best rpg ever i love it sm!!! the character customization is so fun and detailed, allows you to move accessories to different places, and you can adjust them so that they do what you want!!! i made my girlie a beautiful pierced up porcelain doll and shes gorgeous. also the game and story is immaculate, the maps are beautiful, enemies are fun to fight, building your character to be actually good is complicated and time-consuming, which i love. the bosses have super cool designs and the way that they have story to them is beautiful, each character is well-thought out and their backstories tend to be heartbreaking. while at first it seemed like a chill vampire-y rpg, i learned quick enough that it can be pretty emotional. i love code vein!!!

Even with the huge amount of negative reviews and bad stuff Bandai Namco did, i still enjoyed this Anime Dark Souls like game alot. The OST is really good, the map designs leaves little to desire, the reskins and map revamps is little effort, the story feels non-indepth to immerse the player in whats going on and happening, but with all those negatives i still recommend the game cause coming from a casual player that just turned 40 years old the game isnt that punishing or hard like the actual Dark Souls games or Elden Ring.
Alot of backtracking and grinding maybe even looking up guides to get the multiple endings (Currently still progressing in the game) Other then that i still very much like the game alot and the music. The story is really saddening cause of the trials and tribulations and loss of friends, family and potential love interests but i still say give the game a whirl and the customizations are so cool especially youtube tutorials to bring to life your favorite anime husbando or waifu!!!

this is gotta be one of the best game I've ever purchased...
I've always been an anime fan (even though it's not as much now since I've grown up), but it's really cool to see this kind of style on soulsborne games. ACTUALLYI DIDN'T THINK I WOULD FIND THIS GAME EITHER. ALSO!! this is by far the one who got me into this type of game mechanics (yes I died MORE than 30 times on the 2nd boss). but somehow, I actually managed to pass and complete the game. everything about this game is so well made, LIKEEE ALL THE SCENES, THE BACKSTORIES, THE PLOT EVEN THE CHARACTERS!!
THE AVATAR CUSTOMIZATION IS EVERYTHING!!! I swear, it's gotta be the true final boss of the game. I spent over 2 hours making my character cause I really want bro to look good during cutscenes. RESULT?? IT'S ALL WORTH ITTTT. he's majestic, gorgeous, and beautiful.... everything in combined omg.
THE DETAILS ARE AWESOMEEEE I'M LITERALLY IN LOVE I CAN'T EXPRESS HOW I'M FEELING RN.
also bro hear me out on louis BROOOOOOO from the moment I met him until the end of the game, he's literally my partner FOR EVERYTHING (I only switched to other partners 2-3 times just to test out). I been high over heels for him it's NOT OKAY I MIGHT AS WELL SEEK THERAPY OKAY BUT JUST HEAR ME OUTTTT.
peak game, straight out 10/10 Y'ALL I WISH I COULD GIVE MORE RATINGS AAAAAAA.

This was a quick 100%, and I'm going to recommend it because I really like the characters and a lot of ideas in this game, from story to world building it's fantastic. The boss fights are also very fun. HOWEVER.
Be prepared for a rather frustrating experience. During my 4 runs of this game, I came across a ton of bugs. Anything from softlocking to insta death inside an elevator because it felt like it. Also this game really likes to throw bs your way. From having many enemies near ledges that can simply push you off, to 5 traps in a room with 5 very strong enemies ready to screw you up. And by far the worst aspect of this game, the dungeon design.
The cathedral of blood is just 101 on how not to make a fucking dungeon. You have like idk 5 overlayed floors that go all over the damn place. The map does not help you because it's unreadable from how the dungeon is made. It is also way too long for its own good. Some of the other dungeons have similar problems.
Multiplayer seems to be dead unfortunately, I spent like 2 hours trying to find someone to play, and I couldn't find any match. Only occassionally would one match pop up, and it would be very unstable. It's likely that you'll be disconnected mid boss fight.
Don't buy the DLC for this game separately, just buy the deluxe edition. The DLC is super short. You can finish everything in like 20 minutes, but the 3 boss fights are very fun.
ANYWAY, Eva my beloved. Buy the game for her, that's all.

For a first time souls-like you could probably go for a lot worse. Writing was kinda ass, characters forgettable, lore is very potential-man-like but the gameplay and music especially were solid, great even. You could play however you like and it didnt take much investment to switch builds which was very cool. I don't see myself revisiting this anytime soon but I'll look forward to Code Vein 2 whenever that drops. I'd recommend waiting for a sale if you really want to try this out before the sequel drops, which is likely to happen shortly before it's launch.

