First of all, there are a lot of people who make this look worse than it is, so please let me explain this! Pros: + this DLC comes with about 10 new ships + you can download really huge amount of ships from Workshop and almost all of them are usable and they also come with missions if those missions from native ships are not enough for you + you can make your own ship with certain restrictions Cons: - you're kinda forced into doing those missions even though you'd prefer to go straight into the game and just play with any ship you choose - some missions are really stupid or boring Either pro or con, it depends on your point of view: ~ Shadow Operation missions.. You basically have to complete certain missions in order to unlock ships.. Someone likes this, someone hates this, it really depends.. (missions example: Kill 10 Twin Bosses; Kill 300 Scouts; etc.) TL;DR: 7/10 - Awesome DLC if you want to play with different ships and if you have a bit of spare time to do missions.

About this DLC. I've played many hours of Beat Hazard and definately enough to think that the ideas this DLC are offering are very interesting. The mechanics are put there and something that I was missing for this game was a kind of variety in terms of ships and missions. And that's basically what this DLC adds: 9 ships with 3 missions available for all of them. But now you'll ask... why am I thumbing it down? There are 2 main reasons, and each applies to both new features. First of all, I was kinda disappointed that almost all ships are BAD. I mean, none of them is better than the original one, so what's the point? At least that's how I felt about it. Good think you can customize your own ship 'cause otherwise I'd end up by using the same ship I've been playing with the last 30h of gaming. Secondly, ALL missions are farmed-based. Now that sucks A LOT. Some missions were like "accumulate 50 million points" 'n' stuff. I agree about the Death Penalty they had since it made it more challenging, but there's no point either if the missions are meant to do the same and not, for instance, some specific thing in an specific song. In the end this game has its own soundtrack, they could've squeezed it more since it's a good one. I don't know guys. I bought this DLC kinda hyped (from all music-synth games, this is by far my favorite one) but the result wasn't what I expected. However I wouldn't mind buying another DLC if they make it at least interesting, or fun to play, not just "the same thing you were doing before".

I bought this DLC primarily for the ship creator. Being able to create your own ships and share them on the steam workshop sounded great. Unfortunately, you need to level up your shadow rank in order to get "customization points". This means you have to accomplish some very unreasonable goals like completing 3 songs on insane difficulty and if you die your progress is reset. All of the "missions" penalize you when you die, often very drastically. The shadow missions and ship creator shouldn't be tied to each other. People that enjoy creating new stuff aren't always the top players of said game and vice versa. Ship creator honestly should be part of the base game and not locked behind DLC. Additionally you can't use the community-made ships unless you own the DLC.

This DLC is amazing! It adds a bunch of new ships (and workshop integration, so there are hundreds of extras) and many new game perks. Each ship has it's own "missions" which are basically mini-challenges to attempt while playing the game. You may have to kill X number of scouts, score 4 million points on one song, or beat 3 songs on Insane difficulty. Each time you beat a challenge your ship ranks up and your profile ranks up too. Win challenges to unlock more powerful ships. Each ship has it's own perks. You can try different ships based on your own play style. Some ships are very fast with a focused beam, some are larger and fill the screen with bullets, some auto-aim. There is a lot of content here. This is a great add on and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Beat Hazard.

The good : - 9 new ships, not just visually but gameplay wise too. The bad : - You can't access anything from workshop if you don't buy this DLC. That's right, you need to pay to be able to access workshop items. - Contains " missions " that are basically in-game challenges. Nothing new to see, no new levels or enemies. Just challenges. - You need to buy this DLC if you want to 100% complete Beat Hazard. There are achievements that are only unlockable through this DLC. - Costs almost as much as the base game. Here's a tip : Merge the DLC's with the main game.

Beat Hazard is great. Problem is I only got this dlc for the custom community made ships. (which one shouldnt have to pay to be able to use to begin with but whatever) Only to find out you can't even use most ships until you've beaten challenges. I really like this game, but I am by no means a fanatic of this genre, so of the 20 or so custom ships I downloaded, I can only use 3. This is because many of the challenges to rank up are ridiculous. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't all make you lose all progress upon dying. And I don't mean game over, I mean you lose one life, and all progress resets. Now I'm sure there are some freaks out there who an beat a 4 min song on insane difficulty without dying one time, but I sure as f*ck can't, and don't like being denied content because of it. So if you are considering getting this just to have fun trying out different ships, don't. Because you can't.

