I love what the game does as its almost like going through a video game museum unfortunately even though the graphics change the gameplay make little to no innovation.

Evoland ingredients: 30% Zelda, 30% Dragonquest, 30% Final Fantasy and 10% Diablo Evoland follows some almost copyright infringing characters as they travel the land fighting monsters in an attempt to defeat a great evil. As is the usual affair for games of yesteryear. The big draw here is the progression in the game and how the game evolves and effectively updates as the game progresses, going from classic 2D sprites to 3D models and such in addition to a variety of mechanics being added as you progress. Overall the game is a little clunky which feels accurate to the games it's referencing whilst also being a sign of the time this game was released. It's not bad overall and the game is rather short (2.5 hours to play, 5 to complete fully). One thing to note is that the game DOES NOT RUN ON THE STEAM DECK. It has crazy delay. There may be fixes but I just said screw it and opted to play it on my PC. All in all, a decent short game, nothing amazing but great if you get the references and nostalgia.

Alright, finally beat this game. I played it for over 3 hours maybe 3 years ago or so, but today I finally finished it after starting a fresh playthrough. Over 90% completed. Beautiful Styles You start off with low-colour & pixelated sprites as was standard decades ago, get upgraded colours a couple times to see the progression of gaming graphics, and eventually you unlock 3D. Very Nostalgic There are LOTS of references for longtime gamers, the developers were openly inspired by such game series as Zelda, Diablo, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and more. Quite a Lot of Fun! There may only be a few hours worth of entertainment in this game, but it's very high-quality hours with pleasant graphics & music. There's even an aspect in which you switch between pixelated 2D and higher-quality 3D which implements a time-travel aspect. My only real gripe is that there's no sprint button unfortunately, and I struggled A LOT with the final boss. Died several times THINKING I was doing damage, only to find out I wasn't and had to approach the problem from a different angle. But really I shoulda figured it out sooner instead of dying repeatedly with mounting frustration. So I think that can be fairly regarded as a 'skill issue,' a me-problem rather than a game-problem. So yeah, I HIGHLY recommend this game especially if you've got nostalgic memories of playing 20+ year old games and even 30+ year old games. Or, if you're a younger gamer whether you have indeed tried retro gaming of videogames that came before your time or you haven't done retro gaming but you'd like to get a taste of how those who came before you had enjoyed gaming, this is a great one to try out. Hope you have a good day, gamers! :) Now, I'm gonna be playing Final Fantasy 7 soon for the first time in many years lol Last I recall playing it was with PS1 CDs (3 if memory serves, or was it 4?) on my PS2, probably back in 2006 or something like that. Good times... well done, developers! I wish you further success in your videogame developing careers!

It's a short, pleasant game. I enjoyed it for a couple playthroughs, but after that it's not much fun.

Basic controls are unplayable on Steam Deck. As soon as I got 3D movement there was a bug that causes massive input delay, essentially making the more difficult fights impossible. If you want it to work you need to use keyboard binding. Besides that issue, the game is a fun adventure. Pays homage to multiple milestones in game development over the years, and includes a lot of fun references to well known RPG titles.
