The game is sadly a giant buggy mess. It is a mix of Steam world heist(You sometime have 2 characters but with no leveling or customization possible for the extra)with a platformer.
The game is still a buggy mess after the 1.09 version
-Boss fight that you can't launch
- Some actions will lead to the main character disappearing. ex: get too much on one side of the map
- Boss glitch and freeze the game and you are good to restart it
-Boss Vanessa can act even if stuns
I just finished the game so here is the Positive:
-The voice acting is good.
-Artwork is Nice
- I did enjoy how all characters are different
-The differents skills are fun to use.
-I did enjoy the turn based gun fight like steam heist
The bad:
-Buggy mess of a game
-All guns feel the same except for the legendary one
-Dynamite are useless since they bounce everywhere and you have to hope for the ennemy to be dumb enough to not move
-The platform part is a chore. Animation are slow and the character is not responsive
-I finish it in 7 hours but I could have done it in way less time if I was not forced to restart so much with all the bugs. Probably 5 hours of gameplay
I can't recommend the game in the current state and for that price.

I still have not finished the game, but I love it.
It delivers what it promises:
- Interesting tactical combat that's quite challenging (for me)
- Amazing visuals
- Well-delivered story and pretty good voice acting
- I seriously feel like a cowboy bounty hunter. Not a mosquito yet, but it will come
Yes, there's bugs in this game (pun intended) and it's not polished at places, but the devs are working hard on it. I reported several bugs that were fixed in less than 12 hours and they are still releasing patches EVERY SINGLE DAY.
It's a gem that's getting shinier every day.

Just play Steamworld Heist.
Imagine bullet ricochets being a special ability instead of something you could do all the time, then half your battles are outdoors making the ability near useless.
Imagine starting every battle out of cover so your first action point is wasted moving a single tile.
You CANNOT FAST FORWARD the enemies' turns.
You're only guns are pistols.
You're only one character so turn order and covering team mates and other tactical decisions is never a concern.
Imagine this "spiced up" with painfully rudimentary platforming that's woefully animated and is constantly grinding to a halt to ledge-climb and crawl up ladders.
You can't just jump onto the ladders, you need to stand at the base, then ascend, unable to jump up rungs as you go.
These sections gets slowed down even further with box pushing puzzles that just scream PADDING.
On top of doing two genres badly it's also incredibly buggy. Health potions not going into inventory.
Camera going way OoB during a boss battle.
Enemies animations derping out as they reposition, enemies "dropping dead" but still having their eyes open and their breathing animations playing.
The HUD constantly flickering in and out during dialogue sequences.
Ending your turn while using your 2nd action point to reposition results in enemies firing at the space you just ran past instead of the space you're going to.
This game as a whole just drags and drags.

I have just finished the game and would like to share my opinion. The only reason I am giving thumbs up, is out of mercy and because this is a Slovak game and I am also a Slovak. Despite all the bugs I encountered in the game, I still enjoyed the game, though. If its development really took 5 years, then so many bugs are simply unforgivable, even if it is your debut game. All the time I felt, as if I was playing a beta version. Even after several patches (v1.04), serious bugs are present and I don't recommend to make a purchase in this state.
Pros:
- Nice graphic stylization
- Good western atmosphere
- Professional voice-over
Cons:
- Bugs, bugs, bugs
- Missing difficulties - fights are very easy and not well balanced
- Unpolished gameplay - it is details that make a big difference in the end - grabbing on ledges and ladders should run smoothly and automatically, sliding should work without stopping the character, aiming during fights should work in 360 degrees, otherwise enemies in sharp angles can't be targeted, etc.
- Missing settings screen
Newest bugs I found: Eldorado has capacity of 10 bullets, but when the fight starts, it only has 6. I died in the last fight before final boss and enemies got respawned, but did nothing - I could just walk by them and avoid the fight. Final boss - jumping on the far right crate from the right side is not possible, as the character gets stuck and I must restart from checkpoint. Cutscenes run at very low FPS and sound is cracking.

