monitor the game for updates, as I think there's something worthwhile at the heart of this project. But for now, I'm stepping out. Cheers team.

A really cool rogue-like in the ever present Weird West genre, Falsepine is a little rough aroudn the edges in terms of polish or outright visual design, BUT its really fun and engaging gameplay and minute to minute fast paced combat makes up for any shortcomings and continually left me with a "Onnnneeee more run!" feeling after dying. My only sole complaint right now is that Bosses are a bit sponge-y and you can leave to town from quests to upgrade yourself but this was never stated in game as far as I could tell. Otherwise, fantastic little roguelike that I can't wait to play more of!

Hit escape after killing all the beasts in a level to go back to town. Took a while to figure this out. The store inventory is random, so if what you need is not in there just reload the town until it is. Have enjoyed time spent playing this game. Good value for money.

I did not enjoy this and I love Roguelikes.
maybe wait a little while to see if the dev's improve the game.
But as of now give it a miss.
If you do want to but the game the 1 BIG TIP that I can give you is that you don't need to go straight for the boss.
Rack up some money through the stage and before you go to the boss (who you can beat with starting gear but I wouldn't recommend it) hit the main menu and go back to your town to buy/upgrade your gear.
Rinse and repeat till you've got a few of the basic weapons.

A very challenging game!! I've only played it for a couple of hours, but so far it has been a challenge that has been very fun learning. The enemies movements are fun to dodge and interact with, and the various weapons available give much different flavours to the encounters you'll be in (I love the shotgun, feels so crunchy). It has a good balance of frustration and reward for beating what you couldn't in the past which I really appreciate. And the visuals??? Stunning. The world feels so alive. That main menu screen at the town is incredible!!
Theres some bugs that have occured, got blackscreened once, but luckily the game seems to autosave, so nothing was lost. And some navigation of the enemies getting out of the level zone, but if you move away from them they so far have always returned to the middle where I can get them >:D
The only active gameplay thing I would change are that the blue Brightmoles AoE poison doesnt go away when they die, and if you back yourself into a corner like I have done so many times, it means you have to hurt yourself getting out. A small thing that would be nice to see fixed in a later patch ^u^
Overall a really fun experience!

Overall an enjoyable game. The art in the game is fantastic. The game play can be hard but that is the kind of game I like. If you are slow on the draw you will be restarting a lot. But as you play more you get better quickly. Would highly recommend.

A fun action rougelike that can be quite challenging. Plays more like a roguelike souls game despite looking like an action rpg. Definitely suited to those who enjoy the grind of the die and retry loop. Atmosphere is engaging and the visuals are great.

Great Game and awesome dev team! enjoyed playing it at an event and now at home! guns feel really good with fun feedback and challenging balance between shooting, melee and reloading which makes every encounter feel like a puzzle and provides great replay-ability. knowledge and gamplay dexterity is something I feel! for each run is quicker as i get better at the game! progression at fist is hard but as you play you learn the ways of a seasoned hunter!! solid Rouge-like progression! Still trying to beat it I imagine many more hours of fun + I look forward to teased new content devs mentions in the community post!

Bugged mess of a game, the developer abandoned it because they just can't be bothered to fix it (first game -> saw that making a good game exceeds their skill level -> probably went on to engage in agriculture or some other menial job for a living and abandoned their game dev dreams). Avoid like plague, both Falsepine and this developer.

Sets you up with terrible tile layouts with too many enemies that have large AOE attacks with no restraint as to when each one will attack. Spawns you into maps with enemies already aggro'd and running at you by the time you can actually see anything.

I would like to keep more things after I die. I just cannot enjoy it if I lose everything every time I die. I am supposed to die a lot in Rogue-like, but it is very disheartening when I don't get to keep anything.
I have upgraded the bank to level 10 and it barely makes a difference. I still lose all my inventory except for the tutorial items. I can store items in the bank but if I store them, I can't use them in the mission, so what's the point? Losing lore shouldn't even happen as it's only 5% damage increase against specific enemies.
Since I'm so weak every time I spawn anew, I have to play extremely careful, Even if I have cleared the first stage before, I never feel powerful (because I don't get to keep anything). The first stage boss is a bullet sponge. The attack pattern is fine. Attacks are well telegraphed and phases are distinct. But the fact that it has so much health makes it a bit of a gamble at times to win without losing concentration. The stage is hard even when I figure out how to deal with enemies. The stats is just not good enough after I die. The best strategy is to grind upgrades and money so that I can take the boss down cleanly. So, each time I die, I have to do a few more runs in the first level (with coming back to town 1 room before the 1st boss every time) to upgrade yourself to have a chance of making a clean run and win against the 1st boss. This just pads more time and slows the game right down. When I do this enough, the loading screen becomes annoying.
Even when I know the pattern of the boss and all the rooms of the 1st stage really well since I have replayed it too much, the lack of stats of the 1st run from spawning, I am required to pretty much always grind first before doing an 'actual run' to go against the boss. I came from playing Hades just before this game, and it had the perfect balance of dying and re-spawning, keeping a lot of things for the next runs. Each run is supposed to get easier and everybody should 'eventually' be able to beat the game with enough runs. Sadly, this game still has too much problems for me to enjoy right now, but this is my honest review and hopefully, it will be improved in the future.

