Recommended for: If you're a fan of Lovecraftian stories and first-person horror adventures then Call of Cthulhu might be something to try out. The game doesn't excel at anything but is certainly not bad. The story is decent with some interesting characters and nice voice acting. Gameplay is somewhat of a mixed bag. The majority involves talking to people and just looking at items. There are only a couple of puzzles in the game and very little brainpower is needed to finish it. There are some action moments mostly requiring stealth which feels a bit half-baked. There is also an RPG element where you can allocate skill points to certain abilities. Depending on your build you can get a different perspective on the story but the main storyline remains mostly the same. It can influence the game's ending as there are multiple endings depending on your choices. My experience: As a Lovecraft fan myself, I had an overall nice time with Call of Cthulhu. But I have to admit the game is average on most levels and I think it had much more potential. One problem I had is that the story felt very generic. It's like they processed the Lovecraft books through an AI and just prompted, "Write me a Lovecraft story." You get a story that ticks all the boxes for a Lovecraft story but is missing the essence of what makes those stories so great. For me, it made the story incredibly predictable and I absolutely felt no tension or surprise during my entire playthrough, which is not great for a horror game. Another thing that highlights the wasted potential is the skill point system. It's certainly an interesting idea but unfortunately it just doesn't offer much variation to your playthrough. For example, if you need to open a door to get into a room, you have several options: using force, lockpicking, or simply persuading someone to open it. But the end result is still the same, you end up in the same room regardless of how you opened the door. I think they could have done more with this. Technical: I had no major technical issues while playing, except for some problems with the audio levels. Especially in cutscenes the volume is suddenly much higher or lower. Call of Cthulhu is not really about fast action or easy fun. It feels more like a slow trip into madness and fear. With its dark world of shadows and strange sounds, the game draws you in like a gripping mystery. The environments are detailed and carefully crafted, making the creepy atmosphere almost tangible. Every corner feels alive with tension, and the sense of dread builds steadily as you explore deeper. Fans of psychological horror will find themselves right at home.

you know the game is good when it constantly crashes, has an alcoholic white guy trying to solve a case and is filled with eldritch horrors

Very immersive, great writing (also, rather strong Shutter Island and possibly David Lynch vibes). I had lots of fun, and somewhere in the middle of the play-through had to remind myself that I'm not watching a movie but playing a game. Definitely one of the better attempts at "officially" HPL's mythos-inspired games. Just keep in mind that it's mainly a narrative game, with a few action, puzzle and stealth segments thrown in for variety. There's skill points and a few abilities to level, but this is not the central mechanic of the game. Unfortunately, it seems either the devs were working on a very strict timeline, or the budget for the game wasn't that great. * There is a rather painful amount of reused assets. * The audio levels differ dramatically between in-game dialogue and cutscenes (QA should've caught that). * The game is French, so I assume the original writing was done in that language and then localised, somewhat poorly, in English. Aside from several misspellings (chose/choose, there's/theirs), some dialogue just doesn't flow well and, most importantly, many of the interaction choices are rather poorly worded - on some occasions it's quite impossible to deduce which actions will follow one dialogue choice or another. * At one point, "Iä! Iä!" is voiced as "La! La!". For shame! All in all, a decent HPL movie in form of a videogame.

Deeply sad to report that this is unplayable and made me sick. I love the Lovecraftian Cthulhu mythos themes and collect games in this genre. I loved what I was able to experience of the story and the mysterious New England coastal setting. However, this game makes me physically ill. The frame rate and FOV are horrible and extremely nauseating. If I play for about 30 minutes I feel dizzy, get a bad headache, and feel like I need to throw up. And because the save system is the WORST of any game I've ever seen in my life I can't play long enough to get to the next save point. There are so few and just...why? We've had the technology to save a video game for decades, it's just stupid to design it this way. I tried having my boyfriend play while I watched from further back instead, but that didn't work either. He actually started feeling sick too, which never happened to him before. I've had it happen to me before with a few first person view games, but this was next level disorienting. It doesn't appear to be possible to correct the frame rate or increase the FOV enough to stop this from happening. I really wanted to enjoy this game and get into the story in depth. If a developer reads this, PLEASE consider improving the screen experience. And PLEASE make it possible to save the game. I need to be able to save when I need to, people have busy lives and can't waste hours repeating the same sections. It kills the vibe. I would be happy to try this game again if those changes were made.

