⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ American Truck Simulator Helped Me Pass My CDL Exam!
I want to personally thank the developers for creating a game that’s not only fun but surprisingly educational. I’ve been playing American Truck Simulator for over 300 hours, and I can honestly say it played a major role in helping me pass my CDL driving exam.
This game taught me how to use my mirrors effectively, how to back up a trailer, and how to maneuver tight turns and curbs — all the kinds of real-world skills you need as a truck driver. The attention to detail, realistic physics, and the immersive experience truly helped train my eyes and mind for what it’s like behind the wheel of a big rig.
I also want to give a shoutout to the support team — I recently had a technical issue, and I’ve already reached out because I truly miss playing this game. It’s that meaningful to me.
If you’re even remotely interested in trucking or getting your CDL, or if you just want an incredibly satisfying and peaceful simulator experience, this game is worth every penny.
Thanks again, SCS Software — this isn’t just a game, it’s a tool that helped me launch a real career.

This is a very good game. I wish that the developers would allow you to stop off the side and get rest in your truck if you have a sleeper. I play Alaskan Road Truckers on my PS5 and it allows you to stop off and get rest where ever you are. I would love to see this change in this game

I slept on this game hard core, I got it when it first came out, played it for like 3 hours and stopped. I just redownloaded it yesterday and man its definitely a solid game. Very fun with a wheel and $44 Ryanstar Truck shifter from Amazon! The workshop puts it over the top, just bought all the DLC today. They deserve the money.

At first glance, American Truck Simulator might seem like an unlikely hit—a driving sim where your main objective is to haul cargo across vast stretches of highway. But beneath its unassuming hood lies a surprisingly deep, meditative experience that has captured the hearts of simulation fans worldwide.
Developed by SCS Software, American Truck Simulator delivers a detailed and lovingly crafted slice of Americana, letting you explore iconic U.S. landscapes through the cab of meticulously modeled trucks. It’s less about speed and thrills and more about rhythm, patience, and the subtle joys of the open road.
Driving in ATS is immersive and satisfying. The trucks handle with impressive realism—each rig’s weight, acceleration, and braking feel authentic. Managing fuel, fatigue, and cargo safety adds layers of strategy to your journey.
The core gameplay loop is straightforward: pick up jobs, plan your route, and navigate highways, interstates, and small-town streets while obeying traffic laws. Simple, but far from boring. Weather changes, day-night cycles, and varied traffic keep every trip unique.
One of the game’s biggest draws is its expansive and detailed map. Starting with California and gradually unlocking neighboring states like Nevada and Arizona (with DLC expansions), ATS offers a rich, ever-growing playground.
Roads, rest stops, landmarks, and towns are all carefully recreated, offering a strong sense of place. For many players, just cruising through deserts, forests, and mountain passes becomes a relaxing escape—a virtual road trip that feels surprisingly real.
Visually, American Truck Simulator balances realism with artistic charm. Lighting and weather effects are atmospheric, especially during sunsets or rainstorms. Interior truck details and the vast landscapes contribute to immersion.
Sound design is a standout: engine noises, tire sounds, and ambient highway hums create a soothing soundscape. Radio stations and podcasts add personality to long hauls, making those hours behind the wheel fly by.
Progression is steady and rewarding. You start as a hired driver, but as you earn money, you can buy your own trucks, customize them with dozens of parts, and eventually build a trucking empire with multiple vehicles and hired drivers.
Customization is deep—everything from engine upgrades to paint jobs and interior accessories lets you personalize your fleet. It’s a satisfying blend of management and simulation.
While primarily a solo experience, ATS also supports multiplayer mods like TruckersMP, letting you convoy with friends and other players in real time. The community is passionate, often sharing custom mods, realistic maps, and truck skins that enhance the game.
American Truck Simulator isn’t for everyone—it’s a game that rewards patience and a slower pace. But for those willing to embrace its unique rhythm, it offers a deeply satisfying, oddly therapeutic experience.
It’s a celebration of the open road, Americana, and the quiet dignity of the trucking lifestyle. Whether you’re a simulation veteran or just looking for a chill way to unwind, ATS is a surprisingly engaging journey worth taking—mile by mile.