The graphics and theme are cool. It can be nice to control, and I love the clacky shotgun reload effects.
But the gameplay loop and penalities when you die kind of ruin the fun.
When you die, you lose almost everything; your primary and secondary weapon, all additional equipment (medkits, dynamite), potentially all your money, and any bonus perks earned in the levels. The only thing you get to keep is anything you stored in the bank.
So the gameplay loop involves getting killed then grinding and grinding the same areas again and again in order to recover those bonus perks, and get the money in order to re-equip. The game requires you to play very cautiously or it'll punish you badly for it.
The levels consist of a number of small areas played in a linear fashion. After clearing each individual area fully of enemies, you can choose to quit back to town to restock (which you should do if you're not certain you can survive the next area). If you quit back to town, when you retry you have to start back at the beginning of the first area of that level, so you lose progress, but get to keep money and perks you've earned. (Btw, the trick others reviews have mentioned about quitting back to town from the menu doesn't work unless all enemies are dead, so it doesn't help. Alt + F4 works though :) )
The placement and types of enemies is random, and the game can sometimes start you in a new area backing into a corner against multiple high levels enemies, so you're only hope is to spam medikits and hope you survive long enough to quit back to town.
To me if feels like the difficultly and grindiness was a substitute for a more substantial game. Would have been an amazing if the world/levels were setup more like a Diablo game.

Looks great but was not happy with the linear closed in small maps. Was hoping for an ARPG like Diablo or Torchlight. Not really liking it.

Excellent first game from Voyager Softworks! The game looks beautiful and has a fun gameplay loop. Plenty of content to dig through at an excellent price as well, definitely worth your time to pick it up!

Not bad gameplay, bare bone with huge flaws.
Atmosphere, musics, shootings are all good. The twin sticks gameplay works smoothly.
The visuals are enjoyable.
What lacks this game is development and contents. And worst of all, a good progress saving...
You start in a region, with 3 missions + one boss. If you die, missions can vary. But not that much.
Kill X nbr of monsters with a melee weapons. Kill them by explosion. Kill them with a colt... Don't get any damage... You get it.
The map is divided into half a dozen of sections. The sections order may vary a little between different attempts after dying. But not that much... Sections are extremely linear. A succession of corridors where your movements are quickly limited.
Your movements are run, reload, shoot, melee, throw things like dynamite and dodge. You can also jump certain obstacles but it is not too much helping or changing your gameplay.
The monsters you get in a map are the same. 2 or 3 species + a boss at the end that may be helped by the species met earlier in the same map.
The money you can get from some places in some sections never change. They are difficult to see but once you get where they are, you are ready to grind. Any time you pass there, get the loot.
Same for some places you can investigate. Not visible directly on the screen. You pass there and you get the information press Key to investigate. It will reward you with some weapons that you can later use if you leave the map alive.
Not difficult this, you can leave a map any times to come back to town from the menu.
A bit awkward since there is also a place in each section for you to decide if you continue the map or come back to town. But anyway.
So you grind, learn the sections, save money at the bank for your heritage, your potentially new life. Rinse and repeat till you are able to kill the boss and pass to another map.
In town, you can place 2 guns at the bank (a bit more it seems based on what you store?) + money automatically. It is your savings for your future games. I can only recommend to quickly upgrade the bank to its max. Since you will have to grind, optimize and make it less painful quickly. You will get an achievement for that.
Then you can buy guns, ammos, and other kind of gears.
You can go to the saloon to buy toxic beverages that will help your next game. Or not. They all comes with negative effects.
So, you probably get what is missing till now. More sections, not just the amount required to build a map, more monsters, more randomness could have definitely been a plus. More choice in the way you can leave a section for another. Bringing a little more of exploration even if, you repeat something.
The town could have bring more strategy as well in its mechanics. You may acquire talismans in game but they cannot be a part of the heritage. The character that will benefit the heritage will just get money and no traits. Potentially 2 guns. There is no character customization at all that will last.
All that is sad because with more love, more development and not necessarily unreachable ones, this game could have been a gem. It should be an Early Access in fact. Not on the buggy part, I did not face one in close to 2h of game but really on the mechanics parts and the general smoothness. To add more.
To finish the navigation in the menus as well. Playing with a controller to navigate like a mouse is lazy, unfinished, barely acceptable.
Texts of missions are barely legible.
There is no graphical option so, no vsync and it lacks for me really.
You need to skip the tutorial every times you start with a new life... come on...
Verdict is a thumb down as you already mentioned but for the sole last line of this review. The flaw that broke everything to the bones.
One issue is the disappointment of what could have been a really great game but is not. Devs you messed up an opportunity here for what seems being lazy reasons...
Still, it was not broken for me. I would have kept the thumb up for this unfinished game but you had to do this:
The worst stupid and uninteresting non-feature that could have been done to totally ruins the game.
The ultimate monkey rinse and repeat option to better enjoy all the flaws mentioned before.
Moving from laziness to absolute incompetency.
No progress save for killing one boss. The money remains in the bank and the biggest creature in the region reborn... You die in a later region, you have no choice other than to come back to the first region, kill the first boss again to be able to progress... Lame.

Very fun but challenging game, takes a little while to learn how to properly deal with enemies and their attack patterns but once you do it's pretty rewarding. The game can become a little repetitive where most levels seem the same every time, adding a bit of randomization would go a long way. Just randomizing the enemy, silver, ammo or barrel locations as well as having random boulders, logs or obstacles toggling each time would break that feeling of repetition. I'm also surprised there aren't any high-cost guns or equipment that the player can strive towards achieving, once you've got a 100 coin primary that's about it. Also, a clearer reload would be nice instead of having to look down at the bottom corner to see if it's reloaded properly. Another issue I had was regarding the fact that you're allowed to return back to camp which I only learned about after dozens of death which would've helped me beat the first boss quicker, which is quite ruthless too.
Overall an enjoyable game with a lot of potential for growth but does require a lot of patience to get skilled at

This is a challenging game, if you are into a souls-like western monster-hunting experience then Falsepine is for you.
Plenty of content for the price with some really unique and awesome enemy design and world building elements.
