I have not been playing the game itself long enough (yet) to give a full-fledged review of it. But in the time spent so far, the game has been so impressive that I've just done something here that I've only done once before: I've bought a "supporter's pack" (this one). Why? I feel strongly that this game genuinely deserves the support.
Does this little pack give anything I can't live without? Of course not. But the extra features it does give seem pleasant enough, and the main game seems to me somewhat under-priced. Even If this game never improves one bit more (which seems unlikely), I still anticipate that it will provide a very large amount of happy use over the coming months and possibly years.
Why do I say this? Well, I've liked similar games in the past (other reviews, of the main game, mention the sort of games I mean). But this game seems to have provided me with an even more painless entry, and it provides a vast potential for interesting decision-making and balancing choices, in a very nice graphic setting.
My little village is now within a stone's throw (if we throw rocks at a calendar) of celebrating its first little Christmas. I can't count on Christmas lights, I suppose, but I look forward to a first snow, even though I realize some hardship (for the cyber-villagers) may come with it. But, perhaps if I can make some sound decisions, and pay attention to a lot of detail, the village will become beautiful and instill a good feeling for having created it and helped it to survive and then thrive.
Yeah, I know, it's just a game. But it's an engaging one, even for -- perhaps even especially for -- an older adult. I looked it over for weeks before I bought it. But it finally couldn't be resisted and -- lo and behold after giving it a shot -- I couldn't resist the DLC and the Supporter's pack, either. This might turn out to be one of the very best games in its competitive genre. And giving it a bit of extra support seems likely to help that happen.
Since this is a somewhat glowing review, let me make it plain that I have no relationship to or involvement with the developers, and don't know much about them. But now that I've spent some time with the game, they have my respect and even some gratitude for the care and imagination they have demonstrated already in the making of this game. I guess that makes me a "supporter" of the game. So it seemed pretty natural to spend the relatively modest amount of money needed to buy this "supporter's" pack, as well as the recent DLC. Now that I've spent some time with the game, I can say that I wouldn't have resented spending the extra money even as an increase to the game's own initial price, which seems to me now like it was a bargain.