If you already like the game and you want to add some extra replay value to it, you can't go wrong with this. Buying this gives you access to workshop ships and 'shadow missions', which are special missions that are assigned to each ship. Making a workshop ship yourself is quite easy, though these new ships might take some getting used to. There's some ships that are purposely hard to use (extremely fast, slidey, or god help you if it has auto-aim). It can be fun to try and make a difficult ship work, but it can be very frustrating depending on the mission. Every mission has a punishment if you lose your ship once, ranging from "lose tiny bit of progress" to "lose ALL progress", meaning at some point or another, you'll have to get through difficult tracks without dying. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but some ships are REALLY difficult to not randomly smack into something. It can get quite challenging, but if you're down for it, or just want to make some dumb ships for yourself, it's worth getting. (Just be aware that you'll have to beat some missions to gain access to the more powerful ships)

This DLC adds more ships to play with and they can make the game easier or harder, depends on how good you are with that/those ship(s) Also, you will shout out "FUUUUUU" furiously because you will lost your progress when you died 10/10 <Insert "Buy our game!" jokes>

The Shadow Operations Unit DLC for Beat Hazard adds several new ships to choose from, each with their own strenghts and weaknesses. It also adds a new Shadow Ops mechanic (hence the name), in which you have to complete missions for each ship in order to earn stars and increase your Shadow Ops rank. The missions go from simple stuff like killing a certain enemy a certain number of times, to stuff like finishing a track on the hardest difficulty with no deaths. This DLC also includes an ingame editor so you can create your own ships and upload them to the Workshop, by adjusting their stats like firing and movement speed, size, and so on. The only issue I'd have with it is that you have to choose a file from your computer for the ship's appearance (otherwise it'll be a default red ship with the word "TEST" written on it); I think it'd have been better if it had an easy to use ship editor, where you could select parts and attachments. All in all, I think this is a pretty good DLC. The Shadow Ops missions are a great way to spice up the game. I recommend it.

Great addition to base game. New ships requires different styles of flying and some can suit you more and some less.

Pros: The missions add so much to the base game in replayability Different ships cater to different play-styles Steam Workshop integration means you can add 100's more ships. Cons: Some ships are balanced poorly. Overall: 9/10- Makes the original game feel shallow (when its not) in comparison to all this adds

--- For the (quite simple & easy to use) ship editor alone this patch / DLCs is well worth it! ---

When you are trying out the new ships, try not to look at them as 'better' or 'worse' that the standard ship. They are by turns quirky (the micro ship dances around the screen like an over-caffeinated child) to downright weird (the auto-targetting ship feels crazy!). They are certainly challenge modes, and some of the challenges are going to take me hours of effort to get, I think. Chaining multiple Insane level tracks without dying will be an interesting one for sure! I made a very quick and shallow effort at building my own Shadow Ops ship, which was an interesting experience. I will certainly be taking a look at what madness other people have created! I can see all kinds of oddities emerging as people play around more with this.

For anyone who's gotten bored of the base game and wants new challenges, this DLC is for you! In short, it offers several new ships, each with their own missions to complete. Completing these increases your Shadow Rank - the highest one being Shadow Elite - and they range from easy to incredibly frustrating. Depending on your skill level, that sentiment may hold less true for you; that was just my personal experience after playing the game for over 100 hours. The only catch? I'd rather not spoil it...overall, this DLC is worth the price(and you can often get it for much cheaper when it goes on sale).

I enjoy the new ships and missions. There is also a ship creator which I have not used much yet but the rest of the dlc is nice. Buy it in the bundle with the main game when it is on sale the ultra dlc makes it more worthwhile because it is better and adds more. This is just a nice bonus.

I used to love this game. Could play hours long sessions of the "normal" game. All good & fun & as i saw that there was a DLC wich allowed custom ships & stuff..Well i was all excited. But what a dissapiontment i got, hiding custom ships & other good stuff behind a leveling system.... Just why? Why hide ships behind a "Shadow Wall" of stars & perks?? Well after that dissapointment i just cannot recommend this anymore.....Sorry

This game is probably one of the best games if you are looking for something to play and just relax but along with that its also one of the hardest games out there 10/10 will play again

Good but not great excuse to boot up the base game. The collector ships and Mosquito give the game a new feel and there's a plethora of achievements and objectives that give the game an RPG element. Creating ships isn't that intriguing but it's a nice added bonus rather than a selling point.

