this is the first time i've played a fallout game. i haven't tried new vegas yet as of writing this review.
i tried out the game and got instantly hooked.
exploration in fallout 3 is fun, albeit a bit repetitive, and the sidequests cracked me up a lot. the writing shines most in the side content. from superhero larping to a reclusive vampire cult caught in conflict with a small town, the quests explore a variety of tones, themes, and ideas. that kept me excited with every new story i stumbled into.
another addition to the game is the gta-like radio, filled with over twenty 50s tracks. the songs grew on me, and without even noticing, i often found myself singing along while playing. having the radio on is also way better than the actual game soundtrack, which honestly sounds mediocre at best.
there were many instances where my game got softlocked due to random glitches that messed up the physics or broke progression, like being unable to access an important location without noclipping, the map turning blank, or an npc disappearing entirely. the console can help with problems like these by letting you noclip, spawn npcs in front of you, or teleport to specific locations.
i personally don't like the combat system. it's not quite like a regular fps and took me a while to get used to. for example, even if you shoot an npc in the head, they might barely take any damage. there were a lot of moments where i'd get stuck because my weapon couldn't deal any real damage, forcing me to either run away until the pip-boy let me fast travel or rely on powerful weapons i would’ve preferred to save for emergencies.
the pip-boy map can also be unreliable. destination markers for certain locations are often misplaced, and the level layouts are just confusing. for example, the map doesn't clearly show whether you need to go up or down, and floor layers tend to overlap.
the local map, too, shouldn't be trusted blindly. it often fails to show exactly where you need to go, and sometimes it gives no direction at all.
bugs and flaws aside, i still had a lot of fun. for its age, it holds up surprisingly well.
