Train Simulator: Duchess of Sutherland Loco Add-On

My favorite locomotive so far. Sadly when I origionally ran her with coaches she wouldn't move. The problem seemed to be with the tender blocking the vaccum pressure and the whole train would therefore not move. I therefore sought help and discovered a community patch on UKTrainSim. This fixed the problem and she's now my most powerful locomotive (rightly so, she is a Princess Coronation.) The detail and sounds by far make up for the original Error. I'd certainly reccomend you get this locomotive, but definately install the community patch or it won't run properly. Take care S.

I'll put it like this. It's a good looking locomotive. If you're a steam freak like me you will love it. However, if you're a bit more hardcore and like simulating when the Duchess of Sutherland would have been working under a BR name then you are unfortunately not going to be able to pull freight, unless you get a community patch which will allow you to do so. Also without the patch you are going to find the pressure drops dramatically low and is impossible to get back. Without the patch the Duchess of Sutherland is almost a waste.

It sounds and looks decent, and is very fun to drive. The scenarios are also fairly easy to complete, so it is easy to get all the achievements for this one (If you care about that sort of thing).

This loco looks ok but is BADLY underpowerd. As a training cleaner on the Epping Ongar Railway, I know that The Duchess can pull 9 coaches up a 1:120 gradient with a roaring fire at about 50-70 mph. Not 29 mph as train sim shows. The boiler loses pressure far too quick for my liking.

Looks hold up, feels nice to drive, and keeping up the PSI gives you a good challenge. A TS pro version of this would be superb.

I have had this loco on my computer for some time and I drive lots of varied loco's in advance mode, but this loco will not steam and I have tried all the ways I can think of and cannot get it to maintain steam pressure. They always said these were some of the most powerful loco's in Britain but this programme doesn't prove it. At present I would not recommend you purchase it. Perhaps they should update the prog. or explain why I cannot get any performance out of the loco.

I rarely write reviews unless its a very good or a very bad DLC. That said, this is an absolutely fantastic DLC. Easy to operate, sharp contrasting gauges, good sounds. So much, that I can play it without a HUD. Add Track IR so you can glance out the window and glance at your gauges and you have such a rich and enjoyable experience. If you want to get into steam locomotives, I highly recommend this one.

Yes, there's a steam problem with this engine, so you really need to make sure the coal and the water are on the certain level to get her up on speed. So, since I'm not that good with this engine, i changed the setting to auto fireman :D, and the duchess can run up to 88+ mph in the flat terrain with 13 coaches. At least i dont get slow big express engine And i have to say that this engine is so beautiful, the sound is great, the whistle sometimes acting weird but still sounds good. I really hope that you guys make the red livery reskin for this engine. p.s: english is not my first language, sorry

First of all. I like this steam locomotive and I am very fond of the real 8P class locomotives. The model is nicely made with a cool looking cabview as well as acceptable sounds and the locomotive does come with some Mk1 coaches. But that is where the good bits about this DLC add-on comes to an end unfortunately. The killer for this add-on is the physics because the locomotive loses far too much steam to be able to reach its designated line speed of 90mph. The max speed I could squeeze out of this locomotive is about 40-45mph on level ground and don't even bother trying to run this locomotive uphill because it will stall out. Its a shame really because this pack has good potential if this issue with the badly configured physics is fixed. Overall Rating: 4/10.

The train looked good when i saw of sale so i bougth it and was very impressed on the sounds it made such as the whistle the only thing i do not like is that the trains brakes are rubbish and when you put the amount of coaches on that the train comes with she can not move

Well, I'm not that good driver as you can find in the community, but I can share my feeling about the locomotive. It is very powerful, feels in driving like a high-speed locomotive as it must be. The DLC itself consists of two scenarios: the first one is relatively simple, you definetily can't unleash all the power of the locomotive, but the second one is challenging - it isn't easy to keep the pressure constant or decreasing not that fast and at the same time arrive in time. As for me these scenarios are good to start from and to understand what this locomotive can. I didn't tested yet it in full advanced mode - without HUD, using more controls in the cab, than I usually use, it is little bit complicated for me and usually I enjoy watching (and hearing) the steam locomotives from the outside, observing the smoke, the steams, the carriage and hearing the sound of steam exhaust from the steam machines. One thing I noticed while testing - you can't see the line signals from the cab, so in order to see them you have to use the drivers of firemans camera. Also sometimes you can get the wheelslip at low speeds if accelerating too fast or the emergency applied when the AWS is not acknowledged (here it is too silent), keep all that in mind. Speaking about bugs or so - nothing was bad or malfunctioning so it is made good at all. Summarizing all above I can suggest it for everyone familiar with steam traction. It will be a very good addition to your collection.

The steam generation physics is seriously messed up - steam generation rate goes down when you open the regulator. Model looks good.

i love the detail but the whistle REALLY lets it down and plus when you switch from legacey driveing mode to advanced driving mode the cuffing sound just cuts out what i mean about the whistle is that its not on a loop its just 1 same sound.

As beautiful as she is and the extensive overhaul from the IHH original, she's very boring to drive and there aren't really any scenarios to keep you busy