Very enjoyable add-on to the base game. You now have objectives while playing, a nice little challenge. Cunning use of the steam badges (=certain ships available).

This DLC is really recommended to use. If you want something extra !! If you want to use new ships, then buy this DLC to try it out. If it's on sale, then you should buy it, because then it would be cheaper. So, the thing is, that this pack is amazing and puts more to access the game. If you get the DLC, it will pop up the screen that you are welcomed to Shadow Operations Unit! And if you play with the DLC, you will get some challenge on the pack. Like you CANT die, if you don't get the challenge done. Example like... if it's on 50% and you die, it will start over the progress. Then you need to do it again! And it's painful! But extra fun! And this is interesting! You can make your OWN ship too! But anyways, every ship will have own challenges, but sometimes easy ones and hard ones. --- So, if you want new ships and challenge for game, then you should buy this DLC. <3 But i love this DLC ! That's why i love Beat Hazard and musics too!

Just like this, thank you Rokk: "This DLC comes with quite a few cool things. Cool new ships, the ability to make your own ships, and workshop support. Only problem is that you need to grind completely pointless "challenges" to actually unlock the DLC that you paid money for. [..] Do yourself a favor and skip this DLC. I didn't pay €4,50 just to get a huge chunk of locked content. [...]"

Unless you want thrown controllers, broken controllers, or broken screens for that matter, I strongly don't recommend getting this DLC. What kind of tasks do they put in here, like "finish a track on Suicidal" or "get 10 million points without dying", it's completely bogus!

As many people have said before me, I loved Beat Hazard. Still do. It took me a bit to figure out why the community ships I was subscribing to weren't showing up - oh, right, I have to get a DLC to unlock the custom ships. So I'm being charged for fan-made content? Hmm... I sucked it up and bought the DLC. Hey, the base game was good. Booted the game up with fresh DLC, looked for the ships I had downloaded... found them locked. The fact that you're forced to complete these challenge missions in order to access the community content is just garbage, and for me, makes this DLC (which, if we're honest, is really just unlocking the ability to make/use custom ships) a total waste of money. Maybe some day Cold Beam will do their loyal customers a favor and remove the "must play challenge missions" restriction from the DLC.

Shadow Operations Unit with an Eagle symbol. Well, that means you either have a lot of money, or you are actually pretty good. If you're not an average gamer, I wouldn't recommend you to buy it, unless you have a lot of money to spend. Beat Hazard- Shadow Opersations Unit Rating: 10/10 - "Still too good for 200% Suicidal Mode"

I think this dlc should have been a part of a free update, but for 5$ is can't really complain, it makes the game even more customizable, which is good, and really over all just makes it funner to play.

Eh, it's alright. It adds some replayability, and some of the challenges are fun (I just wish they wouldn't reset EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME YOU DIE. That gets annoying, fast.). For 5 dollars, you can't go wrong, and for a dollar on sale, why not pick it up? My only real gripe with it is that the supposed mod support is locked behind 'skill' walls. I would love to tell you how all the silly mods work, but I can't because I haven't put 5 hours into this mod yet.

During a mission if you die even once you lose all progress for that mission and have to start again. Why do you have to do the missions? to get access to the ships you payed money for.

Most of the content you think you've bought is locked, and most missions are a frustrating grindfest where you lose a good chunk of progress (if not all) when you die. And you will die. A lot. Stick with the base game and avoid this DLC.

I rate this add-on 4.5/5 Excellent. If you want to play Beat Hazard at all, you should absolutely get this add-on. This add-on takes an agint and somewhat boring game and greatly enhances it, adding bonus missions to greatly increase replability and give you some sort of definite goal while you play this firework-infused game and listen to your music at the same time. I don't think I would have played Beat Hazard nearly as much as I have if I did not have this add-on. I make use of it every single time I play Beat Hazard. Indeed, me playing Beat Hazard effectively revolves around the features which this add-on gives you access to and I can barely remember what Beat Hazard is like without The Shadow Operations Unit which goes with it.