This game has such a great foundation, I just wish I could recommend it. I loved the premise and how I was drawn into the story right away. The characters are interesting and developed with thought and care. As a game, however, it lacks a solid identity. It is some sort of hybrid between a platformer and a turn based tactical shooter, but it doesn't do either in a masterful way. The movement isn't smooth and actions like sliding and jumping aren't precise like I would expect in a platformer. During combat, I was constantly getting frustrated with the interface. I finally gave up. I really wanted to give this game a chance, but I ended up returning it.
Pros
-Main character is voiced by Elias Toufexis. Awesome.
-Main character sucks the blood of his enemies... as a Mosquito. Freaking cool.
-The bullet mechanics and unique enemies are great.
-I really enjoyed the subtle humor in some of the dialog.
-The idea of reloading and using the pistol outside of combat is ingenious.
Cons
-Frustrating combat
Combat frustrations:
-Forcing the user to open a menu to select actions is quite cumbersome, especially when there is a timed animation associated. I was constantly having trouble selecting the action I wanted to perform. Other games like X-Com and Steamworld Heist have streamlined these options so they can be selected without thought. (Ever watched a pro select his equipment in csgo? wicked fast without even thinking about how to do it)
-Selecting where a character should move to is the biggest pain point for me that caused me to return the game. The action of moving the camera across the battlefield is bound to the same control as selecting the next direction in a movement path. This allows the camera to be looking somewhere other than where the character will move. Please break these into separate bindings. Why can't I use the d-pad to select directions? The movement selection was slow, and in some instances, I would experience a bug where I couldn't move because my character and the starting point of movement were in separate locations.
-This is a minor nit, but some of the games actions were not explained in a way that I grasped them until I had done them a couple times, like gaining health from dead enemies, gaining health from live enemies, how dynamite doesn't explode on the turn its thrown, how dynamite doesn't actually stop in the location indicated by the trace reticle, or how dynamite will do damage to anything in its radius including characters on the other side of cover. This could be a design choice, letting the player discover these things can be attractive to some players.
Platformer Frustrations:
-Objects in the world didn't always match their animated shape. Example: while running from the spider, I would hit webs even when the animation did not show my character touch them. The spikes in the ceiling do not damage you in some places even when the character overlaps the animation.
-The pace of the platforming makes it feel like a chore rather than something exciting that enhances the game. I didn't feel the pressure of nearly getting eaten because my character lightly jogged away from a walking spider.
I love the idea behind this game. If the combat could be transformed into a smooth experience with intuitive controls, I might pick this game up again.

A terrific looking and sounding game, with nice narrative that is (unfortunately) marred severely by bugs (and by this I don't mean "insects", which the characters in Blood Will Be Spilled are). I cannot fathom why the devs didn't try harder to fix the game and "tighten up the screws" so to speak, but it certainly shows potential for some future installments to improve upon already great (yet, again, bugged) formula of light platforming and neat turn-based combat. The visuals are 10/10, very nicely drawn and conceptualized. The world, albeit not much explained in-game, is just brimming with untapped potential (primarily due to this game being a work of just a handful of developers - guess they were trying to punch above their weight, and that this is why the game is a flawed gem).
Since the main programmer left the team (and rightly so, judging by how incompetent he coded the game), the devs are currently unable to move forward with a sequel, despite there being an after-credits cliffhanger that opens path for making one. I hereby put a positive review, in good faith that Doublequote Studio will make a sequel down the line, and make a great successor to this ambitious (yet flawed) first entry.

I bought this game right after the release and i really liked the visual style and voiceovers, but i noticed some technical issues (both minor and major). It seems that quite a few bugs were addressed and fixed in recent updates.
Pros:
+ You can meet all the usual suspects from spaghetti westerns
+ Visuals
+ Great voiceovers / voice acting
+ There are bugs (i like the idea of insect wild west, puns are all over the place :D)
Cons:
- There are still some minor technical issues (in my case they were not game-breakers)
- Still needs some polishing / balancing
As the guys from this game studio already mentioned somewhere in comments, this is their debut, the game was released a bit earlier than it should have been, but they are obviously (by the frequency of updates) working hard to make it right. Overall, now after few updates i can recommend this game for all the spaghetti lovers. Cheers!

This is still a buggy mess, and the platforming is awful. Got about halfway and now stuck on a checkpoint that won't load. Not sure I got $3 worth of it from the sale. There's promise here but no one has the tolerance for the need to reload constantly due to game breaking bugs and replay shitty platforming bits and pieces. The game would be much better if it stored multiple checkpoints and allowed an easier time rewinding.

Fun 7 hour experience with tactical combat and puzzles, Typical western cowboy story that manages to be unique and uses the bug aesthetic to its advantage.
Only issue was there is a bug if you activate the final bosses second form while you still have an extra attack the game will freeze.