Good game graphics are a bit dated but overall a fun game with interesting mechanics 4 endings for game variation. Not a huge scary game though it has its moments. If you enjoy Lovecraft's works while it isn't one of his written story's it keeps the atmosphere and soul of his universe.
Call of Cthulhu – 100% Completion Review
All achievements earned, every clue discovered, all endings unlocked Call of Cthulhu is not a great game, but it is a compelling one — especially when seen through to the end. This is a detective horror adventure set in a rotting fishing village where reality fractures and sanity is a currency you are slowly spending. You play as Edward Pierce, a war veteran turned private investigator, called to unravel a death that quickly spirals into cultism, forbidden knowledge, and mental collapse. It leans more on atmosphere and narrative than mechanics, but that is also where it lands best. Gameplay is light and inconsistent. Stealth sections are clunky. Puzzles range from decent to frustrating. Dialogue choices and skill checks seem impactful early on, though they taper off in the final hours. Still, there is just enough player agency to make your path feel personal. A 100 percent run reveals the game’s branching structure and hidden layers. Multiple endings, missable side paths, and deeply buried lore entries reward careful exploration. Choices around medicine, occultism, and sanity shift key scenes, and seeing all outcomes adds texture that a single playthrough cannot deliver. Visually dated and technically rough, the game survives on its writing, world-building, and sense of creeping dread.
Call of Cthulhu is flawed, but for those willing to dive deep, it becomes strangely memorable. Completion brings clarity, and in a story about madness, that is its own kind of reward.

Holy $**t this game is creepy right out of the gate. I haven't even got a quarter of the way through the plot yet and I'm digging the vibe. I would have logged more time if I just wasn't to busy to play games at the moment. The game play is descent, but that's not why you're playing this game. It's the story and the world, and I think this game captures everything well. Also, it's just flat out pretty.

I love lovecraftian type games , I enjoyed this game but it didn't bring anything new to the table that I hadn't seen in other games. The game is relatively short it follows a detective who goes to an island to solve a mystery about a painter. There's only a few characters you meet that have any real importance and that you have the ability to save. Most of the characters are written not to make it till the end. The few you can save are also the most likeable in the game. Like most of these types of games there is a secret cult and an asylum. There is lore and story to find if you really explore in nooks and cranys. Most of the achievements where pretty easy even getting the different endings. You can just reload right before the end make the opposite choice. The most interesting part is the connection the creature has to the paintings. I would still recommend this game, get it when its on sale.

I struggle with a lot of motion sickness, which bothered me during the game, but then I thought to myself - what if Cthuhlu doesn't want me to finish the ritual and is trying to stop me? The game gained even more in my eyes when I thought about that. The best way to describe it is that it takes every stereotypical Lovecraftian key point, combines them and creates something that LC could definitely write. I can definitely recommend it! (...just wish the enemies were a bit better programmed haha)

for a 2018 game it still holds well in 2025. a game you can easily play 2 or 3 times with different progression. its not perfect by all mean, but you'll wont regret buying this game I only wish that the studio who made this made a similar game on UE5

No yeah its pretty bad. Animations are awful. Game mechanics are wonky. And there are way to many different gameplay ideas that were done. Very cool concept and could have been an amazing game, but it doesn't manage to make it better than a meh

So incredibly tedious for a half second of visual payoff at the end of the story. I have wasted 8 hours of my life. The book was much more entertaining.