I bought this game on sale after playing ETS 2 for several months, it's a fine game, just like ETS. But one thing I don't like is that it's not really American Truck Simulator, without DLC it's just California Truck Simulator. And even with DLC you can't get past the Mississippi river to the east coast.
🚚 American Truck Simulator – Review
You wouldn’t think hauling frozen vegetables through Nevada would be relaxing, but American Truck Simulator pulls it off—and then some. It’s the ultimate chill game in disguise, where you trade headshots and loot for shifting gears, obeying traffic laws, and admiring sunsets on I-80.
And somehow… it rules.

Strengths

Deeply relaxing gameplay – At its core, ATS is a zen experience. Cruise down highways, listen to radio chatter or a podcast, and slowly build your trucking empire. It’s gaming therapy.

Immersive driving feel – Even with just a mouse and keyboard, the trucks feel weighty and convincing. But pair it with a wheel, pedals, and a good chair, and it becomes a full-blown simulator. Every gear shift, turn, and trailer load feels meaningful.

Authentic US atmosphere – The environments are stylized but recognizable. Rolling plains, city outskirts, desert roads—all rendered with love. And the sense of scale while crossing states is oddly satisfying.

Modding community is massive – Real trucks, weather systems, maps, and even fast food chains—the modding scene turns ATS into a playground for realism junkies.

Progression system is sneaky-addictive – Leveling up, buying garages, managing AI drivers… it's low-key a tycoon game, hidden under the hood of a highway cruiser.

Regular updates & DLC – New states, new trucks, and steady improvements keep the game growing. SCS Software may not be fast, but they’re consistent and player-focused.

Weaknesses

It’s a slow burn – If you’re looking for action, explosions, or twitch reactions… you’re about 1,000 miles off course. This is about patience, not thrills.

Base map is small – The original states (California, Nevada, Arizona) feel tiny compared to the more recent DLCs. To get the full experience, you’ll need to invest in expansions.

AI traffic is still kinda dumb – Cars brake-checking you for no reason or merging like maniacs is still a thing. It’s improved, but not perfect.

Visuals are starting to age – While still charming and detailed, some textures and lighting effects can feel a little 2016-ish, especially compared to newer sims.

Overall Impression
American Truck Simulator isn’t for everyone—but if it clicks with you, it clicks hard. There’s something uniquely rewarding about mastering a big rig, hauling freight through the Rockies, and watching your small company grow mile by mile. It’s not a power fantasy—it’s a peace fantasy.
Whether you play for the sim side, the business management, or just the sheer relaxing rhythm of the open road, ATS delivers something quietly special.

Score: 8.6 / 10
Tranquil, detailed, and surprisingly addictive. American Truck Simulator turns long-haul driving into one of gaming’s most unexpectedly satisfying journeys.

I can certainly see the appeal, but this game is not for me. I have no interest in buying a steering wheel to play, and the keyboard steering is laughable, and the mouse steering not much more fun. Not the soothing driving experience I was looking for - I had to keep relaxing my jaw I was so tense while playing. Super in depth, lots of features, just too much for me.

This game was worth the buy for when I bought it. I bought it during the summer sale for only $4.99, I have been playing nonstop ever since I bought, Thinking of buying some DLC. And if you like roleplaying games, talking to people, or just maybe doing. Something that you might want to try in the future for your job, then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS GAME, It gets you into the real kinda life style of trucking!

