When I saw this was coming out, it went to the top of the want list. At the time I purchased it, there were already a couple of negative reviews. I took a chance.
The ideal behind the route is good. Different people play this game in different ways. If you like getting into an engine and driving nonstop for an hour at high speed, this route won’t be for you. If you like shunting and short trip working this will be of interest. Yes, the overall route is short, but there is plenty to do with many of the included scenarios being in excess of an hour.
Others have commented on the use of the old European asset pack. Driving on the main route, you don’t really notice this. The route is set in a bleak, misty, rural industrial landscape and in the main looks fine. However there are a couple of areas that appear to completely unfinished. The class 37 scenario instructs you to pick up some fuel wagons at a fuel depot. The fuel depot consists of a grey ground texture and 2 small fuel tanks, No other industrial equipment, pipes or valves, no buildings, workers, fence or vehicles. It looks really poor.
With regards to the scenarios, the class 20 ones loads with a track.bin error that you can F2 past and seems to run ok. However the major flaw, given that this route is supposed to be about coal operations is that not one scenario contains a load or unload instruction. Following the instructions having driven from point A to B and carefully reversing through a yard, only to then be told to drive out again, You are halfway to the next destination and way ahead of time, before you realise you were meant to load your wagons.
The shunter, better than I could do!, but for a payware product it’s really bad. If you are buying this DLC for the shunter, DON’T! The external textures are poor and the internal view is nonexistent, apart from the most basic controls, which you cannot even operate with the mouse. It would have been poor quality 10 years during the railworks days!
There’s an old saying sometimes less is more, why this was ever included I don’t know. A class 08 or 03 would have been better. I appreciate this is third party content but somebody at Dovetail should have really stopped this being included. It does the DLC or the game no favours
I’ve had fun playing this DLC, but I can’t recommend it. If you are reading this in five years time and you can pick it up in a sale for a few pounds then you have nothing to lose, but at fully price, sorry there is just too much wrong.
