Imagine you're a 12 year old, suddenly in charge of the guard shed at the castle gate, where you decide if elves, goblins and 100+ other characters should be admitted. It's a wonderful combination of deduction, narrative and puzzle games.

Lil stands for Lilith, in case you're wondering. I have no idea how I found this game; and when getting it, I thought to myself "this is either going to be amazing, or utter garbage". And while "amazing" is a bit of a stretch, but it's still a very fun game - unique, and even manages to be funny a few times! Game writers tend to be massive dorks (don't ask me how I know that) whose idea of humour tends to be "reference as much pop culture as possible", and Lil' Guardsman actually relies on more standard understanding of comedy. It works. The whole game's deal is "don't judge a book by its cover" (or do, I'm not your dad), and it very much applies this philosophy to itself. It's not exactly a kid's game. It has the aesthetic of one, but it relies on some rather mature emotional reasoning, has occasional swearing (with excellent comedic timing, mind), and is very, very political. Both in the "it discusses the nature of power" sense and "it deals with issues which have direct analogies in our world" sense. Then again, this is a game where you play as a little girl, if you're a... person that has issues with "politics" in games, I'm very surprised you're even reading this. Moving on. There's some resource management involved in the game - it's very obviously inspired by Papers, Please, but the gameplay is actually much different. You have a lot of ways of determining whether you should let someone in or not. Tools that require finite resources, phone calls, or just talking and being clever with your tone and answers. Plenty of choice without making you feel overwhelmed. The tone of the game is much more upbeat, too. The fact that you have a fancy timey-wimey tool to tactically go back in time helps reduce the tension - save scumming as a gameplay mechanic, why not? But this game is not all just bingchill; you're still dealing with serious stuff that has serious consequences - some more serious than others. [strike]Seriously. [/strike] There is an issue with pacing - some parts drag on a little. There's also sooo many characters, and you kinda want to have some kind of rapport with all of them, but this becomes harder later on, where you're really flooded with events and whatnot. I'd also argue that its politics are a little flat; there isn't much nuance. Which, eh, is fine. You're a 12-year-old, who already is wise very much beyond her years. In the end, the story still manages to be gripping and there are some hidden depths to the characters that really come out of nowhere (in a good way). Also, the game is clearly made with replaying and trying different stuff in mind, but I actually got the best ending on my first playthrough and I don't think I'll be going back; but I'm not a huge fan of replaying games, so that's just fine by me. If you like exploring all sorts of "what if" scenarios, this game's got you covered. Look, it's alright. It won't shake the foundations of your world, but you'll smile - maybe even laugh! and generally have a nice time. I recommend playing one day ("level") a time, for better pacing. It cool. Demon guy is mad at us. Prince gives 12 year old alcohol. Father abandons little girl. Great.

It's a cozy story-based game with solid voice acting and an interesting world. Lil' Guardsmen is a neat mix of medieval-style fantasy and modern and it plays similarly to what I've seen about Papers Please and That's Not My Neighbor while keeping a choice-based adventure element.

Graphics are AWESOME! The music is super catchy, the voice acting is really fun too! The only thing that's confusing is how to get 3/4 stars. I feel like I make really good choices but something that shouldn't be an issue gets me dinged each time. Nonetheless- loving this game and hope there is a sequel!

Who knew that guarding a castle gate could be such a high-stakes job — especially when you’re a 12-year-old kid with a bullwhip and more paperwork than a medieval accountant? In Lil’ Guardsman, you’re Lil, the unlikely hero tasked with deciding who gets in and who gets tossed out like last week’s leftovers. Spoiler: some of those leftovers are goblins, elves, and cyclopes who think rules don’t apply to them. Armed with a scanner that’s basically medieval airport security and a whip that says, “I’m serious, don’t test me,” you’ll interrogate a parade of suspicious characters. It’s like Papers, Please but with more fantasy and way cuter art — and honestly, probably more sass from a tween than any customs officer I know. Every decision feels like playing a game of “Who’s Lying?” with a cast of colorful personalities, and trust me, the drama gets real when you deny entry to a crying elf or try to explain your job to a cyclops with one eye rolling so hard it’s practically gone full circle. The hand-drawn art is adorable enough to make you smile, even when you’re basically running a gate-keeping dictatorship, and the soundtrack? Think medieval synth pop meets “boss battle with paperwork.” If you’ve got a knack for detective work, a tolerance for fantasy chaos, and want to see what happens when a kid handles the kingdom’s front door, Lil’ Guardsman is your jam. Just don’t mess with Lil cause she’s got a bullwhip and she’s not afraid to use it.

I've been wanting to play this game since it was announced and played by my fave Youtuber. I finally got the time to sit through everything and play! This one's the best! The game is voiced so nicely and surprisingly, I let them finish (I just usually speed up the text boxes before the character finishes speaking). Now I'd have to leave this game for a while until I forget it and play it again on the future <3

Absolutely peak. Animations? Simplistic. Does that matter? Hell nah. Dialogue? Peak. In my real life do I find 12yo's swearing jading and overplayed as a trope in television? Ever since the 'Butterfly Effect' with Ashton Kutcher. With Lil'? Absolutely not. Only character named 'Lilith' I've ever actually liked in fiction. Better than that one poetic line in the King James Bible, then in Supernatural, and in every trans person's Sonic fanfictions. Hot damn... Actually fun. Even if the outcomes are arguably formulaic and simplistic in some areas--hey, not everyone can be peak Telltale. Even peak Telltale had 'Life is Strange' end with a binary ending, at least this one gives multiple endings. Likeable multiple endings. You act on uncertainty, but enjoy the ride. At least death isn't death. To be honest, it's kinda a free re-roll with the Chronometer. Huh... You thought you would tease the person taming the dragon, not the dragon itself... Oh wait, is that a spoiler? Meh... MEH... The fact the entire thing is voice acted is great. Reminds me a bit of Potionomics. Oh! I got Lil' to drink mead... THAT'S RIGHT! Your MC can drink alcohol (off screen). Why would you do that? Who knows... Life is full of questionable choices and youth making dumb decisions enforced by the invisible hand of your own machinations. I actually enjoyed this game and I've only been playing for 4 hours... I need to add more to it. Oh, also, the references were for the most part enjoyable. Though wasn't the 'Weekend at Bernie's' one a bit explicit? Oh who am I kidding... so many are basically meta commentary if you aren't <25yo. I want more. Any chance on a sequel? It's like 'Paper's Please' but with p'nash, y'know?!