this is a game for real beefy men who like real beefy trucks brother. pay off your crippling debt and install mods like real life advertising to make the dystopia complete, jabroni. you're either in debt in real life or you're going to be if you're reading this, so why not play a game where the American dream is actually possible since you're probably gonna die owning nothing like the rest of us?
drive through real life recreations of American cities with real life McDonald's billboards in your face every five seconds. it's genuinely impressive how accurate the developers made driving feel in this Cyberpunk hellscape of a continent.
experience extremely realistic traffic flow that accurately simulates how low the average American's IQ is, and all jokes aside the vehicle handling model is 10/10 and works with any wheel or controller under the sun. I use controller, it isn't good enough for some people and it isn't perfect but it's great for me and all I need to enjoy the game
this is a masterpiece.
my only complaint is that the cities are WAY too clean and tidy looking. we need mods that add mountains of mcdonald's fountain cups and discarded fent needles all over the place, also a mod to get a gun to shoot the police when they ticket me for going 20 over the speed limit. maybe a mod to get lot lizards and smoke cigarettes, too. we also need the option to order uber eats pickup and survive purely off of that while our character fights off the inevitable heart attack from sitting down for 24 hours a day. there's a few things this simulator could add that would really heighten the experience. I really want to feel like an American, but my truck doesn't have a gun rack in it.

I confess to having a bit of a giggle at these games in the past or at least never considered them my type of experience. Well here I'm am, middle aged, and having gone out on a limb during the Steam sale after reading numerous glowing reviews, I am now the very happy (and gloriously addicted) new owner of a G29 force feedback wheel, Euro Truck Simulator 2 + France DLC, American Truck Simulator + Utah and Colorado DLC and of course numerous fantastic mods. I couldn't get VR to work (downloaded the beta, tried VD, Quest Link, Steam VR, with/without mods etc - no dice) but I actually like playing on a cinema sized flat screen with a headset.
As someone who grew up in the UK and has traveled many a European road network and now living in the US having driven through at least 34 states, this simulation is relaxing, cathartic and nostalgic. I'll be adding more DLC when my wife allows it. Happy trucking y'all!

This game made me understand my uncle who listens to Hank Williams and yells at traffic lights.
Yo, let me tell you something...
American Truck Simulator ain't just a game — it's a spiritual awakening on 18 wheels.
First time I booted it up, I was like “Pfft... how fun could it be driving a truck in silence across Utah?”
Two hours later I’m hauling 40,000 lbs of frozen chicken through a snowstorm while crying to a Kenny Rogers deep cut and yelling “TEN-FOUR, BABY!” at my cat like she’s dispatch.
🚛 The gameplay?
Pure therapy.
You just pick a route, hit the road, and vibe.
No one’s trying to kill you.
Nobody’s calling you slurs in the lobby.
Just you, the open road, and the gentle hum of diesel-fueled serenity.
And don’t even get me started on the mods.
You can soup up your truck so much it looks like it came outta Fast & the Furious: Freightliner Drift.
Or make your GPS talk like Snoop Dogg.
I once delivered a load of cheese while my truck was covered in anime decals and blasting Creed.
Felt patriotic somehow.
🎵 Bonus points for letting me play my own music.
Last week I took a midnight job from Reno to Elko while listening to Joe Rogan and eating trail mix straight from the bag.
It was... transcendent.
I became one with the highway.
I saw God in a Loves truck stop restroom.
💸 And the best part?
The grind don’t feel like work.
You ain’t farming or sweating — you’re building an empire.
You start out broke in a rented rig, and next thing you know, you got a fleet of drivers with names like “Carl” and “Susan” out there makin’ cheddar while you sit back and sip kombucha from the cab of a Peterbilt.
Final Verdict:
This game didn’t just scratch an itch —
It delivered a whole damn pallet of inner peace.
10/10
Would drop a load and my emotional baggage in Bakersfield again.

Loads of fun and you'll lose a couple of hours when you just wanted to do a quick run. Attention to detail of the roadside features are outstanding. The little bits like the armco designs and small marker signs, speed humps, on road markings really add to the immersion. Very fun all around.

