Skul: The Hero Slayer ------------------------------------------------------- First thing first. Skul: The Hero Slayer is a good game... Now that that's out of the way. Let's get to business. In Skul you'll fight three things. 1. The games difficulty. 2. The lords of RNG pounding your pelvis every step of the way. Which makes you question your sanity. 3. The urge to throw your fist into a cement wall. *Do not try at home without parental guidance* Spoiler Alert! ------------------------------------------------------- Things I dislike about Skul: 1. Thief. He was unloved by his parents and decided to be an edgelord. As such he has the ability to disappear faster then his dad going out for milk. His hitframes become delayed when stunned or frozen and as such hits Skul in the weirdest possible positions. 2. The layering. When you reach the point where you have a lot of spell effects. Your own effects may in some cases make your enemy invisible. This is frustrating. It is frustrating to no ends. When you get hit by a ranged attack that was hidden behind five layers of enemies. I want to see how far my head goes through the previous mentioned cement wall. 3. Buggy effects. When you stun an enemy or freeze them. Charging enemies can stop their animations. But post-stun or freeze. Their projectiles or attacks comes out like a slap out of the fifth dimension. Beware. Then we have the Warriors shield. Indicating the wrong direction. This has made me scream. Scream loud. In anger. And fury. And exasperation. I don't ever want to see the adventurers again. Things I like about Skul: Good bosses and stuff. Addictive as heck. Would recommend.

Definitely one of my top rouge-likes. Skul starts off feeling rather difficult, as you try and get use'd to the games mechanics and timings, but as you find your groove you fill find yourself sinking several hours into the game. Skuls main claim to fame is the players ability to swap skulls (being able to swap between 2 different ones at at time) providing different abilities and skill to change up your playstyle. Mixed with the the items you pickup, which are part of different sets that can unlock even more bonuses, and you have very modular runs that are a ton of fun.

Some good some bad here. I like the sprites. Controls feel responsive and smooth. Power-ups, level design, and general structure of progression all suck. It's a grind to get anywhere in the game and the pay-off doesn't ever feel like I've improved anything at all, so good job making a lot of work feel like nothing. Level design: My main gripe is with the beginning. Why must I fall for an hour before I get to choose which door is going to take me to whatever randomly selected layout I'm going to face? It's not cute or fun, it just feels like more of a slog especially when considering what it takes to power one self up in this game. Power ups: Oh boy, the joy I feel when I get a new power and it does f*** all. You don't really notice anything until you've collected a few power ups and only then if they happen to overlap with the ones you already got. Rogueish in all its forms, the grind made me put my controller down. For me, it needs some work, but I'm sure there are plenty of folk out there for it. Can't stand it personally. Lol

It's a fun little game I played a lot on PS4, got it on a great sale here, and glad to see how great I did with how stacked in your favor the first couple runs are.

game is awesome, BUT HOLY FUCK ARE ADVENTURERS HARD AND UNFAIR, THEY ARE HARDER THAN FUCKING DARK FIRST HERO, it completely ruins the experience and fun, but everything else is nice skill issue or not, i died to adventurers more than any other bosses, so it must mean something is not right overall, good game