Tedious, grindy, and stats far too complex for a casual play through. Did i mention some bosses are immune to stats? I.e. what you may end up wasting your time investing in?
Can only recommend on a deep discount, and with a friend that you can 1. talk to 2. doesn't mind reconnecting after every boss, midboss, whenever you want to restore your healing, whenever you want to activate the blood codes (necessary for the good ending), and a couple of other times i think i forgot.
It took a couple of years a co-op partner willing to sit through that to find the "fun" in code vein. It does get better in the end game+. Mid game is a slog. *on the first playthrough.*
Check global completion rate on achievements. 60% beat the second boss and only 50% beat the 4th out of about 15.
Are you really going to finish this game?

Fun stuff, would recommend. Some things are a bit of a drag and one particular fight involving a certain duo of elite mobs (you know the one im talking about), docks points from the total score.
Most of the more fun builds are locked at late game, and with how much you can shift and change build mid run theres not that much replay value after playing through it when you finally have access to the capstone of the build you were planning.
Top Tier character customisation though, easy timesink there with how much you can fiddle the accessories. Being unable to toggle the mask is eh, but one can live with it.

Played on steam deck mainly but switched back and forth between deck and main PC. Pretty decent performance on the Deck. Definitely some slow down in certain spots especially when transitioning between different areas. Crashed 1 or 2 times on Deck, but crashed a several times on PC. Beautiful game and definitely a fun souls like. Having a companion definitely made it easier, especially cause i'm not the best at souls like games. Got stuck on the Skull King, and after dying over 50 times, i didn't feel too compelled to keep on trying. My biggest gripe was when i changed the controller scheme certain changes wouldn't stick upon next boot up. 8/10

On extreme sale, this game is... fine.
I don't enjoy the level design, but I could see how some might like it. Most levels are twisty, winding mazes. This is backed by a poor 2D map that isn't really up to the task of showing the multiple levels and floors each level consists of. And, unfortunately, the graphics can't really support a deep maze level design. Every corridor looks the same. You can't really use the levels as landmarks. It starts to blend together fairly quickly.
Still, if you like Souls in narrow mazes, the level design won't be a bad thing.
The worst part of the game, however, is the combat. And that feels like a death knell for the game.
Each weapon type is reasonably easy to pick up and relatively hard to master. I like that each type has a different suite of moves. The idea of combining different classes into your own custom ability set is a good one. You have a LOT of options at your disposal for any given situation: ranged attacks, buffs, debuffs, and drains. I love the way you regain "mana" in game as well - it gently encourages a more aggressive playstyle as a backstab / parry / special attack will actually increase your overall available mana for the inevitable boss fight. Neat.
The moment-to-moment combat, however, is just bad. I don't know who dropped the ball, but weapons whiff through character models with nearly every other strike. This happens with both the PC and the monsters by the way - so I guess at least it's "fair".
It just feels rotten to play: you block, block, dodge, aaaaaand STRIKE and oh your sword just went through the enemy with no hit registered, and now you're dead. Or, on the other side, you screw up a dodge roll and get ready to eat a fireball to the dome... except it just clips through your character model. Like I said, it IS "fair" in the sense that collision detection is off throughout the game. Doesn't feel good. I read other reviews calling combat "floaty" and I think this is why.
Note that I'm not talking about short mobs. Some mobs are half-sized (dogs, slimes) and a horizontal slash will usually whiff over their heads. That's not fun, but, I get it. I can change my playstyle on those mobs. That's why we have so many different tools and options at our disposal!
I am instead talking about clearly hitting an enemy, but the weapon hit doesn't register. It happens on random mobs, bosess, and on your own character.
Caveat emptor on this one.

