Pros:
I am a very slow player. I was over a hundred hours into my first play/through when SotE first came out and I had an absolute blast. Nearly all of the new weapon-types feel amazing, creative (dueling shield, backhand blades, great-katana, light great-sword, martial arts, beast claws). The additions to existing weapon types are also very fun to use. The bosses are more batshit crazy and scenic than ever, the new enemies are meaningfully difficult and the scenery is truly stunning. I love the changes of the sky-colour ever so often. The story and npc quests were at their most compelling yet. I believe that in many ways this dlc may be the best one Fromsoftware has ever made. However there are quite a few cons.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cons (with light spoilers):
Some areas did feel empty or long. Enemy variety could also be spiced up. One more Messmer soldier type could ad so much more variety. The main game has 3 main soldier types. Sword/warpick with shield or lantern, spear with greatshield and greatsword. The Mesmer soldiers are all strengh focussed warriors, so a great-axe wielding Mesmer soldier who shows a little more barbarian environmental story telling could have been very easy to implement. Another example to spice things up would be to give some soldiers smith-script weapons, the swift spear or that Mesmer fire flail. Every camp would then be a bit of a mystery, because you would have to ascertain what kind of weapon the soldier is wielding. Could that sxe beat you up or end up in your face from ten meters away?
Belurat and the rest of the hornsent could have also had more additions. I know of the many variety of shades. Mesmerfire-shades, Rauh-shades, Frenzy-shades and non-horned shades, but I would have liked to see more than just shades (and dogs). The inquisitors are a cool enemy with their buffs and heals, but there is a massive gaps between shades, inquisitors, Ascetics and the horned warriors/the elemental bros.
And the Abyssal woods has what is probably the most tightly connected mini legacy dungeon yet, but the enemy variety there is the worst in the game. Some people like the fact that the area is quiet and empty with those untouchables, but THE RATS WITH THEIR LOUD JORKING NOISES RUINS EVERYTHING!!! They are not fun to fight, they are loud as fuck and really dissapointing, because they are the only madness enemy next to the trols and a few soldiers in Gelmir (the villagers hardly count). The other frenzied wildlife could have made some really cool enemies. They don't even need a lot of new animations. Just make them frenzy spellcasters who use some of the like six different spells frenzy has. Maybe inquisitor seals could have also been some cool hazard. I will say though that Jori Elder Inquisitor is a cool boss. It has the same style as some entries in Vaatividya's Elden Ring boss art competition. A boss who uses player mechanics (spirit-summoning), guards horrors both beyond and within human comprehension and a less head on way of combat (teleporting away and loads of spellcasting).
Bayle's dragon peak could have used more variation in dragons. I find that the ghost-flame and fire-lightning drakes are mechanically a lot better than the main game ones. Mainly due to their mid range jumps and movements. Usually a drake has short range movement or they fly to the other side of the arena. You then use Torrent to gallop towards the drake. After the first two times this becomes very boring and tedious. These special dragons have another movement option which makes their cowardly (and time consuming) flight rarer. They also tend to jump back into the fray after their new attacks. The ghost-flame dragon's chest gas aoe is also a better telegraph than the usual downward breath attack aoe when you are underneath the drake. I just wish that there were more varied drake types who looked more visually different. Bayle (and Placidussax) are an amazing case of this. Next to his cool ruined look, he really stands out next to the drakes and ancient dragons. Some more fir-lightning spells would have been cool too. Add a bigger war between the Dragon-lord loyalists and a few new traitor beast-men and drake knights who could tell a bigger story with ancient dragon Ballsax. All of this could happen and you could still keep the extremely scenic and amazing scenery.
W.I.P. npc questline convolutedness