I'm not big on platformers, but thought the turn-based combat could carry me through. Unfortunately it just doesn't have enough polish to do so, on either the combat or platforming.
Pros:
+ Been wanting this style combat to show up in another game since Steamworld: Heist, and it does give you that enjoyable feeling of aiming and taking out an enemy with a nice headshot.
+ Most everything is fully voiced which is a nice touch...
Cons:
- Unfortunately, combat stumbles a bit for me:
-- As others have mentioned, sometimes the aiming indicator for the ricochet skill won't clue you in on if it will go through an object or not.
-- Battles don't feel very tactical or offer enough interesting winkles to keep my attention
- The platforming felt very clunky and awkward.
- Even when it was working okay, a lot of the platforming tasks felt tedious.
- Some minor bugs caused the main character to freeze which resulted in having to go back to a checkpoint.
- The story is bogged down with all the western tropes that's been in the genre since Dirty Harry. Nothing new was offered here, would have preferred a silent protagonist honestly.
Overall
I feel like trying to mix platforming and this style combat together ended up watering down both. If this game had been focused on one or the other, I think it might have been better for it. As it is I'm glad I gave it a shot, but really it just has me wanting to start up another playthough of Steamworld: Heist.

I would love to give this game a good review unfortunately I cannot. The story, art, and combat gameplay are stellar but unfortunately the platforming sections that break all the good stuff up are incredibly hard to do with how shoddy an unresponsive the controls tend to be. Plus the death system punishes you by slowly dropping your health down by one pip from where it was at the last check point until your trying to get through a platforming section with on pip of health, and the game will randomly take away your health potion upon death making it even harder so you’ll struggle through a hard platforming section to get a health potion right before a fight so you get 6 health. I would gladly give the game a positive review if an option to skip platforming were to be added or if they made it so you respawned at full health unfortunately I don’t see that happening soon so unless you’re god like at platforming or don’t mind screaming in anger I don’t recommend this.

A great spaghetti western with bugs.
This can be understood in two ways and both are true. Using the insects as characters is a great spin on the traditional western theme and it fits perfectly. Game looks great, it has atmosphere, memorable characters and I find the turn-based combat also a lot of fun. Voice acting is done really well. Having Deus Ex's Adam Jensen voice Jack (the main character) on his quest for revenge fits perfectly. Music is nothing special but it doesn't have to be. It works well for its purpose - co-creating the whole western atmosphere with the visuals. Having to choose from 3 skill trees (fittingly named the Good, the Bad & the Ugly) adds some replayability because all three give a unique spin on the combat and make it different from the other two.
However this game isn't perfect, of course.
My only and also the biggest criticism are the bugs. There are quite a few of them. Luckily, the devs are working their asses off to fix everything. The game is already in much better shape but it still needs fixes. And seeing how hard the devs work on fixing everything, I'm sure that eventually it will be perfect.
I'd still recommend it. Wholeheartedly. It's good. I enjoyed every minute of it.
PROS:
+ Visuals
+ Tactical turn-based Combat
+ Characters and story
+ Western theme
+ Bugs (the good ones, the insects)
+ Voice acting
CONS:
- Bugs (the bad ones, in the code)
EDIT: I almost forgot. Devs I see what you did there with the ending. I understood that reference. :D I hope that there will be a sequel or a story dlc because I'm sure there's still a lot of Jack's story to tell. ;)

Pros:
+ The turn-based combat is fun and gets better and better with stronger enemies and special skills you acquire
+ Very nice visuals and artwork
+ Cool characters with professional voice acting (I especially liked Ace and Ramirez)
+ The RPG elements are simple but well designed
+ Good storytelling
+ El Dorado is super cool
+ After credits scene :)
Cons;
- When playing with a mouse: Aiming at an enemy that is above or below you is sometimes difficult and frustrating.
- During the platforming sections: Some actions like grabbing onto a ladder, pushing/pulling of crates and climbing over the edge could be smoother.
- Occasional issues with the enemy AI
I believe that most of the cons I mentioned will be fixed by the future patches, since the team is working hard on fine-tuning the game. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised... the game was fun to play, so job well done Doublequote Studio!
Recommended.
These bugs scratched my itch for 2D tactical shooters
Blood Will Be Spilled is a side-scrolling, tactical shooter game that goes in similar veins of Steamworld Heist. But instead of being about robots in space, it's about bugs in the western. The main protagonist is Jack, the grounded mosquito bounty hunter, who is on a path of revenge against old acquaintances.
The core gameplay is mainly platforming with tactical shooter battles as the cream of the crop. Even though you only have one character to fight against the mobs in the first half of the game, there are just enough varieties of weaponry and abilities to even the odds. Other aspects of the gameplay is covered by obstacle levels, requiring even your grasp of control maneuvering to progress.
The controls are clearly clunky and lacking of intuitiveness and smoothness in both UI and the platforming aspect, though the latter isn't dominating over the battle aspect, where it's fine enough. The music is suitable to the Western environment and doesn't wear out in the game's length, though a more suspenseful or livelier soundtrack for the battle sequences could have been desired.
As I finished the game after 7 hours, I am surprised by how memorable the game is, what with the unordinary, bug society premise and the intrigue in the West. The characters are likable, even the enemy bosses, which has been helped by meaningful dialogues and decent voice actors. I only wish that dialogue scenes could be skippable since they replay it again during retries with the boss fights.
Blood Will Be Spilled is less polished than the game of its inspiration but if gamers are looking to scratch the Steamworld Heist itch, this product is good enough if you can catch it on a sale and don't mind the design flaws.

