I am surprised this game hasnt been more popular. Maybe if it had English dubbing, it would have been?
TAPE is a horror walking sim with environmental puzzles.
We play as Iria, a teenager, who is transported into a surreal world of her memories after watching a video of her missing father, a former horror filmmaker, pleading for her help.
As we navigate this strange world we have become trapped in, we find a special camera that reveals hidden messages and allows us to rewind, pause, or fast-forward time on the objects it is aimed at. Progress in the game relies on looking through the camera to manipulate objects in the environment, revealing or creating pathways.
TAPE reminded me of the walking sim ZED, with its surreal settings and a story that gradually unfolds through the videos and documents we find.
The game offers two gameplay modes: a normal mode with areas that require stealth, and a narrative mode where all the hide-from-the-monster sequences were removed, allowing us to focus on the story and puzzles.
The game has a single autosave and only saves when specific progress is made. A movie reel appears at the bottom right of the screen while the game is saving. Once a save is complete, it is the ideal time to quit to avoid replaying a section.
The game has 4 endings, but there is no need to replay the entire game to see them. All endings can be unlocked by replaying the short director's cut mode that becomes available after completing the game once.
Overall, I really enjoyed my time with TAPE: Unveil the Memories. If you like atmospheric, story-driven horror and dont mind the Spanish-only dubbing, you should definitely give it a try.