Score: 6.2/10.
My first dive into a non-fromsoftware souls like game and it starts with weeb souls. I remember when this game came out and tried playing it 2 times (through means that were not steam) and just couldn't get really keep going, but I also didn't really play single player or souls games in general back then. Now after liking both of those things, I can say this game is okay. Gameplay wise, it's much worse than fromsoft games but that's to be expected as they're the top dogs of it. Story was decent but also felt weird at times.
To talk about the gameplay, I never though I would actually care so much about level design in souls games until this one. Cathedral of blood might be one of my least favorite level designs in a game, and that is mostly because it's just infuriatingly confusing. It's just a jumble of reused textures over and over that makes you lose where the hell you are on the map. Adding into the fact that you need to traverse vertically and not just horizontally makes it a rather unpleasant experience. The bosses were also pretty mid for the most part. They're very easy and extremely quick. I felt like I was melting bosses in under a minute and always thought there was going to be another health bar.
The other thing I didn't like about the gameplay is that your moves feel like they have no weight. I was using a zweihander with S+ strength by the end of the game and so visually and how I'm used to strength builds you would think that your character would be staggering consistently or one-shotting things. But, it almost felt RNG if I would stagger an enemy or if I was going to get staggered. Not to mention that there are certain moves enemies use that can stun you for a second without being able to dodge that lead an immediate attack afterwards, which could take upwards to 60% of your health in like 1.5 seconds. The scaling felt strange at times and your moves don't have hyper armor, meaning you have to really pick and choose when to use them.
Story was the most interesting part, especially knowing there's going to be a code vein 2. But honestly, after getting what is considered the "true" ending and seeing the trailer for the sequel I have no idea how these games will be connected outside of theme. I liked how the game set this world to be darker atmosphere and a lot of the memories and certain cutscenes are relatively sad/on the darker side. And yet, if you are following the path that leads to the "true" ending, these moments can be instantly downplayed with a happy moment literally right afterwards. I found that somewhat comical and very anime-esque but also didn't fit the gritty atmosphere they built in the beginning of the game.
All in all, this game is on the fringe of me to recommend it. It's very short and easy for a souls game, and yet can be incredibly frustrating at times. I didn't bother with the depths content as the gameplay wasn't interesting enough for me to want to do that, including the DLC which is just more depth content. I'd wait for this game to be on sale and personally wouldn't bother getting the DLC (although I didn't play it so I can't say for certain how it is). I think if you can get it for $10-15 it'll be a solid time.

Honestly amazing game. As an avid Fromsoft fan who's played every soulsbourne game from Darksouls 1-3, this game has managed to improve on it in almost every aspect. The art design, enemy design and AI, and my favorite part, the gameplay mechanics. I never thought a game could have such an in-depth meta thats practical and so diverse that its actually FUN to experiment with new play-styles. Also, its HARD AS FUCK. Regardless of your character level, even early enemies still pose a challenge if you arent playing skillfully or tactically. 3 will gang up on you at a time and stunlock you if you arent timing your dodges and attacks right, some will even execute a parry animation if youre just mashing your attacks. And the storyline and lore is super immersing and intriguing to top it all off. Im surprised more people dont mention this game when they discuss souls-like. This is the perfect mix of originallity and genre-familiarity for anyone looking for something a little more beyond the souls series. Especially if you like anime vampire mercenaries fighting mutants in the post-apocalypse. Think Tokyo Ghoul mixed with Gungrave. Honestly cant say enough good things about this game lol, 10/10.

Dark anime Souls. It's definitely corny, but it plays well and it's Souls-like so I enjoyed it. There are lots of build options to experiment with. Most bosses were a breeze, so it was refreshing to see the difficulty ramp up near the end. The DLCs only add a few hours of gameplay, but the bosses there are fun extra content. I'd recommend it if you're into Souls-likes and don't mind the anime aesthetic.

A fun, albeit cliche, souls-like experience. This game combines classic plot beats seen within numerous anime with the thrilling combat and customization of souls-like games. The bosses are very artistically striking and fun to play against, despite some mechanical stiffness. While there is some enemy variety, it often builds slowly and reuses a lot of the same foes you will face. The story (while very predictable) is overall what I would consider the best part of the game, touching on familiar beats often seen in various shonen/seinen media while still making for a rewarding, entertaining experience.
Overall, this game is a 7.5/8 out of 10. The combat is fun, the character creator is gorgeous, the story is entertaining and the bosses mix things up a little. The only flaws I would say this game has were some problems with character hair clipping into different armor options, some jank involving bosses and perhaps that the story was a bit predictable, for those looking for a more surprising experience. Also, the DLC was a bit weak: A common complaint is that they were way too short, it would have most likely been better to release all three packs at once as opposed to selling them seperately.

Anime souls. Enjoyed the combat, didn't care so much for the plot. Thinking back, this is mainly appealing if you want the anime-aesthetic, otherwise FromSoftware titles or Lies of P, Khazan, etc., are better in my opinion.