For some reason this incredible, relaxing game has had achievements added for completing driving academy... which requires incredibly precise driving in scenarios most of which have nothing to do with what you actually do in the game, ignoring the minor bugs which are no problem in actual gameplay, but which make you fail scenarios over and over. Not forgetting the fact that it is actually impossible to have the same sort of spacial awareness in a game as you have in real life. I am stupid enough to try and get my 100% completion back, I got 3 stars on 12 of the scenarios in driving academy part 2, and it's complete chance, it has nothing to do with your actual skill. I tried switching to keyboard and mouse, and it made no difference. Typing this out is really difficult because after staring at a screen for an hour trying to pick out the details in the mirror my eyes aren't focusing properly. And no, my graphics are all maximum settings.
And after trying to complete one scenario for three hours, I actually had nightmares.
I imagined that it would be completeable because part 1 was, albeit not actually fun.
Why would anyone make driving academy, much less release it IN A GAME WHICH IS OTHERWISE GOOD. I seriously need to stop giving them money.

I bought this on sale knowing very little about it. This has been a lovely low energy "game" driving trucks around and exploring the US west coast. Throw on a baseball game and drag some farm equipment across California. Three states included in the base game and the scenery is pretty amazing despite ~10 year old graphics. Cheapest way possible to have some wanderlust. As you level up you gain garages, employees, and trucks which ramps up the income rate.
My biggest complaint is the jarring texture loading as vehicles get closer. A rough shaped vehicle suddenly pops to a detailed vehicle and after 120 hours of playtime it still grabs my attention for no good reason. I also feel like turning right on red is buggy and I had to turn police tickets off. I'll watch a bot truck in front of me stop at red, then turn right. I do the exact same thing and get a ticket.
Definitely worth throwing on the wishlist.

Just a great game. I play without mods but there is a large mod community and also a large community geared at virtual truck companies is playing solo isnt your thing. I find myself playing to listen to the radio, the ingame radio functions are amazing and you can mod if desired to add your own music. For myself vanilla game play and just cruising exploring and jamming out tunes has been all I need. I recommend all the map dlc as it adds so much driving content and the newer states look and feel so much better. Recommend starting outside the original 2 or 3 states as they definitely dont feel as good as the more recent. And with multiple states on the way soon they are still breathing life into game. Steam sales drop dlc to 50-60% off.

Fun game, can get repetitive but i guess if your a trucker in real life your use to that dead end repetitive job where you just drive and stare at the road all day for countless hours, should make it to where you can get out of your vehicle to take pics and stuff and sight seeing areas, would be pretty cool.

this game is soo good, you can get so many cool dlcs just by subscribing to other ppl, i love it with all my heart. the reason i started playing this game was to distract me from the mess of my life...(my dog died) and slowly but surely it helped, helped me get my life together. helped me so much that today, im getting 80% avg on my report and it just distracts me. theres tons of other people that spoke to me about my dog in-game. they have so many features, like i cant find another game where u can speak to ppl that make it sound like your really in a truck irl. like "beep -good moring guys, im going from las vegas to tucson, anyone wanna join me on my cruize?- over - bzzzp". i just love this game, it reminds me of my childhood. when i was 4 - 12 i LOVED trucks. my dad was a truck seller. and car seller and bus seller. he owned a big dealership in south africa. so everytime i saw a truck i told him and he would be like. "ohh, do u know what truck that is?? its a mack anthem!" i love trucks---
sorry for over sharing. have a good day.

I’ve been behind the wheel for close to 30 years now, hauling everything from reefer loads outta Laredo to flatbeds full of steel up through the Rockies. Figured I’d give this American Truck Simulator a try after hearing about it from a buddy at the truck stop—and let me tell you, 21 hours later and I’m still hooked like it’s my first day on the road.
This game is the real deal. From the whine of the Jake brake to the way the sun hits the windshield rollin' through Arizona, it’s damn near therapeutic. I sit back with a cold Busch Lite in hand, Newport 100 hangin’ off my lip, and let the miles melt away like I’m back on I-80 at dawn.
The realism is what blows my mind. Shifting gears, weigh stations, tight docks—you gotta know your stuff or you'll be jackknifed in no time. It ain’t just a game, it’s a lifestyle simulator. The devs nailed the feeling of being out there on the open road.
If you're curious about trucking or always wondered what it's like to run loads cross-country, this is a fantastic way to dip your toes in. No logbooks, no DOT breathing down your neck, just pure diesel-powered freedom.
Highly recommend to anyone who respects the grind and loves the open road.