If you're looking finally to play as Clint Eastwood in a game, look no more.
Only Clint is a mosquito gunslinger.
In an insect world.
Main character voice actor its like Clint Eastwood's own, which is superb.
You get alot of 60's-70's Spaghetti Western Easter Eggs in this game ( just look at achievment list titles )
For 1,19 € as is on sale now I totally recommend it.
Combat is a bit buggy sometimes, apart that, game is fun and worth its on sale price.

I bought this game immediately after release, mostly because of the awesome art and crazy "insects meets western" combo. I wouldn't lie, at that time the game WAS ridden with bugs, both literally and figuratively speaking. After playing the latest version (1.09), I can say that pretty much all of the bugs were fixed.
I still haven't made it through the entire game, but the combat was a lot of fun (especially when AI misses the one shot that should have killed you) and the hand-drawn visuals are incredible. I also enjoyed the voice acting, which so far covers all of the spoken dialogues (a feat not many indie games can pull, IMO).
If you enjoyed games like Steamworld Heist, you should definitely give Blood will be Spilled a try!

So, after watching playthroughs I really thought this game was for me.
I am a HUGE fan of Steamworld Heist and this just looked like an offshoot adventure set in an insect world with a very similar sort of combat mechanic. Maybe I would have loved this if Steamworld never existed.
Heres the problem, this game is slow and sluggish. To do actions you constantly have to bring up your menu, even if just repeating what you did before. Moving is such a chore with the camera being a real slugish thing to monitor too. The weapons and impact dont have the umph that you want either.
The levels are so linear they should just be a menu of what you want to do.
On a plus side, the comic strips look quite nice, the sound is decent and the voice acting is very cartoony but appropriate.
It tries hard to be a big world but its real as linear as Contra. The combat mechanic isnt nearly as polished as Steamworld. The animations are a little stilted and there is room for improvement on scenery design.
Overall, I thought I was getting something but it ended up being a far inferior product and experience.

A poor man with no name's version of SteamWorld Heist.
It lacks the energy and flair of the other game.
The presentation is good. Leeching Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone for the spaghetti western universe, one can't go wrong. The cartoony insects crossover and the voice-acting are also to my liking.
The tactical gameplay is limited and not terribly exciting, but I could live with it.
The big issue is the inclusion of arcade sections, with an inadequate control scheme and no options to remap it.
Unbearable and ridiculous, that chase scene with a spider. The running is slow, not actual running. It is also choppy, as if the controls were synchronising with a turn-based system. And there is no way to crouch smoothly, without wasting precious time. That parkour is not engaging when it starts, then transforms into an ordeal.
In the end, the rest wasn't good enough for me to insist there.
Edit: Before giving up for good, I gave it a shot with the keyboard. I passed. Not because the kb controls are better (they might be,) but because the spider vanished at the start of the chase, so I strolled. Truly a game of bugs.

The "recommend" comes with some pretty huge caveats, this game is fairly buggy and you'll find yourself having to use that checkpoint reload feature a fair amount. But at the end of the day this is a serviceable western game in the vein of Steamworld Heist and while it could have used the whole "everyone is bugs" aspect better the western stuff is all pretty solid.

the first word that comes to mind is beautiful. It is visible in every pixel that this game was created with love, and the voice acting completes it.
The game about fighting bugs was definitely released with more bugs that authors wanted, but also they are fixing them in a great speed.
Definitely worth to go and spill some, and in case you cannot fight particular bug by mechanics of the game, shout at the authors and you'll get an answer.

Cannot currently recommend this game. there are to many technical issues. I had a few hard crashes and then got a game breaking bug in which the game would not continue after the first boss. No matter what choice i made. I attempted this boss fight 3 times and had no luck the game just froze. Refund request has been raised.
If they fix the bugs and the god awful AI then it might be a good game as it has a real charm to it.