Good game, fantastic game, possibly, the greatest game of all time. In the history of games this is what makes games great again. BUT..... having to replay co-op in two worlds for collectibles and story progress is a bummer, only complaint, fun game play and a nice twist on the JRPG/Souls-like genre. Played it before on playstation, enjoyed it greatly. For sure a great recommendation to players looking to introduce themselves or friends into a souls-like game without the punishment and Intensity of an actual From Software game. The game itself is probably worth the money if you are really interested in the game but the dlc's are not. They have good game play but not hours of content for the prices. Overall the game is a bop but I'd wait for a sale of at least $40 base game maybe $10 season pass for dlcs. The game is 5 years old at least and probably needs a lower price tag by now,

I had picked up ol' Code Vein a couple times prior to my most recent sitting here where I had actually finished it. Never had much problems with the game in the past. Just a classic case of life happening, dropped the game, then didn't come back. Just about a couple years ago I really got back into enjoying games proper, and just FINALLY finishing Code Vein after these past years since it's release, I love it even more.
Taking the time to really engage with the games systems and different ways of playing/ building your character was such a joy. I've grown to be a wicked sucker for games that incentivize experimentation with it's many systems (i.e classes or build options like the Blood Codes here) by rewarding the player by letting them combine aspects of these different play options after spending time with them, to kind of craft your ideal play style. Had a ton of fun with that (Bayonet was such a stellar weapon to sit down with and make a core part of my build as well).
Story, world, cast of characters, atmosphere, all on point, which is pretty typical of Shift. Loved them since the ol' God Eater days. I was already pretty stoked for the Code Vein 2 announcment. Now I'm even more so after finally finishing this game. Can't recommend it enough, especially as a "Souls-Like" option to pick up.

One of the best Souls-Like games I've played! It's about as close to Dark Souls as you can get, in my opinion. Great graphics, combat feels good, the world is beautiful, ...there's a story...(lol), the voice acting is good. Honestly, I don't really have anything bad to say about this game. Also, I played it on Steam Deck and it ran almost perfect on max settings! Had a 1 or 2 graphical blips during intense combat, but otherwise, perfect experience! I would highly recommend this game to any Dark Souls fans.

Played this back in 2020 or so and gotten neutral ending , After so long finally got the time to do the other ending of the game and can finally give a review of the game after getting the Neutral and Good Ending & Secret ending.
Just a bit of my view into this game: Game is a pretty interesting interpretation into the God eater Universe games which I have played em all and enjoyed the story BUT CodeVein also its own standalone game that doesn't exclusively rely on the preexisting setup alone & does it's own thing with the story and has a conclusive ending which is both open ended and closed at same time.
Some of the story before how things got to in main game is told in DLC , bosses/horrors in DLC heavily hint at a shared universe where the flagship aragami are the horrors of this game which is neat little easter egg that God Eater fans can appreciate.
WOULD SAY GIVE THIS A SHOT AND TRY IT BY NOT APPROACHING IT LIKE A SOULSLIKE BUT AS AN INDIVIDUAL GAME cause sometimes u are essentially make things harder for your self as this isn't exactly an souls game but something more soul's adjacent in gameplay mechanics but there is an greater focus on story (but with lore) & partner dynamic rather than lore which replaces story in soulslike games.
Or if you are interested in CodeVein 2 and just want to try it out , story branches out in 2 as its own contained story (from what we have seen , no guarantee on whether it will tie in to 1 in anyway later in game as u progress) so u can just pick up 2 and run with it. But give this game a try to get a handle on the mechanics
An apt analogy would be CodeVein is what DarkSouls was to soulslike , And CodeVein 2 is the EldenRing of soulslike

