5.1/10 but creative and memorable.
I didn't want to recommend this game... but it was memorable and creative. The writing and the story are compelling enough that I never wanted to skip any of the dialogue or cutscenes, and I cared about the characters. There are tons of cutscenes that keep the story fresh and make each day feel unique, while also always flowing nicely with the grander relationship story. Ultimately, and probably the biggest reason I feel okay recommending it, is because it will be a game that you will remember and spend some time thinking about when you are not playing.
Why I was really leaning towards not recommending:
The start is so slow. It isn't until 2–3 hours in that you start finding some key items and upgrades that feel like significant progress and make the exploration feel meaningful. Basically, it felt like a long time before the game made you start thinking ahead and feel invested/interested in what is going to happen next or what you want to do next.
Finally, traversal as a whole—which I think is supposed to be the gameplay on offer—is just unobtrusive when it's at its best, and when it's not at its best is pretty dang annoying... like why make the fast travel system so cumbersome? (Oh, I better scrub this island clean or it's going to be a boring pain in the butt to get back...) It's not a very fun form of motivation.
The other gameplay element is turn-based combat (not my favorite in general), but the way it is executed obfuscates things like your health and enemy attack timings and weaknesses in a way that makes things more difficult while at the same time making things less strategic/engaging.
Positives:
The music is mostly quite nice. The art direction is top-notch (although things can get a bit samey). The writing, story, and character interactions elevate average to below-average gameplay into a game you will likely be happy you played all the way through.
-The game play isn't very engaging...I think you are supposed to find the gliding around to be something super engaging that you will be happy to lose yourself in...it's not...its actually a bit janky imo because tight turns lock you in on direction for some reason. Finding flow threads also just becomes mostly annoying when you want to traverse efficiently.