Skul: The Hero Slayer is a refreshingly inventive and challenging roguelike action platformer that stands out for its unique twist on character progression and fast-paced combat. Developed by SouthPAW Games, this title plunges players into a dark fantasy world where you control Skul, a tiny but fierce skeleton warrior fighting to rescue the Demon King from invading heroes. What immediately captures attention is Skul’s ability to swap out his skull mid-combat, each skull granting different abilities, stats, and playstyles. This mechanic injects a layer of strategic depth and variety that keeps the gameplay fresh and constantly evolving, rewarding experimentation and mastery. From the first moments, Skul: The Hero Slayer hooks players with its tight and responsive controls. The combat feels fluid and precise, allowing for quick dashes, agile jumps, and a variety of attacks that combine to create thrilling combos and evasive maneuvers. Enemies are diverse and demand different tactics, ranging from relentless foot soldiers to gigantic bosses that test your reflexes and pattern recognition. The challenge is substantial but fair, with each run pushing players to improve their skills and make smart choices about which skulls and upgrades to equip. Death is a natural part of the cycle, and the roguelike elements ensure that every run is unique thanks to procedurally generated levels and a constantly shifting arsenal. Visually, the game employs a vibrant, hand-drawn pixel art style that perfectly balances dark fantasy themes with a playful, almost cartoonish charm. The environments are richly detailed, from gloomy castles and haunted forests to eerie caves, each filled with traps, secrets, and atmospheric touches that deepen immersion. The character animations are fluid and expressive, giving Skul a surprising amount of personality despite his skeletal appearance. The soundtrack complements the action perfectly, with energetic tunes that heighten tension during combat and more subdued melodies that evoke the game’s mysterious lore. One of Skul: The Hero Slayer’s greatest strengths lies in its progression and customization systems. The wide array of skulls you collect—from the straightforward Warrior and the nimble Ranger to the magical Sorcerer and the hulking Giant—allows for a multitude of playstyles and strategic options. Players can tailor their approach depending on the enemies ahead or their personal preference, mixing and matching skull abilities to suit their needs. Alongside skull upgrades, various passive and active items add further layers of customization, making each run feel distinct and rewarding. The game also features a compelling narrative woven through cryptic dialogue and environmental storytelling. While not the primary focus, the story adds motivation and context to Skul’s quest, enriching the experience without overshadowing the core gameplay loop. It’s a dark tale of war, sacrifice, and rebellion that gradually unfolds as players progress, inviting curiosity and investment. However, Skul: The Hero Slayer is not without its challenges for some players. The difficulty can be punishing, especially for those new to roguelikes or action platformers, and the randomized nature of runs means success often hinges on luck as well as skill. Some may find the learning curve steep or the repeated deaths frustrating. Additionally, while the pixel art is charming, it might not appeal to those who prefer more modern or realistic visuals. In conclusion, Skul: The Hero Slayer is a brilliantly crafted roguelike that combines fast-paced, skillful combat with innovative character mechanics and a rich visual style. Its unique skull-swapping system breathes new life into the genre, offering deep strategic possibilities and high replay value. For players who enjoy challenging platformers with a dark yet whimsical tone, Skul delivers an addictive, rewarding experience full of surprises and fierce battles. It’s a must-play for anyone looking to test their reflexes and embrace the chaos of a relentless, ever-changing adventure. Rating: 9/10

While this game is quite fun, the dark mirror 5+ just seems to become, either get Arms or Artifact, Every other inscription is far too weak to clear even trash mobs in rooms. Hidden blade? total crap. Rapidity? total crap. Fairy tale?? total crap. Masterpiece? more like Mastertrash. It's just frustrating that there is the illusion of choice. Theres like 2 dozen inscriptions. only 2 are any good. It's just dumb. Especially for a single player game. Make them all strong. I don't get it.

There is too little variation for this to make an interesting roguelike. I don't know if you unlock more bosses as the game goes on, but I'm already tired of fighting the tree guy in the first level every time, even though the lore tells us that we should have freed him after beating him the first time. Also, limiting us to 9 trinkets plateaus early and there are often times where I get to the shop and I don't feel like buying anything because nothing is better than what I already have. A shame, because I like the art and the concept.

The game is good yes, until you get to the third major boss and the fourth area, at that point the game just becomes spam and unfun, the final area which is fifth is perfect for a final area though, but my god can the guy who made the fourth area go fuck himself

Disturbing indie clone of dead cells. npc says: "bring 10 bones". You destroy good items to get this bones, give it to npc and npc says: "i dont need those bones now". Mmmmmm. You touch the chest and it insta kills you, restart mmmm. All rooms are almost the same (2-3 random rooms). Enemies are boring (you just jump around and wait till make 10 attacks on them).

Sorry, Neowiz. If you want me to turn this into a positive review, why don't you spend 25 hours dying over and over for the ability to revive at 60% health first?

After a couple years of playing this game, I've come to realize what a testament it is to the simple yet amazing talent of a well thought out concept. Yes, this will never be the flashiest, most story-driven, or even anywhere near the most comedic roguelite you'll play as a beginner or veteran of the genre, but goddamn does it have passion at its heart. Something as simple as the fluidity of controls combined with an absolutely genius and intuitive Majora's Mask-inspired style of gameplay that sees you switching skulls as you battle not only feels different, but so right and satisfying at the same time. So, this might honestly go down as one of my favorite roguelites of all time, and that's coming from someone who absolutely adores games like Dead Cells, Enter the Gungeon, and Risk of Rain, all of which boast their own incredible feats and sense of innovation. it just goes to show that sometimes, all you need to make something great is a good idea and a whole lotta love. So, yeah, buy the game. It's worth it, even off sale.

Really fun. The replay value is definitely there with all the items and builds you can go for, plus i love all the skuls. Wish there was more about this game out there, and hopefully they make a spiritual successor with more features for post game shenanigans.