Bought this on sale for 85% off expecting a mid game, was pleasantly surprised
Gameplay takes a while to click as since it's much faster and floatier than other souls-likes, but once it does you'll be able to just destoy hordes of enemies. Whole game becomes easier as you go if you explore all zones for the upgrade materials and make a cohesive build as you go
Story is as over-the-top edgy as it gets, you'll either love it or hate it
There are aspects of the game where the devs show some truly GENIUS ideas, like the Blood Code system which allows you to change builds on the fly, but at the same time there are parts where they really dropped the ball, like the infamous Cathedral zone and the last boss in general
All in all, a pretty good game, somewhat underrated IMO, it's a diamond in the rough.
Hoping for the sequel to play more like a traditional souls game
A (not so) well-refined souls-like
Starting with the most important, it is worth your time and effort. I had quite a big amount of fun and adrenaline playing Code Vein for a quantity of reasons with make it stand out of the other souls-likes I have played.
1. Magic system. Like in the most souls-likes, you have a light attack, heavy attack, charged heavy attack… and dozens of spells and skills. Being a mage is conventionally considered to be an inferior option in such a type of games, but here it is smartly intertwined with a melee playstyle. First of all, the cast does not require anything but the necessary amount of mana, unlike Dark Souls, where you either need a special hand or a staff. Secondly, you build your mana with melee attack, so that you have to get close and give a few hits in order to get enough mana for another spell. Moreover, you can get significantly more mana from backstabs or parry, which gives those attacks one more reason to be used in addition to a high damage. And the types of spells are numerous: passive or active, healing, attacking with a melee, attacking with fire/ice/other sorts of balls (which greatly alleviates the need to deal with numbers of general mobs and rangers), trading abilities like getting an increased stats on everything and a full heal, but inevitably dying after a minute. It was fun to interact with this system and switching them in accordance to present needs that it is definitely one of the high points of the game.
2. Bosses. I raged pretty often at how unfair I thought them to be, but the overwhelming majority of them was actually doable on your own and absorbing. When you get the hang of their movement, they fall easily, but, unsurprisingly, it takes some time. I have been left with a pleasant feeling about the bosses after a completion. However, the second final boss was the end for me. It is just a giant thing that throws AoE attacks at you, because otherwise you just stay behind and hit its belly as much as you are allowed to do so. At this point I just gave up and summoned a companion the second time throughout the whole game, because it was just tedious to fight it. The first time, however, was when you meet “Ornstein and Smough” of the local kind. And I wasn’t left with the opinion that this boss fight was designed properly, as you get spammed by two enemies, one of which will gladly throw ranged attacks at your back, while you are fighting the second one. So, I have thought: “If the game allows itself to fight 2 to 1, why can’t I summon a companion to make it fair?” And after this, it finally became possible for me to beat them (still with difficulties)
3. Acquiring skills and interaction with NPCs. If you have played or heard about Persona, you will guess the source of inspiration, but it wasn’t copied one-to-one. In order to unlock new gifts, you need to search for fragments of memory and then restore it in your hub. Not only it shows you interesting facts about your comrades, but incentivizes you to explore the map. It was indubitably one of the reasons to clear every location. And (if anyone ever reads it) it is crucial to getting different ending, so you have to keep that in mind.
4. Locations. Diverse places have always been sort of a requirement for every souls-like, and Code Vein doesn’t let you down. Picturesque (or not so) locations are definitely modeled fine, but only a few of them can actually get to your memory (because some of them look quite alike, so it isn’t such an easy deal to tell the difference). The good thing is that the locations are quite puzzled, so you will have to search for shortcuts like in the first Dark Souls, which is definitely a plus. It gives the location needed complexity.
Summing this all, Code Vein is a great souls-like, which preserves the core of those games and adds new features to make a gameplay unique and engaging. You should definitely give it a try if you like this genre.

Also, the cathedral isn't that bad, besides one section of it which is pretty bad...

the camera angles are very bad at times, and doging when ur locked onto a target can sometimes just not let you move backwards especially if ur not used to it yet so at first it was very unintuitive.
but if you like souls-like games and wanna see a sick ass animation while idling on the start menu then this game is for you, this was my first souls-like experience and i enjoyed it every step of the way

This is an amazing game. I am not into souls games... and in fact i have semi watched Lirik play almost every souls game over the ten long years i have been watching him and usually end up stopping to watch cause i am bored. I bought this because it was an anime game and looked really cool. I still played through it and enjoyed it and the story is very cool. Somehow as i got further into the game and the difficulty steadily increased i actually found myself really enjoying my... to the point that i caught myself saying that if souls games were this hard and fun maybe i am into them. Since then i have acquired a few included what i think is considered the greatest of them all elden ring. When i finally got into it as a souls game i also looked up to see how comparative it is to other souls games and it seems pretty up their in terms of difficulty... so if you are looking for a great souls game with a great story then you can do no wrong with this game.

In 2025, the combat (specifically the dodging and the parrying) do feel clunky and outdated. But The game overall is a blast, bought it back in 2020 and only recently gotten back to it to get all achievements. Would recommend buying even now for peak anime dark souls experience.