The most grotesque character art I've ever seen in a game. Instead of having pleasant-to-look-at Sunset Riders' style character art, for the most asinine reasons the developers thought: oh, would it be nice to have characters made out of cockroaches and flies? that's definitely gonna have us stand out.
Well good job, you stand out with the most hideous character art out there.
Release some decent add-on patch for free to undo this nonsense and have pleasant human characters and perhaps people will get to try to play the game without the disgust.

been following this since 2018-ish. here are my first thoughts after ~45 minutes:
+ excellent aesthetic and a clean UI.
+ very cool world and premise.
+ fantastic voice acting for Jack.
+ nice music.
+ solidly strategic gameplay so far.
+ well written, if a touch standard for spaghetti Westerns.
- the clichés do detract from the writing already. the whole indigenous shaman, damsel in distress things. it's all stock spaghetti Western fodder; I think this had more potential than a riff on old tropes.
- the voice acting for the bandits is pretty cringe. bad enough that they're blatantly coded as Mexican, worse when the voice actor drops the already silly accent for a line of dialogue, making it crystal clear the racial coding is intentional.
I'm not seeing any bugs (as in, of the gameplay variety) yet, though we'll see. so far, I'm digging it.

Art and overal presentation is spot on, just to experience the world of insect-western is a joy. Voice over quality is top notch (one of the voice actors is "I never asked for this" Elias Toufexis). Only thing holding it down is some jank in the gameplay section, but still, the combat can be fun and satisfying for those who like tactical fights. Worth a try for sure.

The game was initially released in a nonfunctional state. The devs did a herculean task to remove most of its roadblocks, just check the changelogs, it’s a crazy list of problems. For this feat alone I am changing my review to positive as the game is at least playable now.
Regardless – it’s a not a great game. I like the art and bits of the turn based combat, but everything else is rushed (platforming) or not very polished. Kinda recommended only if you really need your Steamworld Heist fix.

And we drink and get older
And some of us even try to get sober
Now here's to the assholes and the last calls
Well city kids, you get what you ask for
And acquaintances turn to friends, I hope those friends they remember me
Hold the night for ransom as we kidnap the memories
Not sure there is a way to express what you meant to me
Sit around a table and use those ears as the centerpiece
Sounds of the city on Capitol Hill
Where I question if what I'm seeing here is real
Cowboy boots doing lines at the bar
Where the time goes slow when you're drinking PBR
Sounds of the city on Capitol Hill
Where I question if what I'm seeing here is real
Cowboy boots doing lines at the bar
Where the time goes slow when you're drinking PBR
Hold on to what you were, forget what you're not
The streets were ours that summer, at least those two blocks
Reminisce on those days, I guess that's OK, you wonder why
Some grow up, move on, close the chapter, live separate lives
The twenty-something confusion before the suit and tie
Strangers become mistakes but those mistakes make you feel alive
Hindsight is vibrant, reality: rarely lit
Memories to collage, paste to the glue that barely sticks
Good Lord, they broke all my shields
Locked bathroom doors, graffiti, and high heels
Until you felt that altitude you don't know how high feels
Party mountain, some don't ever come down from around here
To be young again, I guess it's relative
The camera lights, the whiskey rise, sink into the skin
I fantasize about a second win
Grow a mustache, pick up another bad habit and let the games begin
Sounds of the city on Capitol Hill
Where I question if what I'm seeing here is real
Cowboy boots doing lines at the bar
Where the time goes slow when you're drinking PBR
Sounds of the city on Capitol Hill
Where I question if what I'm seeing here is real
Cowboy boots doing lines at the bar
Where the time goes slow when you're drinking PBR
So here's to the nights, dancing with the band
Strangers into girlfriends from a one night stand
Brought a little liquor and turn up the Johnny Cash
You could bring a receipt to Heaven but you cannot take it back
And this is life, this is real, even when it feels like it isn't
I'd be a goddamn liar to say at times I didn't miss it
So deuces, I turn my back as I walk into the distance
Dip my feet in every once in a while, just to say I visit
And we hold onto these nights
Trying to find out way home by the street light
Over time we figure out this is me, right
Learn a lot about your friends right around two A.M
And acquaintances turn to friends, I hope those friends they remember me
Hold the night for ransom as we kidnap the memories
Not sure there is a way to express what you meant to me
Sit around a table and use those ears as the centerpiece
